Excerpt from How to See a PlayThis book is aimed squarely at the theater-goer. It hopes to offer a concise general treatment upon the use of the theater, so that the person in the seat may get the most for his money; may choose his entertainment wisely, avoid that which is not worth while, and appreciate the values artistic and intellectual of what he is seeing and hearing. This purpose should be borne in mind, in reading the book, for while I trust the critic and the playwright may find the discussion not without interest and sane in principle, the desire is primarily to put into the hands of the many who attend the playhouse a manual that will prove helpful and, so far as it goes, be an influence toward creating in this country that body of alert theater auditors without which good drama will not flourish.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. You're Here for a Reason, by Nancy Tillman

From School Library Journal PreS-Gr 2—Tillman's latest examines the struggle humans have with the idea of "purpose." She speaks as though addressing a child, repeating the refrain "you're here for a reason" and explaining that good things happen to others because of the child. Her answer to this life question may be unsatisfactory or too simplistic for some. Nevertheless, she fashions it into an encouraging sentiment that gives peace of mind. To evoke this sense, Tillman illustrates children mingling with animals in a vibrantly colored, dreamlike realm. As usual, her characteristic, almost photographic, digital and mixed-media paintings complement the soothing cadence of the text and beautiful rhyme. Goodwill spreads from page to page in the shape of a kite and a ball, showing how actions affect the world. Tillman frames her lovely poem with the idea of a puzzle, starting the verse that reads, "If not for your hands and your eyes and your feet,/the world, like a puzzle, would be incomplete" and ending with an image of a globe made up of puzzle pieces, depicting the paintings in the book.. It may not be obvious, but every person is a piece required to form the whole. VERDICT Fans of Tillman's previous titles will want to get this one as well; another ideal bedtime story for children and guardians to share.—Rachel Forbes, Oakville Public Library, Ontario, Canada

About the Author

He is only one so it is a little advanced for him, but I like reading to my children and figure that even if they don't understand everything right now, the words will make their mark. This is the sort of book that I want to have an impact on them. The message is stronger than most realize. The kids are in bed right now and their dad is working tonight. I am alone in the house and a dark wave of depression has settled in to keep me company. It is something that I have dealt with most of my life. My birthday is tomorrow. I turn 35 and feel worthless. I am disappointed with where I am at and feel of no value to the world. I know I am of value to my children and my animals and I treasure them more than words can convey, but beyond that, I feel like wasted space. This is an emotion that has always plagued me, even when logically, I realize I have done some very good things. It is the depression and it wraps its deceptive arms around me in my times of sorrow to comfort me with my own despair. So while I am alone, I decided to clean up and put away my son's gifts. I picked up this book from the pile and decided to sit down and read it. I wasn't prepared to feel the words the way that I did. It feels silly to say that a book meant for children also feels meant for people with depression, but it does. There is little comfort for the constant sadness that stirs within me at times like this, yet somehow this book provided it. It is really very simple text with nothing that I haven't already heard before. Maybe it was the timing. Still, the reminder that even though everything seems stagnant right now, the good that I have done is likely still resonating out there, meant something to me. The things that I have done have mattered and are still mattering and will continue to matter. In some way, I must matter too. I really needed that tonight."You're here for a reason. It's totally true. You're part of a world thatis counting on you.So don't be too worriedif some days fall flat.Good things can happen, even from that."I will read this book to my children often and strive to fill them with a sense of love and value. As I read it to them, I will also be reading it to myself as a reminder. In addition to recommending it for kids, I would also recommend it as a gift for those with depression when you want to do something for them, but just don't know what. The simple act of gifting them this book might provide a sense of comfort that they won't accept as words or a hug.Well done, Nancy Tillman.

It addresses the bad days and how they shouldn't drag you down. It is optimistic and the illustrations parallel the theme through a lost kite and ball that end up being repurposed and appreciated by many others. These represent the setbacks in life that may have a silver lining. Kindness really can have a ripple effect- even if those ripples are not always seen by the initiator.Though at first I was thinking it would be perfect for a baby shower or new parent, I think this book would actually be perfect as a "thinking of you" gift for a friend or family member who is going through a really rough time. Both children and adults will be able to get something out of the story.

