The sudden sound startled her because the heavy snow had made the world silent and she wasn't expecting anyone until Christmas Eve.Go away, whoever you are, she thought as several white berries bounced onto the floor like miniature ping-pong balls. But the doorbell rang again—for much longer this time—because whoever was outside had decided to jam their thumb against the buzzer.Livvy wished the unwanted caller would vanish, because there was still so much to do before the guests arrived, and the snowfall meant that Stella, her part-time help, hadn't turned up. But you couldn't run a successful business and behave like a prima donna—even if it was only four days before Christmas and you didn't have any room vacancies. She climbed down the ladder with a feeling of irritation that died the instant she opened the door. She was unprepared for the man who stood on her doorstep. A stranger, yet not quite a stranger—although it took a moment for her to place him. He was famous in the horse-racing world she'd once inhabited. Some might say infamous. He was certainly unforgettable with eyes like gleaming jet and rich olive skin that showcased his hawklike features. His hard body spoke of exercise and discipline, and he was the kind of man who would make you take a second glance and then maybe a third. But it wasn't just his appearance or his undeniable charisma that made Livvy blink her eyes in disbelief—it was his lofty status. Because it wasn't just any man who stood there surveying her so unsmilingly—it was Saladin Al Mektala, the king of Jazratan. A real-life desert sheikh standing on her doorstep. She wondered if there was some sort of protocol for greeting one of the world's wealthiest men, especially when they also happened to be royal. Once upon a time she might have been intimidated by his reputation and his presence—but not anymore. She'd had to do a lot of growing up these past few years and her experiences had made her strong. These days she lived an independent life she was proud of—even if currently it felt as if she was clinging on to that independence by her fingernails.'Didn't anyone ever tell you,' she said, tipping her head to one side, 'that it's polite to wait for someone to answer the first ring, rather than deafening them with a repeated summons?'Saladin raised his eyebrows, unable to hide his surprise at her feisty response. It was an untraditional greeting to receive, even here in England where the demands of protocol were less rigid than in his homeland. But even so. His royal presence was usually enough to guarantee total deference, and although he sometimes complained to his advisors that people were never normal around him, he missed deference when it wasn't there. He narrowed his eyes and studied her. 'Do you know who I am?'She laughed. She actually laughed—her shiny po-nytail swaying from side to side, like the tail of a chestnut horse.'I thought that was the kind of question B-list celebrities asked when they were trying to get into the latest seedy nightclub,' she said.Saladin felt a flicker of annoyance and something else. Something that was a little harder to define. He had been warned that she was difficult. That she could be prickly and stubborn—but these were qualities that were usually melted away by the sheer force of his personality and his position in society. And, not to put too fine a point on it, by his impact on the opposite sex, who usually melted like ice in the desert whenever he was around. His instinct was to bite back a withering response to put her in her place, but Livvy Miller had something he badly wanted so that he was forced to adopt a reasonable tone, something that didn't come easily to him. 'It was a genuine question,' he said. 'I am Saladin Al Mektala.''I know who you are.''And my office have been trying to contact you.' He paused. 'Repeatedly.'She smiled, but Saladin noted that the smile did not reach her eyes.'I know that, too,' she said. 'In fact, they've been bombarding me with emails and phone calls for the past week. I've barely been able to switch on my computer without a new message from palace@jazratan.com pinging into my inbox.''Yet you chose to ignore them?''That is my prerogative, surely?' She leaned on the doorjamb, her unusual eyes shaded by their forest of lashes. 'I gave them the same answer every time. I told them I wasn't interested. If they were unable to accept that, then surely the fault lies with them. My position hasn't changed.'Saladin could barely disguise his growing irritation. 'But you don't know what it is they were asking of you.''Something to do with a horse. And that was enough for me.'She drew herself up to her full height but he still towered over her. He found himself thinking that he could probably lift her up with one hand. When he'd heard about her ability to soothe huge and very temperamental horses, he'd never imagined she could be so…petite.'Because I don't have anything to do with horses anymore,' she finished gravely.Dragging his gaze from her slender frame to eyes that were the colour of honey, he fixed her with a questioning look. 'Why not?'She gave a little clicking sound of irritation, but not before he had seen something dark in her eyes. A flash of something uncomfortable that he stored away for future reference.'That's really none of your business,' she said, tilting her chin in a gesture of defiance. 'I don't have to offer any kind of explanation for my decisions, particularly to people who turn up unannounced on my doorstep at one of the busiest times of the year.'Saladin felt the first flicker of heat. And of challenge. He was not used to resistance, or defiance. In his world, whatever he wanted was his. A click of his fingers or a cool glance was usually enough to guarantee him whatever he desired. Certainly, this kind of opposition was largely unknown to him, and certainly when it came from a woman, because women enjoyed submitting to his will—not opposing it. His response was one of renewed determination, which was quickly followed by the first sweet shimmer of sexual arousal and that surprised him. Because although Olivia Miller was reputed to have a magical touch when it came to horses, she certainly hadn't applied the same fairy dust to her appearance.Saladin's lips curled. She was one of those women who the English called tomboys—and he didn't approve, for weren't women supposed to look like women? Her hair was pale brown, touched by red—a colour named after the great Italian painter Titian and a colour rare enough to be admired—but it was tied back in a functional ponytail, and her freckled face was completely bare of artifice. Why, even her jeans failed to do the only commendable thing that jeans were capable of—they were loose around her bottom instead of clinging to it like syrup. Which made the undeniable stir of lust he was feeling difficult to understand. Because why on earth should he be attracted to someone who sublimated her femininity as much as possible? He narrowed his eyes. 'Are you aware that your attitude could be termed as insolence?' he questioned softly. 'And that it is unwise to answer the king of Jaz-ratan in such a way?'Again, that defiant tilt of the chin. He wondered if she was aware that such a positioning of her face made her look as if she were inviting him to kiss her.'I wasn't intending to be insolent,' she said, although the message in her eyes told him otherwise. 'I was simply stating a fact. What I chose to do with my life has nothing to do with you. I owe you no explanation. I am not one of your royal subjects.''No, you are not, but you might at least grant me the courtesy of hearing what I have to say,' he bit out. 'Or does the word hospitality mean nothing to you? Are you aware that I have travelled many miles in the most inclement weather in order to meet you?'Livvy eyed the remaining bunches of mistletoe still waiting to be hung and thought about all the other things that needed to be done before her guests arrived. She wanted to make more cake to fill the house with sweet smells, and there were fires to make up in all the bedrooms. Her to-do list was as long as her arm and this handsome and vaguely intimidating stranger was hindering her. 