I am with the author in his view that we should all be equipped with the right knowledge and skills to combat the situations that will arise in the event that the “The Big Day” comes. This book is a light read and I find it really engaging when an author adds a little humor to self-help books, which Tanner did so achieve in this book. The writing is neat though a few typos can be observed. I wish he could have provided though photos for the self-defense examples and for the basic equipment that are being used for the topics he discussed just for the benefit of the readers especially the ones who are not familiar with camping or self-defense techniques, myself included. Almost everything is pretty basic and some you may already have encountered in a magazine, an online article, or with another book but for those whom are just starting to do their preparation may it be for the big day, or just some planned activity with some friends, this book can be of good help.

While I am not a "survivalist", I found the information pertinent to everyday life. I particularly like the examples Tanner North gave of what he would pack for a family of four. Knowing names and brands of items, as well as amounts was very helpful. Not being even a weekend camper, it can get overwhelming trying to figure out what I need, but his book was very specific. There were items Tanner listed that I would not have thought of, but now realize are very necessary. Dealing with the devastating weather lately and loss of power for many days at a time, this book would be helpful for everyone to have. Once the power goes out, everyone is scrambling for supplies. With this book, I know I'll be prepared. It was easy to read, unlike some books that are very overwhelming. This was straight to the point. It is written for the everyday regular person. A very easy and informative read. I gave each of my adult children this book as a reference.

As a journalist living in Kansas, Arlene Rains Graber enjoyed a fast-paced life writing for newspapers and magazines, until the fiction bug knocked at her door. She was an avid reader of fiction, but had never written a word that wasn’t true until a plot formed in her mind. Honored as writer of the year twice for a small newspaper, voted best article of the year, and several first place honors in contests, she decided it couldn’t be too difficult to write fiction. The struggle was more than she imagined, but yearly retreats to Maine offered the perfect environment for her to make the transition. Travel with her as she finds that special Maine sanctuary to write, study, and complete several novels.

Why wait to discover Maine when this is your chance to enjoy the imagery of Steven King's house By Bonnie Eaton By the time I finished reading Arlene Graber's "Lessons from Maine, I was ready to pack my bags and head for the state." Her mesmerizing descriptions and subtle humor pervaded the book. Why wait to discover Maine when this is your chance to enjoy the imagery of Steven King's house, your chance to step into the pages of her book and experience the wonderful food to be found in out of the way places, and interesting tidbits that included how to tell if lobsters are left or right handed. I enjoyed reading about the 4600 sparsely populated islands off the coast of Maine and what causes Thunder Hole, a small inlet leading to a deep cavern, to create thunder. I found the book to be a richly rewarding cyberspace tour of one of our great states. I highly recommend this book.

This book is beautifully written and made me imagine all of the places and discoveries in Maine. It is a book I definitely will take with me when I visit Maine someday. The descriptions of Higgins Beach, Cranberry Island, Cape Elizabeth including the museums visited created such interest and wonderment of this special place. The seafood and dining experiences were delightful including the people met along the way. Shopping for antiques and treasures were a treat to hear about. The reflections, words of wisdom through quotes added a special addition that brought Lessons of Maine into lessons to apply in one’s daily life. Nicely done!

1 Dead in Attic is a collection of stories by Times-Picayune columnist Chris Rose, recounting the first harrowing year and a half of life in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. Celebrated as a local treasure and heaped with national praise, Rose provides a roller-coaster ride of observation, commentary, emotion, tragedy, and even humor―in a way that only he could find in a devastated wasteland.

They are stories of the dead and the living, stories of survivors and believers, stories of hope and despair. And stories about refrigerators.

1 Dead in Attic freeze-frames New Orleans, caught between an old era and a new, during its most desperate time, as it struggles out of the floodwaters and wills itself back to life.

