The Gravity of the Situation By video meliora proboque What most recommends this volume to the casual reader with an interest in physics is the fact that the author is *not* a professional physicist, but instead a brilliant autodidact who just happens incidentally also to have designed the very renowned grand organ at the Sydney Opera House. So he certainly does understand acoustic (and other) wave forms, as well as all the ordinary rudiments of classical physics.The book is the product of literally 74 years of independent cogitations (the author is now 86, and became deeply intrigued with the problem of gravity and its relation to time at the age of twelve). For those who don't read (or want to read) equations in tensor calculus, but might still want to follow the approach to solving a profound mystery of someone with a relentlessly logical mind not influenced by prevailing theoretical paradigms, this is an enjoyable read.The fascination lies not so much in his conclusions (though recent work on superfluidity* would seem potentially to subsume and validate Cahill's work on inhomogeneous quantum foam inflow, which in turn resembles Sharp's ideas in many respects)... but in the Holmesian pursuit of a solution from first principles. In other words, read the book to enjoy Sharp's reasoning and not to pursue a Ph.D. in physics. Professional string theorists may not have much interest in the ideas of an amateur, but as Smolin remarks, string theory (the prevailing "gold standard") has 10^500 different versions and is utterly unfalsifiable... so you might find it more fun just to play along with the accessible Gedankenexperiments of a tinkerer in gravity and time. Sharp may or may not be correct in his conjectures, but they're certainly interesting, and as I've mentioned, they do seem to converge on something akin to Reginald Cahill's published and peer-reviewed work on gravity quantum foam inflow (2003), and his (Sharp's) analogy invoking the wave inertial-resistance of a "banana pudding" quantum foam is metaphorically creative.In any case, Sharp is indisputably right about at least one thing, which is that mathematical models are only symbolic constructs predictively isomorphic to observed reality, and are *not* equivalent to the reality, itself. His book is in English, and it's a quick read (in reality!).(In the interests of full disclosure, I should mention that I am not a physicist, either, but was given a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.)*There's actually an interesting article about this in the June, 2014 issue of Scientific American. Though perhaps unlikely to be embraced very quickly, a "superfluid" model of reality would actually reconcile quantum mechanics and relativity

By Wups At 41 pages, this is a slim volume, evidently the basis of a more ambitious work still in progress, but I was NOT disappointed and, at its modest price, I felt I got my money's worth. Though it can be read in one sitting and is carefully explained, some passages have to be taken more slowly. So it is not bedtime reading and prospective readers will need some basic knowledge and interest in science. Nevertheless, I found it engaging. Some of the 'what if?' scenarios may raise an eyebrow at first, but do persist, as they are there for a purpose and lead to most surprising and satisfying revelations. Many current and firmly held scientific theories about the nature of the Universe, come under 'Sharp' scrutiny. I would dearly like to hear what Stephen Hawking makes of it. Who would have thought that Newton's Apple now has a rival in Banana Custard?

