It does exactly what the title says: talks about the use of lime for improving soil quality. Included is a section on testing soil PH and discussions on how different kinds of lime are (were?) produced. Application techniques and a discussion on several plants that especially benefit from lime are also included. It seemed to me that there was a special focus on pasture and hay crops like clover and grasses. In the Kindle version of this book, the index is an interactive table which allows you to easily find the section you are interested in, however, the illustrations listed are not included in the kindle version.I would recommend this book to those interested in history of agriculture as well as modern day organic farmers. There is a lot of relevant information in this book that is still applicable to those working with non-chemical methods of farming today.

A classic that's still relevant today By magellan The Right Use of Lime in Soil Improvement was one of the many publications in basic agriculture that came out of the early 20th century research by the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture at various experimental stations around the U.S., some of which had been established in the late 19th century, especially in states like New York and Ohio. By the early 20th century, many of these stations were literally booming with projects intended to help the average farmer and improve land use and crop yields.Their influence was enormous and many other countries and researchers (such as the great agricultural botanist, geneticist, and horticulturalist, Nicholai I. Vavilov in Russia, who eventually oversaw hundreds of agricultural stations all across Russia in the middle of the last century) were influenced to adopt a similar approach. At the time Russian crop yields were only 25% of what was being achieved in Western Europe and the U.S. By implementing a few basic improvements Vavilov was able to achieve a several fold increase in crop yields, saving millions of people from starvation. In one of history's greatest ironies, Vavilov died of starvation in prison during one of Stalin's purges.I got this book as a freebie on my new Kindle and started reading the first section just to start learning how to use and navigate on the device, and despite the archaic writing style it was obvious the information was as important and relevant today as it was a hundred years ago and I found it was interesting enough to read the entire book, which is only 120 pages. Written without the use of math or chemistry, it explains in language any farmer could understand exactly what they need to know about such topics as testing and determining soil acidity, lime load per acre, types of lime materials (ground or pulverized limestone, fresh-burned lime, air-slaked lime, magnesian lime, hydrated lime, calcium hydroxide, caustic lime, etc.) optimal calcareous grain size, diagnostic plants for acidic conditions (red clover, aslike clover, sorrel, plantain, etc.), and even the local economics of small, economical limestone rock crushers and grinders for small community use that had just been developed at the time.In a way the book transported me back to an earlier time when the U.S. was still mainly an agricultural economy. Already by the 1890s, amazingly, the U.S. (along with Germany), was a leading producer of electrical machinery and chemicals, but it wasn't until 1926 that the U.S. reached and surpassed the demographic milestone where half of the population was now living in the cities vs. the farms. The book explains that in contrast to soils west of the Rockies, which are often calcareous, loamy, well drained soils with greater amounts of lime, that mid-western and eastern soils often being clay derived are more impacted, nutrient poor, and lime deficient. I was used to the soils in California and kept wondering why my lawn was harder to maintain even with the much greater amount of rain on the east coast and this book explained why. Weeds such as plantain, sorrel, and several different species of clover are much more likely to invade and crowd out grass under lime deficient conditions, and now I know my lawn needs an application of lime as well as fertilizer. As a city boy and engineer all I knew was that lime-deficient clay soils were good for making bricks and pots and high tech things like ceramic jet engine turbine blades. The author points out that the soils will still be deficient and acidic even with adequate applications of phosphorus and nitrogen, which I was already doing, and things still weren't right with my lawn which was being invaded by crab grass, which was much less aggressive on my lawn back in California. After reading this book I realized that I was missing the lime and Agee points out that as many as 9 out of 10 land holdings in the mid-west and east are deficient in lime compared to places in the west like California.California has its own problems, though, such as large areas of serpentine rock derived soils. Serpentine soils are magnesium rich but deficient in other nutrients and require the correct treatment to be productive much as many eastern plots do. In California there are vast stands of so-called "pygmy forests" especially in Mendocino County, whose trees have been stunted by the serpentine soil. These areas have a unique ecology of plants that tolerate these conditions, but you can see the effect of the poor soil on the stunted trees, which can be hundreds of years old and only 40 or 50 feet high. But getting back to the eastern soil conditions, knowing a bit of historical geology, I had wrongly assumed that the soils in the east, being derived from mountains that eroded hundreds of millions of years earlier than the Sierras where I used to live, that all the nutrients would have dissolved out of the rock long ago and be available to any plants. Well, that is true, except that since calcium carbonate minerals are more easily dissolved, eroded, and washed away by water action, the lime had disappeared due to normal drainage a long time ago. So much for what I knew about agricultural chemistry. :-) Now I know that a simple application of the right kind of lime will solve my problem.Overall, this is a still a great classic in basic agriculture which manages to pass along a great detail of useful information without being overly technical. Despite the boring sounding subject it was actually an interesting read and relevant to my own situation even though I'm not a farmer.

