"Gaia Calls". compiles memoirs and descriptions of Wade Doak's life as a young man in the Solomon Islands living among the islanders, to years of dolphin research, diving adventures, and more. Wade's adventures begin with his wife, Jan, living with atoll dwellers and the shark callers of Laulasi in the Solomon Islands, move to his discovery that interspecies communication can exist with patience, focus, and respect for the natural world, then lead to his profound work with several species of wild dolphins. Wade Doak is one of the world’s leading marine explorers. In Gaia Calls he takes his readers on a unforgettable journey. From his first discovery of the sunken treasure of the Elingamite, to life as a young man in the Solomon Islands living among the islanders, to years of dolphin research, diving adventures, and his discovery of interspecies communication. With patience, focus, and respect he shares his knowledge and love for the natural world, and leads his readers to a deeper understanding of the interconnectedness of all life. A fascinating and engaging document of a life well lived. One of the world's leading marine explorers, Wade Doak takes us on a journey from his first discovery of the sunken treasure of the Elingamite to his very personal discovery of the oneness of the natural world and all life upon it. As a young man, living with atoll dwellers and the shark callers of Laulasi in the Solomon Islands, Wade and his wife, Jan, experience profound interspecies communication which leads them to their groundbreaking work with wild dolphins. At home, meetings with their Maori friends reinforce their understanding that there is a great deal to be learned from our indigenous neighbours who hold huge stores of knowledge, an invaluable asset to the Western world as our own way of life becomes more and more unsustainable. "This will change our views of the ocean and our human purpose." - Ric O'Barry, author of Behind the Dolphin Smile and star of The Cove, which won the 2010 Academy Award for Best Documentary. "This celebration of the interconnectedness of all life is a gift from the soul of a man at the apex of his life." - Hardy Jones, founder of BlueVoice.org, oceans activist, producer, and author of The Voice of the Dolphins. "This is a rare and intriguing record of exploring both the oceanic hemisphere of our globe and the right hemisphere of our own minds." - Lawrence Blair, writer/producer of the Ring of Fire book and TV series. Wade Doak, an internationally known marine biologist, dolphin researcher, and explorer, with his wife, Jan, have over one hundred years of underwater exploration between them. Their generation was the first to scuba dive and document the undersea world. Wade has written twenty books and has been involved with multiple TV films on fish, marine life, and South Seas exploration. He continues to explore the beauty of the New Zealand coastline where he has been diving and living for most of his life.

By Rosie Sheba Wade Doak and his work Gaia Calls encapsulates the incredible life he has had full of adventure, diving and truly observing this wonderful planet of ours in great detail. This work is empowering, and tells the tale of some incredible stories. His view point is remarkable in that it combines a glorious and enlightening mix of scientific evidence and esoteric experience. This work is brave and bold, in a society that is so judgemental and so easily discredits people if they are seen to be not "normal" or have experiences or evidence that does not fit within the usual scientific mould. Doak comes from an incredible background of science and nature photography, he was inducted into the SCUBA diver's hall of fame along with Jacques Cousteau. Doak should be regarded in the same circles as David Suzuki, as David Attenborough. He tells stories which combine so many perspectives, of animals, plants, people and culture. He truly engages with the planet, and this comes through clearly in this book. His tale is unique in the works I have read in that he also includes his family and his wife, Jan Doak, in his story, and speaks from the perspective of an intellectual human being, however not in a purely academic sense.Doak's summary of the book, introducing the concept of treating the earth as one large, living, breathing organism, one ecosystem, is profound, and expresses a concept that I believe is imperative for our survival as a species. Having recently read Jean Bolen's Urgent Message from Mother: Gather the Women and Save the World, I found Gaia Calls to be a brilliant continuation for me on the concept that our earth is struggling, and we as humans, have the power to change this. Books such as these give me hope that there will be a future where communication with nature, respect for our own species, and for our mother earth is a normal way of life. This is the call of Gaia, of Mother. Thank you, Wade Doak, for such a profound and heartening literary experience.