From the Author What is The Joshua James Project?Simply put, I'm offering up nearly ninety percent of my short plays and most of my full length plays (such as this one) to the public free of royalty for theatrical performances, under certain conditions. It's true; you can produce this work, FOR FREE, under the right circumstances. You don't have to pay a royalty or even write to ask my permission, you can simply just produce the play, as long the production meets the following conditions:   1)    It's a student or college production of less than 30 performances. 2)    It's an independent showcase where no one else gets paid and a run of less than 30 performances. 3)    Bottom line, if it's a short run and no one else gets paid, I don't need to get paid. If it's a longer run at a professional theatre and the actors, stage managers and stagehands are getting paid, then I expect to get paid, too.  There are requirements, which are as follows: 1)    Any program or publicity that features the title of the produced play must also feature my name as the author. More on that later.  2)    Don't rewrite it or change the text. You want to improvise, join an improv group. About the Author JOSHUA JAMES is a screenwriter, novelist and playwright based in New York City. His film credits include POUND OF FLESH, starring Jean-Claude Van Damme. As a playwright, Joshua made his London debut when The Men's Room was produced at the Croydon Warehouse Theatre. He made his Off-Broadway debut in The Fear Project at The Barrow Group with his piece Extreme Eugene. His plays have been produced throughout New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago, all across the United States and various other parts of the world. Neal (gneal.stu@providence.mb.ca) Contrary to popular opinion the novel Le Notre Dame de Paris by Victor Hugo is not primarily about the deformed bell-ringer Quasimodo. Quasimodo's role is actually surprisingly small in the story, which makes you wonder why the English translater's chose "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" as the translation for the title. Actually, as the original French title would indicate, it is the cathedral itself that is the focus of the book. This is why in the unabridged editions of this book you will find numerous chapters that seemingly have nothing to do with the plot of the story. This is the books weakest point, and it may turn many people away from the book. Once you get into the plot, however, it is iimpossible to put the book down. The characters are intriguing: composer Pierre Gringoire, archdeacon Dom Claude Frollo, once a paragon of virtue now tormented by his corrupt love for a gipsy girl, L'Esmerelda, the naive gipsy dancer, Phoebus, the selfish, egotistical captain of the guards, and of course Qausimodo, a deaf, deformed bellringer. The relationships between these characters are complex and dark but they make an unforgettable story. The story is never, from front to back, a happy one, so if you are looking for a book that makes you "feel good" this is not the one for you. If, on the other hand, you are looking for a good book to read, that is unafraid to deal with the darker side of reality, I highly recommend "The Hunchback of Notre Dame."

97 of 107 people found the following review helpful. When A Public Hanging Was Entertainment For The Masses By Loren D. Morrison Victor Hugo never wrote a book titled THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME. Some early translator gave it that name. What Hugo wrote was a book called NOTRE DAME OF PARIS (in French: NOTRE DAME de PARIS). This is not a book that is primarily about a hunchback named Quasimodo or a beautiful Gypsy girl named Esmerelda. It is a book narrowly focused on the Cathedral of Notre Dame situated on the Ile de la Cite in the center of Paris and, more broadly, on the 15th century city of Paris. This was a Paris where public executions or any form of punishment involving public humiliation were the highest forms of entertainment and drew the kinds of crowds that we would see at a major sports event today. If this book is not read with this in mind, the reader might well be disappointed because he came to it with a different sort of book in mind. I would like to congratulate the one previous reviewer who reviewed the book on the basis of its actual scope and intent.Now to the human aspects of the novel, the plot so to speak: There are no perfect angels in this book. After all, Esmerelda was a part of a band of thieves who came to public gatherings for the express purpose of seeing what they could "gather" for themselves. Quasimodo was not a misshapen humanitarian. He had been known to carry out a dirty deed or two himself. As for the rest of the characters, there's not a role model in the bunch. To Hugo's credit, we really care about Quasimodo and Esmerelda, "warts and all." This is one indication of good writing.The basic plot, devoid of any embellishments, is rather simple. Esmerelda, out of humanitarian instincts, comes to Quasimodo's aid in a small but meaningful way when he really needs a friend. Quasimodo, as best as he is able, falls in love with Esmerelda. When the arch villain, Archdeacon Dom Frollo, who is also in love with Esmerelda but has been rejected by her, tries to have her hanged, Quasimodo saves her, but only for a while. Eventually she is executed under circumstances where Quasimodo can't came to her rescue. Quasimodo throws our villain, Dom Frollo, to his death from the heights of the cathedral.In a way, its a shame that when an author creates a memorable character, or an opera composer writes an unforgettable aria, these creations take on such lives of their own that they overshadow the novel or opera from which they come. That has certainly been one of the fates of this book. Too many readers have come to it searching for the cute little Disney Quasimodo, or even Charles Laughton's unforgettable Quasimodo from the 1939 movie. When it turned out that the scope of this book was so much more comprehensive, they were disappointed for all the wrong reasons.A note about reading Hugo, or any other author worth reading. One should read for enjoyment, and, where it is available, for information that will increase one's understanding of this world. I have noticed that several reviewers, some of whom didn't like this book, talked of its length, or of Hugo's use of "similes and metaphors." Anyone who is busy trying to analyze a book for styles or techniques doesn't have the right inclination to enjoy the book, to enjoy the atmospheres the author has created, or to get the emotional impact that was the author's intent.I would recommend THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME as a book that is well worth reading if read for the right reasons. Don't read it, or any book, looking for "techniques" or for "neo-modernism," or "anything-else-isms." I guarantee you that's not what the author had in mind when he wrote his novel. He meant it to be read, not analyzed.