A good historical perspective on liming soil By William D Detlefsen This is a great book if you are interested in the historical development of agricultural thinking. It is written in about 1916 when the main virtue of liming was believed to be pH control and before William Albrect. It provides a timeless description of various grades of lime. Information that most people have forgotten.

The risks of global warming are pressing and potentially vast. The difficulty of doing without fossil fuels is daunting, possibly even insurmountable. So there is an urgent need to rethink our responses to the crisis. To meet that need, a small but increasingly influential group of scientists is exploring proposals for planned human intervention in the climate system: a stratospheric veil against the sun, the cultivation of photosynthetic plankton, fleets of unmanned ships seeding the clouds. These are the technologies of geoengineering--and as Oliver Morton argues in this visionary book, it would be as irresponsible to ignore them as it would be foolish to see them as a simple solution to the problem.

The Planet Remade explores the history, politics, and cutting-edge science of geoengineering. Morton weighs both the promise and perils of these controversial strategies and puts them in the broadest possible context. The past century's changes to the planet--to the clouds and the soils, to the winds and the seas, to the great cycles of nitrogen and carbon--have been far more profound than most of us realize. Appreciating those changes clarifies not just the scale of what needs to be done about global warming, but also our relationship to nature.

Climate change is not just one of the twenty-first century's defining political challenges. Morton untangles the implications of our failure to meet the challenge of climate change and reintroduces the hope that we might. He addresses the deep fear that comes with seeing humans as a force of nature, and asks what it might mean--and what it might require of us--to try and use that force for good.

Review One of The Independent's 6 Best Books in Nature 2015 One of The Guardian's Best Books of 2015, selected by Hari Kunzru One of The Guardian's Best Science Books of 2015 One of LinkedIn's Best Business Books of 2015 Longlisted for the 2015 Samuel Johnson Prize for Nonfiction"[I]f you are going to read one book on climate engineering, it should be The Planet Remade. . . . [The book] is as much an exploration of science and engineering as it is of people and attitudes."--Jane C.S. Long, Nature"Morton offers a calm, rational discussion of deliberate technological interventions to cool the planet's climate system. . . . An important account of cutting-edge research that will fascinate serious readers and demand the attention of policymakers."--Kirkus (Starred Review)"[An] ambitious, enthralling, and slightly strange book."--Bryan Appleyard, Sunday Times"Morton accomplishes the difficult task of explaining high-level scientific concepts in pragmatic terms, with enough history, first-person reporting, anecdotes, and humor that The Planet Remade is as enjoyable to read as it is informative."--Foreword Reviews"Through pages of rigorous scientific groundwork wrapped in elegant prose, Morton provides a guided tour of why we need geoengineering. . . . The Planet Remade is a delightful introduction to the seemingly absurd proposals that could be our fragile world's final hope."--Science News"Oliver Morton produced 2015's most important and insightful book about the environment in The Planet Remade. . . . Several people who should know better argued this year that humanity needs to adopt a more 'religious' view of climate change. It does not. What it needs is books by Oliver Morton."--Richard Benson, The Independent"[A] dizzying, exhausting, exhilarating read."--New Scientist"Morton affords us a fascinating look at the perils and promise of geoengineering on a warming planet."--Wan Lixin, Shanghai Daily"[A] thoughtfully written and meticulously reported volume that explores the nascent and controversial field of deliberate technological interventions in the climate--interventions meant to cool the planet."--Pacific Standardz

From the Back Cover

"Oliver Morton displays here again the usual virtues of his writing, which include a sparkling clarity maintained even when conveying huge complex masses of information, often about topics new to all of us; and then, even more importantly, good judgment. He makes distinctions when evaluating gnarly problems, and explains the distinctions very persuasively, and with a generous dry wit. All these abilities are now devoted to perhaps the crucial question of our time, the climate, making this simply a Necessary Book, which is also a pleasure to read. Maybe that combination makes it sui generis, but in any case it's an important addition to current discourse, an excellent way to get oriented to our most pressing environmental problem, and I urge people to read it and ponder its news."--Kim Stanley Robinson, author of Red Mars and Aurora

"This is the first book to properly consider the dimensions of the new world we are living in. Morton's book is indispensable, highly readable, and incredibly timely."--Mark Lynas, author of The God Species

"A scholar and a fine literary stylist, Oliver Morton sets the geoengineering debate in a fascinating historical and social context. The Planet Remade is much the best book on the subject and deserves a wide readership."--Martin Rees, author of Our Final Century