1 Dead in Attic: After Katrina, by Chris Rose

From Publishers Weekly Starred Review. The physical and psychic dislocation wrought by Hurricane Katrina is painstakingly recollected in this brilliant collection of columns by award-winning New Orleans Times-Picayune columnist Rose (who has already hand-sold 60,000 self-published copies). After evacuating his family first to Mississippi and then to his native Maryland, Rose returned almost immediately to chronicle his adopted hometown's journey to "hell and back." Rose deftly sketches portraits of the living, from the cat lady who survives the storm only to die from injuries sustained during a post-hurricane mugging, to the California National Guard troops who gratefully chow down on steaks Rose managed to turn up in an unscathed French Quarter freezer. He's equally adept at evoking the spirit of the dead and missing, summed up by the title, quoting the entirety of an epitaph spray-painted on one home. Although the usual suspects (FEMA and Mayor Ray Nagin, among others) receive their fair share of barbs, Rose's rancor toward the powers that be is surprisingly muted. In contrast, he chronicles his own descent into mental illness (and subsequent recovery) with unsparing detail; though his maniacal dedication to witnessing the innumerable tragedies wrought by "The Thing" took him down a dark, dangerous path ("three friends of mine have, in fact, killed themselves in the past year"), it also produced one of the finest first-person accounts yet in the growing Katrina canon. From Booklist Hurricane Katrina boosted Rose's career and damn near destroyed his life. A columnist for the Times-Picayune, Rose wrote disarmingly direct, funny, and fully loaded essays about the horrific aftermath of the storm, the terror and loss, injustice and irony. An intrepid explorer of the wreckage, Rose chronicles the decimated city's horrible smell, daunting debris, and Twilight Zone atmosphere. Rose jokes about how Survivor should have been set in New Orleans and tells jaw-dropping and heartwarming stories about chance and stoicism, brutality and heroism. Readers love and rely on his column, which earns him a Pulitzer, and when he self-publishes a collection of his essays, it promptly sells 65,000 copies. But as a conduit for all the sorrows of the lost city, Rose experiences a catastrophic inner storm and candidly reports on his plunge into depression. This frank and compelling collection combines Rose's original book with later dispatches from hell covering all of 2006 and adding up to vivid and invaluable testimony to the true repercussions, public and personal, of the devastation of a city. Seaman, Donna

Review "The Crescent City's bard"-- Harry Shearer, The Huffington Post"These are impressionistic cries of pain and mordant humor...they so aptly mirrored the sense of surreal dislocation experienced by New Orleanians that they turned Rose into a voice of the tortured city."-- Ken Ringle, The Washington Post Book World"The most engaging of the Katrina books...packed with more heart, honesty, and wit...Rose was more interested in telling the searing stories of his shattered city than assigning the blame for its demise..."-- Michael Grunwald, The New Republic