Incredibly inspiring for both children and adults, and the pictures are gorgeous (as is the norm with Nancy Tillman's books). The message - that everyone is important and is on this earth for a reason - is so beautiful that it's hard not to cry reading it (making for some awkward readings with my toddler). Nancy Tillman's books are all wonderful, but this one takes the cake for us. Highly, highly recommend.

This year’s Cowboy Christmas in Las Vegas promises to be merry and bright. But the real magic is happening outside the rodeo. Dusty Waite comes from a family of world championship bronc riders. His father and older brother have been there, done that, and their gold buckles taunt Dusty at every family gathering. Now he’s the top pick for the win. If luck and skill aren’t on his side, he’ll be a family joke—plus he’ll lose his endorser, Rawhide foods. Losing the money would hurt, but no way will he walk away from the saucy little cowgirl running things. Avalee Byrd is the marketing mastermind behind Rawhide. The next world championship bronc rider is going to be the face pimping high-energy drinks and power bars made specifically for hardworking cowboys. Trouble is, he’s more than a little distracted—by her. And she’s having a difficult time keeping herself from landing on Planet Ripped-Abs too. While Avalee struggles to keep from mixing business with pleasure, Dusty is one determined cowboy. He wants the win, the job and the girl. But luck may not be on his side.

This is my first ever book by Em!It’s Christmas in Las Vegas and is time for the National Finals Rodeo or NFR. Avalee Byrd has taken over most of the company duties for Rawhide Foods, a company that makes bottled drinks and snack bars for cowboys. Her marketing has doubled the profits but now that she has the sexy Dusty Waite, a bronco riding cowboy, signed on as spokesperson, she’s sure to do even better. Avalee has her booth all set up at the rodeo and is anxiously awaiting the arrival of the famous cowboy to do some promo work. But when he arrives, Rawhide foods is about the last thing on her mind.Dusty Waite’s father and brother have won championships. Now it’s up to him to keep up the family tradition. As soon as he arrives at the Rawhide Foods booth for his photo shoot, all he can think about is getting Avalee out of that booth and also out of her clothes. At first Avalee resists Dusty but he is very persuasive and persistent. It doesn’t take long for Dusty to achieve his goals. But this was a mistake wasn’t it? Avalee’s father would have a fit. You don’t mix business with pleasure. Plus, it is in Dusty’s contract that he must score in the top three. If he doesn’t, his contract with Rawhide Foods is void.Dusty’s feelings for Avalee quickly grow from lust to something more. But is Avalee a distraction or is she good luck?I have such a huge weakness for sexy cowboys and I also love Christmas books so this was a complete win, win for me. I loved these two. Dusty most definitely has a one track mind and Avalee was just so cute. I loved them together. But, the life of a cowboy and Avalee’s life on the road for her company are both very difficult to maintain any sort of romantic relationships. Is this just a fling or could it be more?As I said above, this was my very first Em Petrova book and I loved it. I most definitely will look for more in the future. I just can’t resist a sexy cowboy!

Dusty wants the buckle so he can add it to the display with his father & brother's. Avalee is his sponsor trying hard not to fall for Dusty and failing. He needs to fall in the top 3 to keep RAWHIDE's sponsorship but Avalee suddenly becomes more important to him. She on the other hand is trying to keep her business & pleasure separated but Dusty is not going to give up. Wait until you read what happens. Excellent story by Em Petrova.

She does not want to mix business and pleasure, but the sexual chemistry between her and Dusty is through the roof. What is he willing to do to have her? Nobel Laureate Steven Weinberg combines his exceptional physical insight with his gift for clear exposition to provide a concise introduction to modern quantum mechanics. Ideally suited to a one-year graduate course, this textbook is also a useful reference for researchers. Readers are introduced to the subject through a review of the history of quantum mechanics and an account of classic solutions of the Schrödinger equation, before quantum mechanics is developed in a modern Hilbert space approach. The textbook covers many topics not often found in other books on the subject, including alternatives to the Copenhagen interpretation, Bloch waves and band structure, the Wigner-Eckart theorem, magic numbers, isospin symmetry, the Dirac theory of constrained canonical systems, general scattering theory, the optical theorem, the 'in-in' formalism, the Berry phase, Landau levels, entanglement and quantum computing. Problems are included at the ends of chapters, with solutions available for instructors at www.cambridge.org/9781107028722.

