Originally proposed in 1899 by German physicist Max Planck, these units are also known as natural units because the origin of their definition comes only from properties of the fundamental physical theories and not from interchangeable experimental parameters. Planck units are only one system of several systems of natural units, but these units are not based on properties of any prototype object or particle (that would be arbitrarily chosen), but rather on only the properties of free space. This book is a discussion and overview of the fundamental units of our Universe.

Contemporary units of measurement By Robert Schlenker This compilation of materials from Wikipedia and Wikimedia focuses on "units of measurement," a topic that is central to the communication of scientific and engineering results. There is no other thread that unites the various articles here although editor Kisak has placed the articles in an order that seems logical to him. Regarding the idea of units alone, this book contains more information than any student of science will ever need in order to understand the unit systems that he or she encounters. But for those who ever wondered about the meaning of c = 1, h bar = 1, and length, G or something else being equal to 1, the first article in this book makes it clear in a jiffy. Other articles address concepts encountered in the first article and therefore provide beneficial additional explanations that will surely illuminate the meaning of the underlying ideas. People confused about units might naturally turn to the internet and google relevant terminology. People with this book on their shelves may find in it all the information they need. This will save the frustration of a search. On the other hand, googling "natural units" or "Planck units" or some other relevant terms turns up interesting and valuable articles absent from this compilation. But that is no surprise. No single book is ever adequate to pull together all of the worthwhile material on a subject. For those who want a readily accessible source of information on units as they are used in modern science, especially physics, I can recommend this compilation highly. Those who want an understanding of older systems of units, especially those of classical science and engineering should look elsewhere.