"One of the most important and provocative books I've read in years. The Planet Remade is essential for policymakers, environmentalists, skeptics, and anyone else who prefers their views on climate change to be based on evidence rather than rhetoric."--Hari Kunzru, author of Gods without Men

"Written with the grace and clarity its subject demands, The Planet Remade offers just what the issue of climate change needs: fresh thinking about what can be done, based on deep respect for the planet, the science, and the concerns of people with differing points of view. It's an enriching addition to the literature of possible worlds."--Marek Kohn, author of A Reason for Everything and Turned Out Nice

"Deeply rooted in history and smartly optimistic about the future, this is--by far--the best book yet on geoengineering."--David Keith, Harvard University and author of A Case for Climate Engineering

"In Morton's new book, he takes on some of the most challenging issues of our age. It is a readable and thought-provoking look at humanity's dance with hubristic ideas and deeds regarding the manipulation of the environment on a planetary scale. He is clearly one of the best science writers of our day."--Steven Hamburg, Environmental Defense Fund

"Taking a sensible and low-key approach to a rather provocative subject, Morton shows why geoengineering is something that the mainstream will need to consider--it's not something just for the fringes."--Ken Caldeira, Carnegie Institution for Science

"Morton accessibly describes the potential and risks of geoengineering and puts them in the context of climate change and other large-scale interventions that humans have had on the earth system or might seek to have in the future."--Tim Kruger, University of Oxford

"Engaging, persuasive, and thought provoking. Morton discusses the potential role and consequences of geoengineering and puts forward his own carefully considered views on the subject. The Planet Remade is a tour de force of wide-ranging scholarship as well as a soundly argued polemic."--John Shepherd, University of Southampton

About the Author Oliver Morton is briefings editor at the Economist, and his writing has appeared in leading publications such as the New Yorker and National Geographic. He is the author of Eating the Sun: How Plants Power the Planet and Mapping Mars: Science, Imagination, and the Birth of a World. He lives in London.

By Holly Jean If you go to a library and peruse the shelves of what writers from past decades thought future technologies might be like, you're liable to find some funny stuff. I expect that many of the existing books on geoengineering will be quaintly amusing to library-goers of 2050 or 2100.This book, however, I expect to have a long shelf-life: it's written not just for the present moment or the next climate conference, but for posterity; it will help future generations understand the deliberations & decisions of this time.Firstly, it's not plain "science writing"— this "book about the boundaries between physical planets and imagined worlds" is rich with history, & the best passages are literary or philosophical. The earthsystem is evoked as lived dynamic experience: "like wind on the skin, or the tremor in the ground from rushing water nearby, or lightning sensed through shut eyelids..."That said, there is a lot of accessibly-explained science. I've seen the Mt. Pinatubo powerpoint slide projected more times than I can count, but never fully grasped where climate modeling was at the time of Pinatubo, or understood the contribution of the eruption to climate science, before reading this book. I learned more about the stratosphere here than in 50 lectures on geoengineering; that is, I learned about it in a whole manner— not just stratosphere-as-object or place, but about the human conception of it and how that evolved. One of the book's gifts is its ability to easily place geoengineering into alignment with history; to tell the broader story — about both the earthsystem, and "men of human empire; the sort of men who can attract the interest and admiration of wealthier and more powerful men." You'll read about imperialism & the opening and closing of the frontier; about the jaded, gilded fin de siecle (lack of) spirit. In a media ecology that doesn't lend itself to seeing events within the broad context of history, this is quite refreshing — this subject really did need a book-length treatment that was more than just reportage. Speaking of grand narratives of history, I appreciate that this book doesn't hang its hat on "the Anthropocene"; it reckons with the term without making it central or a key tag. Smart move. There's a lot here I sympathize with — for example, the critique that natural and social scientists make the mistake of talking "as though what geoengineering is has already been decided, rather than treating it as something still up for grabs"; the argument that broadening the debate is not just about bringing more and different expertise in, but reimagining it. The comparison to human intervention in the nitrogen cycle was well-argued and compelling.I do wish the book had discussed gender in relation to its topic, and I'm curious to hear how the scenario near the end is received. The text suffers a bit from the syndrome of nearly all "environmental" books these days: you spend all your chapters tracing the roots and contours of a present phenomenon, and then there's only a chapter left for the future (Morton has made it explicit that the problem / solution framing is not useful here, so I won't use those terms, but it seems like a variation on the classic problem / solution book). Perhaps a companion volume is needed.Yet my favorite thing about this book is how nestles its utopian dream comfortably in small passages scattered throughout the text — there's no program, no bullet points, no grand utopian design, no grandstanding or ego-driven polemic: just a humble, powerful seed-planting type of strategy to encourage the reader to think & imagine. The basic idea: that exploring geoengineering "could spurt and shape the development of a new way of making planetary decisions", not just to develop a new thermostat, but to develop "a new hand to use it". The basic question: how can the challenge of remaking the planet "be used to bring about a world that could be trusted with the power to meet that challenge"? The simple-machines metaphor of levers and fulcrums used throughout actually works for me — no more spoilers here, though, you'll have to read it, and then, perhaps, be compelled to work with it.