58 of 62 people found the following review helpful. Living in hell after Katrina By Rebecca Huston There are times when I sit and wonder, Am I crazy? Am I crazy?, especially when I look at the state of modern America these days. Back in 2005 I watched with the rest of us the terrible storm that swept over New Orleans, and the knowledge that something truly awful was going to happen. With it came the knowledge that there was going to be damn little that any of us could do about it either.People being plucked from rooftops by helicopters. Water up to the roofline. Trees, cars, and everything else -- including the dead -- floating in water that crawled with god only knew what. The real horror came a little later, when it was realized that many did not survive, abandoned in the mad rush to get to safety. That's what shook me up the most; it wasn't the looting or violence, but that we, America, had left the disabled and elderly to die in their homes.Writer Chris Rose, a commentator with the Times-Picayune in New Orleans, has collected his columns from the newspaper into a book that takes a hard look at the Crescent City, and what life was like after Katrina left. He talks about what it's like to come home and find your house gone. Or what it's like to drive along the street and see household contents piled up on the edges. Or that nary a rat was to be seen for weeks after the hurricane. Most chilling for me was the description of bodies, or the messages scrawled on homes mentioning the number of dead that were within. And finally, The Smell that engulfed everything for weeks afterwards, a stench that crawled into everything as trash decomposed. They say that writing can help to heal the effects of trauma. And Rose is clearly using this form of therapy as he observes not only the attempts of himself and his family, and those that chose to return to New Orleans, but also the reactions of the world beyond New Orleans. There are all of those nameless, countless volunteers that came to rescue and help, giving of the very best of themselves. There are the stories of the survivors, and the curious ways that many of them have taken to cope -- Magnet Man has rather unique perspective, and the neighborhood Cat Lady. And in among the good, there is also the bad. A guy who dumped his refrigerator full of rotting food in one of the few clean parks that were cleared after the storm. The shooting and violence that regularly occurred. The endless blame game among the politicians. The incompetence of FEMA and the federal government to actually do something to help these people. As I read, I found myself astonished. By the resilience of those who have gone back, and are determined to see New Orleans come back. Equally so by the callous disregard of the rest of the world to remember that people are still homeless, hungry and in need there. I found myself getting angry, and feeling shame that there wasn't much I could do besides trying to give donations to charity, and regularly sending my good wishes and saying I haven't forgotten you to my friends who have decided to stick it out in New Orleans. Each of the essays in this book are not much more than a few pages long, originally published. Rose doesn't hold anything back; he lets his own despair, anger, and hopelessness show. But there are stories of amazing generosity and care, and that sometimes gets overlooked in among all of the other stories. And finally, there is New Orleans herself, which is facing decades of rebuilding ahead. In the world of instant news, all too often a disaster is covered for a few days or weeks, then brushed to the back of the room as some new horror comes crawling across our television or computer screens. This book was a vivid reminder to me that more often than not, recovery isn't a measure of weeks or months, but sometimes will take years to occur. If you have the mental strength to want to know some of what is happening in the New Orleans of today, read this book.Yes, it will bother you. You'll probably get upset while reading it. You'll probably have to set it aside now and then to catch your breath. But if you want an honest assessment of what Katrina did, this is a good start to understanding the hearts and minds of those who have chosen to stay.Five stars.Recommended.

I was glad to see the Times-Picayune snag some well-deserved Pulitzers, but sad that Nicholas Kristof (however much I like his columns) edged out Rose.In any event, this is a stand-out collection of columns--really, in most cases, very brief essays. When I first read the book, in a small-press edition, it stayed with me for days. No matter what else I was reading or doing, I saw the people Rose writes about, sitting on door stoops, calling him "baby" in grocery stores, struggling to rebuild after the unthinkable, taping up their stinking refrigerators. In his stories about trying to raise children, battling depression, and yes, refrigerators, Rose makes it clear that the hurricane was an event, but Katrina is a condition New Orleans struggles with every day.A year later, this book is now available in a new, expanded edition. One or two essays are a little over-sentimental, but never mind. This is an amazing book. (Read it alongside, or after, "Breach of Faith.") Rose's direct prose and grim, funny, heart-ful imagery make this book essential reading for any caring person, and a must for library collections.

Then I gave it to my husband and my sister and they loved it too. Written by a reporter from the New Orleans Times Picayune newspaper, who was there during those awful early days of the aftermath. I was there 3 months after Katrina and met locals who shared stories similar to his. The book is engrossing and sad but, believe it or not, it's actually funny in some parts. Chris Rose tells his story beautifully. This is a book people from New Orleans will give to their grandchildren to explain what it was really like after Katrina.

He really enjoys this book and is working his way through it with some (minimal) support. When he begins to have an outburst of anger (or tears) we discuss the situation in the context of the book. He is making great progress in learning to use the techniques to cut off or minimize the outburst.I highly recommend this tool, and will be buying additional copies for some of the other teachers to use with their students.

By Bob the Builder's mom My son (almost 8) has low frustration tolerance and poor problem-solving skills (and thinking skills in general) when he is mad. The most useful part of the book for us was the second half with worksheets to help kids come up with solutions to hypothetical problems. The book is not just talking at kids but actually working with them to show them how to handle problems. It also gives many suggestions for alternative, acceptable behavior during frustrating moments -- talking to a friend, drawing a picture of your anger, hitting a pillow, that sort of thing. My son and I have tried lots of alternative strategies, but none seem accessible to him when he's actually mad, so that part wasn't as useful for us but might help some other kids. The book also makes it clear that anger is just another one of our emotions. Everyone gets mad, and it's not bad to get mad. I recently found out that my son thought other people don't get mad like he does. I've seen him reading this book on his own many times, and I think he's fascinated by the fact that it's talking about something that causes him so much trouble and that it's talking about it like it's a normal thing that happens to lots of kids -- which it is!His little brother, who just turned 6, can't read well enough to look at this on his own yet, but he also really liked the book when I read it to him. We couldn't finish it all at once (not because the book is long but because we only had a few minutes to read), and he was really disappointed we couldn't keep going. The example problems are realistic and will hit home with most kids. A great book with practical applications.

