Fascinating, evidence based, comprehensive and in-depth in info By Tuan I use to be always interested in out of space and space saucers when I was a kid, as well as mystery's and unexplained things. so this book was a nice little revisit to my formative daysI have always been on the fence in regards to the existence of UFO's, but the overwhelming amount of evidence-based contents really got me thinking there could indeed be something out there.I wouldn't say that in a believer just yet, but this book has definitely helped me think there might be something out there! The different accounts, witness of sightings throughout the years was massively intriguing too. Safe to say I'd recommend this book to enthusiasts in this field.

By Kent Anthony Not really a fan of books about UFO's but the articles within will definitely give you chills after reading. I don't think that not all "unidentified" flying objects we see today are military experimental drones or testing. Check out the freaky Paracas Skulls found by the Peruvian archaeologist; the evidence is already so clear and I think that the military is just covering this up to avoid panic. The book contained events/reports of UFO sightings that are not even listed in the internet.

They might be chicks, but they sure aren’t chicken, and they’re on a mission. And on this, their first (mis)adventure “in this delightful spinoff of the J.J. Tully series” (Kirkus Reviews), the Chicken Squad launches a galactic backyard expedition.Meet the Chicken Squad: Dirt, Sugar, Poppy, and Sweetie. These chicks are not your typical barnyard puffs of fluff, and they are not about to spend their days pecking chicken feed and chasing bugs. No sir, they’re too busy solving mysteries and fighting crime. So when Squirrel comes barreling into the chicken coop, the chicks know they’re about to get a case. But with his poor knowledge of shapes (“Big” is not a shape, Squirrel!) and utter fear of whatever it is that’s out there, the panicky Squirrel is NO HELP. Good thing these chicks are professionals. But even professionals get worried. Especially once they see that round, shiny, green, BIG thing in the yard. What if it’s a UFO full of aliens who want chickens as pets, or worse, dinner? It’s up to the Chicken Squad to crack a case that just might be out of this world.

The Chicken Squad: The First Misadventure, by Doreen Cronin

From School Library Journal Gr 1–3—Those cheeky chicks are back—this time in a series all their own. Fresh on the heels of their adventures in The Trouble with Chickens (2011) and The Legend of Diamond Lil (2012, both HarperCollins), Dirt, Sugar, Sweetie, and Poppy must now contend with a cowardly squirrel named Tail and a "big and scary" something that has landed in the backyard. Using deductive reasoning and some strangely creative camouflage, the chickens hatch a plan to investigate the mysterious object. The curmudgeonly ex-police dog, J.J. Tully, lends his deadpan observations to the humorous text, while Cornell's black-and-white illustrations bring Cronin's oddball characters to life with a goofy charm. Kids who enjoyed the first two books in the "J.J. Tully Mysteries" series will be delighted that the four intrepid chicks take center stage in this laugh-out-loud new chapter book series.—Kiera Parrott, School Library Journal

From Booklist When a terrified squirrel barges into a backyard chicken coop looking for help, four tough little chicks patiently draw out his story and try to figure out what frightened the panicky critter. Deducing that a UFO may have landed in the yard, chicks Dirt, Sugar, Poppy, and Sweetie camouflage themselves with grass clippings and pelt the new (vaguely UFO-like) barbecue grill with rocks in a misguided attempt to rescue Moosh, their mom. Retired search-and-rescue dog J. J. Tully charges in to stop the attack and set things straight. If the characters sound familiar, they appeared in the J. J. Tully Mystery series. Now the four little chicks move into the spotlight for the Chicken Squad series. With its shorter text and larger type, the book will suit somewhat younger readers, those just moving up to chapter books. As in the previous series, some chapters are written in third person, while others are narrated by the dog. Cornell’s comical gray-wash illustrations magnify the story’s mild humor. An amusing beginning chapter book. Grades 2-4. --Carolyn Phelan

Review "Cornell’s illustrations give life to the chicks and their individual personalities. Each one pursues his or her own agenda, though they are often united in a common cause. Like four small, fuzzy, yellow Don Quixotes, they see giants in windmills or, in this case, aliens in backyard grills." - New York Times