'You could have chosen a more convenient time than just before Christmas,' she said.'And when would have been a more convenient time?' he retorted. 'When you have consistently refused to be pinned down?''Most people would have taken the hint and cut their losses.''I am a king. I don't do hints' came his stony response.Livvy hesitated. His behaviour confirmed everything she'd ever heard about him. He had been known for his arrogance on the racing circuit—seemingly with good reason—and she was so tempted to tell him to go. But she was running a business—even if it was currently a struggling business—and if she angered Saladin Al Mektala any more than he was already clearly angered, he might just spread a malicious word or two around the place. She could imagine it would be easy for someone like him to drip a little more poison onto her already damaged reputation. And adverse publicity could be death if you worked in the hospitality industry.Behind him, she could see the falling snow, which had been coming down in bucketloads since before breakfast. Fat flakes were tumbling past like a neverending slide show. Lawns that earlier had been merely spattered with the stuff now sported a thick white mantle—as if someone had been layering on cotton wool while she hadn't been looking. If it carried on like this, the lanes would soon be impassable and she'd never get rid of him. And she wanted to get rid of him. She didn't like him dominating her doorway and exuding all that testosterone and making her think about stuff she hadn't thought about in a long time. She didn't like the way he made her feel.Farther up the drive stood a black four-wheel drive and she wondered if anyone was sitting shivering inside.'What about your bodyguards—are they in the car?' Her gaze swept around the wintry garden. 'Hiding in the bushes, perhaps—or waiting to jump from a tree?''I don't have any bodyguards with me.'So they were all alone.Livvy's anxiety increased. Something about his powerful body and brooding features was making her skin prickle with a weird kind of foreboding—and an even more alarming sense of anticipation. For the first time she found herself wishing that she had a dog who would bark at him, rather than a soppy feline mop called Peppa, who was currently stretched out in front of the fire in the drawing room, purring happily. But she wasn't going to allow this man to intimidate her. And if she wasn't intimidated, then it followed that she shouldn't keep avoiding a meeting with him. Maybe this was the only way he would understand that she meant what she said. If she kept repeating that she wasn't interested in whatever he was offering, then surely he would have no choice other than to believe her. And to leave her alone.'You'd better come in,' she said as an icy gust brought a flurry of snow into the hall. 'I can give you thirty minutes but no longer. I'm expecting guests for Christmas and I have a lot to do before they arrive.'She saw his faintly triumphant smile as he stepped inside and noticed how the elegant proportions of the airy entrance hall seemed to shrink once she had closed the front door on the snowy afternoon. There was something so intensely masculine about him, she thought reluctantly. Something that was both exciting and dangerous—and she forced herself to take a deep breath in an attempt to slow the sudden galloping of her heart. Act as if he's a guest, she told herself. Put on your best, bright smile and switch on your professional hospitality mode.'Why don't you come into the drawing room?' she suggested politely. 'There's a fire there.'He nodded and she saw his narrowed gaze take in the high ceilings and the elaborate wooden staircase as he followed her across the hallway. 'This is a beautiful old house,' he observed, a note of approval deepening his voice.'Thank you,' she said, automatically slipping into her role as guide. 'Parts of it date back to the twelfth century. They certainly don't build them like this anymore—perhaps that's a good thing, considering the amount of maintenance that's needed.' The building's history was one of the reasons why people travelled to this out-of-the-way spot to hire a room. Because the past defined the present and people hungered after the idea of an elegant past. Or at least, they had—until the rise of several nearby boutique hotels had started offering the kind of competition that was seriously affecting her turnover. But Livvy couldn't deny her thrill of pleasure as the sheikh walked into the drawing room, because she was proud of her old family home, despite the fact that it had started to look a little frayed around the edges. The big fire was banked with apple logs, which scented the air, and although the huge Christmas tree was still bare there weren't many rooms that could accommodate a tree of that size. At some point later she would have to drag herself up to the dusty attic and haul down the decorations, which had been in the family since the year dot, and go through the ritual of bringing the tree to life. Soon it would be covered in spangles and fairy lights and topped with the ancient little angel she'd once made with her mother. And for a while, Christmas would work its brief and sometimes unbearable magic of merging past and present. She looked up to find Saladin Al Mektala studying her intently and, once again, a shiver of something inexplicable made her nostalgic sentiments dissolve as she began to study him right back.He wasn't dressed like a sheikh. There were no flowing robes or billowing headdress to indicate his desert king status. The dark cashmere overcoat that he was removing—without having been invited to—was worn over dark trousers and a charcoal sweater that hugged his honed torso. He looked disturbingly modern, she thought—even if the flinty glint of his dark eyes made him seem disturbingly primitive. She watched as he hung the cashmere coat over the back of a chair and saw the gleam of melted snow on his black hair as he stepped a little closer to the fire.'So,' she said. 'You must want something very badly if you're prepared to travel to the wilds of Derbyshire in order to get it.''Oh, but I do,' he said silkily. 'I want you.'Something in his sultry tone kick-started feelings Livvy had repressed for longer than she cared to remember and for a split second, she found herself imagining what it would feel like to be the object of desire to a man like Saladin Al Mektala. Would those flinty eyes soften before he kissed you? Would a woman feel helpless if she was being held in arms as powerful as his?She swallowed, surprised by the unexpected path her thoughts had taken her down because she didn't fall in lust with total strangers. Actually, she didn't fall in lust at all. She quickly justified her wayward fantasy by reminding herself that he was being deliberately provocative and had made that statement in such a way—as if he was seeking to shock her. 'You'll have to be a little more specific than that,' she said crisply. 'What do you want me to do?'His face changed as the provocation left it and she saw a shadow pass over the hawklike features. 'I have a sick horse,' he said, his voice tightening. 'A badly injured stallion. My favourite.'His distress affected her—how could it fail to do so? But Livvy hardened her heart to his problems, because didn't she have enough of her own? 'I'm sorry to hear that,' she said. 'But as a king of considerable wealth, no doubt you have the best veterinary surgeons at your disposal. I'm sure they'll be able to work out some plan of action for your injured horse.''They say not.''Really?' Linking her fingers together, she looked up at him. 'What exactly is the problem?''A suspensory ligament,' he said, 'which has torn away from the bone.'Livvy winced. 'That's bad.''I know it's bad,' he gritted out. 'Why the hell do you think I'm here?'