Cobb's complete and unabridged edition of Victor Hugo's classic, the "Hunchback of Notre-Dame," is without a doubt the best to be found. His translation retains the original romanticism and tragedy so characteristic of the great novelist's works. One would search in vain to find a better edition than Cobb's full-throated rendition of this great masterpiece of French Literature.

By Lorenzo Il libro non mi è piaciuto, per diversi motivi.Innanzitutto, l’intento dichiarato del libro è di per sé problematico, ed è quello di rivolgersi a chi “la scienza moderna non la conosce", e presentare argomenti molto avanzati. Fin qui siamo in un terreno comune a tanta divulgazione. Se aggiungiamo la scelta di condensare il tutto nel formato “breve” questo comporta spesso l’uso di semplificazioni che banalizzano fino a corrompere i contenuti. Si può fare diversamente? Secondo me sì. A chi di fisica non sa nulla (ammettendo che esista una tale audience che compra il libro di Rovelli) si farebbe un servizio migliore raccontando i successi di Newton e Galileo, che sono molto più facili da capire ma contengono tutta la grandezza della spiegazione fisica dei fenomeni naturali, sono a tutti gli effetti "scienza moderna”.Ammettendo di voler spiegare la fisica del XX secolo, il formato “breve” è inadeguato, ma comunque si potrebbero organizzare gli argomenti molto meglio di come fa Rovelli. In questo libro si parte dalla Relatività Generale senza spiegare la Speciale. Il capitolo successivo spiega la Meccanica Quantistica in nove pagine, e un bel po’ dello spazio viene usato per comunicare all’inesperto lettore che in fondo la Meccanica Quantistica non è compresa completamente, le equazioni “restano misteriose”. Il capitolo sul cosmo contiene disegni carini, e perfino qualche numero (l’età dell’Universo) ed è forse il migliore, anche se non è chiaro a cosa alluda il disegno “ondulato”.Il capitolo sulle particelle mostra di nuovo un certo disagio nei confronti della Meccanica Quantistica. Tra le poche informazioni che sopravvivono alla cesoia della “brevità” troviamo che il Modello Standard “ha l’aria rappezzata e raccogliticcia” e dà previsioni in modo “assurdamente involuto”. L'autore sarebbe stato molto più efficace nel comunicare i metodi e i successi della scienza moderna se avesse posto l’accento sulla semplicità concettuale, e sul senso di inevitabilità, piuttosto che sui dettagli. Qui — come nel caso della Meccanica Quantistica — stupisce che trovino spazio questi aspetti tecnici ritenuti poco soddisfacenti, vista l’audience a cui ci si rivolge. Anche la materia oscura viene presentata come un “difetto” del Modello Standard. Quando finalmente viene nominato qualche scienziato in relazione al Modello Standard, non si tratta di nessuno dei teorici responsabili (Glashow, Weinberg & Salam, e Gross, Politzer & Wilczek) ma viene citato solo il “nostro senatore Carlo Rubbia”.Nella lezione successiva scopriamo che, secondo l'autore, nel “theoretical minimum” di un novello amatore c’è la gravità quantistica, e in particolare la “gravità quantistica a loop”. Poco importa che questa teoria sia altamente speculativa, che venga studiata solo da una minoranza della comunità, e che sia ritenuta un approccio molto poco convincente dalla maggioranza degli esperti in materia. Rovelli porta l’esempio dello studente che la mattina va a lezione di Relatività Generale e il pomeriggio a quella di Meccanica Quantistica, e conclude che i professori “sono citrulli” perché la mattina c’è “uno spazio curvo dove tutto è continuo” e il pomeriggio “uno spazio piatto dove saltano quanti di energia”. Ma il citrullo qui sarebbe lo studente, perché non si sarebbe accorto che lo spazio in cui si muovono le sue particelle nel corso di Meccanica Quantistica è anch’esso perfettamente