The chickens now have their own stories, although J.J. is still a integral part - retired, and their protector.Doreen Cronin is very well known for her silly animal stories - many of which I have in my classroom library. In The Chicken Squad, Cronin once again has managed to pack so much within a story. There is humor, a familiar dog, a "big and scary" mystery, very charismatic and personable chicks, and even a little geometry. This book is an excellent beginning chapter book. It is easy to follow. Readers are immediately introduced to the characters and quickly drawn into a humorous mystery. Children will be easily attracted to the ridiculous interactions and situations. the vocabulary is pretty simple, and there is enough repetition that will make it easy for a struggling reader to catch on. The pattern and structure of the text lend itself for a perfect read-aloud book. It would be a story that children would not want to put down, but continue to read or listen to.As a third grade teacher, I see this as a book I want to have in my classroom. I am always looking for good chapter books - especially ones that my lower readers will be able to pick up and read independently. This will be a book that my children will read and eagerly share with others.I see this book later becoming a children's animated cartoon. I think the writing, the characters, as well as the cute illustrations have already allowed me to create an animated cartoon in my mind.

Colebank My daughter loves to read, but finding books with themes that fit her age but with a length that goes beyond what most children her age read at is always a challenge. This book was a perfect fit. She laughed at it and loved it. She hates mysteries (too scary or too confusing--remember, she's six!), but this one with the Scaredy Squirrel was right up her alley.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Dirt discovers a new shade of gray! By Dolores, a teacher The Chicken Squad is hilarious and Doreen Cronin, perhaps my favorite author for this age group, is a genius.J.J. Tully makes and appearance, but this adventure is a job for the "chicken squad". With teamwork and a minor assist from a squirrel, they manage to save the day.Expect to hear a burst of laughter every page or so. And on top of that, children will learn synonyms for big and scary AND what a rhombus looks like.

One Thousand Things: learn your first words with Little Mouse, by Anna Kovecses

From School Library Journal PreS-Gr 1—This visual encyclopedia introduces a variety of first words and concepts to preschool audiences. The content is organized into sections such as "First Things to Learn," "Things to Do with You," and "Things Around the World." Each spread shows a scene focused on a different theme with parts of the picture clearly labeled. Visually, the book works well, with all caps text that is large and easy to read. The digitally created illustrations are minimalistic and have an appealingly vintage feel. However, the organizational structure is not exactly intuitive. For example, "Things Around the World" includes pages about the seasons and weather, while "Things in Nature" contains a page called "What's in the Fruit Bowl?" Also, children will have difficulty distinguishing between the blue, light blue, and dark blue hues on the color spread. Despite the drawbacks, this book does have a lot to offer: the illustrations are eye-catching, and youngsters will enjoy searching for the mouse hidden on every page. VERDICT A serviceable addition for children discovering and exploring the world around them for the first time.—Kimberly Tolson, Medfield Public Library, MA

Review

"This book does have a lot to offer: the illustrations are eye-catching, and youngsters will enjoy searching for the mouse hidden on every page." - School Library Journal

"Familiar figures and concepts depicted in a simple graphic style invite very young children to catalog and identify many of the items they might encounter in their everyday worlds." - Kirkus Reviews

"A visual encyclopedia of things to spot and say with a difference, the pictures are strong, bold and dominate the page, the labels are clear and defined but it is not just about the learning, it comes with a game too, a little mouse to spot on every page! Compulsive and instructional fun, minimal and modern." - Armadillo

"To bill this book as a 'vocabulary builder' is to woefully underplay its hand. Study hard and this book will see you safely through nursery and in to reception as an assured four year old who can hold their own in the cut and thrust of classroom debate... the book is huggable, sniffable and strokable. The bright, digitally created images are easy on the eye, with kid and parent appeal and an air of comforting naivity. The clear font is helpful for early readers." - The Bookbag

"Help babies learn their first words with this visual encyclopedia. It's educational and adorable." - Glitter Guide

