In this unparalleled analysis, T.A. Wilson replaces idle speculation with data and interdisciplinary truths to reveal the hidden life of bigfoot, North America's indigenous hominin, by putting the species into evolutionary context. Drawing upon his field experience and databases that now contain thousands of sightings events, Wilson analyzes the data statistically to develop an anatomical profile of bigfoot. For the first time, hoaxing and myth can be separated from reality and all manner of questions can be reasonably answered, foremost among them being what exactly is bigfoot? How fast can it run? How strong is it? What is the mating structure of the species? How can a hominin so large be so defined by the smallest of anatomical details—the alignment of its great toe? What is its cranial capacity? What are the implications of its hand anatomy? Could it be capable of proto-gestures, even protolanguage? What are Pacific Coast population estimates? How could it escape scientific recognition? Now bigfoot is a mystery no more...or at least not quite the seemingly unsolvable mystery that it was.

By Gene Baade This reviewer is only 115pp into this book, but feels compelled to write a preliminary, if obviously incomplete, review. Every few years a volume on the subject is researched, written, and published which deserves close attention. This is one of those books. The author has analyzed the extensive database of Bigfoot/Sasquatch reports compiled over several decades, starting in about 1957, by British Columbia's John Green and has subjected Green's database to considerable statistical analysis. The results, however tentative and reserved in some cases, are carefully and conservatively drawn and highly noteworthy. A chapter near the front of the book sets the stage for the usefulness and general reliabilityof Green's database with a carefully written reconsideration of the argument presented by many who almost dogmatically claim that eyewitness reports are unreliable. For that chapter alone Wilson's book is valuable. This reviewer has been reading and considering non-fiction books on the subject of Bigfoot/Sasquatch for over 45 years. This belongs on the top shelf of books that seriously study recorded Bigfoot/Sasquatch reports. By its very nature this book is (thankfully) not a "fast read". Instead, it rewards its deliberate readers with abundant fuel for thought. Wilson’s writing style, in spite of the complex material, is easily followed. In contrast to many self-published books, his text is remarkably free (to this point) of troublesome grammar, spelling errors, and typos. For those who enjoy "show and tell" reports (Bigfoot sighting accounts), Wilson very judiciously uses a variety of accounts to verbally illustrate his analysis.

Reigning Hide and Seek Champion By Aislynn ***This book was reviewed for the San Francisco Book Review***Wilson’s Bigfoot in Evolutionary Perspective is an in-depth look at the available information regarding this unique cryptid. The author takes an anthropologist’s approach, studying many different aspects of the creature known as ‘bigfoot’.Making use of John Green’s database of reported sightings, Wilson presents us with a plethora of statistical evidence. There are chapters devoted to anatomical analysis, from height to a propensity for night reflecting eyes, and to abilities and sensory perceptions. Other chapters compare and contrast known sasquatch information to another hominid- Gigantopithecus, and to our nearest relatives among geni Homo and Australopithecus. Chapters on anatomy include specific discussions of hands, feet, and cranial capacity. Wilson also covers the Very Important Topic of hoaxers, which is necessary to address when writing about any cryptid. He also covers another Very Important Topic, that of eyewitness fallibility, something else important to acknowledge.Fun stuff: it was very neat to see such a nice, organised analysis of this elusive cryptid. Wilson clearly supports the pro side, but he's good at playing the Devil’s Advocate and arguing both sides. I like how the material was presented. This book is intellectual rather than sensational. Not so fun stuff: there’s a scattering of grammar errors. It could use another proofing session. There aren't too many though. I did find the language at times very convoluted and difficult to parse, though I read a great deal of scholarly material (anthropology, psychology, arachaeology, philosophy). I think it could be tidied up a bit, while still keeping the scholarly bent. I do disagree somewhat with the section on eyewitness reliability. Having carried out many mock ‘crime’ or ‘surprise’ scenarios for teaching/learning purposes, I have to say eyewitness recall is quite unreliable. Our brains are very good at filling memory gaps with what we *expect* and sometimes what we *desperately desire*. A person who has an unexplainable encounter who believes in cryptids is more likely to fill gaps with that, than is the person who is a skeptic. All that being said, I do believe the preponderance of similar accounts points to encounters with *something* out of the ordinary. If you are a cryptid hunter or a bigfoot enthusiast, be sure to check out Wilson’s Bigfoot in Evolutionary Perspective!

Excellent treatise of information and observations of this elusive species By H.M. 2005 This is the second book written by this author, a follow-up to his 2005 book In Pursuit of A Legend: 72 Days in Bigfoot Country, and it is an excellent one. Whereas the first book delved into a journey of the Sierra Nevadas searching for evidence (and possibly an encounter) with a hairy hominid, this one takes a more analytical approach into observed behaviors, patterns and reports, mostly from John Green's database. Wilson looks into each report in general terms, and gleans information from each report which seems to correlate with a more humanlike entity than a large upright ape. He examines the various aspects that have been observed, such as footprint finds, descriptions of these entities, different colors of hair, observations of behaviors, correlations of times of year of reports and other aspects of the mystery. Wilson uses anthropological iobservations of other hominids to correlate to his speculations of Sasquatches as well. It all makes for a very interesting and eye-opening tome, one which is worth picking up and placing on one's cryptozoological bookshelf.
