About the Author Garrett P. Servis was an astronomer and one of the most respected scientists and science fiction authors of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He was the author of Astronomy with an Opera Glass and The Second Deluge. Robert Godwin is the space curator at the Canadian Air and Space Museum and an advocate of the Space Frontier Foundation. He works closely with the Mars Society, the National Space Society, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, and the X-Prize Foundation. He is the author of Apollo 11, The Illustrated Collector’s Guide to Led Zeppelin, and The Lunar Exploration Scrapbook and the coauthor of Saturn, which won the Sir Arthur Clarke Award for Best Presentation Written. He lives in Burlington, Ontario.

Clapham A sequel to a plagiarized version of War of the Worlds, Edison's Conquest of Mars is one of the most ridiculously entertaining books I've read in some time. While the writing nor subject matter of the book is hardly revolutionary, it does contain many innovations for the genre of science fiction. Serviss's novel contains the first depiction of a space suit, rayguns, and dogfights within the vacuum of space. During the creation of the story Edison collaborated with, and even lambasted the author. At the end of the book there is a section reproducing these letters written between Edison and Serviss.If you are a fan of steampunk, or early science fiction, I am sure you will love this novel.

I appreciated the opportunity to purchase this nicely-done paperback edition, and especially liked the foreward and afterword that put it into historical context. The novel itself is indeed quaint and frankly a bit boring in places, but it's a unique piece of sci-fi history that has been somewhat inaccessible. So if you're into stories of Martian invaders, or H.G. Wells, or vintage sci-fi, or sci-fi history -- check it out.
2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Ahead of its Time - Recommended By C. Hill "Edison's Conquest of Mars" is an interesting and fairly enjoyable psycho-sequel to the H.G. Wells classic The War of the Worlds and, more accurately, a direct sequel to "Fighters from Mars", which was a blatant rewrite of "War of the Worlds". This 1898 book was mentioned on a satirical site I like as introducing many Sci-Fi first, including alien abductions, spacesuits, and a host of other themes that were ahead of its time (confirmed by checking a popular "Wiki" site, for all that's worth).No plot spoilers from me: The story is told from the perspective of an unnamed associate of Thomas Edison and takes place immediately following a devastating attack on Earth from the Martians. While not overly action packed and having some obviously faulty science (in retrospect), it is amazing to me how much the author got right. It also, as is evident in the title, venerates Thomas Edison (who was very much alive when the book was published) as the main hero of the story.It does suffer from the attitudes of the time regarding race and nationalism that might not sit right with all readers, but taken at face value it is quite an imaginative and entertain tale. It should be reiterated that this is not a true sequel to "War of the Worlds", so the Martians are notably different than those Wells portrayed.This is a worthy read for the many firsts and the story actually stands on its own, without having to read "Fighters from Mars" first.Recommended!CFH