continuo, e non c’è nessun problema a considerarlo curvo invece che piatto. La difficoltà nel matrimonio tra le due teorie emerge solo in condizioni estreme, è molto più sottile da spiegare — anche se non impossibile— , e qui il "guru della gravità quantistica” toppa grossolanamente.Il capitolo sul calore si distingue per una spiegazione particolarmente involuta delle basi statistiche della termodinamica, che si fatica a seguire. Spiccano domande mal poste che l'autore immagina il lettore si stia ponendo (“Cosa c’entra quello che sappiamo o non sappiamo con le leggi che governano il mondo?”) e una discussione sulla freccia del tempo che non fa nessun riferimento alla cosmologia, ma invece preferisce mescolare fisica e filosofia, citando Heidegger. Vi stupite perché pensavate che il libro fosse sulla scienza moderna? Allora preparatevi per l’ultima lezione. Rovelli infatti, nell’economia del suo breve trattato, per l’ultimo capitolo seleziona “Noi”. Si tratta in parte di un discorso sulla coscienza. Quello della coscienza è sicuramente un problema affascinante, ma ancora troppo difficile per essere formulato e affrontato con i metodi della scienza, ed è un ambito molto lontano dall’expertise di un fisico teorico qual è l’autore, che però non si tira indietro e ci dice la sua. Io in questa miscela di filosofia e scienza non ho capito molto. Mi pare però che emerga una visione “umanistica”, lontana dalla moderna concezione impersonale dell’impresa scientifica. Ancora una volta, in questo capitolo viene tradito l’intento di spiegare argomenti della scienza in modo semplice, e viene invece offerto un flusso di idee, collegamenti e suggestioni che al massimo può emozionare piuttosto che informare.La ricerca del brivido non è esclusiva di questo capitolo. In generale lo stile del libro è l’opposto di un’asciutta prosa scientifica, spesso l’autore sceglie espressioni immaginifiche che sono più vicine alla poesia che alla descrizione scientifica della Natura. Un estratto su tutti: “Una manciata di tipi di particelle elementari, che fluttuano in continuazione fra l’esistere e il non esistere, pullulano nello spazio anche quando sembra non ci sia nulla, si combinano assieme all’infinito come le venti lettere di un alfabeto cosmico per raccontare l’immensa storia delle galassie, delle stelle innumerevoli, dei raggi cosmici, della luce del sole, delle montagne, dei boschi, dei campi di grano, dei sorrisi dei ragazzi alle feste, e del cielo nero e stellato della notte.”Finora vi ho detto perché il libro non mi è piaciuto. Vorrei ora spiegare perché il libro mi ha fatto incazzare. Rovelli consapevolmente e ripetutamente si rivolge al suo lettore, che di fisica moderna non sa nulla, e gli espone dei punti di vista personali, delle teorie o interpretazioni di cui lui stesso è autore e che sono tutt’altro che conoscenza condivisa e accettata della fisica moderna. Ne sono esempio il capitolo sulla gravità quantistica a loop, e l’interpretazione “relazionale” della Meccanica Quantistica e Statistica. Tutti coloro che hanno a cuore la soluzione dei misteri irrisolti della Natura, sarebbero molto felici se un giorno la “gravità quantistica a loop” ci offrisse un progresso concreto sul problema della gravità quantistica. Quel giorno però non è ancora arrivato, e affermare che “la principale direzione di ricerca centrata sul tentativo di risolvere il problema è la gravita quantistica a loop” è semplicemente fuorviante e disonesto.Per concludere, leggere questo libro è nella migliore delle ipotesi una perdita di tempo. A chi interessa sapere qualcosa sulla fisica moderna, consiglio piuttosto gli eccellenti libri divulgativi di Weinberg, uno scienziato che ha avuto il dono di scoprire davvero qualcosa sulla Natura, e che è anche un bravissimo scrittore.