Frederick This is a book everybody who is interested in climate change should read, regardless of his political opinion. The book is a bit tedious, as is the subject if persued rigerously and thoughly. The subject of climate change presents no simple, easy answers and many, many trade-offs and compromises. This book explores those issues. Early on, the author asks the reader to answer two questions: Do you think human activity impacts the climate? Do you think the problem is difficult to solve? The author posits that most people fall into two groups: the No - Yes group and the Yes - No group. The author and I ane in the the Yes - Yes group which may explain why I appreciate this difficult book.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Informative and optimistic By SLB Engagingly written -- I could hardly put it down! -- comprehensive, thorough, and optimistic without being credulous, this book contains a wealth of information about the "earthsystem" (as Morton likes to call it) and the effects we're already having on it as well as those we could potentially create intentionally. The book makes an excellent case for expanding research into geoengineering, and I hope it gets widely read.

Seventh Sense - Pet Behavior Newsletter By William E Campbell (...)Seventh Senseby Diane Arrington1st Books Library($) paperbackIf you ever want to just put the world and its horrific visions aside for a mental/emotional therapeutic hour or so, get Diane Arrington's new book, epublished and amazingly economical in both editions, the electronic and paperback.Since 1975, this insightful and prolific author has been sharing her concepts and dreams with readers. However, Seventh Sense is unique in its superbly written accounts of events between animals and people and animals, even dogs and ducks. The mental images will make for countless moments of reverie when the pressures of life become unbearable. Its forty-six fascinating chapter-stories of people/animal adventures are crowned, for my mind, by Chapter 46, the story of Sandy and Waldo, a dog and a duck, whose reunion could bring tears from the hearts of the most cynical among us. Throughout it, the author avoided making "monkeys" out of the pets' owners, showing that her compassion knows no bounds. Get it, then leave it on the coffee table for a fast-fix from stress. As another reviewer so accurately noted, THE perfect antidote for stressful days. You will enjoy reading it again and again.I've been fortunate enough to have the help of Ms. Arrington to identify and correct a serious sibling rivalry/pack order issue in our own home and found she is every bit as compassionate, patient, gentle and wise in person to both animals and owners alike. Without her knowledegable guidance we would not have been able to keep our animal family together. Just as wonderful is how great our relationships are with our pets now that we use her method...so relaxed and calm. No need to clap hands and shout "no barking!" when we get even faster, happier results by quietly saying, "shhhh" or "gentle". Nope, I didn't think that possible, having tried everything from traditional techniques to Cesar's Way to New Skete monks, until we followed her PetPerfect method. Training went from a dreaded chore to fun, for both the dogs and us! Results the same day, amazing changes within the first ten days. Without ever being harsh, raising our voice, or inflicting pain. Our dogs understand what we're asking and WANT to obey. I'm sorry to see Amazon does not yet carry her other books, which are training manuals. But you can get them from her website (petPerfect.com)if you cannot enlist her services in person.

Nicely written, endearing stories that young children will love to hear read to them over and over again. These are peaceful, pleasant stories that are perfect for bed-time reading.GOODNIGHT, GOODNIGHT, CONSTRUCTION SITE is an endearing story of all the construction working hard during the day, then turning in for a well-deserved sleep at night. "Now dump truck's tired and wants to sleep."STEAM TRAIN DREAM TRAIN is a cute tale about all the animals loading up the train's cargo. When done, the weary crew hops on board, and settles in for the journey:"The Weary crew can rest their heads, and settle in, and tuck in tight,Their work is finished for tonight."Of course, the long-necked giraffe sits in the caboose, with his head sticking out through the sunroof--where else would he fit?Beautiful illustrations throughout, solid "board" pages make this a real winner. This is an absolutely delightful set!

I wanted the other construction book and it was going for the same price as a single, why not buy the set?Well it turns out I didn't read the fine print, these books are much smaller than the original book I had. They're also cardboard. Which to my surprise is even better for letting my 2 year old read the book as he can't rip pages.

By Amazon Customer Free Fall is a spin off from the Loving Summer Series taking place ten years later where Summer, Drew, Nat, and Rachel are in their late 20s. A much more mature series than the Loving Summer Series, fans of steamy novels would love Free Fall. Fans of action and suspense would delight in the fast pace and unpredictable twists and turns. A fast read, I can't wait for more in this series and from this author.