I did this with my 7 year old and he wanted to go through it in one night. We have gone through it a second time already and I can see us going through it again. I love that it's let children know that anger is not bad, it's how you deal with it that can be the problem. The workbook allows kids to work though and create some of their own ideas for dealing with anger.

This thing is about as tall as an iPhone 6+ standing up and about as wide as the same phone on it's side. Make absolutely certain you see the product dimensions which I didn't: Product Dimensions: 5.2 x 2 x 6.2 inches. My second gripe is that, while this is marketed as a "phonics box," the books inside are more like for a pre-schooler. A kindergartner or 1st grader would laugh at the simplicity of these "stories" which usually consist of 3-4 words per page. You may look at this like I did and say "8 bucks for this many books? Wow!" But the reality is you're getting glorified Happy Meal toys in a single, tiny cardboard box.

No these books do not have consistent sounds targeted in each book. Don't you think there name of the pony for the short e book should have a short e in it ? Think again! If you want to target phonics, the curious George phonics set much better. This one sucks in every way - not enough of target sounds in book and dumbed down story - sentences. If your child is smart enough to be reading - don't subject themTo these books. Cute pictures for a child under age of 2 but too small and kids that age would destroy cheaply made books in a minute.

We went through another phonics-based program a year ago, but I thought this might encourage her further because she's really in love with My Little Pony.I am extremely disappointed. I opened the very first booklet and it asks the young reader to learn 'sight words.' If I wished for her to just memorize some crap, I would have sent her to public school! The books don't even describe the sounds (ie 'short i').This set of books is mislabeled and misleading.

The Full Moon at the Napping House, by Audrey Wood

From School Library Journal PreS-Gr 1—Readers who have long embraced the silly serenity of The Napping House (HMH, 2009) will love the raucous mood of The Full Moon at the Napping House—where no one in the house is sleeping. One night the full moon pours its light into a restless house; Granny is wide awake, the child is fidgety, the dog is playful, and there's a prowling cat and a worried mouse. Eventually, a chirping cricket comes to the rescue with his soothing song that kicks off the needed calm that helps the inhabitants finally get some rest. Like the original story, this cumulative tale is told through lyrical language and rich vocabulary. The final watercolor illustrations shows a full moon overlooking a peaceful household. VERDICT A wonderful storytime addition, particularly where The Napping House is popular.—Gwen Collier, Buffalo and Erie County Public Library, NY

It was perfect for that. I was anxious to read The Full Moon at the Napping House and have been most pleased with it. I don't have school children anymore to share my favorites with but I do have grand and great grand children to share my favorites. This is another really good sleepy time stories to share with my little folks. I am very happy to award this new Napping book five stars and think it deserves more than five. It is an excellent book with lovely illustrations. I don't think that people will be disappointed with this addition to the Napping collections.

Destined to become a classic By Jessica at Cracking the Cover If you’re a fan of “The Napping House,” “The Full Moon at the Napping House” should definitely be added to your bookshelf. If you’re not a fan, you will be after reading “The Full Moon at the Napping House.” Beautiful paintings and expertly crafted text come together in the perfect package. The words roll off your tongue and the illustrations draw you in. The publisher’s suggested age range is 4-7, but I think you can definitely go younger with this one. My 18-month-old started oohing and awing as soon as it came out of its package. She loved the rhyming text and pointing at the different characters throughout.

