About the Author Daniel James Myers, Jr., graduated from the United States Military Academy, West Point,* New York, with a bachelor of science degree in Engineering and from Tulane University, New Orleans, Louisiana, with a master of science degree in Nuclear Physics. After graduation, he was stationed in New Mexico for five years with the Defense Atomic Support Agency where he did research, development, and testing of nuclear warheads during the 1960s. He was a decorated combat infantryman who fought in both the Korean War and Vietnam Wars. He served in paratrooper units in Japan and the United States. He was a graduate of the United States Army Command and General Staff College, Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. Retiring after twenty years in the Army as a lieutenant colonel, Mr. Myers opened “Dan Myers Real Estate” in Knoxville, Tennessee. It was a very successful operation until interest rates rose into the high teens during the late 1970s. He sold the company and moved to Hawaii in 1978. In Honolulu, Myers went to work for Merrill Lynch as a financial consultant. The 1980s, the Reagan years, ushered in a period of low taxes, economic growth, and expansion. It was an exciting and profitable time to be invested in stocks as the market moved to all-time highs. He retired from Merrill Lynch in 1991 as vice president. Daniel lived with his wife, Beth, in Hawaii until his death in 2011. They have five children and nine grandchildren. Daniel has a daughter, son and an adopted son from his first marriage and inherited a daughter and son by his second marriage to Beth. West Point classmate, Jack Craigie, stated: “Dan was more than a hero in 1951. He was a workhorse. Code*Breakers was a good movie, but it left out Dan’s pivotal role. For almost four months Danny was a leading investigator of a large cheating enterprise. In his role on the Honors Committee, Dan did a job that has never before existed with perseverance, judgment, and maturity beyond his years. He did so under the most stressful and bewildering circumstances. Indeed, to say Danny and West Point were covering new territory would be an understatement of epic proportions.” *The cheating scandal resulted in the expulsion of 83 cadets from the academy by President Truman.