Lectures on Quantum Mechanics, by Steven Weinberg

Review Review of previous edition: "Lectures on Quantum Mechanics must be considered among the very best books on the subject for those who have had a good undergraduate introduction. The integration of clearly explained formalism with cogent physical examples is masterful, and the depth of knowledge and insight that Weinberg shares with readers is compelling." Mark Srednicki, Physics TodayReview of previous edition: "Steven Weinberg, a Nobel Laureate in Physics, has written an exceptionally clear and coherent graduate-level textbook on modern quantum mechanics. This book presents the physical and mathematical formulations of the theory in a concise and rigorous manner. The equations are all explained step-by-step, and every term is defined. He presents a fresh, integrated approach to teaching this subject with an emphasis on symmetry principles. Weinberg demonstrates his finesse as an excellent teacher and author." Barry R. Masters, Optics and Photonics NewsReview of previous edition: "Perhaps what distinguishes this book from the competition is its logical coherence and depth, and the care with which it has been crafted. Hardly a word is misplaced and Weinberg's deep understanding of the subject matter means that he leaves no stone unturned: we are asked to accept very little on faith ... it is for the reader to follow Weinberg in discovering the joys of quantum mechanics through a deeper level of understanding: I loved it!" Jeff Forshaw, CERN CourierReview of previous edition: "An instant classic ... clear, beautifully structured and replete with insights. This confirms [Weinberg's] reputation as not only one of the greatest theoreticians of the past fifty years, but also one of the most lucid expositors. Pure joy." The Times Higher Education Supplement

About the Author Steven Weinberg is a member of the Physics and Astronomy Departments at the University of Texas, Austin. I purchased the second edition for the following reasons:Several new sections (rigid rotator, Van der Walls forces, Rabbi Oscillators, Open systems etc.) expanding the book by about 15%.First edition had many errors and these have now been corrected.Excuse to reread a wonderful book.My name is mentioned in the new preface.I would give give the book 6 stars (out of 5) for content - Weinberg is the best at covering material that other books miss (quantization of constrained systems, and detailed coverage of scattering theory for example), explains difficult material without handwaving arguments, and explicitly shows the calculations. I give the book 4 stars out of five for appearance (notation and look/feel of equations) - the only negative for the book is idiosyncratic notation (refusal to use the Dirac notation), which requires me to mentally convert scalar products to Dirac Brackets. Also, I am not too thrilled with the fonts/typeface that Weinberg uses in his books. This is definitely an advanced book on quantum mechanics. It is graduate level, doesn't have any pictures or diagrams, and would not be a good choice to learn quantum mechanics for the first time. It is also clearly as titled a lecture book, and not a reference book on QM (for that I would suggest Cohen-Tannoudji). But if you want to review/extend your knowledge of non-relativistic quantum mechanics, whether in a graduate course or by self-study, this is the book I would recommend. Another excellent book which also meets these requirements (and slightly different content coverage) and which also just came out with a second edition is Ballentine's Quantum Mechanics A Modern Development.

Tick tock… Mary Cross has been forced to accept the world of the supernatural because of an experience that left her with the ability to hear—but not see—the supernatural. She survived three weeks of being kidnapped and tortured, and it has left her emotionally and physically scarred. Across the street from her house, strange things are happening… Mysterious noises haunt the residents, faucets turn on by themselves, and footsteps can be heard running up and down the stairs. It all centers around Noah, a two year old child. Babysitters have run screaming from the house. Caleb Malone has been dumped into a teeming hornet’s nest… He’s always been the good son, done everything asked of him, and even gave up graduate school to join the family business of hunting supernatural villains. He’s convinced himself he’s happy, that his duty to his gift should come before anything else. Until he meets Mary Cross. She gives him hope that things can be different, that he can be different. Together, the two of them must solve the mystery of the two shadows stalking the child and save him from whatever has attached itself to him. This one (3.5) was like half a story and the first half of this book was a rehash of the ending of the 3rd full book and then ..... it just stopped, like you knew that the book needs to continue but there was nothing there. So does this mean the net book is going to be 3.7... Very disappointed in this book.