By Loraine Oliver The Sheikh's Christmas Conquest is the second book in the Bond of Billionaire's series and it was a good read. The main characters in this story are Sheikh Saladin Al Mektala, and Olivia Miller.Olivia Miller is a 29 year old woman who is known as a horse whisperer, the tops in her field, and she loved horses from the time she was put on the back of one at the age of three, and so it was only natural of her to build a career around t until her world came crashing down around her when she was jilted at the altar by a man who, after finding out she did not have a lot of money like he thought she did, walked away without a word, leaving her life in shambles. She nursed her father on his death bed; he was very old and her mother had died when she was younger. His second bride was a gold digger, and a lot younger than him, and when she ran out of money to spend after going through Olivia's father's fortune she divorced him and almost took what was left. After her father passed Olivia still had their family home, which she turned into a bed and breakfast Hotel. She never did go back to riding or working with horses again. The holiday season is here and she is getting the inn ready for group of people coming to spend Christmas at the Inn, and she has worked so hard, as always to make things special. She has been getting her inbox on her computer blown up with emails, and texts on her phone for her assistance to help Sheikh Saladin Al Mektala's sick thoroughbred race horse, and she keeps saying "no", but he keeps sending her messages daily. Two days before Christmas there is a knock on her door and she ignores it as she is not expecting anyone and whoever it is is persistent, they keep knocking! When she opens her door she is stunned to see the Sheikh on her doorstep, looking quite annoyed! She can't believe that this tall, dark, and handsome perfect looking man is standing there. He towers over her, she is not too tall and has a lean body herself and flaming red hair and freckles and she is wearing worn clothes and all she can think is "what is he doing here?" She asks him where his bodyguards are and he tells her he is there alone. After she lets him in and he tells her he needs her help she feels badly but refuses to go to his country, she personally does not feel the confidence she used to have. Then the lights go out and the snow falls so hard they are stuck together!Needless to say this book is quite entertaining and I know you will love it as well as I do. There are certain things that come up in conversation, the sheikh is not used to dealing with someone who actually has the nerve to tell him "no" so to say the least it is amusing. As you read further, it is funny the glimpses the author gives us as to what each of them is thinking and how they are going to get what they want-in his case, her on a plane to his country, and she getting him out of her home, even though she feels attracted to him!I do not want to say anything else except that the plot has a coupe of good twists, the dialog is excellent, there is a lot of sexual angst and desires they both want and a surprise the sheikh gets when he is determined to seduce Olivia! Will they get together? Will Olivia go with him? You have to read and find out! This is the perfect book for an afternoon to sit and read as it is not too short and not too long!I gave this book 4**** stars and look forward to more by this author!

