Brief Candle in the Dark: My Life in Science by Richard Dawkins is an autobiographical depiction of his experiences as a world-renowned scientist and atheist. Dawkins has experienced an endless amount of notable events in his life, many of which were very public, such as debate, conference, and television appearances. In this second volume of his memoirs, these life experiences have inspired memories of other events, background stories of people he knew, and scientific analysis of Dawkins' theories of evolution, natural selection, biology, and religion, particularly atheism versus creationism.
From 1970 to 1990, Dawkins served as a university lecturer in animal behavior in the zoology department at Oxford University, and from 1990 to 1995 he was promoted to reader. He also gave tutorials at New College, where he was made a fellow in 1970. He served on a number of committees, including a committee that discussed candidates to invite to attend the school....

Ray Those with strong religious beliefs will probably not like reading anything renowned scientist and atheist Richard Dawkins writes. But, the second offering of his memoirs, Brief Candle in the Dark: My Life in Science, is worth reading regardless of your religion. Dawkins goes into some detail in this book about his scientific and religious beliefs (or disbeliefs), but the key thing is his take on those who have in some way influenced him through the years. If there is a weakness in the theories Dawkins espouses, it’s that if evolution is as determinative as he believes, how can there still be so many people who refuse to believe in it. I say that tongue in cheek, because there have always been, and will always be, people who cannot accept any fact that contradicts cherished beliefs.Brief Candle in the Dark is a book about science written for laymen; it uses a thematic/literary style in order to maintain interest, rather than a straight chronological style, and esoteric/complicated scientific terms are used sparingly.I got the audiobook version of Instaread’s Brief Candle in the Dark: My Life in Science by Richard Dawkins/Summary & Review, and was as usual impressed. Being able to get an in depth summary of a book in a mere 15 minutes is a treat for those of us with busy schedules. It enables one to get a good idea of a book without having to read the whole book—or pay for it—and then one is able to make a more rational and informed decision on which books to buy.

A nine page overview highlights his career, achievements, people met, places traveled etc. There are just three main characters: Richard, Lalla (current wife) and Alan Grafen, a former student. Richard is very confident in his beliefs and thinks they should be obvious to others. Naturally this book, even through reading this Instaread summary (think DETAILED review), comes across as very one-sided.What are the themes discussed in this summary?>>Support from Lalla>>Economics of Natural Selection>>Evolution>>Creationists>>Atheism>>Public Understanding and Appreciation of ScienceThis quick read is suitable for a variety of readers. Have you already read the original and just need a refresher? Don't have time to read the original but need to know what this book is about? Thinking about purchasing the original but want to read a good summary first to see if it is on a subject you would like to read more about? Important to note that my review is based on the quality of this Instaread review and NOT the content of the original book. Book provided in exchange for an honest review. Thanks, Liz

Best place to start learning about Dawkins and his work By Ivy Reisner Brief Candle in the Dark is not an easy book to distill down to a brief synopsis, but this does an excellent job of it. There is the overview of Dawkins' life and work, done in overview for the most and coming in for details just enough, such as in the story of his trip to the Galapagos islands, to give a good sense of the original. It then breaks out into analysis of Dawkins' contributions to science, his beliefs as well as how they have been received and the profound impact he has had in promoting and explaining both evolution and atheism, his public appearances, and the relationships he's had with the most important people in his life, his wife most especially. This is not a substitute for the original, but it is an excellent starting place if you want to learn more about Dawkins and his work. It touches on some of his other books as well, such as The Selfish Gene, so you can use it to choose where to begin. I was given a copy for review, having read very little of Dawkins earlier works, and this has definitely kindled my interest in reading further.
