When I received it I thought....well the book cover is poorly done. Certainly not what a lecturer of painting at the Royal Academy in 1904 would prescribe for his book. It is a glossy yellow cover with an island of white in which the title is floated and a little clip art rose added..... O.K. so I don't get it let's move on. The pages are rather thin and the text is a digital copy of what looks like an old dot type printer from the early eighties. Alright its actually a photocopy of a 1980's era reprinting used library book... I found it legible if dark except for the images which are useless and the last page was irritatingly left out...really. The pencil markings from library book along with some torn pages and haphazardly aligned pages indicate that this is the very same copy made available online by someone out of California that I had previously downloaded. I expected a simple cloth hardcover for the just shy of $30. Nope. I would not be surprised if it is ACTUALLY MY download somehow fed into the printers server with the last page deliberately left out by the publisher just to be "cute". I expected a perfect reprint of the original publication and not an imperfect version of my own download from an archivist site. It follows that I am disappointed....Instead of the hard cover book to go on my book shelf in my permanent collection I have a reminder of being ripped off by Kessinger Publishing.. In my book I include a copy of this review and a copy of the last page and plan to wrap it in a cloth cover. Now for the writing. Excellent stuff, highly recommended reading for serious contemporary artists. Clausen was a very accomplished and influential painter of international acclaim in his time and we are lucky that he wrote anything about painting at all. He points out serious and obvious shortcomings of Impressionism that are usually and strangely not brought to light. Clausen answers very important questions for the professional level painter and does so in a forthright manner being clearly confessional of his prejudices and limitations. I like this guy! I intend to also read Sir George Clausens' other book regarding objectives and ideals in art but I will simply get it bound myself at Kinko's or contact a good printer and specify a tasteful treatment. The publisher is Kessinger Publishing. I highly recommend the reading but have it bound by anyone other.

Six hundred and twenty-five pounds cash, and…Obsidian Privilege Card. Right, I think that's everything, sir. Sign here to confirm return of your property.'Zaccheo Giordano didn't react to the warden's sneer as he scrawled on the barely legible form. Nor did he react to the resentful envy in the man's eyes when his gaze drifted to where the sleek silver limousine waited beyond three sets of barbed wire.Romeo Brunetti, Zaccheo's second-in-command and the only person he would consider draping the term friend upon, stood beside the car, brooding and unsmiling, totally unruffled by the armed guard at the gate or the bleak South East England surroundings.Had Zaccheo been in an accommodating mood, he'd have cracked a smile. But he wasn't in an accommodating mood. He hadn't been for a very long time. Fourteen months, two weeks, four days and nine hours to be exact. Zaccheo was positive he could count down to the last second if required. No one would require it of him, of course. He'd served his time. With three and a half months knocked off his eighteen-month sentence for good behaviour. The rage fused into his DNA bubbled beneath his skin. He showed no outward sign of it as he pocketed his belongings. The three-piece Savile Row suit he'd entered prison in stank of decay and misery, but Zaccheo didn't care. He'd never been a slave to material comforts. His need for validation went far deeper. The need to elevate himself into a better place had been a soul-deep pursuit from the moment he was old enough to recognise the reality of the life he'd been born into. A life that had been a neverending whirlpool of humiliation, violence and greed. A life that had seen his father debased and dead at thirty-five.Memories tumbled like dominoes as he walked down the harshly lit corridor to freedom. He willed the overwhelming sense of injustice that had festered for long, harrowing months not to explode from his pores. The doors clanged shut behind him.Zaccheo froze, then took his first lungful of free air with fists clenched and eyes shut. He absorbed the sound of birds chirping in the late-winter morning sun, listened to the distant rumble of the motorway as he'd done many nights from his prison cell.Opening his eyes, he headed towards the fifteen-foot gate. A minute later, he was outside.'Zaccheo, it's good to see you again,' Romeo said gravely, his eyes narrowing as he took him in.Zaccheo knew he looked a sight. He hadn't bothered with a razor blade or a barber's clippers in the last three months and he'd barely eaten once he'd unearthed the truth behind his incarceration. But he'd spent a lot of time in the prison gym. It'd been that or go mad with the clawing hunger for retribution. He shrugged off his friend's concern and moved to the open door.'Did you bring what I asked for?' he asked.Romeo nodded. 