Beautiful pictures and accurate/scientific explanations about how this wonder is the possible in such a short time. The writer is passionate and you can feel through the multiple explanations he gives that this is a life passion he puts into words. Magnificent !

The botanically naive like me gets an informative introduction to evolution at work. Forget about Darwin's finches in Galapagos Islands, this is the real thing in a real place we can observe it. The interaction between soil, climate, weather, browsers and people, and what this means for long range conservation is fascinating. The sum is truly greater than the parts. This should enthrall you no matter how you think it comes about. The book needs be on the reading list of anyone intending to visit Namaqualand to see the flowers, because there is so more to it than the monospecies fields of daisies growing on degraded lands. So sad that to many short change themselves by only looking at that aspect.But the wealth of detail does tend to overwhelm. They could have provided an overview (in a picture perhaps) to guide the tourist about how to think about what they see and how the parts interact. Thinking at a deeper level enhances the understanding and thus enjoyment of the experience. I think the book could have done more to help us here.