Throughout history, the influence of the full Moon on humans and animals has featured in folklore and myths. Yet it has become increasingly apparent that many organisms really are influenced indirectly, and in some cases directly, by the lunar cycle. Breeding behaviour among some marine animals has been demonstrated to be controlled by internal circalunar biological clocks, to the point where lunar-daily and lunar-monthly patterns of Moon-generated tides are embedded in their genes. Yet, intriguingly, Moon-related behaviours are also found in dry land and fresh water species living far beyond the influence of any tides. In Moonstruck, Ernest Naylor dismisses the myths concerning the influence of the Moon, but shows through a range of fascinating examples the remarkable real effects that we are now finding through science. He suggests that since the advent of evolution on Earth, which occurred shortly after the formation of the Moon, animals evolved adaptations to the lunar cycle, and considers whether, if Moon-clock genes occur in other animals, might they also exist in us?

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Lunacy we can use By David Wineberg In our anthropocentric world, we rely on the sun. We have internal circadian clocks that our bodies use to regulate our systems. We can throw them off by quickly changing time zones, but we pay the price in jet lag. If we let them do their work, they give us homeostasis, the best place to be. But there’s more to the world than us. All kinds of species regulate by the moon and the tides. Some have two clocks – sun and moon - and employ them as needed. Moonstruck examines a wide variety of species from insects to fish to turtles and birds, and how they take advantage of these entirely predictable benchmarks of the year. The sheer variety of lunar use by earthbound species is daunting. Dung beetles can walk a straight line in the dark by monitoring polarized moonlight. Various aquatic species breed according to high and low tides, depending on whether they want their spawn to spread or stay close. Some employ the tides to land them at specific places on the beach and take them out again. Or up an estuary and out again. Sooty terns breed every tenth lunar cycle, making them seem chaotically random to us and our sun-based prejudices. And of course, we interfere with those who employ pure moonlight, such as turtles, by posting spotlights on beaches to deter the amorous.Much like our poor sense of smell compared to dogs, or our poor sense of sight compared to raptors, we seem to have little way of leveraging the moon in our personal lives. Naylor has searched high and low for proof, and is quick to tell us there is no substantiation for this claim, or there is solid proof for that claim, or it looks like this other claim is going to be proven undeniably, just not yet. What I came away with was awe for the many brilliant ways species leverage the moon that we could never even consider. We have only just begun to examine, catalog and prove them. We have no idea which species are doing what. It is a huge, largely untapped area, dependent on us not losing the species before we know. They have a lot to teach us.David Wineberg

By lyndonbrecht This is an agreeable book on a topic of considerable interest, but it doesn't really have much in the way of answers. Does the moon have an impact on life? The answer in this book is on some species, yes, but on humans, maybe or maybe not.Naylor looks at some cultural understandings. For example, the Maya didn't see a man in the moon, they saw a rabbit in the moon. He also discusses some biology where there is an impact. There's evidence that some fish respond to moonlight rather than tides, rising or descending in the water column depending on the light, and there appears to be a tie-in with breeding in some species. Night hunting activity is suppressed by bright moonlight for some species of predators. And my favorite, African dung beetles cab use moon to figure out direction. That's what the book left with me, some interesting trivia and history.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Not your regular gardening book By manfrmlab This is a wonderful collection of time-honored techniques to keep soil fertile without the need to buy fertilizers. The book reads as if an old farmer is telling you how he works the land, when he plants and the key issues to look out for that do not help, or degrade the land. I am very familiar with different clovers and catch crops, but the very simple manner that is used to lay out the process was amazing. The seamless nature of planting crop after crop to insure the land remained fertile was refreshing. One could readily identify a couple grasses or cash crops to grow whether you had livestock or not. The author did include information on commercial fertilizers and homemade mixtures to augment solis and I was pleased that it was near the end so the natural flow of planting to generate good tilthe and productiveness of soils could be appreciated. I decided that I would read the book and re-read it later to make planting notes. If you couldn't tell, I really enjoyed this book.

Its a very good book, the information is still very relevant in this day and age. Especially if you are interested in doing things with no or minimal chemical inputs. Also the fact that some farmers are going back to actual horse power this book is helpful. Also he works on the Old MacDonald farm model since that was what was the standard at the time. The Kindle dictionary feature is very helpful when reading this book. I am pretty well read but my turn of the century English is not so good. Ha ha.