The convergence of these different aspects created an intricate and fulfilling tale. The lives of her characters really filled out this as well. The contrast between their personalities and personal circumstances made getting to know them even more fun. The small moments of role reversal interspersed throughout kept me on my toes and allowed me to get to know them even better. The romance building between them was all the stronger and more compelling because of it.This was a thoroughly enjoyable Christmas read. It was my first novel by this author, but I’ll definitely be looking for more of her work in the future. Please note that I received a complimentary copy of this work in exchange for an honest review.

Toys Meet Snow: Being the Wintertime Adventures of a Curious Stuffed Buffalo, a Sensitive Plush Stingray, and a Book-loving Rubber Ball, by Emily Jenkins

From School Library Journal PreS-Gr 2—Converting their wildly successful "Toys" chapter books (Random) into picture book format, Jenkins and Zelinsky have crafted a story ideal for the younger set, ramping up the adorable factor, while retaining the whimsical spirit of the originals. With their owner, the Little Girl, away for winter vacation, plush animals StingRay and Lumphy the buffalo, along with their pal Plastic the bouncy red ball, suit up (Lumphy sports a mitten on his head, and "dry-clean only" StingRay outfits herself in a plastic bag) and head outside for their very first snow day. Naively knowledgeable StingRay confidently offers her own explanations for the world around them ("'[Snow is] a blanket of peace over the world'"), but Plastic gently corrects her ("'No, it's frozen water…. I read it in a book'"). The three friends take part in their own amusingly endearing versions of typical snow day activities—building a snowman and making snow angels—before watching the sunset and returning inside. By turns witty and tender, the digitally rendered, rich, painterly illustrations vividly conjure up a startlingly stunning winter wonderland, conveying its awe-inspiring beauty from the toy's-eye perspective. Zelinsky affectionately imbues these characters with a warmth that never veers toward the cloying, and his use of light and dark as day slowly turns to evening is masterly. The text is soothingly lyrical in its simplicity; relying on only a few lines of dialogue, Jenkins effectively gives each of the characters their own voice. VERDICT Utterly enchanting; a perfect bedtime read.—Mahnaz Dar, School Library Journal

Great for a snowy day By BrittyMama As the title so nicely states, this book follows the adventures of "A curious stuffed buffalo, a sensitive plush stingray, and a book-loving rubber ball". These three friends each have very different outlooks on life: Lumphy the Buffalo is always wondering about this or that, StingRay always has a very poetic response to Lumphy's questions, and Plastic (the rubber ball) is a bit of a know-it-all and chimes in with her book smarts on the matter. The trio decides to journey out into the snow for the first time and we follow their fresh observations and discoveries. Watching these personalities discover snow for the first time is heartwarming and this book is a wonderful story to read to get little ones excited about snow and winter. There is a bit of freshness, crispness, and innocence to this book- it is beautiful in its simplicity. Personally, I am not a fan of snow but it is hard not to smile as these friends experience the awe and wonder that is one's very first snowstorm.

TOYS MEET SNOW is picture book fans of all ages will enjoy By Mundie Moms & Mundie Kids Book Reviews An adorable story about a trio of toys who adventure outdoors to experience snow for the first time. Lumpy, StingRay, and Plastic belong to a little girl who's gone away on a winter vacation, leaving her toys at home. The toys set off on an adventure of their own for the day. Together they get ready, and head outside to play in the snow. There they discover how snow changes the tree in the yard, what snow really looks like, the fun that is had in the snow like playing a sled, playing on the ice, and building a snowman. As the sun begins to set, they head inside to the warm of their house and await the little girls return.I loved the each of the character provides a different perspective on snow and how it changes the landscape of the yard. Lumpy has many questions about what snow is. His curiosity is one I think many young readers will like, because his questions are very similar to what they would ask. StingRay has answers that I loved, because StingRay's answers were from the heart, and what he thought snow was. Plastic had the more scientific answers to what snow really was. Together, their dialogue is very much age appropriate and one children will understand.TOYS MEET SNOW is a magical story with lovely illustrations, and charming characters. This is a book that has a timeless feel to it, and one we absolutely loved reading. This is a picture book even the youngest of beginning readers will love. The adorable illustrations draw readers in, the characters are ones you wish you had in your playroom, and the dialogue is easy to understand and follow along with. Lumpy, StingRay and Plastic are characters readers, parents and educators are sure to fall in love with, if they haven't already.Whether you're a long time fan of the 'Toys Go Out' chapter books or are new to the characters, TOYS MEET SNOW is picture book fans of all ages will enjoy.