17 of 19 people found the following review helpful. retro-cute art gone wrong By harleycart This book is packed with sweet vintage-style illustrations using simple shapes and lovely colors. I can understand why adults would enjoy that aspect. It's cute. But as a tool for learning first words, it is ineffective. The illustrations are just not clear to young children. My preschoolers, who are old enough to know most of the words in this book (except "leek" and "radish" for example), were confused by some of the illustrations: they thought the tower was a rocket and the barn was a doghouse and the pickle was a cucumber, for example. Is that a peach or an apricot? A mango or an egg?The chapter categories don't add value and in fact add to the chaos. The first pages of "things in nature" are fruits and vegetables - I can't argue that they are found in nature, but kids don't really think of bananas as "things in nature." And why are seasons and weather categorized as "things around the world"? I thought "things around the world" would be more geographically interesting."What will you be when you grow up" is kind of disturbing. I can't even talk about it right now.An adorable mouse is "hiding" on every page, but finding him got old fast. He would be better served in a book with a plot.p.s. For teaching first words, DK has an excellent series of large board books, each called "Tabbed Board Books: My First ________" (words, colors, animals, home, etc), that expose toddlers to a broad vocabulary with clear photographs.

By aija holz this book is wonderful! the illustrations are simple but so so eye pleasing! labelled as a book for learning your first words it's exactly that! but i got it for my boy for his 3rd birthday and while he knows all the words in the book already, he is practicing his reading on the words. so it's versatile! it would also be great maybe for a kid of any age really learning english as a second language. this book is so good i kept getting it out of the cupboard to flip through the pages before i wrapped it for my birthday boy! i highly recommend it for kids of all ages really! and for the parents!

There's no rush, we just look at pictures - I can ask her the questions about the pictures and she can practice shapes, colors, parts of the body, and many basic words as we enjoy a little lap time cuddle and reading time together. Wonderful for toddlers/preschoolers with delightful illustrations. Highly recommend!

This book is a report on a journey of discovery

Most of my working life was spent as an economist and civil servant in the field of water management. When, on retirement, I was freed from dealing with work-a-day problems, I set off on a private search for a rather broader perspective on the human experience and quite naturally started out from the familiar. I have wandered far and wide on a meandering journey, like that of water itself. I have explored the interface between humankind and this deceptively bland, colorless, tasteless and odorless substance. I have delved into creation myths; looked at the emergence of civilizations and their decay; pondered the place of water in the human psyche, as expressed in art and poetry and folklore; considered its role as a factor of production, a source of energy, a conduit of transportation and a consumer good. In passing, my attention has been caught by wishing wells and water closets, changing concepts of physical and spiritual cleanliness, and a miscellany of comic and curious trivia. And I have turned to the natural sciences in search of answers to the question why this one simple substance should have such an all-pervading influence on our lives.

The book has no pretensions to being an academic work. Lacking the tools to deal more than superficially with most of the subjects touched upon, I turned to the insights and scholarship of others for help. This will be abundantly clear to anyone glancing at the quotations that grace the text, or browsing through the bibliography and endnotes. I have done my best fully to acknowledge my indebtedness to others and if I have failed anywhere I take this opportunity of apologizing most sincerely. Errors of interpretation are of course entirely my own.

In summary, this is a monothematic essay, a look at the world through one lens”" the rippling, complex lens of water. One can catch glimpses of other perspectives on the human story, with emphasis on economics, politics, religion, ideologies, cataclysms and so on. While these have added color to my central topic, they have not diverted me from it.

The one claim this essay may have to merit or originality is that it highlights and illuminates the amazing variety and diversity of the interactions between water and humanity. Perhaps it may contribute a little to restoring a sense of wonder at this elixir of life in the exploding number of city dwellers, who give it scant attention as long as it flows from their taps; and to a heightened caution in harnessing it for short-term material benefits, with cavalier disregard for the unpredictable consequences for generations to come.