The Age of Innocence: Titan Illustrated Classics, by Edith Wharton

Amazon.com Review Somewhere in this book, Wharton observes that clever liars always come up with good stories to back up their fabrications, but that really clever liars don't bother to explain anything at all. This is the kind of insight that makes The Age of Innocence so indispensable. Wharton's story of the upper classes of Old New York, and Newland Archer's impossible love for the disgraced Countess Olenska, is a perfectly wrought book about an era when upper-class culture in this country was still a mixture of American and European extracts, and when "society" had rules as rigid as any in history.

From Library Journal This 19th-century classic, read by Andrew Sachs, is a tale of betrayal, gold, and love, encased in the elegant symmetrical structure so popular in traditional English fiction, featuring Marner, the weaver, who is framed for theft by his best friend and becomes a recluse, focusing his strong affections only on the store of golden coins he receives in payment for his work. As usual, Chivers has produced an excellent audio presentation of a literary masterpiece. Alas, in this day and age fewer and fewer readers not enrolled in literature classes actually read the works of what are frequently referred to as "dead white males" even if, as in this case, they were actually written by a woman. For this reason, this title is recommended for all academic but only larger public libraries.-I. Pour-El, Iowa State Univ., Ames Copyright 2000 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Passion and the outsider By EA Solinas It was a glittering, sumptuous time when hypocrisy was expected, discreet infidelity tolerated, and unconventionality ostracized. That is the Gilded Age, and nobody knew its hypocrises better than Edith Wharton.... and nobody portrayed them as well. "The Age of Innocence" is a trip back in time to the stuffy upper crust of "old New York," taking us through one respectable man's hopeless love affair with a beautiful woman -- and the life he isn't brave enough to have.Newland Archer, of a wealthy old New York family, has become engaged to pretty, naive May Welland. But as he tries to get their wedding date moved up, he becomes acquainted with May's exotic cousin, Countess Ellen Olenska, who has returned home after dumping her cheating husband. At first, the two are just friends, but Newland becomes more and more entranced by the Countess' easy, free-spirited European charm. After Newland marries May, the attraction to the mysterious Countess and her free, unconventional life becomes even stronger. He starts to rebel in little ways, but he's still mired in a 100% conventional marriage, job and life. Will he become an outcast and go away with the beautiful countess, or will he stick with May and the safe, dull life that he has condemned in others? There's nothing too scandalous about "Age of Innocence" in a time when starlets acquire and discard boyfriends and husbands like old pantyhose -- it probably wasn't in the 1920s when it was first published. But then, this isn't a book about sexiness and steam -- it's part bittersweet romance, part social satire, and a look at what happens when human beings lose all spontaneity and passion.Part of this is due to Wharton's portrayal of New York in the 1870s -- opulent, cultured, pleasant, yet so tied up in tradition that few people in it are able to really open up and live. It's a haze of ballrooms, gardens, engagements, and careful social rituals that absolutely MUST be followed, even if they have no meaning. It's a place "where the real thing was never said or done or even thought."And Wharton writes distant, slightly mocking prose that outlines this sheltered little society. Her writing opens as slowly and beautifully as a rosebud, letting subtle subplots and powerful, hidden emotions drive the story. So don't be discouraged by the endless conversations about flowers, ballrooms, gloves and old family scandals that don't really matter anymore. In the middle of all this, Newland is a rather dull, intelligent young man who thinks he's unconventional. But he becomes more interesting as he struggles between his conscience and his longing for the Countess. And as "Age of Innocence" winds on, you gradually see that he doesn't truly love the Countess, but what she represents -- freedom from society and convention. The other two angles of this love triangle are May and Ellen. May is (suitably) pallid and rather dull, though she shows some different sides in the last few chapters. And Ellen is a magnificent character -- alluring, mysterious, but also bewildered by New York's hostility to her ways. And she's even more interesting when you realize that she isn't trying to rebel, but simply being herself."Age of Innocence" is a subtle look at life in Gilded Age New York, telling the story of a man desperately in love with a way of life he hasn't got the courage to pursue. Exquisite in its details, painful in its beauty.

A book that should be shared between mothers and daughters By A Customer I find it interesting and in some ways disturbing how few (openly at least) female viewpoints are expressed among the reviews of this book. Indeed, some of reviews make it appear that there are quite a few males out there who believe females are a sexual "tabula rasa" on which they can write their judgements of what constitutes morally appropriate behavior. This book must be understood not simply as art, but as a psychological statement, namely that sexuality exists within each of us from infancy on and parents and society deny that at their own risk. When I was the age of the girls in this book there was no one with the courage to come forward and openly depict the flowering of female sexuality. I lived with confusion and shame about my body and my desires, hurtful feelings that lasted until I was well into my adulthood.I came across this book in a store one day while looking for something else. I spotted the title and I vaguely remembered a news story about some people wanting to ban it, so I thought I would look at it out of curiosity. The images in it were so beautiful I almost started to cry right there, it was as though I found vindication for the very core of my being. After taking it home, I decided to share it with my nine-year old daughter with whom I had just recently had "The Talk". It was wonderful being able to show her how her body would change and how she would be beautiful even as she changed from a girl into a woman. It is true there are already books out there that are supposed to address the issue, but so often they take a clinical approach that is scary in its own right. The artistry of this book, combined with the photographer's selection of natural-looking girls (you will not find made-up or coiffed girls in the pages of this book), will, in my opinion, help any girl appreciate her changing body.Mothers, share this book with your daughters, it will help make so clear the many changes they are going through and how they are positive. No girl should ever have to feel shame of her own body and this book is an important step.