Andrew Montford's The Hockey Stick Illusion is one of the best science books in years. It exposes in delicious detail, datum by datum, how a great scientific mistake of immense political weight was perpetrated, defended and camouflaged by a scientific establishment that should now be red with shame. It is a book about principal components, data mining and confidence intervals--subjects that have never before been made thrilling. It is the biography of a graph...Montford's book is written with grace and flair. Like all the best science writers, he knows that the secret is not to leave out the details (because this just results in platitudes and leaps of faith), but rather to make the details delicious, even to the most unmathematical reader. I never thought I would find myself unable to put a book down because--sad, but true--I wanted to know what happened next in an r-squared calculation. This book deserves to win prizes. 279 of 366 people found the following review helpful. hockey story By Amazon Customer This is a superb review of the story of the hockeystick, the temperature reconstruction which was supposed to show that late 20th century temperatures were unprecedented for at least 1,000 years and which was highlighted in the third IPCC report in 2001. What Montford does in this book is take us through Steven McIntyre's attempt to reproduce the original result of Michael Mann and the controversy that followed. His account is very well written and it reads like a detective story. The technical details of the debate are clearly explained even though there is no heavy mathematics or statistics. He tells the story chronologically and gives a good feel of what people on both sides of the debate actually said at the time (and there are plenty of references as well as judicious quotes from all sides). I have been following this debate for the past five years or so. To my mind this gives as clear an account of the debate as we are likely to see. What is now clear is that the Mann conclusions, far from being based on coherent evidence across a geographical widespread range of proxies all showing similar patterns across the Northern hemisphere, were based on a tiny subset of proxies, bristlecone and foxtail pines, from California whose anomalous 20th century growth was almost certainly not caused by high temperature. The apparently broad evidence was an illusion created by an eccentric implementation of a standard statistical technique called principal components analysis. Mann's version of this (which appears to be his own creation) effectively mined his hundred plus proxies for any which had hockeystick shapes and then gave them huge weight in the analysis. What is worrying about all this is not so much the fact that a paper is wrong. It is the failure to admit this when it is perfectly clear that it is wrong. Montford documents the evasions of debate and the consistent misrepresentation of what McIntyre and McKitrick actually said, as well as multiple refusals of access to data and clear descriptions of what had actually been done. By the time of the 2006 Wegman report it was clear that the hockeystick was broken, but it seems too much had been invested in it for people in paleoclimate to admit outright that it was just wrong. Montford tells this story too and documents the shenanigans surrounding the fourth Assessment Report of the IPCC. But rather than me attempting to condense the book into a paragraph I urge people to buy and read this excellent account. Note that it was largely written before the emails from CRU became public, though there is a final chapter dealing quickly with them. What is remarkable is how much of the story was already known to people who had been following the debate, but also the lengths people were prepared to go to try and stifle proper debate. For me the cover-up of the story has been a bigger influence in turning me sceptical than the mere fact of the hockey stick being wrong.

A very erudite, well-read commentator on science and society, Montford demolishes the global warming scam, one lie at a time. This is one of the most important books to read if you are the least bit concerned about maintaining life on this planet. A very brave man, Monford stands agains the plethora of commentators who have been bought by governments and big industry to promote the myth of global warming as a thinly-veiled initiative to generate new income tax streams. This is book that is a MUST-READ.

Best understood if one has a degree in statistics By George MC Clellan Best understood if one has a degree in statistics, but very enlightening at any rate. Montford details the actions and arguments of allplayers, exposing the unethical tactics that the originators of the hockey stick theory used to foist their scam on the public and, most harmfully, presented it to politicians for their misuse. You can read transcripts of some of the email exchanges among the players, further illuminating the development of the con job of the century.Complex story,. Excellent book.

But after meeting the sexy sheriff she finds that there is something to be said about the magic of Christmas.