Excellent book By Jolie Before I do my review, I have to put up this disclaimer: I received a copy of this book for a highly discounted price through Tomoson and the publisher. Any and all opinions expressed in this review are mine and mine alone. I received no financial compensation for this review. Now, on to the review. At the end of the review, I will include a links to Amazon for the paperback and Kindle version. Now, onto my reviewI am going to be honest, I was a teeny tiny bit apprehensive about reading this book. I don’t do well reading books that are basically monologues about certain subjects. They put me to sleep. Then I started reading the book and guess what, I was wrong. This book was a wonderfully written essay (of sorts) about water and the different ways it influenced different cultures/religions. From the book of Genesis to the Aborigines of Australia, it covered everything. Rivers, wells, oceans, lakes, streams, dams….all covered. Rainfall (and lack thereof)…covered. Mystical cults that are water based….covered. Bathing (ritual and lack of)….covered. Like I said….everything.The book had beautiful pictures of paintings that depicted water scenes. And she kindly included a glossary at the end. Now, it did take me a little longer to read but that was because of R deciding she wasn’t going to sleep at night (which means I didn’t sleep) and B got sick with a cold came with a high fever. So, if you want to read a book that covers everything water based, read this book. Will I reccomend this book to family and friends? AbsolutelyWill I read it again? Yes.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. so that I would not only broaden my knowledge but also be able me to read and enjoy the book emotionally By Roni Kaufman Review: Roni KaufmanFor me, growing up in a dry country and socialized to "save every drop", water has always been both a major emotional and a critical issue. Although I have traveled much around the globe, I am still fascinated whenever I see a big river or an area with many lakes.I started reading the book by carefully examining the table of content. The amazingly blend and comprehensive point of views presented, as well as the scholarly quality of the writing and the book organization – worried me a little bit. I wondered if the passion would also be dominant, so that I would not only broaden my knowledge but also be able me to read and enjoy the book emotionally. What I found was that the writer's passion for water can be identified on every page and picture. This is the thread that makes the reading of the book a unique intellectual as well as emotional experience. As an academic researcher of interactions between individuals and their communities, I was intrigued by the major motto of the book, presented in the introduction, examining the interaction between human as individuals and as civilizations with water. The immense contribution of water to the development of civilization is well documented in the book. What is lacking is the other side, the damage that human civilizations cause to water by disregarding environmental sensitivity. One example of this is the melting of the glaciers that endanger the existence of islands such as the Maldives and Marshal. Maybe in the next edition of this book Nina Selbest will relate to this aspect as well…The copy of the book that I bought was the electronic version which I read on my Kindle. The many pictures that illustrate the book contribute immensely to reading experience, even though they are in black and white (one of the limits of reading illustrated books in kindle).Although presenting historical and cultural point of views, it is clear that the writer knows from firsthand what she is writing about. Her deep knowledge of both water human culture and history is a rare combination because it demands practical knowledge in water management and a wide education and high intellectual and scholarship background.I highly recommend reading Writ in Water to everyone interested in water and humanity. Reading the book provides a passionate as well as intellectual experience.

This book takes Water - a basic and trivial substance, and makes it very special and precious By Talya Feldmann Let me start with a proper disclosure, the author of this wonderful book is my mother. Giving birth to "Writ in Water" was a long and invested process. I was delighted to see it published. But, beyond the personal connection, this book takes Water - a basic and trivial substance, and makes it very special and precious. My favorite chapter is the one about how the visual arts treated and applied water in their artistic works, from forty thousand years back to present days. In this chapter I found an interesting insight, a new way of looking at water described in paintings. Waters, when applied as part of a casual background, like a stream or lake, are there to say something, almost always optimistic and serene. Waters, when present in their absence, say something else, often related to thirst and suffering and death. Water can also be powerful and life threatening and many description deal with the struggle to stay on the right side of the waters. The most important message I found in this book, is an optimistic one. Through water one realizes that all humans (and all living things), spread both chronologically and geographically, have something very basic in common. Water is the source of life and the drive behind so many aspects of life. Water was and is the drive behind engineering innovation, water is beauty and is the inspiration for romance in all art forms, water is associated with religion and the gods, and less optimistic, water is often the reason for conflict and war.The book Writ in Water by Nina Selbst, is a pleasure to read, the writing is rich and flowing, the text includes lots of intriguing information, some mythological and some hard facts, but all fascinating.Read it slowly to extend the pleasure.