By Sandy Brehl Disclaimer: I am such a fan of the TOYS series that I opened the book knowing I'd love it. Sometimes that happens and I have to admit disappointment, even if slight. In this case, it met and exceeded my expectations.I love these characters, and seeing them in color, in their delightfully determined, cooperative adventure to explore the snow, made a sheer fantasy surprisingly believable. Their distinct personalities radiate across horizontal double-spread illustrations that amplify their points of view regarding the natural/magical world. What a wonderful experience this will be for even the youngest readers, but for anyone who knows (or ever knew) that those toys filling our lives have secret lives as rich as our own. Pair this with the three short chapter books featuring Lumphy, Starfish, and Plastic, as well as Kevin Henkes's recent picture book, WAITING.That's what I call a happy adventure for anyone.

By Bookworm64 Didn't like it as much as the Introduction to the History of the Principal Kingdoms, mostly because of the arguments on religion nearly ruining the overall theme of the book. This was caused by the translator trying to show that religion still had a place in political life (which Pufendorf was against) and the way he turns some of the phrases into muck. The good part is that there are notations to give you a better idea of what Pufendorf was trying to say, the bad was I felt it interrupted the flow of the book. I know that they are reprinting the actual 1691 translation, but when the translator's phrasing actually undermines the argument he it trying to convey, I feel there has to be a better way than a number and small paragraph at the bottom of the page. I did like the subject material, though. It was a very good book for learning about how people should behave in society, ideally, in a legal framework rather than religiously inspired, and an excellent companion to The Law of Nations by Vattel. I just couldn't enjoy it as much as i could have, knowing the translator was thwarting the writer! Hopefully you can, because there is a lot to learn from the pages of this book.

Readers of this book will discover that they now have a far greater awareness about or American heritage; and can enjoy the works of our founding fathers and their introduction of the Law of Nature into our American government. .

Elon Musk, like many who grew up in the wake of the Space Race, was a futurist from the start, dreaming of things like flying cars and spaceships, artificial intelligence and biological engineering. His parents put him in school early because of his thirst for knowledge. The school bullies in South Africa taught him how to press on through hardship. His wealthy and accomplished family gave him the pride of heritage. The writer and philosopher Douglas Adams gave him some idea of fundamental meaning in the universe. His keen mind, hunger for knowledge, and ability to make things happen would guide his journey to come. Later in life he would take these ingredients and become a superstar. After gaining a fortune of his own, he would take the world of technology by storm, as many in Silicon Valley had done before him. With Tesla Motors, he proved that electric cars not only worked, but had the potential to be superior to gasoline vehicles in performance, maintenance, environmentalism, and economics. When his cars became popular and he later released his patents, he not only forced but also enabled other car companies to develop electric vehicles of their own, and inspired at least one other car start-up. With the help of SolarCity and the Tesla Powerwall, he wants to see the power of the sun made more readily available to everyone. His rocket company would prove not only that he could economically build great rockets and spacecraft mostly in-house and offer space-bound customers, including NASA and satellite companies, one of the best deals in the industry, but he would ultimately prove that it is possible to land a rocket. As he moves SpaceX forward, he is doggedly determined to accomplish the absurd notion of building huge rockets that will be used to begin the process of colonizing Mars, within the next few decades. One way or another, it's sure to be a wild ride. It already has been. Join me (and please excuse a little excited hyperbole) in my exploration of the world of Elon Musk.

A huge science nerd; the real-life Tony Stark. (Also, the book works if you're a long-time fan, or if you're just now heard about him.) If there's a tech-loving bone in your body, you'll love this.

You don't have to be a techie to love this story By Amazon Customer Let me first say that I am not a techie at heart, but I love a few techies in my personal life and am willing to read to better understand what makes them tick! So a book about the life of Elon Musk is not the first book I would grab off the shelf. This one grabbed me, however, and was a very enjoyable read! The author presents a thorough picture of the man and the vastness of his vision! There is greatness within each of us, and Jordan did a beautiful job opening my mind to the greatness of Elon Musk. And while I don't find myself dreaming of life on Mars just yet, this book has inspired me to set my own vision of the future a bit higher!

'The Jevons Paradox', which was first expressed in 1865 by William Stanley Jevons in relation to use of coal, states that an increase in efficiency in using a resource leads to increased use of that resource rather than to a reduction. This has subsequently been proved to apply not just to fossil fuels, but other resource use scenarios. For example, doubling the efficiency of food production per hectare over the last 50 years (due to the Green Revolution) did not solve the problem of hunger. The increase in efficiency increased production and worsened hunger because of the resulting increase in population. The implications of this in today's world are substantial. Many scientists and policymakers argue that future technological innovations will reduce consumption of resources; the Jevons Paradox explains why this may be a false hope. This is the first book to provide a historical overview of the Jevons Paradox, provide evidence for its existence and apply it to complex systems. Written and edited by world experts in the fields of economics, ecological economics, technology and the environment, it explains the myth of efficiency and explores its implications for resource usage (particularly oil). It is a must-read for policymakers, natural resource managers, academics and students concerned with the effects of efficiency on resource use.