By Mary Whipple Newland Archer, the protagonist of this ironically entitled novel set in the late nineteenth century, is a proper New York gentleman, and part of a society which adheres to strict social codes, subordinating all aspects of life to doing what is expected, which is synonymous with doing what it right. As the author remarks early in the novel, "Few things were more awful than an offense against Taste." Newland meets and marries May Welland, an unimaginative, shallow young woman whose upbringing has made her the perfect, inoffensive wife, one who knows how to behave and how to adhere to the "rules" of the society in which they live. When Newland is reintroduced to May's cousin, Countess Ellen Olenska, who has left her husband in Europe and now wants a divorce, he finds himself utterly captivated by her independence and her willingness to risk all, socially, by flouting convention. Both Ellen and Newland are products of their upbringing and their culture, however, and they resist their feelings because of their separate social obligations. Various meetings between them suggest that their feelings are far stronger than what is obvious on the surface, and the question of whether they will finally state the obvious or act on their feelings constitutes the plot.Wharton creates an exceptionally realistic picture of New York in the post-Civil War era, a time in which aristocrats of inherited wealth found themselves competing socially with parvenus. Her ability to show the conflict between a person's need for social acceptance and the desire for personal freedom is striking. As the various characters make their peace with their decisions--either to challenge or yield to social dictates--the novel achieves an unusual dramatic tension, subtle because of its lack of direct confrontation and powerful in its effects on individual destinies. This is, in fact, less an "age of innocence" than it is an age of social manipulation.Wharton herself manipulates the reader--some of her best dialogues and scenes are those the characters never actually have--conversations that they imagine, confrontations which they never allow themselves to have, and resolutions which happen through inaction rather than through decision-making. Filled with acute social observations, the novel shows individuals convincing themselves that obeying social dictates is the right thing to do. Though the novel sometimes seems claustrophobic due to its limitations on action, Age of Innocence brilliantly captures the age and attitudes of the era. Mary Whipple

Excerpt from Critical and Miscellaneous EssaysFrom school he went to the university of Cambridge, where he earned reputation by his verses and his oratory, and by his youthful contributions to Charles Knight's Quarterly Magazine. He graduated B.A. in 1822, and M.A. in 1826. He had already entered himself at Lincoln's Inn, and been called to the bar. His real entry into literature was through the gates of the Edinburgh Review, his first effort being a brilliant essay on Milton. During twenty years this first contribution was followed by many others, some upon books, some upon lives of eminent men; of which the best were those on Hastings and Clive, original efforts of his genius working on new material, the gathering of his own eye and ear in the country which they so splendidly describe. His political career was commenced in 1830, under the auspices of Lord Lansdowne, who, seeing an article on the ballot by the young barrister, at once sought him out, and introduced him to Parliament as member for Calne. The Government made him secretary of the Board of Control for India, and thus secured his talents for the service of the Whigs. In 1834 he went to India as a member of the Supreme Council; and having in two years and a half made a considerable addition to his fortune, he came back to England to acquire fame. For a few years he pursued both politics and letters, representing Edinburgh in the House of Commons, and writing articles for the Edinburgh Review. A quarrel with his constituents broke his connection with the House of Commons, and restored him to literature. It is true, the citizens of Edinburgh again chose him as their representative in 1852; but he was little more than a nominal member, for he only spoke once or twice, and then on questions of no public moment. During the last twelve years of his life, his time had been almost solely occupied with the History of England, four volumes of which were completed and published, and a fifth left partly ready for the press, and which afterwards appeared.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. One star for Forgotten Books.Macaulay first: He was an excellent writer in the 18th-century style. He's wordy but eloquent, and his vast learning is obvious but not ostentatious. As he puts it in one of the essays, "Obscurity and affectation are the two worst faults of style." He rarely commits either. Anyone who has read Gibbon, Spencer, and other writers of that style, will forgive Macaulay the occasional purple passage. Most of the essays are on literary subjects - either lives and works of authors (Milton, Machiavelli, Dryden), or are book reviews. The authorial essays are good broad overviews of their subjects' lives and works, together with Macaulay's opinions of them. The book reviews are biographies and histories of famous Englishmen, and Macaulay usually starts by giving his opinion of the book but digresses (at great length!) into his opinion of the events in the book. He was writing for an audience interested in subjects like the English Civil War and the Reform Bill, and familiar with most of their main characters and events. So be prepared for unexplained references to names like Hampden (Cromwell's cousin and aide in the Civil War), Burleigh/Burghley (chief minister to Elizabeth I), and Charles James Fox (parliamentarian of the late 1700s), and for untranslated quotes in Greek, Latin, and French.Macaulay was an opinionated man, and minced no words in his essays. Watching him heap contumely on bad authors and on the Bourbon and Stuart monarchs gets monotonous after a while, but in general his criticisms have factual backing. There are exceptions: what he says about Sir Edward Coke in the essay on Francis Bacon is very close to libel. However, on the whole Macaulay was thoughtful about his opinions and makes them well worth reading. As for Forgotten Books, the company name is appropriate. What they forgot is quality control. The book is a print-on-demand photocopy of one of those old books with two columns of close and tiny print. The font size (8 or so) makes legibility a problem even when the printing is clear, but regrettably Forgotten Books took no pains whatever to clear smudges and blurs from the lettering. Even with a magnifying glass, some of it is illegible. Furthermore, the copy frequently leaves off the last word of a paragraph, and every essay has 10-20 blank spaces where a whole line is missing. If you're good at guessing the context, you can fill in some of the blanks - but shame on a book company for defacing a fine work with a terrible printing!