'Si. All three files are on the laptop.'Zaccheo slid onto the plush leather seat. Romeo slid in next to him and poured them two glasses of Italian-made cognac.'Salute,' Romeo muttered.Zaccheo took the drink without responding, threw back the amber liquid and allowed the scent of power and affluence—the tools he'd need for his plan to succeed—to wash over him.As the low hum of the luxury engine whisked him away from the place he'd been forced to call home for over a year, Zaccheo reached for the laptop.Icy rage trembled through his fingers as the Giordano Worldwide Inc. logo flickered to life. His life's work, almost decimated through another's greed and lust for power. It was only with Romeo's help that GWI hadn't gone under in the months after Zaccheo had been sent to prison for a crime he didn't commit. He drew quiet satisfaction that not only had GWI survived—thanks to Romeo—it had thrived. But his personal reputation had not.He was out now. Free to bring those culpable to justice. He didn't plan on resting until every last person responsible for attempting to destroy his life paid with the destruction of theirs.Shaking out his hand to rid it of its tremble, he hit the Open key.The information was thorough although Zaccheo knew most of its contents. For three months he'd checked and double-checked his sources, made sure every detail was nailed down tight. He exhaled at the first picture that filled his screen.Oscar Pennington III. Distant relative to the royal family. Etonian. Old, if spent, money. Very much part of the establishment. Greedy. Indiscriminate. His waning property portfolio had received a much-needed injection of capital exactly fourteen months and two weeks ago when he'd become sole owner of London's most talked about building—The Spire.Zaccheo swallowed the savage growl that rumbled from his soul. Icily calm, he flicked through pages of Pennington celebrating his revived success with galas, lavish dinner parties and polo tournaments thrown about like confetti. One picture showed him laughing with one of his two children.Sophie Pennington. Private education all the way to finishing school. Classically beautiful. Ball-breaker. She'd proven beyond a doubt that she had every intention of becoming Oscar's carbon copy.Grimly, he closed her file and moved to the last one.Eva Pennington. This time the growl couldn't be contained. Nor could he stem the renewed shaking in his hand as he clicked her file.Caramel-blonde hair tumbled down her shoulders in thick, wild waves. Dark eyebrows and lashes framed moss-green eyes, accentuated dramatically with black eyeliner. Those eyes had gripped his attention with more force than he'd been comfortable with the first time he'd looked into them. As had the full, bow-shaped lips currently curved in a smouldering smile. His screen displayed a head-and-shoulders shot, but the rest of Eva Pennington's body was imprinted indelibly on Zaccheo's mind. He didn't struggle to recall the petite, curvy shape, or that she forced herself to wear heels even though she hated them, in order to make herself taller. He certainly didn't struggle to recall her individual atrocity. He'd lain in his prison bed condemning himself for being astounded by her singular betrayal, when the failings of both his parents and his dealings with the establishment should've taught him better. He'd prided himself on reading between the lines to spot schemers and gold-diggers ten miles away. Yet he'd been fooled. The time he'd wasted on useless bitterness was the most excruciating of all; time he would gladly claw back if he could.Firming his lips, he clicked through the pages, running through her life for the past year and a half. At the final page, he froze.'How new is this last information?''I added that to the file yesterday. I thought you'd want to know,' Romeo replied.Zaccheo stared at the newspaper clipping, shock waves rolling through him. 