An Intriguing Paranormal Mystery By Believer "Ghost Files 3.5" is a chilling blend of the paranormal and mystery that begins with the adopted son of the Cross's neighbours, the Flynns being haunted by dual shadows. When Mary's asked to babysit because strange occurrences have freaked out other babysitters she agrees and enlists the help of ghost hunter Caleb Malone to ferret out an answer to the puzzle.Cleverly Apryl Baker couples pieces of Mattie Hathaway's investigation of the eight murdered girls and Dan's near death experience from "Ghost Files 3" with the supernatural stalking of two year old Noah. The plot progresses smoothly and quickly, heating up when Mary Cross while babysitting the child is confronted with mysterious footsteps, flowing taps and ghostly shadows in the nursery.Amid all the strange and terrifying happenings Mary Cross's healing continues from the emotional and physically scarring she experienced when kidnapped and tortured. Insecure about her appearance and able to hear ghosts she's drawn to Caleb Malone a ghost hunter who gave up his dream to do his duty, joining the family business. Arrogant and responsible , putting others needs before his own he's drawn to the sunny disposition and independence of Mary seeing hope and promise in her struggle to face her demons and overcome her fears to save the child. The two characters like the plot are riveting in all their complexity as they stoically face every challenge and find love in the process.I thoroughly enjoyed this fascinating novella and will look for more novels by this talented author.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. I loved these characters when they were introduced in the series ... By Kindle Customer The Ghost Files 3.5 is as well written as the previous novels in the series. Apryl Baker takes us into the world of The Ghost Files through Caleb and Mary’s point of view and shows us that there is more to these side characters that meets the eye, giving us a look into their budding romance and Mary’s ghost abilities. The novella takes place part way through The Ghost Files 3 showing the events of the novel through Caleb and Mary’s point of view and shows us what is going on with their lives besides the events of Mattie’s, giving us a sneak preview at some serious business going to go down with Mary. I loved these characters when they were introduced in the series and wanted more from them and that is exactly what Apryl Baker delivered. When I got the ARC it was exactly what I expect from Apryl, thrilling and fast paced. It left me feeling satisfied but also pining for more. Once again, Apryl Baker has delivered a masterpiece that lures you in from page one and keeps you reading well into the night. Apryl Baker is a genius and that is exactly why she is my favourite author. Keep up the amazing work.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. I shouldn't even like this book, but I LOVE it! By Just Me I don't much like cities, and I really dislike Vegas. I don't like conspicuous consumption, gambling, crazy busy cities, etc. As the main character, Tisiphone, says, "I would rather dig out my own eyeballs and feed them to a raccoon through a straw than go to Las Vegas." I can deal with death, but the idea of torture really makes me squirm. So why did I even think about getting this book, which has both Vegas and torture? Because I discovered Barbra Annino's writing last year and she hasn't let me down yet. She is a skilled plotmaster (yes, I'm making this word up to describe what she does). So, Sin City Goddess is set in Vegas and there is torture in it. Why am I ok with that in this book, to the ;point where I thoroughly enjoyed the book? Well, first, these were both important to the philosophical and psychological aspects of the book (something that Annino does a great job of bringing to her books). Second, the torture was presented, so that you knew it was happening, and very much felt it's effects on the characters, but it wasn't presented as gratuitous violence. But, there is much more to the book than that.As I said, Annino brings a wonderful feminine (that is, female, not "weak"), philosophical / psychological aspect to her writings, even though her series are quite different from each other in other ways. Here's a taste from this book, "It was Athena who had shown me the power of mercy, forgiveness, and meditation. She had taught me how to gain peace and strength from the natural surroundings that appealed to me, like the water and the moon. In other words, it was Athena who had taught me how to subdue my fury. Her gray eyes gazed into mine as I took a few deep breaths, imagining all the noisy electronics fading away, gently lapping waves taking their place." Tisiphone uses this to center herself as she works to fight evil. Real evil. I won't spoil the plot by revealing more here. The plot is captivating and unpredictable. If the quality of the writing wasn't enough to keep me reading (WHICH IT IS!), curiosity about what happens next would.Annino wraps the book up with a note telling us about writing the book and offers, "Whatever the reason, I hope this book encourages you to take back your power, no matter what you've battled." This book does have much to offer along this line. Eagerly awaiting the next book in the series and very curious as to whether I will be meeting a new main character or following Tisiphone to New Orleans!