Wonderful read: By Dr. Jan Basic concepts of current physics are described in a manner that is clear and evocative, with very lucid and straightforward prose. Reminds one of Richard Feynman's clarity. This book is a must read for any person who is the least curious about the nature of the physical universe we inhabit. The fact that he makes something as advanced as loop quantum gravity intelligible is quite a miracle. It also is a lesson for scientists to write as simply as possible, so as to reveal the essence of their theory.

Insightful views on physics and our role in the universe By Dr. Ronald Cappelletti These tightly written lectures do an admirable job of presenting most of the major themes of modern physics and cosmology. To my eye, lesson 6 focuses a bit too much on the role of our "ignorance" and not quite enough on the role of the emergence of new phenomena and physical laws in systems of high complexity involving very large numbers of components such as particles. Lesson 7 is an ambitious, even brave attempt by the author to integrate all of human experience, including our sense of free will and our esthetic response, into the realm of his understanding of science. We are, indeed, stardust, part of the universe. Yet a few nearly universal human phenomena are curiously omitted in this Lucretian view of ourselves. Examples: the human drive for fairness and justice, the religious response found in almost all cultures, the struggle within ourselves that we experience in choosing to do good or evil. But perhaps this is expecting too much. All in all, Rovelli has given us a beautiful little book that is well worth the read.

Through the magic contained in his book “The Complete Encyclopedia of Arthropods”, Max is able to shrink to bug-size and appear on Bug Island. While attending his friend’s birthday party, Max once again is called to Bug Island where he acts as special advisor to General Barton, the titan beetle who heads the Battle Bugs. This time, General Barton asks Max to improve the Battle Bugs’ defenses as the termites build a watchtower so the bug inhabitants of the island sentries can issue a warning when the reptiles are crossing from Reptile IslandIn “Battle Bugs: The Chameleon Attack”, well developed bug characters having likeable personalities and their ingenious human friend Max Darwin, again combine forces to defeat their villainous reptile foes. I am sure he will find “The Chameleon Attack” an exciting addition to the Battle Bugs series and that I will be reading it to him more than once.

I love all the Battle Bugs books. They are easy to read and enticing. I think they are a great encouragement for reading once you get far enough into it to care about the characters. That initial getting into it may not be easy, but it would be worth it.

It was not only a simple way for me to stay in tune with the Earth despite our crazy out of tune lives, but it makes for a beautiful piece of art. Inspired and fascinating bridge between the cosmic and gregorian By Vinny Tafuro I have been using the calendar since July of 2015 and have found it very fascinating and inspiring. I was introduced to Julie's calendar at a serendipitous time when my summer reading had lead me to more closely examine the influence of moon phases on humans and all animals. This was also the year I began a consistent - nearly daily journaling practice. Together these have illuminated my perception of time and place.The calendar hangs framed on the wall in my foyer, reminding me daily as I come and go of the larger natural cycles that influence us. In just four months I am as aware of our lunar phases as I am the days and weeks of the month. With continued use I am sure that my cosmic awareness will expand.While spiritual in nature my personality and mindset are very logic based. My life's work and projects are always solidly based in science. I find Julie's calendar to be very useful in helping me bridge the gap between our natural connection to cosmic time and our modern gregorian overlay.

I read them to my 4 year old niece, and she did hear a few words that I had to define for her (e.g. "Reluctant"). The plot and characters were cute. I'd say the only thing that I would add would be more pictures every now and then. I like to use pictures as discussion points for the younger kiddos (at work and at home). Plus, the pictures that are in the book are adorable so it'd be nice to see more.I received this book at a discounted price for my honest opinion.