'Si, grazie… ''Do you wish to return to the Esher estate or the penthouse?' Romeo asked.Zaccheo read the announcement again, taking in pertinent details. Pennington Manor. Eight o'clock. Three hundred guests. Followed by an intimate family dinner on Sunday at The Spire. The Spire…the building that should've been Zaccheo's greatest achievement.'The estate,' he replied. It was closer. He closed the file as Romeo instructed the driver.Relaxing against the headrest, Zaccheo tried to let the hum of the engine soothe him. But it was no use. He was far from calm. He'd have to alter his plan. Not that it mattered too much in the long run.A chain is only as strong as its weakest link. While all three Penningtons had colluded in his incarceration, this new information demanded he use a different tactic, one he'd first contemplated and abandoned. Either way, Zaccheo didn't plan to rest until all of them were stripped of what they cherished most—their wealth and affluence. He'd intended to wait a day or two to ensure he had Oscar Pennington where he wanted him before he struck. That plan was no longer viable.Bringing down the family who'd framed him for criminal negligence couldn't wait till Monday. His first order of business would be tackled tonight.Starting with the youngest member of the family—Eva Pennington. His ex-fiancée.Eva Pennington stared at the dress in her sister's hand. 'Seriously? There's no way I'm wearing that. Why didn't you tell me the clothes I left behind had been given away?''Because you said you didn't want them when you moved out. Besides, they were old and out of fashion. I had this couriered from New York this morning. It's the latest couture and on loan to us for twenty-four hours,' Sophie replied.Eva pursed her lips. 'I don't care if it was woven by ten thousand silk worms. I'm not wearing a dress that makes me look like a gold-digger and a slut. And considering the state of our finances, I'd have thought you'd be more careful what you splashed money on.' She couldn't stem her bewilderment as to why Sophie and her father blithely ignored the fact that money was extremely tight.Sophie huffed. 'This is a one-of-a-kind dress, and, unless I'm mistaken, it's the kind of dress your future husband likes his women to wear. Anyway, you'll be out of it in less than four hours, once the right photographs have been taken, and the party's over.'Eva gritted her teeth. 'Stop trying to manage me, Sophie. You're forgetting who pulled this bailout together. If I hadn't come to an agreement with Harry, we'd have been sunk come next week. As to what he likes his women to wear, if you'd bothered to speak to me first I'd have saved you the trouble of going to unnecessary expense. I dress for myself and no one else.''Speak to you first? When you and Father neglected to afford me the same courtesy before you hatched this plan behind my back?' Sophie griped.Eva's heart twisted at the blatant jealousy in her sister's voice. As if it weren't enough that the decision she'd spent the past two weeks agonising over still made her insides clench in horror. It didn't matter that the man she'd agreed to marry was her friend and she was helping him as much as he was helping her. Marriage was a step she'd rather not have taken. It was clear, however, her sister didn't see it that way. Sophie's escalating discontentment at any relationship Eva tried to forge with their father was part of the reason Eva had moved out of Pennington Manor. Not that their father was an easy man to live with. For as long as she could remember, Sophie had been possessive of their father's attention. While their mother had been alive, it'd been bearable and easier to accept that Sophie was their father's preferred child, while Eva was her mother's, despite wanting to be loved equally by both parents. After their mother's death, every interaction Eva had tried to have with their father had been met with bristling confrontation from Sophie, and indifference from their father. But, irrational as it was, it didn't stop Eva from trying to reason with the sister she'd once looked up to.'We didn't go behind your back. You were away on a business trip—''Trying to use the business degree that doesn't seem to mean anything any more. Not when you can swoop in after three years of performing tired ballads in seedy pubs to save the day,' Sophie interjected harshly.Eva hung on to her temper by a thread, but pain stung deep at the blithe dismissal of her passion. 'You know I resigned from Penningtons because Father only hired me so I could attract a suitable husband. And just because my dreams don't coincide with yours—''That's just it. You're twenty-four and still dreaming. The rest of us don't have that luxury. And we certainly don't land on our feet by clicking our fingers and having a millionaire solve all our problems.''Harry is saving all of us. And you really think I've landed on my feet by getting engaged for the second time in two years?' Eva asked.Sophie dropped the offensive dress on Eva's bed. 'To everyone who matters, this is your first engagement. The other one barely lasted five minutes. Hardly anyone knows it happened.'Hurt-laced anger swirled through her veins. 'I know it happened.''If my opinion matters around here any more, then I suggest you don't broadcast it. It's a subject best left in the past, just like the man it involved.'Pain stung deeper. 