Introducing HILO—the funny, New York Times Bestselling, full-color new middle-grade graphic novel series that Bone creator Jeff Smith calls “delightful.”   D.J. and his friend Gina are totally normal kids. But that was before a mysterious boy came crashing down from the sky! Hilo doesn’t know where he came from, or what he’s doing on Earth. (Or why going to school in only your underwear is a bad idea!) . . . But what if Hilo wasn’t the only thing to fall to our planet? Can the trio unlock the secrets of his past? Can Hilo survive a day at school? And are D.J. and Gina ready to save the world?   HILO is Calvin and Hobbes meets Big Nate and is just right for fans of Bone and comic books as well as laugh-out-loud school adventures like Jedi Academy and Wimpy Kid!   Praise for HILO“More giant robotic ants and people going 'Aaaah!' than in the complete works of Jane Austen”—Neil Gaiman, bestselling author“Every kid would love a pal like HILO, and every kid will love this book!” —Lincoln Peirce, bestselling author of the Big Nate series“HILO is delightful, silly, tender, and most importantly: funny.” —Jeff Smith, bestselling author of the Bone series"Fast paced, furiously funny, and will have kids waiting on the edge of their seats for more."—Jeffrey Brown, bestselling author of Jedi Academy"I LOVE this book. And I'm not the only one. My 11-year old son loved it. And when my 7-year old daughter saw it, she picked it up and loved it too. Hilo is alive, actionpacked...and amazing fun. Not since Bone have I been this excited to see the launch of a series."—Brad Meltzer, bestselling author The Fifth Assassin, Host The History Channel’s Decoded"HILO is loads of slapstick fun with a touch of tenderness that kids will love."--Dan Santat, Caldecott Medal Winner"High energy and HILARIOUS!"--Gene Luen Yang, winner of the Printz and Eisner Awards, two time National Book Award Finalist"A perfect book for any kid who ever needed a friend and then had one with superpowers fall from space.” —Seth Meyers, actor, comedian and writer* "Universally appealing. A wholeheartedly weird and wonderful tale of friendship, acceptance, and robots."—Kirkus Reviews, Starred Review * "Diverse characters, good friends, and humorous dialogue coupled with colorful illustrations and plenty of action makes this a must-have."—School Library Journal, Starred Review"The most enjoyable hero to hit the library shelves in years. Good clean laser-beams-coming-outta-your-hands fun for the whole family."—http://blogs.slj.com/afuse8production/ “HILO kept me flipping pages with its compelling mix of modern language and old-fashioned charm. There are some big themes at play here—loyalty, outsiderdom and the tyranny of technology—but, thanks to Winick's usual dose of humor and action, kids may find it suitable for their grownups.”—Armistead Maupin, bestselling author Tales Of The City series, The Night Listener.

Hilo Book 1: The Boy Who Crashed to Earth, by Judd Winick

From School Library Journal Gr 2–5—Daniel Jackson Lim, aka DJ, is an ordinary boy in a family of overachievers. He meets Hilo, a robot boy who fell to Earth from space and doesn't know where he came from or what he is doing on this planet. DJ, along with his best friend, Gina, help Hilo unlock the secrets of his past and stop the destruction of the planet. The first installment in this graphic novel series is a fast-paced adventure that is beautifully illustrated in full color and aimed at readers who would love to have a superhero friend. Captivating, silly, tender, and, most importantly, funny, this title will be popular with all readers—from reluctant to avid. The strength of friendship and cooperation is a theme throughout. With a cliff-hanger ending, the book will have kids eager for the sequel. VERDICT Diverse characters, good friends, and humorous dialogue coupled with colorful illustrations and plenty of action make this a must-have for all children's graphic novel collections.—Paula Huddy, The Blake School-Highcroft Campus, Wayzata, MN

Review "A wholeheartedly weird and wonderful tale of friendship, acceptance, and robots."—Kirkus Reviews starred review"Diverse characters, good friends, and humorous dialogue coupled with colorful illustrations and plenty of action makes this a must-have for all children’s graphic novel collections." —School Library Journal starred review“This is lively and entertaining adventure with enough risk to give it heft and plenty of solid friendship to keep readers buoyed… Lush, bright colors and a freewheeling approach to panels create an immersive environment: it’s clear that this is art, and it’s also clear that the art is running the show, not the panels or even the words. Readers will likely find it a tough wait for the next volume to come along.”—Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books starred review