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Love it! By Amazon Customer This book is so Barbra Annino. Don't get me wrong, I'm a fan/ junkie of all her writing, but this one has a certain sizzle that only Vegas & the underworld can bring. It pulls you in immediately & keeps you reading until the last page, where, inevitably, you will hope she turns it into a series. I'd like to say this will keep you captivated for days, but it won't last for days because you'll probably want to read the whole book in one sitting. Grab it & enjoy ☺

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Another hit! Love it! By Tammy Mac Read the book cover to cover in a few hours. Then went back & read it again! Great read - Love Barbra Annino!!! Read this book - read ALL her books - you won't be sorry!

Although the story was fairly short, there was decent plot development prior to the intimate scenes. Sweet coming of age story that is somewhat reminiscent of Grease in good girl falls for bad guy. I felt some parts were pretty predictable but such is the nature of many of these types of books. But I was glad the writing was more sophisticated than many adult novellas.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Great badboy story! By Amber I really enjoyed this story. I love stories of girls falling for bad boys for some reason. But this book has many twist keeping Leslie from Bobby. Oh and not to mention the secret that is exposed at the end. It was a great way to end this story and get me wanting to read the second book to see what happens between these two characters. Definitely a great story.

The Blackthorn Key, by Kevin Sands

From School Library Journal Gr 4–6—An auspicious debut middle grade novel. Set in the 1600s, the story revolves around Christopher Rowe, the apprentice to a Master Apothecary. After losing his master, Christopher begins to unravel a series of complex codes that his master had, unbeknownst to Chris, been preparing him to solve all along. The more that the protagonist uncovers, the more he finds himself in danger, along with his loyal-to-a-fault best friend. The story is well paced, managing not only to keep readers hooked but also second guessing everything they think they know. Sands integrates a series of fun and interesting riddles and codes with chemistry concepts—no easy feat. The ending is dynamic and rewarding, with just the right blend of the fantastical and realistic. One of the true triumphs is the author's ability to create a character who feels accurate for the time period, while also displaying a modern sensibility that will keep readers engaged. The action does get intense but would still be appropriate for upper elementary school students. VERDICT This is an excellent story for readers who enjoy puzzles, action, and fantasy; keep an eye out for future installments.—Chad Lane, Easton Elementary, Wye Mills, MD

Review "Captivating! A masterful page-turner brimming with secrets, traps, friendship, intrigue, pigeons, potions, loyalty, and explosions. It’s a story that should have broad appeal, while especially intriguing readers with an existing interest in chemistry, history, and decoding puzzles." Engaging and Imaginative - For All Ages By Talvi The Blackthorn Key is an engaging middle grade historical/mystery that reads very much like a 12-year-old-friendly version of an Umberto Eco book. Set during the English Restoration (17th century, when Charles II was restored to the throne after Olive Cromwell's puritan revolution/civil war) the book has wonderful historical perspectives on the times that aren't overbearing or obtrusive to the story. But at heart, this is a book about a boy's adventures in London trying to solve the mystery of his apothecary master's mysterious nightly excursions.Story: Christopher Rowe was saved from the orphanage when a apothecary guildmember noted his mixing skills. Apprenticed to Master Blackthorn, a gentle and kind person boss, Christopher is learning valuable skills that will elevate him above his humble beginnings. But when fellow apothecary guild members begin turning up dead, and with a rumor of a mysterious "cult of the Archangel" behind the killings, Christopher and friend Tom will have to use all their courage and mettle to survive. The Blackthorn Key makes great use of astronomy, botany and especially chemistry to solve puzzles that will lead to the source of the murders. Christopher is intent on saving his master, Blackthorn, from the deadly cult - one intent on discovering an alchemical reaction that could change the course of British (and perhaps the world) history. There are several surprises along the way and certainly Christopher and Tom have great adventures that middle graders will love. But this is also a book that adults can appreciate - from the historical details/milieu, a touch of supernatural mystery, to some great twists and turns. The characters are true to the era as well as their ages. Combined with a very easy and fast read, this is a book that achieves much and rewards on several levels. Certainly, as an adult I enjoyed reading this and then passing it to my 12 year old. It led to some interesting discussions about the English Civil War and the Restoration period.Recommended for all ages. Reviewed from an advance reader copy provided by the publisher.

