This book is an informed and disenchanted review of the activity of the so-called "Impact Monitoring Systems", which were born in the late 90's. The author happened to be involved in this business right from the outset, when he started his research career. His critique addresses directly the merits of that science, providing the reader with scientific and rigorous arguments against the worth of such an activity, at least in the way in which it is currently being carried out. But this book also brings together the personal and human vicissitudes of the author, experienced during his 16 years spent in Astronomy and Astrophysics research, his views on Science, Life and Society. The book is non-fiction; it is accessible to any (curious) person with a high-school/college level education.

About the Author Germano D'Abramo worked as a researcher in various research institutes and companies in Rome from 1998 to 2014 on near-Earth asteroids population modeling and deflection. He eventually decided to quit professional research and devote himself to high-school physics teaching. His research interests include algorithmic complexity, the second law of thermodynamics, probability and the history and philosophy of physics. Asteroid (16154) Dabramo bears his name.

Geller Before I proceed I guess I should admit to the reader that I hold now, have held in the past, and will hold in the future a role in education and public outreach for science projects sponsored by NASA and the National Science Foundation. I say this because the author of this little volume admits to a lack of understanding of why scientists participate in education and public outreach. To quote the author, "does public outreach make any sense at all?" Obviously, I believe it does. This 87 page little book focuses on the experiences of one researcher who became rather disillusioned with the scientists he was working with in the field of asteroid impact monitoring. There is actually much one can learn from the little book. It is well written and the author is clearly an expert in the probability and statistics associated with monitoring asteroids, especially in the near Earth environment. Unfortunately, the author became so disillusioned with the field and his colleagues, that the book is interspersed with rants against his former colleagues, whom he refers to as the 'clan.' I know what it is like to be jaded by a group of scientists, but I believe the author goes a bit too far. His point is basically that the probability of an impact by any asteroid is overly dramatized by the community, so that they can get more funds and remain in the media. As I said, there is much you can learn about the probability and statistics of asteroid impacts, and that is good. The math can also be applied to other matters in the modern world. It's not only the asteroid impact community that suffers from the media presentation, but others such as the terrorist risk analyses. Take away the math for understanding the probability and statistics, but don't believe that education and public outreach is worthless. I will testify that it is not!
