A Writer With a Vision By Walter Stanley It is not uncommon for science fiction writers to have a vision of what they think society should be like -- Utopia, or Ultima Thule as Mack Reynolds called it in another of his works. Generally, this involves self-righteous preachiness, one-dimensional characters and contrived situations that are neither convincing nor much fun to read. Ayn Rand, Ron L. Hubbard, and the later works of Robert A. Heinlein come to mind. No doubt, whether or not one finds them entertaining is largely dependent upon whether one is in sympathy with the author’s vision. At least one reviewer of Reynolds’ works said that he was put off by Reynolds’ socialist views but perhaps people who agreed with that view would be more likely to appreciate his work. I am not a socialist, though rather anti-corporate. From what I’ve read of Reynolds, this also seems to be true of him. At any rate, whether I agree, or disagree, with an authors’ opinions, I will have no interest in reading him if his stories are poorly written, and I will have interest in reading his works if well-written. Reynolds’ stories are well-written.The world Reynolds creates in FRIGID FRACAS is, naturally, contrived and, hopefully, not very probable, but he makes it believable. Some years ago when reading about such corporate-controlled private armies as Blackwater, I briefly experienced a paranoid fantasy of corporations employing their private armies in internecine warfare. Reynolds apparently had the same fantasy decades ago, before corporations even had private armies. So in this world, corporations and unions settle differences between themselves with gladiatorial combat. FRIGID FRACAS is sequel to MERCENARY, though I read them in reverse order. These tell the story of Joe Mauser, an ambitious man who wants to “be all that he can be.” He was born in the lower social stratum, and the only way to advance in this society is by joining the military or the priesthood. He has no real taste for either, but prefers the military. He falls in love with the daughter of his employer, who, though of the upper class, is a revolutionary. She despises gladiatorial exhibitions, which are put on to keep the masses entertained and therefore more easily controlled, and dreams of bringing about a society in which people like Joe are free to develop their abilities. This is the ideal of democracy, which Reynolds sees as being thwarted by corporatism.

The Soviet vs West competition remains lively, even after a very aggressive disarmament treaty. The US has formalized a social caste system and, cutting across slightly different lines, almost a guild system of different job specialties and subspecialties. And, to keep the masses sedated, there are plenty of mind-numbing drugs and diversions. The biggest, of course, is the "fracas" - basically, all-out war, nominally a trial by combat to settle corporate differences, but also a Roman Circus of televised bloodlust. The protagonist was born near the bottom of the social heap. Realizing that nearly the only way to climb the social ladder is to join the military, he does - and does well at it, and does rise through the social ranks. The whole system still offends him, though. Then he finds a few well-placed individuals who feel the same way, and who are doing something about it.An amusing look book, it captures a kind of improbable idealism with a lot of feel-good potential, but not a lot of street cred. Fair throw-away entertainment, I'm now ready to throw it away.-- wiredweird

If he also gets to be a first class citizen in the new world order after the end of the cold war that is great also. I had no clue Mack Reynolds knew anything about a knife and how to cut anything more than his steak.Only three Bowie Knives were ever built to be thrown. It was not until I had read the book and then did a little searching on the net for me to even realize this. Just think Ya'll they did not even have the net when this book was written or thought of. Who would a thunk it?PS this was long before the GI Joe FunniesGo Joedray