'I can't pretend it didn't happen because of what occurred afterwards.''The last thing we need right now is any hint of scandal. And I don't know why you're blaming Father for what happened when you should be thanking him for extricating you from that man before it was too late,' Sophie defended heatedly. That man.Zaccheo Giordano.Eva wasn't sure whether the ache lodged beneath her ribs came from thinking about him or from the reminder of how gullible she'd been to think he was any different from every other man who'd crossed her path. She relaxed her fists when they balled again. This was why she preferred her life away from their family home deep in the heart of Surrey. It was why her waitress colleagues knew her as Eva Penn, a hostess at Siren, the London nightclub where she also sang part-time, instead of Lady Eva Pennington, daughter of Lord Pennington. Her relationship with her father had always been difficult, but she'd never thought she'd lose her sister so completely, too.She cleared her throat. 'Sophie, this agreement with Harry wasn't supposed to undermine anything you were doing with Father to save Penningtons. There's no need to be upset or jealous. I'm not trying to take your place—''Jealous! Don't be ridiculous,' Sophie sneered, although the trace of panic in her voice made Eva's heart break. 'And you could never take my place. I'm Father's right hand, whereas you…you're nothing but—' She stopped herself and, after a few seconds, stuck her nose in the air. 'Our guests are arriving shortly. Please don't be late to your own engagement party.'Eva swallowed down her sorrow. 'I've no intention of being late. But neither do I have any intention of wearing a dress that has less material than thread holding it together.'She strode to the giant George III armoire opposite the bed, even though her earlier inspection had shown less than a fraction of the items she'd left behind when she'd moved out on her twenty-first birthday. These days she was content with her hostess's uniform when she was working or lounging in jeans and sweaters while she wrote her music on her days off. Haute couture, spa days and primping herself beautiful in order to please anyone were part of a past she'd happily left behind.Unfortunately this time there'd been no escaping. Not when she alone had been able to find the solution to saving her family. She tried in vain to squash the rising memories being back at Pennington Manor threatened to resurrect.Zaccheo was in her past, a mistake that should never have happened. A reminder that ignoring a lesson learned only led to further heartache. She sighed in relief when her hand closed on a silk wrap. The red dress would be far too revealing, a true spectacle for the three hundred guests her father had invited to gawp at. But at least the wrap would provide a little much-needed cover.Glancing at the dress again, she shuddered. She'd rather be anywhere but here, participating in this sham. But then hadn't her whole life been a sham? From parents who'd been publicly hailed as the couple to envy, but who'd fought bitterly in private until tragedy had struck in the form of her mother's cancer, to the lavish parties and expensive holidays that her father had secretly been borrowing money for, the Penningtons had been one giant sham for as long as Eva could remember.Zaccheo's entry into their lives had only escalated her father's behaviour. No, she refused to think about Zaccheo. He belonged to a chapter of her life that was firmly sealed. Tonight was about Harry Fairfield, her family's saviour, and her soon-to-be fiancé.It was also about her father's health. For that reason alone, she tried again with Sophie.'For Father's sake, I want tonight to go smoothly, so can we try to get along?'Sophie stiffened. 'If you're talking about Father's hospitalisation two weeks ago, I haven't forgotten.'Watching her father struggle to breathe with what the doctors had termed a cardiac event had terrified Eva. It'd been the catalyst that had forced her to accept Harry's proposition.'He's okay today, isn't he?' Despite her bitterness at her family's treatment of her, she couldn't help her concern for her remaining parent. Nor could she erase the secret yearning that the different version of the father she'd connected with very briefly after her mother's death, the one who wasn't an excess-loving megalomaniac who treated her as if she was an irritating inconvenience, hadn't been a figment of her imagination.'He will be, once we get rid of the creditors threatening us with bankruptcy.'Eva exhaled. There was no backing out; no secretly hoping that some other solution would present itself and save her from the sacrifice she was making. All avenues had been thoroughly explored—Eva had demanded to see the Pennington books herself and spent a day with the company's accountants to verify that they were indeed in dire straits. Her father's rash acquisition of The Spire had stretched the company to breaking point. Harry Fairfield was their last hope. She unzipped the red dress, resisting the urge to crush it into a wrinkled pulp.