Tresca At first glance I didn't realize HILO was a comic book, but that just made it all the more fun when I sprung it on my seven-year-old son. To my surprise, my five-year-old daughter loves it too -- and she's just learning to read! We're still reading it every few nights.Nearly everything about the plot is tailor-made for kids: In a family of overachievers, D.J. is notable for being ordinary. Lonely after his friend Gina moves away, D.J. drifts aimlessly through school until HILO falls to Earth. Goofy, enthusiastic (he thinks rice and milk is "OUTSTANDING!"), and utterly dependent on D.J., HILO brings out the best in his new Earth friend who finds he is far more extraordinary than he ever dreamed. On its surface, HILO is basically Starman for kids. It's every fish-out-of-water alien trope crammed into one comic. But it doesn't matter, because Judd Winick's comic timing (every time someone burps, and HILO burps a lot, D.J. yells "repeat business!"), his art style, and his masterful dialogue captures little kids and their secret world of tragedy and adventure. HILO manages to be both whimsical and serious -- the alien dangers are real, and HILO openly admits his fear -- but all three friends rise above their challenges to become better people. And that's what makes this graphic novel simply outstanding. An awesome comic that needs to be a movie.

The characters are portrayed with tons of personality, and the action scenes are filled with energy. The text is easy to read, flows well and is the perfect complement to the graphics. This story opens with action, and never quits. Every young reader will be able to relate to DJ, a young boy who doesn't feel like he's good at anything, and who just so happens to be stuck in a family of overachievers. Heck, I could relate to DJ! He's the perfect person to find HiLo, a boy with mysterious origins and a mysterious purpose. It doesn't take long for this story about action and aliens to turn into a story about friendship and finding your strength. This book handles it all with nary a misstep. I look at quite a few graphic novels every year, and seldom do I find one that is so entirely kid friendly. So many new works of graphic fiction lose themselves in art that is too pretentious, and stories that are far too esoteric for children. This one keeps its audience squarely in mind and tells a story that is entertaining and full of heart. I'm so glad that this is just book 1, and I look forward to the continuing adventures of DJ and HiLo.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. We dont get to see the start of their relationship :( By Snowbunny1977 This wasn't as upbeat as I thought it would be. I mean its a Christmas tale and I just assumed it would be light-hearted. Not that it was depressing or moody. There are good parts but mostly sad. :( We also directly jump into their story after they met and dated and have been intimate. I dont really like those stories. I wanna be there when all that good stuff happens! Mostly what this was is Daisy is going away for the weekend after learning her boyfriend Sawyer was with another woman. Well...actually he didnt and instead of staying to listen to what he had to say she runs off. Ok...in her defense she does have trust issues because her dad did run around on her mom at one point. That was between them though AND it was over 10 years ago. Her parents worked through it and are fine now. I kinda thought Daisy overreacted and held a grudge with her dad too long she needed to let it go. Its messed things up with Sawyer because of that and I am sure other relationships as well. She immediately runs off instead of facing things and finding out what really happened. She gets into an accident and loses her memory briefly. Sawyer saves her life and they do work things out. There were times I didnt like Daisy's character. She's a jump to conclusions before finding the facts type of person. Points out other peoples faults or mistakes instead of looking at herself and owning up that she might have been wrong too. I liked the southern swagger accent flow of the book. That was cute. I think I was a little disappointed in the heroine's character and feeling like we got half a story. This felt more like an epilogue at the end of a book. I like getting whole and complete romance stories and it just bothered me this time. :( Thats one opinion though...others will love the story. I didnt hate it but I didnt love it either.