By KB I love stories about Christmas and bought this book because it sounded pretty good and kept showing up as a recommendation for me based on some of my recent book purchases. I was not disappointed! I had never read anything by Samantha Chase before and I was delighted by this sweet, romantic Christmas tale. At 144 pages, it was a quick read and I loved every minute of it and it has me looking forward to Christmas!Melanie Harper is an author who lives in North Carolina. Her only family is her dad and the two are very close. They have been through a lot together after Melanie's mother left when she was five and her grandmother disowned her father. Melanie and her father are not fans of Christmas because every bad thing that has ever happened to them occurred right before Christmas so they just gave up on trying to celebrate and instead spend the day together. Melanie is also experiencing writer's block because her editor wants her to write a Christmas novel and, since she despises the holiday, she has no idea what to write. After her grandmother dies, her father tells her that she has inherited her grandmother's cabin in Silver Bell Falls, near the Canadian border. The will states that she has to live there for three months before she is allowed to sell it. She has no interest in living up there, even temporarily, but her father convinces her to go up there and use the time to work on her novel, hoping it will inspire her writing. In a rather awkward situation, she meets Josiah Stone, her neighbor and the local sheriff. The two hit it off and even though Melanie explicitly states that she will be moving back to Raleigh after her three months is up, the two become close and develop feelings for one another. Melanie even learns about another side of her grandmother, whose name is Carol by the way, whom everyone loved and comments on how wonderful of a person she was. Josiah introduces her to the town and everywhere she turns, the song "Silver Bells" is playing. Even though she can't stand it, the town starts to grow on her and she loves the people and closeness she finds with everyone, especially Josiah.I loved seeing Melanie's change of heart about Christmas and how she learns to find happiness during the holiday season. This novel was a beautiful and sweet romance and I was able to picture Silver Bell Falls covered in snow and everyone taking part in the festivities. I highly recommend reading this book if you enjoy romances that take place during the Christmas season!

That's a big feat since she hasn't written a book I haven't loved. Like all of her books the characters come to life, and in this one specifically I feel like I know them all. Her writing is witty, and clever and the dialogue flows effortlessly through the entire book. It's definitely a feel good story to be read, whether it's Christmas, or not. You will fall in love with her characters, and find that you can't wait to see how their lives develop in the months ahead. Her characters are forever, and her books are timeless. The Story of Melanie and Josiah is no exception. One can only hope that their story will continue, because I can't wait to see what lies ahead in Silver Bells for both of them.

When you love that author you follow them forever and can't wait for their next release and this is how I feel about Samantha Chase. When someone can write about two people falling in love and you feel like they could be your family, friend or neighbor next door that author then has your heart. Samantha Chase has mine and Christmas in Silver Bell Falls is just another reason why I love her so much. Do you ever want a love story where you feel the people could be the everyday person that you see every day. This is that book. Melanie just doesn't have any Christmas spirit and really never has. Christmas to her has always just been another day/holiday that she has to get through and move on. That is until she is gifted a house in Silver Bell Falls at first she wants no part of it and then she decides maybe she should give it a try and see what it's like just for once do something different. She is in Silver Bell Falls for the Christmas holiday and just happens to run into the town sheriff who by the way just happens to be some sexy eye candy. But Melanie doesn't have any holiday spirit and finds it almost sickening that people in this town are overly into this holiday however when she meets Josiah she could probably melt snow with the heat coming from her heart. She thinks he is just that hot or sexy. But she knows she wants nothing to do with this little town and he is all in love with this town. So can Christmas finally find it's way into Melanie's heart or will she forever hate Christmas? Can the sheriff of the quaint town help Melanie find some Christmas spirit in her non Christmas heart? Well I can't give away the secrets of this book. Melanie may just break the sheriff's heart but I can't tell you that. You see this book is one everyone should read and while your reading you will find out the answers to all these questions and more just like I did. Once again Samantha Chase has given her readers an amazing story and this is also a lovely read for sitting by the fireplace on a cold winter day. So go now and pick up your copy and put it on your reading list on goodreads. This book does not disappoint and I will be reading it again.