My son is currently under a year, however I enjoy reading to him. I enjoyed the imagination in the bedtime stories, especially "Little Star Friends" the wonderful trip little Charlie went on with his star friends and the fact they helped him on the trip was great. I also liked the connection in the awake world after his mother woke him up. I want to inspire my son to follow his dream and embrace his imagination these stories help him to do so. I cant wait to get the next book by Uncle Amon I see him being a favorite in our house hold

I have grandchildren ranging from 2 to 12 years of age. I was excited with the company when they allowed me to read their book,"Bedtimes Stories", for free, for an honest review. I had no problems with downloading this book on to my kindle. The story line kept my grandchildren up on my lap through the whole story. There was no wiggling to get down to watch tv or to play. Bedtime Stories encourages children to build on their dreams and teaches them to talk openly about them. About the Author Charles Darwin was an English naturalist and author best-known for his revolutionary theories on the origin of species, human evolution, and natural selection. A life-long interest in the natural world led Darwin to neglect his medical studies and instead embark on a five-year scientific voyage on the HMS Beagle, where he established his reputation as a geologist and gathered much of the evidence that fuelled his later theories.A prolific writer, Darwin s most famous published works include The Voyage of the Beagle, On the Origin of Species, The Descent of Man, and Selection in Relation to Sex, and The Expression of Emotions in Man and Animals. Darwin died in 1882, and in recognition of his contributions to science, is buried in Westminster Abbey along with John Herschel and Isaac Newton.

Webster When Charles Darwin in 1859 finally made public his theory of evolution by natural selection in “On the Origin of Species”, he avoided writing about human evolution, except for saying that “Light will be thrown on the origin of man and his history.”But by the early 1870s he felt confident enough to openly discuss the evolution of humans from animals. He did this in “The Descent of Man” (1871) and in this book, “The Expression of Emotions in Man and Animals” (1872).In “The Expression of Emotions” Darwin’s main aim was to show that humans are not separate from animals. He shows the origins of human facial expressions in the animal world, and he argues that human expressions are innate and universal (the same in all cultures).I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in Darwin’s ideas. But in my view it is not Darwin at his best. It has been pointed out that there are two main weaknesses in the book. Firstly, Darwin focuses mainly on the emotional roots of facial expressions and says too little about the role of expressions in communication.Secondly, despite having developed the revolutionary (and correct) theory of natural selection as the mechanism for evolutionary change, Darwin mistakenly allowed a subsidiary role for the Lamarckian idea of the inheritance of acquired characteristics. This book is unfortunately full of examples of this latter idea.In recent decades the book has also featured in controversies over the so-called “nature versus nurture” debate. Social anthropologist Margaret Mead argued that human facial expressions are learned, not innate, and that they vary from one culture to another. Psychologist Paul Eckman, on the other hand, says that Mead has been proved wrong and that Darwin was correct in saying that human facial expressions are the same in all societies, reflecting their evolutionary and genetic rather than cultural origins.But even if Ekman is correct on the specific issue of facial expressions, this does not mean that we can explain all other aspects of human behaviour primarily in genetic terms, as biological/genetic determinists claim. Ekman says that both nature and nurture play a part in determining human behaviour, which is clearly true, but he himself actually seems to lean much more towards the “nature” side. In fact he has claimed that “Darwin led the way not only in the biological sciences but in the social sciences as well.” Ekman seems to be using Darwin’s “Expressions” book as a stick with which to beat those who put forward social explanations of human behaviour.In fact it is not just social scientists who argue that we cannot explain all human behaviour in biological terms. Evolutionary theorists like Stephen Jay Gould and Richard Lewontin also show that humans have evolved to be creatures which, because of their large brain, are very flexible in their behaviour. The result is that much of our behaviour (though perhaps not our facial expressions) is learned and therefore the result of social factors and interactions.I am a great fan of Charles Darwin, and Darwin may well have been right about facial expressions being largely innate, but we should not try to use Darwinism to explain our society (and its problems).Phil Webster.(England)

