A riveting road map to the development of modern scientific thought.

Far too often, public discussion of science is carried out by journalists, voters, and politicians who have received their science secondhand. The Story of Science shows us the joy and importance of reading groundbreaking science writing for ourselves and guides us back to the masterpieces that have changed the way we think about our world, our cosmos, and ourselves.

Able to be referenced individually or listened to together as the narrative of Western scientific development, the book's 28 succinct chapters lead listeners from the first science texts by Hippocrates, Plato, and Aristotle through 20th-century classics in biology, physics, and cosmology. The Story of Science illuminates everything from mankind's earliest inquiries to the butterfly effect, from the birth of the scientific method to the rise of earth science and the flowering of modern biology.

Each chapter recommends one or more classic books and provides entertaining accounts of crucial contributions to science, vivid sketches of the scientist-writers, and clear explanations of the mechanics underlying each concept. The Story of Science reveals science to be a dramatic undertaking practiced by some of history's most memorable characters. It reminds us that scientific inquiry is a human pursuit―an essential, often deeply personal, sometimes flawed, frequently brilliant way of understanding the world.

In the tradition of her perennial bestseller The Well-Educated Mind, Susan Wise Bauer delivers an accessible, entertaining, and illuminating springboard into the scientific education you never had.

It walks you through the development of scientific thought and discovery through the ages, with pointers to where to find accessible copies of the primary source documents, and tips on what to get from reading them-- including a website with links to free copies and excerpts of the primary sources where available. This book belongs on the shelf for any individual who would like a better grounding in where our major western scientific ideas come from, how they impacted other scientists, and how scientists build upon the work of others, whether that means confirming a theory or moving ideas in a new direction. Homeschoolers with high school students will also love this book, no matter what style of homeschooling is practiced; it is not a book only for classical homeschoolers. I already have plans for a high school level philosophy of science course, and my 14 year old has been sneaking the book off to read parts of it. He knows our course from it will be a couple of years away yet, but it was just too enticing.

By Steve G This book is not so much about the history of science, it is about the great writings of science, looking at the key writings since the time of Aristotle. Author Susan Wise Bauer encourages the reader to explore the original works and specifies where the reader can find them. This is excellent as the advice is very specific and not something general such as “look online.” I found the discussion fascinating and it has tempted me to find these old works. Ultimately, this book is about the history of science and it is excellent. And unlike a lot of history of science books, it covers biology as well. I strongly recommend this book for anyone interested in exploring these old writings but don’t know where to start. Bauer writes in a conversational manner and the science is easy to understand so I can recommend this book for anyone interested in the history of science.

Bauer tells the most well-known stories in science and the most famous scientists and thinkers from contributions by people close to the scientists. Thu,s Galileo refuted Aristotle's view that heavy objects can only fall to the ground at the same time as lighter ones only if they fell from a greater height. Galileo's discoveries and thoughts also had an immense impact on Newton; and Newton himself, excelled after his feud with Robert Hooke and the Royal Society over his discovery that colours are merely refracted light - Hooke claimed that Newton had stolen his ideas. Similarly, the discovery of the structure of the DNA by Francis Crick and James Watson (and Rosalind Franklin) might not have taken place if Crick had not been goaded by Watson to ignore English conventions and stayed away from this field of study because another Englishman (Maurice Wilkins) had already started on it.Bauer's account of the race between Charles Darwin and Alfred Wallace to the publication of their theories of evolution is, in comparison to the full stories of both men in their many biographies, a short but exciting story that is one of the most pulsating races of all time. And can a book of this nature overlook the 'Big Bang'? Certainly not. The story of the universe is told from the lenses of Edwin Hubble who began with the speculation that when we look into the cosmos we might be seeing not just stars but 'clusters of galaxies'.History and the universe is a complex web. We may not yet have the ultimate answer - if there is one - but Bauer has given us a rich little book to take with us on our contemplative journey.

From Abronia to Zinnia, Jewels of the Plains describes the natural history and garden merits of more than five hundred Great Plains wildflowers. Considered the authoritative guide by native plant enthusiasts and horticulturists, it captures the unique beauty, resilience, and variety of wildflowers in the Great Plains.

