Buzz Lightyear Goes to Jupiter to Battle Ota Benga By Amazon Customer Unrealistic characters working in a bubble - no context like family considerations, ambitions, hangups, or back story. Each character is an idealized cookie-cutter clone derring-do sci-fi action hero. Antagonists are portrayed as sub-human, acting only on evil barbaric instinct. In fact, the book's treatment of anyone who isn't a westernized man is offensive by today's standards, consistent with the attitudes that led to the exhibition of the African man Ota Benga in the Bronx Zoo monkey house in the early 1900s.On the positive side, the plot is mildly entertaining. Also, since the book was published in 1931, the appalling disrespect for anyone outside of western culture is an interesting first-hand account of the way people thought in that time period. The very dated scientific speculations about other planets is also amusing and a reminder of how far we've come in the last 50 to 100 years.