As Muth explains in the author's note, Zen Socks was inspired "by all of the unexpected way I have benefitted from those who have 'socked it to me.'" Readers meet Leo and Molly, siblings who have moved into a new neighborhood and are delighted to discover that the unusual panda ("'What's his name again?' asked Leo. 'Mister…Quietpuddle?'") is their neighbor. When Molly expresses the desire to be a famous ballerina with her name on glittery posters, Stillwater tells "The Taste of Banzo's Sword," a humorous tale adapted from Paul Reps's Zen Flesh, Zen Bones (Tuttle, 1957), which emphasizes the importance of patience. Later, Leo and Stillwater muse about the nature of "bad guys" and selfishness. Finally, the trio heads to the beach where they find starfish stranded on the shore. Though there are too many starfish and it seems nearly impossible to help, the siblings rally, coming to understand that even very small acts of kindness make a difference. Muth once again employs dual styles: sumi ink–style black-and-white drawings for the Banzo's Sword story, and loose, light-filled watercolors for the scenes with Stillwater and the children. The compositions create a tranquil atmosphere and an appropriately Zenlike airiness, allowing young readers to focus on the character's interactions and observations. There are certainly lessons here, but they are imparted with gentle grace and respect for a child's developing sensibilities. His stories are well written and remind us about what is really important. This book is no exception. It is beautifully illustrated and full of life lessons about being present, generosity, and compassion. Muth uses a giant panda named Stillwater to tell ancient Buddhist tales to the neighborhood kids. Stillwater's story telling, combined with the calm watercolor images bring the fables to life, and make them relatable to the youngest of children. Pick this one up today. You won't be disappointed.

In thisbook, the author brings a more explicit environmental theme into several of Stillwater's teachings andinspires his new young human friends to engage in saving species that live far from theirneighborhood street.

A Good Vampire Thriller But Has Its Shortcomings By Sol Okay, so being a teen girl these days means that one has to have heard of Twilight and/ or read and become obsessed with it. I liked Twilight, sure, but it wasn't my favorite. So what does all of this have to do with Heather Crews' 'Prince of Misery'...? My wanting to find a better vampire book than the Twilight saga, that's what. I've read my fair share of vampire related novels, and I must admit that they're not my favorite topic, and I do prefer old fashioned literature and sci-fi a bit more, but this genre is always a good pass-time.Now, coming back to this book; I had been trying to get my hands on a copy of this for months, and my chance finally came about when I found myself in need of signing up for an Amazon account to purchase my AP Lang. and Composition texts. I waited a week and a half for this book to arrive via regular shipping, and low and behold it shows up six days later than the estimated arrival. Once I received it, I took the first opportunity I had to dig in and blaze through the thing, and WHAT do I find after all of my 'misery' (forgive the pun) in trying to get the thing in the first place? The author had a half-formed idea, slapped it down on paper and published it without, what seems to be, even thinking about editing it. There were up to, and beyond, two grammatical and spelling errors per page (for such a short book, this is deplorable), and the writing can be said to be a mediocre attempt at sophistication, at best.Now, don't get me wrong, this was a GOOD book, and it was a nice vacation from the main-streamers such as the Twilight Saga, The Historian, Dracula, and The Vampire Diaries. Had the author and her publishing company taken even a passing glance at the writing and spent ten minutes editing the thing, I might've given this a 4.5 out of 5 instead of a 3. With this said, if they had tried harder it could have beaten out Twilight in the long run...but they didn't, and by doing this they lost my respect.My advice to anyone looking to purchase this book is this: buy a used copy that's about half the 'new' price. It isn't worth paying twenty dollars for when it's not even hard-back and the publishers obviously aren't spending the money by hiring a decent editor.

Heather Crews was able to take vampirism to a realm its never been brought to before, unlike the Historian which ends up extremely boring after about 300 pages the Prince of Misery is awesome through and through.