Claude A. Barr did not set out to be a writer. In 1910, he homesteaded 160 acres of prairie in the southwest corner of South Dakota, intending to become a farmer. Despite challenging conditions, Barr fell in love with the land and its native flora. He began contributing profiles of plains wildflowers to gardening magazines, which precipitated requests for seed and led him to start a mail-order nursery, Prairie Gem Ranch. What began as a Depression-era sideline eventually gained a worldwide clientele, and Barr became a respected ambassador for the wildflowers of this part of the American landscape.

Decades of observing plants in the wild and growing them for his nursery, as well as careful study of scientific sources, gave Barr unequaled knowledge that culminated in this acclaimed book. Wonderfully written and deeply researched, Jewels of the Plains is more than a field guide or how-to manual. It’s a pioneering text on native plant horticulture that details plant life on the prairie in the voice of one with intimate familiarity with the subject. Each description reads like a mini nature essay, giving insight into both the plants and Barr’s engaging personality.

Edited to incorporate new scientific information, this edition includes an Introduction and supplemental notes by botanist and horticulturalist James H. Locklear. He places Barr’s remarkable life and work in historic and scientific context, illuminating his accomplishments from a fresh perspective.

I wish to speak a word for Nature, for absolute freedom and wildness, as contrasted with a freedom and culture merely civil--to regard man as an inhabitant, or a part and parcel of Nature, rather than a member of society. I wish to make an extreme statement, if so I may make an emphatic one, for there are enough champions of civilization: the minister and the school committee and every one of you will take care of that.

Although we usually think of technology as something unique to modern times, our ancestors began to create the first technologies millions of years ago in the form of prehistoric tools and weapons. Over time, eight key technologies gradually freed us from the limitations of our animal origins.

The fabrication of weapons, the mastery of fire, and the technologies of clothing and shelter radically restructured the human body, enabling us to walk upright, shed our body hair, and migrate out of tropical Africa. Symbolic communication transformed human evolution from a slow biological process into a fast cultural process. The invention of agriculture revolutionized the relationship between humanity and the environment, and the technologies of interaction led to the birth of civilization. Precision machinery spawned the industrial revolution and the rise of nation-states; and in the next metamorphosis, digital technologies may well unite all of humanity for the benefit of future generations.

Synthesizing the findings of primatology, paleontology, archeology, history, and anthropology, Richard Currier reinterprets and retells the modern narrative of human evolution that began with the discovery of Lucy and other Australopithecus fossils. But the same forces that allowed us to integrate technology into every aspect of our daily lives have also brought us to the brink of planetary catastrophe. Unbound explains both how we got here and how human society must be transformed again to achieve a sustainable future.

Technology: "The deliberate modification of any natural object or substance with forethought to achieve a specific end or to serve a specific purpose."

18 of 18 people found the following review helpful. A satisfying complete work beautifully written and presented. By Cooper Robert I have just put down what will be a classic and required reading in anthropology departments. 'Unbound' is more: it is a highly readable, believable history of how Man became what s/he is. It's a big book, and getting five million years into some 400+ pages must have been a Herculean task of editing for Currier. I read it almost at a sitting. Rarely can one call a work of non-fiction a page-turner, but this one is. And having been a Professor of Anthropology or actively involved in practical anthropology all my working life, and looking for the faults and what's missing, I am surprised to say at no point did I stop and note 'this is wrong' or 'he missed out ~'. This is one of those satisfying complete works that will appeal equally to the academic and the educated 'man in the street'. The structure is more than clever, it is original: with inventions leading up to language, the point at which most assessments of modern man begin. The reader will get some new viewpoints on early development ~ bipedalism and the invention of the spear stand out~ and, most importantly, how the bits go together to make evolution. The title is as brilliant as the 'binding' into various parts for ease of reference. Read Darwin, then read Currier. We are going to hear much of this book.

11 of 11 people found the following review helpful. Highly recommended By William Manley Unbound combines the best of a lifetime of discriminating, multi-disciplinary scholarship with the storytelling abilities of great scholarly, humanistic writers like Desmond Morris, Carl Sagan, and historian James McPherson. Dr. Currier's highly accessible work is alive with the energy of discovery. Synthesizing insights from paleontology, primatology, cultural anthropology, and related sciences it surprises and challenges accepted narratives of human evolution. In the process, it not only conveys a new understanding of our profound and ancient connections; it also illuminates key facets of modern society. Highly recommended for all serious students of human culture and the humanities--and for any reader who wants a greater sense of place at a time when understanding how we function as a species has never been more urgently needed.