Excerpt from The Responsibilities of the Novelist, and Other Literary EssaysIt is not here a question of the "unarrived," the "unpublished"; these are the care-free irresponsibles whose hours are halcyon and whose endeavours have all the lure, all the recklessness of adventure. They are not recognized; they have made no standards for themselves, and if they play the saltimbanque and the charlatan nobody cares and nobody (except themselves) is affected. But the writers in question are the successful ones who have made a public and to whom some ten, twenty or a hundred thousand people are pleased to listen. You may believe if you choose that the novelist, of all workers, is independent - that he can write what he pleases, and that certainly, certainly he should never "write down to his readers" - that he should never consult them at all.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Literary criticism from a great American novelist By Karl Janssen This collection of essays by Frank Norris, best know as the author of the novels McTeague and The Octopus, was originally published in 1903, a year after his death, having been compiled under the guidance of his widow, Jeanette Black Norris. These 25 essays on literature and the art of writing were originally published in various American literary journals. In these writings Norris pontificates on the state of American literature and his hopes for the future development of the art form of the novel. As a novelist, Norris was a disciple of Emile Zola, and an ardent proponent of the school of Naturalism. Among American writers, he praises few but singles out William Dean Howells and Bret Harte as his favorites.About half of these essays are included in the Library of America's volume on Frank Norris, simply entitled Novels and Essays, which is what directed me toward this book. That volume from the LOA contains the best of these pieces, and by best I mean the ones that have aged well over the past century and are still relevant to the literary issues of today. A few of the essays included in this volume are not so timeless, for example one piece advises the aspiring novelist of the early twentieth century on how to submit a manuscript, while another asserts that women make great novelists because they are born with sensitive natures, and their occupation as housewives leaves them hours of free time in which to practice their craft.Despite those few antiquated exceptions, overall these are still excellent, thought-provoking essays. Norris's voice is crystal clear and his arguments immediately engaging. Amid all the intellectual discourse he frequently displays an amusing acerbic wit. The primary thrust of these writings is to call for higher standards in literature and to impel American novelists to infuse their works with the "ring of truth" so fundamental to the doctrine of Naturalism. Norris was no elitist of the literary aristocracy, however. He calls for the democratization of literature, and asserts that if a novel doesn't appeal to the common man it is worthless. The points he makes reflect current debates over the merits of "literary" fiction versus "popular" fiction--while one side questions whether Harry Potter is great literature, the other side counters by saying any book that gets people to read is a great book. Norris's theory was that an increase in American literacy, by any means, would eventually elevate the quality of the nation's literature. At the end of this volume there is an extensive bibliography of Norris's work. Although it's not complete, it does bring one's attention to a lot of stories and essays that have slipped through the cracks over the past century. Game for future hunting, perhaps. If you are a fan of Norris's writing, or have an enthusiasm for American literature of the early twentieth century, you will enjoy this book. If you already have the Library of America volume on Norris, this may be overkill for you, but if you just can't get enough of Norris's nonfiction, then by all means track this book down.
