Designed to help birders and banders identify, age, and sex all seventeen species of hummingbirds found in North America, this is the only identification guide devoted entirely to hummingbirds that includes up-close, easy-to-use illustrations. It also provides information on the eight species that have been reported but rarely seen in North America.
On first viewing hummingbirds are often a blur of fast-moving color. However, when they perch and hover they can be observed, and the size, shape, and color; the proportions of the body, bill, throat, and tail; the wing feather pattern; and the birds' behavior are crucial to accurate identification. The author's concise descriptions and illustrations pinpoint all these features in clear, jargon-free language. Anyone who loves hummingbirds will welcome the information he provides.

Review
"A valuable resource for anyone trying to keep tabs on visitors at a feeding station."--BirdWatching
"This guide is . . . filled with information, photos, and other illustrations. It should prove to be very handy, especially in locations where multiple hummingbird species are possible."--The Birder's Library
"Identifying hummingbirds can be tricky: Sometimes the little speedballs just look like blurs of color. But zoologist George West makes it easier with his new guide, which provides detailed references and illustrations for all 17 species of North American hummers--plus information on eight rarities."--Audubon
"In this beautiful book George West explains simply and clearly how to identify species, age, and sex of hummingbirds. He shares with us the knowledge and images garnered from years of studying, banding, photographing, and drawing these tiny, beautiful, and charismatic acrobats of the avian world."--Jean Palumbo, Northern Arizona UniversityAbout the Author

The photos are great, the explanations and ID differences are very clear, very good illustrations of adults and juveniles. Definitely would recommend this over Petersons Field Guide Hummingbird of North America. I have both and the Peterson guide was the standard, but George West book now becomes the new standard.

An Invaluable Guide to Identifying and Understanding North America's Hummingbirds By Julie C Hammonds Not every hummingbird you see is an adult male, easily identified thanks to a brilliantly colored gorget or crown. Depending on the time of year and the bird's sex and age, any number of North American hummingbirds are just plain green, or maybe green with white or a bit of another color. What are those? This invaluable illustrated guide can help you find out. The author, a zoologist with expertise in the physiology and ecology of birds, is a co-founder of the Hummingbird Monitoring Network. Along with his wife, he has banded more than 14,500 hummingbirds. For readers whose interest extends beyond identification of North America's 17 hummingbird species, the book captures information about hummingbird distribution, migration, courtship and nesting, nutrition and molt. It's written for scientists (including bird banders), but the language is accessible to any birder who wants to know more about these fascinating birds.

The Definitive Field Guide to Hummingbirds of North America By MrDrProfessor Finally, a comprehensive field guide covering all 17 species of hummingbirds found in north america. This book is styled in a way that I have been waiting for, for a good while. Not only is the guide illustrated with a large amount of detailed photographs illustrating males, females, and juveniles of the species, but is also illustrated with hand painted color plates that also help to illustrate plumage differences. This field guide far surpasses, in my opinion, Peterson's field guide to hummingbirds. If you are interested in hummingbirds and are interested in learning more about them and becoming better at identifying ones that you see, then this is the book you need to add to your collection.
