Adventures of a Star Warrior review By Craig Buffinton Adventures of a Star Warrior tells the tale of Bob Huffman’s career as a rocket scientist / star warrior. The transition from research scientist to applied scientist preparing a cold war era defense, starts with a project to study ultraviolet emissions from ICBM exhaust plumes. Bob’s teams were comprised of some of America’s best and brightest working to prepare for a war in space. It is surprising to learn how much the effort is not strictly science and defense. An entrepreneurial approach, competitiveness and salesmanship is also required to put experiments in flight. Another surprise was the degree of uncertainty and risk involved in what I expected would be relatively predictable, mundane rocket launches. Bob gives an insider’s view of the Strategic Defense Initiative. Top SDI management focused on near term launches of prototypes while undercutting the prerequisite research needed to understand tracking and destroying ICBMs.I liked the book. I enjoyed learning about the lives of those involved in cold war defense. The book includes wry humor, personal anecdotes and a depiction of the day to day life, struggles and characters of the star warriors. I met Bob briefly and long ago on a social occasion. At the time I had no real knowledge of his participation in missile defense.

By Optohawk As a university professor, I especially enjoyed this book for the insight it gives on the culture of funded scientific studies. The focus is not on the science itself, but rather on the bureaucratic and political intrigues that are part and parcel of getting large scientific projects to succeed. In this book, young scientists can learn a lot about the process of science -- how scientific work in a large project actually gets done, which is something not taught in college courses. And the book is a true pleasure to read, witty at times, and always engaging, as we follow Dr. Huffman's adventures in planning, overseeing, and dealing with the spectacular successes and failures of the various rocket experiments. At one level this is a very well-written personal account of one scientist's professional adventures. But its true value goes beyond the personal, and speaks to the culture of scientific programs. Cowan "Adventures of a Star Warrior: Cold War Rocket Science on the Space Frontier" is a well written account of the era of rocket science and the development of measuring devices to quantify the footprint of rockets launched into space.The book is written in the first person and recounts the personal story of Dr.Huffman's decision to leave the world of theoretical physics and enter the world of applied science where he developed methods and spectroscopic sensors to detect a rocket's ultraviolet footprint. The book recounts the successes and failures of rocket launches, and the politics of being a scientist during the cold war era. It tells a story of perseverance and the challenges of what it takes to succeed as a research scientist in the political landscape on the national level.