When Dr. Cyrus Mills returned home after inheriting his estranged father's veterinary practice, The Bedside Manor for Sick Animals, the last thing he wanted was to stay in Eden Falls, Vermont, a moment longer than absolutely necessary. However, the previously reclusive veterinarian pathologist quickly found that he actually enjoyed treating animals and getting to know the eccentric residents of the tiny provincial town-especially an alluring waitress named Amy. So Cyrus is now determined to make Bedside Manor thrive. Not an easy goal, given that Healthy Paws, the national veterinary chain across town, will stop at nothing to crush its mom-and-pop competitor. And the rival vet practice isn't Cyrus's only competition; a handsome stranger shows up out of nowhere who clearly has a mysterious past with Amy. To top it off, Cyrus finds himself both the guardian of a very unique orphaned dog and smack in the middle of serious small town drama. This charming sequel to The Patron Saint of Lost Dogs is a wild and delightful ride through one jam- packed week, where Cyrus must figure out how to outsmart the evil veterinary conglomerate, win back Amy's heart, solve several tricky veterinary cases, find a home for an orphaned dog, and detangle himself from an absurd case of mistaken identity. No doubt many animal lovers are panting in anticipation of the next Bedside Manor installment."―Kirkus Reviews"This novel is packed with intriguing medical mysteries and a veterinarian hero who understands animals but is clueless about humans. An entertaining read for animal lovers."―W. Heartwarming, unexpected page-turner By *TUDOR^QUEEN* I received this book via NetGalley for my fair and honest review. As a dog lover, I thought this would make for a pleasant read. What I had expected to be a mildly entertaining story evolved into a surprisingly fast page-turner for a number of reasons.Dr. Cyrus Mills returns to his hometown of Eden Falls upon the passing of his father. His father's veterinary clinic Bedside Manor is itself ailing, on the brink of foreclosure. It's hard to flourish against the powerful marketing of the veterinary chain Healthy Paws, its nearest franchise in a neighboring town. Until recently, Cyrus's expertise of dog doctoring was at the other end of the spectrum, working as a pathologist. However, Dr. Cyrus Mills takes up residence at Bedside Manor along with his late father's veterinary partner, Dr. Lewis. The "heartwarming" part comes in with the stories of the locals and their ailing pets. The "interesting" part comes in with the challenging veterinary cases presented to Dr. Mills, and his thought processes in solving their mysterious illnesses. Throughout the book, italicized factoids appear as Dr. Mills' recollections when he is presented with certain types of animals or diseases. The moments he cracked difficult veterinary cases were quite fascinating and even exciting...as I was cheering inside at each resolution. There was also a romantic angle in the book that was wrapped up in a mystery, only to be revealed at the very end.The character of "Stash," a remarkable Australian Labradoodle service dog absolutely steals the show in this book and will leave you amazed at his skills. All in all, this book well exceeded my expectations and earns a well-deserved 5-star review.

I read this completely unaware that it is the second book in a series, and had no problem whatsoever following the storyline or the characters. While there may be even more depth to this book if you've had the (assumed) pleasure of reading the first book in the series, fear not - this book gives more than its fair share of entertainment value. Yet it's not all about entertainment, for it touches on topics many of us have faced, or will face - the loss of a beloved non-human family member, coping with aging family members, ending romances, trying to begin a new romance, loss of a parent(s), and so on. In short it deals with life. And in this case life in a small town, small enough that everyone knows your business, sometimes before you know it yourself.Mr. Trout must have spent time in Vermont or New Hampshire, because he did an excellent job of catching many of the finer nuances that come with small town life in New England. He didn't rely on the stereotypes, though often they are well-steeped in reality, but instead made Eden Falls come to a realistic life; life in a small town that is trapped between what was and the necessary changes of what is if the town wants to survive. Using the various house calls his wonderful lead protagonist makes Mr. Trout gives the reader glimpses into a variety of different situations the town's occupants face, with many being applicable virtually anywhere in this country, while others are distinctly Vermont. (I say this from the lucky position of having been born and raised in this beautiful state, and if it helps explain the state, no matter how offer I've moved away, how far or how beautiful the destination, I always end up back in Vermont.)Cyrus Mills is a joy to learn about, and to learn about his hometown all over again, this time through adult eyes. He is a serious introvert, so in many ways taking over his deceased father's veterinary practice in back country Vermont is torture. He rapidly relearns that privacy is an expectation he'll have to live without. Just as public speaking, be it to one or thirty people, is something he'll have to adjust to. But he also discovers that not everyone is stuck in 'the good old days.' In fact, he has to adjust in both directions, and the surprises are only just beginning. The characters in this book truly are characters, but in the best of ways. They come off the page as real and alive as anyone you know, and run the gamut as far as personalities go. I'm not even going to scratch the surface of this wonderful collection of characters (double entendre totally intended), but rather leave to you the distinct, and in some cases dubious, pleasure of getting to know them all right along with Cyrus. And don't be mistaken, not all of the characters that dominate this book are of the human variety. But then again, that seems only right considering we are talking about a veterinarian. This tale is rich with warmth, rife with complex characters, and resplendent with beauty, both internal and external. The story will suck you right in, making you feel welcome and at home while you learn the various bits and pieces that make up a life. By turns it made me happy, sad, angry, and sympathetic - if a character felt it so did I. Each emotion was authentic and at appropriate junctures of the story. One can only hope that Mr. Trout will decide to return to Eden Falls, VT to keep us current on all things Dr. Cyrus Mills and all things Eden Falls!

