If you read only one book about the brain, it should be this one. Dr. Czerner translates the discoveries of dozens of world-renowned authorities into a page-turning story about the mystery of consciousness and the awesome power of the human imagination. We imagine everything we know and feel - even the objects right in front of us. Neuroscience is warning us that the old adage, "seeing is believing," is dangerously misleading. We each see a world that is molded by our past experience, our prejudices and the stories told by those we trust and love. This book deals with what may be the most important topic of our time. Our future hinges on the world we imagine for ourselves. Brain researchers are exploring how each of us builds that world anew.

A Readable Update On The Relationship Between Brain and Mind By Mitzvah Fifteen years ago Dr, Czerner wrote “What Makes You Tick-The Brain In Plain English” to provide an easy to understand view of the many discoveries about the brain and mind that had occurred in the latter part of the twentieth century. Now he has followed up with “Brain Mind and Imagination” that describes the even more revolutionary conceptions about the workings of the brain and the emergence of consciousness that were developed in the beginning of the twenty-first century. Previous models that were based on analogy to computer and software or anatomical locations have given way to more holistic models that emphasize the unique role of the neocortex. There has been an expanded notion of perception that features the unique blending by each individual of sensory experience, emotional response and memory. The role of neuroplasticity and mirror neurons in connecting the functions of various areas of the brain is clearly explained. Dr. Czerner integrates more discoveries with an evolutionary based theory on the sudden emergence of language and culture in homo sapiens beginning about 70,000 years ago.In the latter part of the book Dr. Czerner compares the different stages of consciousness and gives a clear picture of how sensation differs from perception and how the latter provides a richer picture of experience and more options for adaptation. The author also ventures into the moral and legal arena in showing how a greater understanding of the part played by different areas of the brain can shed light on questions of unconscious vs conscious determinants of behavior, criminal responsibility, the nature of free will and mental illness. In a short, very readable, book Dr. Czerner has managed to provide an insightful overview of the recent radical change in thinking about the functions of the brain and their relationship to the nature of consciousness. I highly recommend “Brain Mind and Imagination” especially to those interested in this area but who might be turned off by a more technical presentation.

By Richard Shadoan As a psychiatrist who practiced more than 45 years, I have read many books about the mind starting with Freud, and more recently books about the brain. Dr. Thomas Czerner's book "Brain, Mind and Imagination" takes us the next step by focusing on imagination - how our brains have developed highly imaginative perceptions of the world through hearing, vision, taste and other modalities. This sets us apart from all other species starting over 200 million years ago. This book wonderfully traces and explains the history of how our brain developed and how it functions today. I strongly recommend reading it.

This is a phenomenal explanation of the results of studies of the brain since Dr. Czerner’s earlier book. The clarity of his writing allows a layman to appreciate how our brains react to stimulus. Judges and lawyers, and anyone else who depends upon formulation of memory should read this book to appreciate how neurons and synapses amass a narrative in the brain, creating a response to external stimulus. We believe we can listen carefully and focus our memory but there are multiple places in the brain that flood us with information and background allowing us to imagine our world. No wonder witnesses get flustered when other observations and even photos contradict them. This also explains why people with political ideologies and beliefs speak past each other. The brain hears more from itself than it does from others. The good news from Dr. Czerner is that we can understand and analyze and then make a choice, we are not bound by robotic neuronal processes. Hurray!
