I was his lucky Penny. He was my light in the dark, hope in despair. Our bond was one of survival, friendship... first love. But then we were ripped apart and Blake Weston became the memory I turned to when everything else in my life fell apart. Seven years later, a summer working at Camp Chance is supposed to be my fresh start. Beautiful scenery and the chance to better the lives of foster children - kids like me. But when my eyes land on him across the fire, time stands still and feelings come rushing back to the surface. I thought I'd moved on, tucked him away in my heart. One look into his soulful blue eyes and I know I'm wrong. Blake Weston can heal the broken parts of me. Restore my hope. Love me. It's our second chance. A sign we are supposed to be together. Isn't it? I was twelve when I survived the accident that killed my parents. Fourteen when I survived the devil. And sixteen, when I survived a heartbreak of the worst kind. But in my twenty-three years, Blake Weston might just be the first thing I won't survive. WARNING: This book contains references to abuse that some readers may find distressing.

I didn't like the way the issues were resolved. I felt like it was all way too easy, and I didn't get nearly enough closure. I also felt like we were just skimming the surface of the characters, but never got really that deep in knowing who they were supposed to be. It had some major potential, but unfortunately I feel like it didn't get there.**See goodreads.com/NMmomof4 for my full review with spoilers**Brief Summary of the Storyline: This is Penny and Blake's story. They meet when Penny arrives as the new kid at a foster group home. The foster parents that run the home are not good people, so they form a bond instantly to help each other through it. As they grow, so does their relationship. They get separated, and are reunited 7 years later at a camp for foster kids. They soon find that their connection is still there -- but of course it can't be that easy. They have some major obstacles, but eventually get their HFN ending.POV: This alternated between Penny and Blake's POV (with Blake's being primarily flashback scenes).Overall Pace of Story: Ok. I have a big issue with the abrupt ending. I felt like I was teary in the middle of drama, and then all of a sudden it was over and all wrapped up and tied with a bow. I didn't, however, skim at any time in the book.Instalove: No. They have known each other since they were 12, so it was a long term development.H rating: 3 stars. Blake. I felt like he was inconsiderate of Penny's feelings a few times, and i wanted him to just communicate better!h rating: 3 stars. Penny. She was damaged from her time in the foster group home, but I wanted her to stand up for herself more with the H when it seemed like he was jerking her around.Sadness level: Low/moderate. I did tear up a few times, but not so much I needed tissues.Heat level: Low. The scenes are more about furthering the emotional connection between the h and H, and not there to be hot IMO.Descriptive sex: Yes, but not in major detail (almost to the point of being fade-to-black but not quite).Safe sex: I don't recall any mention of condoms, birth control, or std status.OW/OM drama: Yes.Closure: I felt like it had an abrupt ending with not enough closure. I would call it a HFN ending for the couple. How I got it: It was part of my kindle unlimited subscription.

By Confessions of a Serial Reader When I first started reading this book, I felt like it had a lot of potential. The level of emotion right out of the gate really felt like it could carry through the entire plot. I was disappointed when that current grew weaker the more you read.Penny and Blake were foster siblings from the ages of 12-17, when Blake disappeared from Penny's life without a trace. They had a very strong bond and a young love that you would hope would last forever, Of course, circumstances beyond both of their control tore that bond and love apart, leaving Penny an emotional mess. This sets the tone for the book as a whole.Through a stroke of chance Penny and Blake are reunited as counselors at a camp for foster kids. Being back around each other brings up the emotions, questions and heartache of the past. When Penny finally feels the walls coming back down around her heart in regards to Blake, he crushes her once again. Disappearing with out a goodbye.Life after camp is where I became disappointed. Blake has a life that he didn't divulge to Penny. She had to find out about his 'complications' with out any warning. Penny as a character is very weak, in just about every way. IMO the way that Blake treats their 'relationship' while he works out his 'complications' just adds to it. Although his intentions toward Penny are good, he still makes her look like 'the other woman'.This is my confession: While I am happy with the HEA, I just wish there was more full-circle closure and less of Penny just accepting everything. It just felt very abrupt at the end. Your left with a very 'that's it?' feeling.

Wonderful story of love and friendship By Mollien Osterman Alpha Book Club Review5 Pennies Yes, you will need some tissues for this story, maybe not the full box, but enough. Lucky Penny is a story of two people that form a bond while they are in a foster home. It started after the accident that claimed the lives of both of Penny’s parents. Alone with no family to claim her, the traumatized 12 year old begins her life in foster care. Blake who is also lived at the foster home quickly took Penny under his wing. They became best friends and as they grew up their friendship became love. Before their 17th birthday, Blake’s rich Uncle locates him and takes him home with him. Blake never got a chance to say goodbye to his Lucky Penny. Seven years later they are reunited at a camp where they are working as counselors to teenagers in foster care. So much time has past. Neither one of them is the same, but the feelings that they once had are still there. This is a wonderful story of love, friendship and overcoming the past. You will not be able to put this book down until you find out if Penny and Blake can overcome the obstacles that life has thrown in their way.ARC provided by the author via Give Me Books in exchange for an honest review.