8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Fascinating five star read By jayne foley I was immediately drawn to this book, because it covers the last five million years of human evolution, including time periods that I haven't read much about. I really liked the way Currier states his position and then goes on to back it up with facts and research. It gives the book great credibility. I was particularly impressed by the fact that the author's arguments were so reasonable and full of common sense, and I loved the way he used information that was new to me, such as the relationship between human lice and the technology of clothing, or the way apes make their beds, to reach conclusions about human evolution. Unbound is one of the best nonfiction books I have read.

The man should have youth and strength who seeks adventure in the wide, waste spaces of the earth, in the marshes, and among the vast mountain masses, in the northern forests, amid the steaming jungles of the tropics, or on the deserts of sand or of snow. He must long greatly for the lonely winds that blow across the wilderness, and for sunrise and sunset over the rim of the empty world. His heart must thrill for the saddle and not for the hearthstone.

A Book-Lover's Holidays in the Open (annotated), by Theodore Roosevelt

From the Back Cover As much a symbol of the nation's adventurous past as he was the very picture of booming 20th-century progress, Theodore Roosevelt--politician and soldier, naturalist and historian--was still a young man when he left the Oval Office, and he spent the decade after his presidency exploring the world... and sharing his experiences in his inimitable prose. In this 1916 book, he leads us:

* on a cougar hunt on the rim of the Grand Canyon * trekking across the Navajo Desert * to a Hopi snake dance * across the Andes and Northern Patagonia * through bird reserves at the mouth of the Mississippi * and much more...

Roosevelt's rip-roaring, real-life exploits are just as entertaining today as they were a century ago, and serve as a stirring reminder of the breathtaking beauty and lurking danger of the natural world.

About the Author In addition to his political accomplishments, Theodore Roosevelt (1858-1919), the twenty-sixth president of the United States, is known for his achievements as a naturalist, explorer, hunter, soldier, and author.

Weber Theodore Roosevelt, you either love the guy or can't stand him. i think he's great. the title is a little mis-leading, there is only one chapter about books and reading, the rest of the book is about hunting, horses, wildlife and to some degree (minor)evolution. the man can wax poetical and paint great pictures of the landscape verbally so you can 'see' what he sees.great bookand it came in excellent condition

Now this book is meant to be a Beater. In which I mean it is meant to be enjoyed to the fullest without a concern for the binding. You can read it and abuse it while your First additions and leather bounds do their job of showcasing your collection. This is a fun book and as you would expect it is both fun and educational. If your even looking at this book chances are you bought it for the same reason I did as only a serious roosevelt reader would be looking for this book. So buy it, sit back and get ready to enjoy more excitement from the greatest outdoorsmen that ever lived.

It was stunningly beautiful. ~Southern Vixens Book Obsessions BlogI couldn't put it down. ~Reading In Sarah's Corner Book BlogI found the story extremely enjoyable to read as the characters were very well-written with a good attention to minor details that set the characters in the readers mind. It's one of the few books I can honestly say brought me to tears. ~Tangled Hearts Book Reviews

Time and time again Jeanne delivers beautiful stories with just enough heartache and humor to keep her audience on the edge of their seats. Nothing so heavy you cannot breathe but enough to suck all your emotions into the story.Jeanne’s stories always leave a permanent mark on my soul, Compass included.Jeanne’s sexy nerdy pilot Ryan Fisher and her snarky Doctor Alexis York in Compass both will have a special place in my heart. Both characters were complex and had great back-stories. I loved how Jeanne derived Alexis and Ryan’s love story from such a sweet childhood friendship both held onto until they bumped into one another again.“I can’t believe you are here,” he rasped, as he brushed her hair back from her face. “You don’t know how many times I dreamt of you.” ← anyone else swoon at Mr. Fisher like I did?!And Jeanne doesn’t stop there folks. She is always sprinkling her books with fantastic supporting characters. My favorite this time was Declan Hart. This man made no bones about it. He was a player but also had a heart and wanted Alexis and Ryan happy. My favorite Alexis and Declan scene was when Alexis is ribbing Declan and he referred to his junk to the “thunder down under,” I nearly died. That man always had a comeback.Instead of going on and on about how much I love Ryan and Alexis, I thought I would share with you two of my favorite scenes. One as the Texas State Fair scene, I am an Okie so this really hit home for me. Jeanne did such a great job with Fair and OU vs Texas game. But this is a huge scene for our characters with such growth and trust. I just loved it so much. ((Boomer Sooner BABY!!))My second favorite scene was when Jeanne gave us a scene between Alexis and her sister Cora. This again was huge staple of the story. It was poised and absolutely perfect. It made me all teary eyed. I could feel the emotion of the scene.