Like eating your favorite comfort food By Rituleen This book is extremely cute; the only way I can really describe it is like watching a Hallmark channel movie while feasting on your favorite dessert. And because this works relatively well as a standalone novel, you don’t have to read the first book to understand what’s happening. You can dive right in, and Trout’s comfortable prose and deft hand with backstory keeps you engaged and in the loop. Dog Gone Back Soon is a very quick read, great to relax to. I didn’t come across any majorly troublesome themes—it does fail the Bechdel test, though. There’s not much else to say, honestly—if you want to read something relaxing and engaging, with light romance, lots of animals, and small-town troubles; definitely try this out and see what you think!

Amazon.com Review

One couldn't select a more delightful and exciting premise for a children's book than the tale of a young boy lying awake on Christmas Eve only to have Santa Claus sweep by and take him on a trip with other children to the North Pole. And one couldn't ask for a more talented artist and writer to tell the story than Chris Van Allsburg. Allsburg, a sculptor who entered the genre nonchalantly when he created a children's book as a diversion from his sculpting, won the 1986 Caldecott Medal for this book, one of several award winners he's produced. The Polar Express rings with vitality and wonder.

Amazon Exclusive: A Letter from Chris Van Allsburg

Dear Amazon Readers,

Over the past twenty-five years, many people have shared stories with me about the effect that reading The Polar Express has had on their families and on their celebration of Christmas.

One of the most poignant was told to me five or six years ago at a book signing in the Midwest, on a snowy December evening. As I inscribed a book to a woman in her sixties, she told me that it was the second copy she had owned, and wanted to know if she could she tell me what had happened to the first. "Of course," I answered.

A dozen years earlier the woman, who had no children of her own, befriended a neighbor, a boy of about seven, named Eddie. He would often cross his driveway to visit her.

She had a collection of picture books, which she read to him, but around the holidays, the only story he ever wanted to hear, over and over, was The Polar Express. One year she offered to give him the book, but Eddie declined because he wanted to hear her read it aloud to him, which she continued to do every year until the boy and his family moved away.

Years later the woman learned from a mutual acquaintance that Eddie had grown up and become a soldier. He was stationed in Iraq. Since Christmas was approaching, the woman decided to send him a gift box. She included candy, cookies, socks, and her old copy of The Polar Express. She wasn't sure what a nineteen-year-old battle-weary soldier would do with the book in an army barracks in the Middle East, but she wanted him to have it. A month later, after the holidays had passed, she received a letter from Eddie.

He told her he was very happy to have heard from her and to get the box of gifts. He had opened it in his barracks, just before curfew, with some of his fellow GIs already in their bunks. A soldier in the next bunk spotted the book. He knew it well from his own childhood and asked Eddie to read it. "Out loud?" he asked. "Yeah," his buddy told him.

Eddie, quietly and a little self-consciously, read The Polar Express. When he'd finished and closed the book, a moment of silence passed. Then from behind him a voice called out, "Read it again," and another joined in, "Yeah, read it again," and a third added, "This time, louder." So Eddie did.

He wrote to the woman that he'd stood up and read it to his comrades just the way he remembered she had read it to him.

All aboard,

Chris Van Allsburg