Ms. Cooper writes heroines that are sexy, sassy, and perfect in any size they might come in.A Candy cane Christmas is no different!Daisy has it in her mind to run from heartbreak and hole up in her family's isolated cabin, but her sexy sweetheart has another thing in mind for her.Sawyer is a character that makes you wish you had some spare mistletoe hanging about in your pocket. I for one wouldn't mind waking up to a little bit of sugar from this sexy stud. Hot and steamy this series is one to keep! If you like short and sexy reads, this is the book for you.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. 5 Beautiful Stars By Little Spice I’ve been swimming in a sea of so-so books lately and Lina Andersson just threw me a life line. You need to read the preceding books in the series before reading Equilibrium or continuing on with this review. Things that happened, especially in Resonance, have a huge impact on this book so spoilers abound. Also, if violence against women is a trigger for you, you should stop reading now.I freaking adored Equilibrium. This was not a fun, light book to read and most of it wasn’t even romantic, but it’s going on my favorite book list. There is beauty to be found in this story about how one young woman and her family heal from a blow that many would never completely recover from and the help that came from the most unlikeliest of people, a young biker named Roach. If you’ve read the Marauder’s series, like me you’ve “watched” Eliza grow up which made this story even harder to read. Tragedy struck at the end of Resonance, and at 17, Eliza became a victim of a brutal attack. What was left was a shell of a girl just going through the motions, a devastated father who blamed himself, a mother frantic about what will happen to her daughter, and a motorcycle club on the edge of war but brought to their knees with worry over their beloved princess. As time goes by, Eliza seems to be healing, or that’s what she wants everyone to think. The entire club family is tiptoeing around her and killing her slowly with kindness. Desperate to believe she is going to be fine, they don’t see that she is existing but not living, and she certainly isn’t fine. Roach, a brother on loan from another club, as an outsider looking in, sees that she isn’t right at all. Before the kidnapping, he wasn’t impressed with Eliza who he considered a spoiled rotten brat. Finally fed up with her downward slide, he calls her on her it. He’s the only one willing to confront her instead of pretending all is well. Having been through his own tragedy, he knows what she is going through and offers to help.I adored Roach. I couldn’t believe how strong he was, especially for a man as young as he was. Generally I would never believe that a NA character could be as believably mature as Roach was, but LA pulled it off. As a street kid and recovering drug addict you saw where he got the maturity from. I loved that he didn’t even like Eliza, but saw someone in trouble and decided to step in though it would have been easier to ignore her. This was a definite slow burn relationship. No immediately falling into bed for these two, obviously. We got to see them go from a somewhat adversarial relationship to friends, then to best friends. It was a slow, sweet relationship that would not have worked if presented any other way.Eliza, always a favorite side character for me, grew so much in this book and her strength of character just shined through. She started a downward slide but that was to be expected. It was her realization that you can’t forget and shove it under the rug, you have to own it and conquer it to survive that made me come to respect her character, no matter how young she is.Brick, another favorite of mine, had a hard battle on his hands too. He knows she was targeted because she was his daughter. The whole purpose was to bring him low, and it did. He was riddled with guilt and willing to do anything to help his daughter, even if it meant trusting Roach, who he wasn’t even sure he liked. This was almost as much his story, as it was Eliza and Roach’s.Equilibrium deals with some hard topics beautifully. The Marauders Series is one of my favorites and books like this is why. Gritty, hard to read at times, but absolutely beautiful even when dealing with ugly topics.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. AMAZING! By Kindle Customer 4.5 RATING- I'm not surprised that I enjoyed Equilibrium as much as I did, Lina Anderson is a strong writer that has rated high with me in the past. I am surprised at how invested I became in the relationship of these two characters and the healing of the heroine. Lina Anderson has a real talent for creating characters that I like and relationships that are easy to root for.Readers expecting a lot of sex, action, or general MC drama may be disappointed or bored. The story was enjoyable but was focused mainly on the friendship that slowly develops between the two main characters, not blood and guts and mayhem. There aren't a lot of cameo's from characters from previous books, just mentions here and there. Brick and Mel do play a significant role in the story line though and were a reminder of how much I liked these two, especially Brick. Love him.I’m surprised that more of my friends aren’t reading and enjoying Lina Anderson. I admit the Marauders series isn’t the most exciting MC based series but it’s hands down, one of the best. While I tend to read mainly guilty pleasure wham-bam type reads I'm glad I came back to the Marauders series. I would have hated to miss this one. The story was beautifully told and I highly recommend to readers that enjoy quality written, slower paced romances.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Another great installment in a fabulous series By Ellen I discovered Lina Andersson's series about the Marauders MC earlier this year and have devoured every installment. They are the very best MC books out there - bar none. This book deals very realistically with the aftermath of a young woman's abduction and rape while not getting preachy or maudlin. I particularly enjoyed the "preface" at the beginning of each chapter, where an earlier episode in Eliza's life was recounted. If I had one complaint, it would be that there wasn't enough storyline about other Marauders characters we read about in earlier books. While it was revealed that Vi had another son and she appeared to do Eliza's tattoo, I wanted to read more about Mitch and Anna, Mac, Billie, etc. But it's the author's prerogative to tell her story and this one is by no means lacking. It's a testament to how much I enjoyed every previous book that I want to know more about those characters.Read this in a day and I will no doubt go back and re-read it; I've read all the others more than once, and this one is wonderful, too.