Although there were many times I just wanted to grab these two and make them kiss already!!!! It was a great story. I came very very close to putting my kindle in the freezer like Joey from Friends. But, I kept reading and it did not need to be put in the freezer :)

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. I absolutely fell in love with this book just from the first few pages By Brandi Pearson I absolutely fell in love with this book just from the first few pages. Ryan and Alexis are childhood friends and from the very beginning, I got a look at how their relationship was like. I could even feel the love these two had for each other as kids, and I was sad neither one expressed their feelings. I understood the reason behind it, but I still wanted them to be together even at the tender age of sixteen. Years, and I mean years later, I was shocked they met up again. I was happy and excited, hoping that yes, this was their time!! Unfortunately, it’s not always such a smooth ride for these two. At times, I was so frustrated at both of them. Alexis is holding onto so much pain and heartache from her past, and she can’t seem to let that go. Ryan is still that shy boy on the inside, even though he’s changed so much since he was a kid. Both have a lot they have to work out within themselves, but at the same time, I think it was meant to be that way.I really loved this book. Alexis is hilarious and she’s so outspoken. Ryan is my all-time favorite book boyfriend now. He’s sweet and caring but at the same time he has that alpha male trait. I loved this book. It wasn’t overly sappy, it wasn’t overly done at all. The pacing was awesome, and at times I was so worried for the characters. I don’t give away spoilers, so you will have to read it! I highly recommend this book and I know it will be one I will be rereading again in the future!

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Wonderful Read By flame800900 I read this the moment I saw it was out. Goosefeather was one of my favorite characters from Bluestar's story and I wanted to know more about him. The novella size was fine, but kept wanting for more after the story was done. Goosefeather is an amazing character all the more so for what happens to him. He's right up there with Yellowfang and Pebble Heart for my favorite medicine cats. The only issue I have with this story was it didn't feel long enough. I would have loved to keep reading to the very start of Bluestar's story. But the size was still not too bad and it did give us a lot of information on him. The interactions between him and his clan and all of it was amazing. It's no wonder he would appear to be talking to himself during Bluestar's Prophecy.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. It's worth the time and money I spent on it and enjoyed it, giving it full stars By Ally Misery First things first, this story is a short story, a novella size, an insight on a strange medicine cat named Goosefeather and not a full length novel. It's worth the time and money I spent on it and enjoyed it, giving it full stars. I feel Goosefeather's Curse is up there with Hollyleaf's Story for me and I loved Hollyleaf's arc at the end of OOTS. I was pleasantly surprised by the story line for Goosefeather and felt the Erin's did a good job on this. I wondered about this strange medicine cat who could predict by signs from clouds and weird phenomena in the old forest rather then dreaming with Star Clan and why he seemed more in-tune with predictions then all the other medicine cats. Reading his story, I know why he was a bit off, for which the reason was a plausible one that I accept. All this explains why he was the way he was in Bluestar's Prophecy.I feel sorry for Goosefeather and now he has a special place in my heart along with Firestar, Jayfeather, Squirrelflight and Crowfeather. Goosefeather had a very hard and lonely life from kit to elder. Now for him being part of StarClan, I hope it made up for what he was essentially cursed with.*** On another note, a bit off topic, if the Erin's read their reviews: I like this novellas between the full series and super editions. They connect everything and give the reader a little more explanation of what cats are experiencing and feeling, often being a picture we haven't been shown, such as Hollyleaf's Story life spent in the tunnels and here with Goosefeather's Curse are backstory that is intriguing. I really, really would LOVE to read a novella about Crowfeather with his thoughts when he took Nightcloud as his mate then how he really felt about Breezepelt, Jayfeather, Lionblaze and Hollyleaf.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Great By Rainsong Of AirClan I Loved this book. I was suprised about Goosefeather's past, no wonder he ended up like that! Too many cats took him for granted, even though he had an amazing gift. I hope we will get to see more of him in StarClan