Review

'Given both the importance of the topic and the analytical and policy vacuum that surrounds it, a book devoted to Jevons Paradox is both timely and welcome ... [it] contain(s) a great deal of valuable material.' - Steve Sorrell, Science Policy Research Unit, University of Sussex

'This extraordinary and timely book focuses on a basic problem involved in achieving major energy conservation. As the authors explain, the Jevons Paradox emphasizes that simply reducing energy use in one system actually often results in increasing energy use in another system. The issue of sustainability cannot be handled just by looking for silver bullets ...' -David Pimentel, Professor Emeritus, Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, Cornell University

'Efficiency first does not give frugality second; it makes frugality less necessary. But if we seek frugality first we get efficiency second as an adaptation to scarcity. Recognizing the Jevons Paradox, this book cogently argues, is the major key to a rational energy policy. Highly recommended!' -Herman E. Daly, Professor at the School Of Public Affairs, University Of Maryland, and former senior economist in the Environment Department of the World Bank

'This book is the most comprehensive attempt at dismantling the efficiency myth: it examines the subject from a variety of practical and theoretical perspectives, and while it may leave an unsuspecting reader rather depressed it leaves all of us better prepared to face the reality.' -Vaclav Smil, FRSC, Distinguished Professor, University Of Manitoba, Canada

'A thoughtful compilation of the best multidisciplinary approaches to modeling energy and resource use, looking at the extent to which energy efficiency leads to increased consumption and if so, how this price-determined effect can be mitigated.'- Hazel Henderson, Ethical Markets

'A remarkable and unsettling critique of energy policy.' - Crosslands Bulletin

'In this thought provoking book , the authors follow the Jevrons Paradox from its originator through time to our current debate on resource use and sustainability.'-Clean Technologies and Environmental Policy

It covers the topic of Jevon's paradox in great detail and maps out the dangers of ignoring it. The book has the ability to redefine your perspective of the role of technological innovation in solving the worlds energy problems alone. My one critique would be to reorder the chapters. Chapter 1 is a hard though worthwhile read and requires perseverance. The introduction and final chapter cover the keys points that are then supported by the other chapters extensive review of the factors that impact in the context of Jevon's paradox.

Excerpt from The Works of Edgar Allan PoeThe word "Verse" is here used not in its strict or primitive sense, but as the term most convenient for expressing generally and without pedantry all that is involved in the consideration of rhythm, rhyme, metre, and versification. There is, perhaps no topic in polite literature which has been more pertinaciously discussed, and there is certainly not one about which so much inaccuracy, confusion, misconception, mis-representation, mystification, and downright ignorance on all sides, can be fairly said to exist. Were the topic really difficult, or did it lie, even, in the cloud-land of metaphysics, where the doubt-vapors may be made to assume any and every shape at the will or at the fancy of the gazer, we should have less reason to wonder at all this contradiction and perplexity; but in fact the subject is exceedingly simple; one tenth of it, possibly, may be called ethical; nine-tenths, however, appertain to the mathematics; and the whole is included within the limits of the com monest common sense.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. About the Author Author, poet, and literary critic, Edgar Allan Poe is credited with pioneering the short story genre, inventing detective fiction, and contributing to the development of science fiction. However, Poe is best known for his works of the macabre, including such infamous titles as The Raven, The Pit and the Pendulum, The Murders in the Rue Morgue, Lenore, and The Fall of the House of Usher. Part of the American Romantic Movement, Poe was one of the first writers to make his living exclusively through his writing, working for literary journals and becoming known as a literary critic. His works have been widely adapted in film. Edgar Allan Poe died of a mysterious illness in 1849 at the age of 40.

He is an absolute master of the short story and the poem. A collection of Poe's writings is a welcome addition to any bookshelf. I would not, however, chose this particular collection.Because all of his works fit handsomely in a single volume, there is no real need to purchase a "selected works" version like this one. There are other "value priced" editions that have everything and you will be better off with one of them. Look for the term "complete works."Poe's writings do not disappoint, but this presentation of his writings does.

This is an excellent book, it has gold leaf paper and its own bookmark and has a GREAT sum of his work although some 'may' be missing but all the great ones are there such as the infamous The Raven and The Masque of Red Death, The Fall of The House of Usher among many others; to keep this short and simple this book is well worth the price and looks better in person then what amazon shows. Do keep in mind like I said this is a very nice book and only buy it if your either an avid Poe fan or want a great book to add to your growing library (like me), otherwise buy a paperback if you want something to tote around with you between classes etc.