Excerpt from WordsworthI cannot, perhaps, more fitly begin this short biography than with some words in which its subject has expressed his own feelings as to the spirit in which such a task should be approached. "Silence," says Wordsworth, "is a privilege of the grave, a right of the departed: let him, therefore, who infringes that right by speaking publicly of, for, or against those who cannot speak for themselves, take heed that he opens not his mouth without a sufficient sanction. Only to philosophy enlightened by the affectious does it belong justly to estimate the claims of the deceased, on the one hand, and of the present age and future generations, on the other, and to strike a balance between them. Such philosophy runs a risk of becoming extinct among us, if the coarse intrusions into the recesses, the gross breaches upon the sanctities, of domestic life, to which we have lately been more and more accustomed, are to be regarded as indications of a vigorous state of public feeling.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. 3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Soothing our souls in tranquil Joy By Shalom Freedman Wordsworth is to my mind the most calming and soothing of the great Poets. When he opens 'Earth has not anything to show more fair' in one of his greatest poems and comes to 'Never did sun more beautifully steep in its first splendor, valley, rock or hill' we feel a peace and a calm of cosmic proportion. Wordsworth in the work many schoolchildren first meet him through speaks at the end of the poem of those images ' which flash upon the inner eye which is the Bliss of Solitude, And then my heart with Pleasure fills, and dances with the Daffodills.' We feel in his work an incredible ability to arise in joy at perception of Nature and at its recollected contemplation. The great bounding youthful perception is in Wordsworth ordinarily tempered by a more mature appreciation 'recollected in tranquillity'.Wordsworth's greatness is in the short poems, and in the great Odes, 'The Intimations of Immortality ' and 'Tintern Abbey'.And it is a greatness which enhances the life, the spirit the happiness of its true readers.

Excerpt from Figures of Several CenturiesThe Confessions of St. Augustine are the first autobiography, and they have this to distinguish them from all other autobiographies, that they are addressed directly to God. Rousseau's unburdening of himself is the last, most effectual manifestation of that nervous, defiant consciousness of other people which haunted him all his life. He felt that all the men and women whom he passed on his way through the world were at watch upon him, and mostly with no very favourable intentions. The exasperation of all those eyes fixed upon him, the absorbing, the protesting self-consciousness which they called forth in him, drove him, in spite of himself, to set about explaining himself to other people, to the world in general. His anxiety to explain, not to justify, himself was after all a kind of cowardice before his own conscience.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Publication date: 1916Arthur Symons was a poet and critic, a minor Decadent, somewhat looked down upon by Oscar Wilde and Max Beerbohm. It is hard to escape the notion that he was the model for Enoch Soames: a memory of the eighteen-nineties.The essays are arranged chronologically by subject, and so one must linger a few centuries over Saint Augustine, John Donee, Casanova, Emily Bronte and Edgar Allan Poe before Mr. Symons really begins to get interesting. Coventry Patmore may be about 1/10,000 as important as Saint Augustine, but Symons's personal recollections of this older minor poet have a freshness and interest no one can attain about Augustine and other 'greats.' His essay on Walter Pater is likewise intimate and revealing:... Of De Quincey he spoke with an admiration which I had difficulty in sharing, and I remember his showing me with pride a set of his works bound in half-parchment, with pale gold lettering on the white backs, and with the cinnamon edges which he was so fond of. Of Flaubert we rarely met without speaking. He thought Julien l'Hospitalier as perfect as anything he had done. L'Education Sentimentale was one of the books which he advised me to read; that, and Le Rouge et le Noir of Stendhal; and he spoke with particular admiration of two episodes in the former, the sickness and the death of the child. Of the Goncourts he spoke with admiration tempered by dislike. Their books often repelled him, yet their way of doing things seemed to him just the way things should be done; and done before almost any one else.Or consider this reflection, prompted by a quote from a letter:'I send this prompt answer, for I know by experience that when I delay my delays are apt to be lengthy.' A review took him sometimes a year to get through; and remained in the end, like his letters, a little cramped, never finished to the point of ease, like his published writings.