Christopher Rowe, apprentice to apothecary Benedict Blackwell, isn’t too worried…until his master sends him on a wild goose chase errand, and he returns to learn that Blackwell has become the latest victim. Overwhelmed by grief, Christopher discovers an encoded message in the apothecary’s ledger and sets out to decipher it. When he realizes Blackwell has named his killer in the message, Christopher knows he is in great peril. Slowly, he uncovers the dangerous secrets of the Cult of the Archangel, and learns of his master’s involvement in activities designed to unleash the power of God himself. Ultimately, Christopher must make certain that these powers don’t fall into the hands of the evil men who are seeking them…and rapidly closing in on Christopher. Grades 5-8.Pros: Set in 17th-century London, this murder mystery/historical fiction thriller is a DaVinci Code for kids. It took me awhile to dig into a book about an apothecary from the 1600’s, but Christopher is given a humorous, modern voice, without taking away from the historical authenticity. With an escaped evildoer, uncertainty about Christopher’s next master, and the plague pushing against London’s borders, a sequel is surely part of the plan.Cons: The final showdown gets pretty gory. Someone loses half his fingers, a couple eyes are put out, and two characters will move into the next installment with a good portion of their faces gone.

By Nancy Williams This book was pitched at middle grade so immediately one's point of reference is the Harry Potter series. Of course, comparing anything to that is somewhat unfair, but I have to say that this book was really good. The story is about Christopher who has been plucked from the orphanage to become apprentice to the apothecary, Benedict Blackthorn. It is the seventeenth century, Charles II had returned to the throne after the period of the Interregnum, but there are still puritans in London and splinter groups who seem to be pursuing their own, nefarious goals. When a number of apothecaries are brutally murdered, Christopher finds himself on the run with nothing but the riddles and codes left him by his master to try to determine who is behind the killings and put a stop to it.Christopher is a delightful main character. Unlike so many teenage protagonists in books nowadays, he's thoughtful, caring, loyal and intelligent. I warmed to him immediately. For the age level this book is pitched at, I thought he was perfect. He still had a sense of mischief and got up to various tricks, which you would expect from a 14 year old boy, but overall his personality was delightful. His resourcefulness in terms of what he has learned during his apprenticeship is what carries him through and it makes for both interesting and fun reading. The author did a great job of painting a picture of historical London, albeit fictional. I particularly enjoyed the description of smells and sounds which differ so much from what we know today. I also liked the historical accuracy in terms of the ingredients used - in particular, the blithe handling of mercury was absolutely accurate. Although we know it is poisonous today, in the seventeenth century no-one would have through twice about tipping it into a cup and putting one's finger in it. All of this combined with a fast paced plot, plenty of explosions and a pretty clever main character meant that The Blackthorn Key was the kind of book I'd happily have on the shelves for when my children are old enough to appreciate it.

Dragon V2 is a futuristic vehicle that not only provides a means for NASA to transport its astronauts to the orbiting outpost but also advances SpaceX’s core objective of reusability. A direct descendant of Dragon, Dragon V2 can be retrieved, refurbished and re-launched. It is a spacecraft with the potential to completely revolutionize the economics of an industry where equipment costing hundreds of millions of dollars is routinely discarded after a single use. It was presented by SpaceX CEO Elon Musk in May 2014 as the spaceship that will carry NASA astronauts to the International Space Station as soon as 2016.

SpaceX’s Dragon – America’s Next Generation Spacecraft describes the extraordinary feats of engineering and human achievement that have placed this revolutionary spacecraft at the forefront of the launch industry and positioned it as the precursor for ultimately transporting humans to Mars. It describes the design and development of Dragon, provides mission highlights of the first six Commercial Resupply Missions, and explains how Musk hopes to eventually colonize Mars.

Another great read from commercial spaceflight's pre-eminent author By BeyondHuman Once again, Erik Seedhouse has filled a gap in the books written on commercial spaceflight and written a detailed and engaging account of SpaceX's crew vehicle, the V2. This book includes a detailed account of the evolution of the design and development of the Dragon and also how the crewed vehicle will be used to ferry astronauts to the International Space Station and beyond. A great read and thoroughly recommended.