By Avid Star Wars Book Fan “Weapon of the Jedi” a fantastic title in the best tradition of Star Wars. It will delight the young readers and make the adults revisit their inner child. Jason Fry understands what makes a SW story work and delivers it with heart and imagination.STORY: It’s a short tale set in one location that feels like an act of a much larger play and yet managed to capture all the core elements of a “hero’s journey.” We find Luke still as a young, naïve rebel pilot learning what it means to be a Jedi. The Force is the central theme of the book and I was delighted with Jason’s treatment of it. Once again the Force is a magical power surrounded with mysticism. Here the Jedi are a legend of old wizards who stood of peace (not generals in the military or a space police force.) Chapter 8 in particular left me with a sense of wonder, bringing back Yoda’s teachings from Ep.V. It is a true return to form and the best part the book. There’s also a colorful cast of supporting characters, a beautifully fleshed out exotic location, and solid action. Nothing here is particularly innovative but, more importantly, the story is expertly told, with vivid prose and a sense of urgency!CHARACTERS: I was instantly sold on Luke’s characterization. Jason Fry effortlessly recreates the Luke we love and remember from the films. Mark Hamill’s mannerism never feels forced. He literally comes alive from the pages and responds to situations the way you would expect him to. Luke’s first steps into learning how to control, or rather submit to the force is also beautifully portrayed! (In “Heir to the Jedi” novel he movies noodles for practice, which I found completely absurd! Here the force is not a trivial “mind trick.” There’s a logical narrative extension of his training from Ep.IV taken to the next step!)The same is true with R2 and Threepio, their back and forth banter is on the money! The new cast is there mainly for support and help add purpose to the plot.ACTION: Without giving anything away I will say the action was quite enjoyable. Parents buying the book for their children shouldn’t worry about the level of violence. The writer avoids brutal vocabulary but gives just enough hints for adult readers to image its full extent. The space battle is vivid and well-choreographed and there is a cool surprise for the ground battle.I’ve read practically all of the existing Star Wars novels and thought I would never read anything as great as Kevin J. Anderson’s and Rebecca Moesta’s famous “Young Jedi Knights” series. I was very pleasantly surprised with this book. Thank you Jason Fry. I’m looking forward to new great SW stories from you in the years to come!

The main story takes place shortly after Episode IV and showcases how Luke began to develop his skills in the force and also how he began to learn to wield a lightsaber. Unlike "Heir to the Jedi" the Luke in this story feels like the Luke we know and love from the original series. He, R2D2, and C-3PO are wonderfully portrayed and the story clips along at a good pace. This book is aimed at middle schoolers, grades 5-9, and I think that fits very well. The dialog and word choice should be challenging but not inscrutable for that age range. And happily, this is also a great story for adult fans as well.

A Terrific Tale Of 'Exploration' Told When Luke Was Still Young And Reckless By Edward L Zimmerman Jason Fry delivers a pretty grand adventure helping to fill in the gaps between the films STAR WARS: A NEW HOPE and STAR WARS: THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK with his new Young Adult novel, Star Wars: The Weapon Of A Jedi. This is a great tale, one which returns Luke to the days when he wasn’t quite sure what becoming a Jedi would mean: he’s only used the Force sparingly, and – now that Ben Kenobi is gone – he’s uncertain of how to continue building his skills on his quest to (ahem) follow in the footsteps of his “once great father.”As such, Fry does a masterful job creating a set of circumstances wherein Skywalker faces perilous circumstances within the context of this ‘new’ tale. (For those unaware, this is one of a series of YA novels done as tie-ins for the upcoming STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS motion picture.) Of course, readers know that Luke isn’t going to die any time soon here, but the story is structured in such a way that it’s clear that greater universe and a few new characters remain under the dire influence of an oppressive Empire. As for the story? The galaxy’s best Starfighter pilot gets shackled with an underperforming Y-Wing in a rather mundane mission to recover some data at the behest of Mon Mothma; yet the chance encounter with Imperial forces lands Luke and his faithful droids C-3PO and R2-D2 down on a jungle planet with some previously unknown connection to the Force. Might this be the very world wherein the Jedi Master might seek refuge in his later days? And what about those Imperials hot on his tail? The Weapon Of The Jedi is a great adventure that might seem a bit quick or contrived to others; and I’d say – were that the case – that those aren’t really fans of a younger, less polished Luke Skywalker. This is the anxious farmboy – the one wishing for an escape only to find what one wishes for may not ultimately be to one’s liking – and he’s now alone on his quest to become a Jedi Knight. He’s questioning his place and his abilities, and if that set of circumstances appeals to you then you’d do well to pick this YA novel up and return to those days. If that era doesn’t interest you, then this one probably won’t mean much.

The #1 New York Times bestseller about the Greatest Generation freshly adapted for the next generation.  For readers of Unbroken, out of the depths of the Great Depression comes the astonishing tale of nine working-class boys from the American West who at the 1936 Olympics showed the world what true grit really meant. With rowers who were the sons of loggers, shipyard workers, and farmers, the University of Washington’s eight-oar crew was never expected to defeat the elite East Coast teams, yet they did, going on to shock the world by challenging the German boat rowing for Adolf Hitler.   At the center of the tale is Joe Rantz, a teenager without family or prospects, whose personal quest captures the spirit of his generation—the generation that would prove in the coming years that the Nazis could not prevail over American determination and optimism.   This deeply emotional yet easily accessible young readers adaptation of the award-winning #1 New York Times bestseller features never-before-seen photographs, highly visual back matter, and an exclusive new introduction.

The Boys in the Boat (Young Readers Adaptation): The True Story of an American Team's Epic Journey to Win Gold at the 1936 Olympics, by Daniel James Brown

From School Library Journal Gr 4–7—This adaptation of the adult title The Boys in the Boat: Nine Americans and Their Epic Quest for Gold at the 1936 Berlin Olympics (Viking, 2013) chronicles the powerful University of Washington crew team that took the gold in Berlin. The book centers on one untrained rower, Joe Rantz, who was working his way through college. The team was guided by the determined UW coach, Al Ulbrickson, whose obstacles to success were the rival rowing team from the University of California, Berkeley, and his own inconsistent rowers. Introductions to figures such as George Pocock, the team's boat builder, are fascinating, and the photos of races and the team help to build an understanding of this unique world. The descriptions of the team's trajectory and their tense races are suspenseful, and readers will be fully invested. Rantz is a relatable underdog. However, the accounts of his struggles and triumphs come at the expense of his teammates, who are relegated to the background, existing only as sketchy, underdeveloped figures. Brown's portrayal of the Olympic games is full of thrilling details, but it's also impersonal, with little insight into the boys' thoughts, and Nazi Germany is mentioned only briefly. A "Who's Who" at the front of the book and a time line and introduction to rowing at the back are helpful and well laid out. VERDICT Those seeking an inspiring true story or a great sports tale will be pleased with this stirring work.—Marian McLeod, Convent of the Sacred Heart, Greenwich, CT

Review Accolades for The Boys in the Boat (Young Readers Adaptation):- New York Times bestseller- #1 Pacific Northwest Bookseller Assocation bestseller"The word teamwork, which can sound humdrum to kids in coaches' droning lectures, doesn't adequately describe the connection shared by the men in that boat in 1936. Illustrated with vintage photos, this moving book offers young people a vivid sense of that shared experience. A Depression-era story with timeless appeal." —Booklist, starred review"Offering a model of masterful nonfiction writing, Brown expertly balances the leisurely pacing of the protagonists' back stories with the exciting race scenes, related with concrete nouns, lively verbs, and short sentences, selected and adapted for this edition by Mone. Many photographs, an easy-to-read timeline, and notes on "The Art of Rowing," complete with a diagram, add visual appeal. A fine companion to Laura Hillenbrand's Unbroken (2014), also about the 1936 Olympics and also adapted for young readers." —Kirkus"Those seeking an inspiring true story or a great sports tale will be pleased with this stirring work." —School Library Journal"It becomes almost impossible not to root for such a hardscrabble collection of underdogs as they exhibit hard work, sacrifice, teamwork, and loyalty at every stage of their collective journey to Berlin." —Horn Book"With a lyrical flair, Brown tells the story of these men in a manner that intersperses the drama of the time period with the emotional and physical turmoil of their lives.  Young adult readers may not understand or even know about the desperation of the Depression, or what it was like at the genesis of Nazi Germany, but the tale of these persistent men, each with their own personal struggle, will entice readers of all ages." —VOYAAccolades for the adult edition of The Boys in the Boat: - #1 New York Times bestseller- 2014 ABA Adult Nonfiction Book of the Year- 2014 Washington State Book Award"A suspenseful tale of triumph." —USA Today"Evocative, cinematic prose." —Publishers Weekly"This is Chariots of Fire with oars." —David Laskin, author of The Children's Blizzard"A great and inspiring true story." —Nathaniel Philbrick, author of Mayflower"A thrilling, heart-thumping tale." —Timothy Egan, author of The Worst Hard Time"A robust, emotional snapshot of an era." —James Bradley, author of Flags of Our Fathers

By jaxon814 My 8-year old son reads a lot of the "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" books and that sort of "book" :/, so it was such a breath of fresh air to introduce him to a book that is SO WELL WRITTEN, and has such a great message of perseverance and overcoming obstacles. The Audience Guide says 4th-7th grade, but I think even younger grades might be ok, especially if parents read it with, or to, their 1st-4th grader, as the subject matter in parts can be a little emotional, and a few concepts would be helpful to pause and talk about. (I wanted to pause and talk about ALL the parts!!) The way the book jumps from Joe's childhood to adulthood every-other chapter might be confusing at first if kids aren't familiar with that literary device. One thing that would have helped this confusion is if the book designer/publisher made the little icon of the rowers under the chapter # (which is ALWAYS the same) different for the chapters that have to do with his youth. For example, only use that crew/boat icon on the chapters about the UW team, but for the other chapters use a different icon/illustration that has to do with his childhood to help guide the reader when there's a time switch.I have not read the original version, but plan to because this was such a compelling and captivating story. I hope they make a movie out of it, too.

An easier read for the younger set; however, all of the important messages are still included. It relays the hopes and dreams of those who came from a somewhat common upbringing to the World Stage of sports.

For the description of Nazi Germany alone one should read this book. The description of the Olympic Race is just like one was there. The characters are so well drawn you learn to hate and love them --depending on who they are. I cannot laud this book enough