By dropsydot Maya Blake always writes wonderful stories , however she has written such an excellent story that you will not want to put it down till the end. She writes about Zaccheo Giordano who is imprisoned for something he didn't do but was set up by Oscar Pennington the father of Eva who he was briefly engaged to. When he is released he has revenge on his mind and the first order of business is breaking up Eva's engagement party in a spectacular way. I am not giving away any more of this story it has to be read by all romance readers. It is an amazing story that has everything and more that us romance lovers want and then a dose of more. Even her secondary character are wonderful, how she deals with family issues and the darkness that Zaccheo feels rules his life. I couldn't wait to see what would happen but also hated for the end. A KEEPER . I am anxiously awaiting her next book which is about a secondary character Romeo and maybe if we are lucky Zaccheo and Eva will make an appearance. What a fantastic book.......

Then in the middle I found it to be predictable when the guy gets the girl and she rebels . I really like the way Maya writes and i find most of her books just home runs even grand slams but this one wasn't there and i am hoping it is the introduction to a character whose shows up briefly in this book. His name is Romeo and he is a good person and seems to be nice so I hope in one of the next books it is about Romeo. This book was a 3 base run!

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Really a 2 Star By misslavonne I called this book "Full of surprises" because I was so surprised that the man still wanted the girl after she rejected him for something he didn't do. And then she had the nerve to tell him she suspected he was innocent in the beginning of his years in prison. She never visited and she never searched for the truth to free him. "Dark" because all I had were dark thoughts about the woman for her nerve! "Slow" because she was slow to own up to the fact that she was WRONG! for treating her fiancé the way she did and "complex" because you just don't understand how someone who is supposed to care for another person would do them that way; it just doesn't add up. This book really deserves 2 stars, but I feel slightly generous.

Felix Rossini is a man with a thousand enemies. Framed for murder, hunted by Mirenze's protectors as well as the criminal underworld, he struggles to survive and fight back against the conspiracy that has marked him for death. A conspiracy of another kind is brewing across the ocean, as the corrupt aristocracy draws Livia Serafini’s oldest friends into a plot to destroy her. If she can’t find a way to overcome the occult infection spreading through her veins, they may not have to. And in the shadows, the Owl prepares to wage bloody war against the most dangerous foe of all -- her own coven -- as she leads her disciples in a quest to recover a deadly relic. It's a showdown that will end where it all began: in the frozen hell of Winter's Reach, under a rain of fire. From a rebel uprising in the west, to a broken crusade in the east, the dominoes fall one by one. Where they land will determine the fate of an empire.

Terms of Surrender (The Revanche Cycle Book 3), by Craig Schaefer

About the Author Craig Schaefer's books have taken readers to the seamy edge of a criminal underworld drenched in shadow (the Daniel Faust series), to a world torn by war, poison and witchcraft (the Revanche Cycle), and -- beginning this winter -- across a modern America mired in occult mysteries and a conspiracy of lies (the forthcoming Harmony Black series). Despite this, people say he's strangely normal. Suspiciously normal, in fact. Schaefer lives in Illinois with a small retinue of cats, all of whom try to interrupt his writing schedule and/or kill him on a regular basis. He practices sleight of hand in his spare time, though he's not very good at it. His home on the Web is www.craigschaeferbooks.com.

I know it's kind of new, but Craig Schaefer is hardly an unknown author and the Revanche Cycle is in many ways even better than his better known Daniel Faust series. I guess it's a genre thing. I'm going to go out on a limb and say this is still urban fantasy, but the "urbs" in question happen to be in the Renaissance instead of the present so that probably makes a big difference. Still, there's magic - the witches in this story are unlike any you've seen before - plus an intricate web of relationships between characters/factions to untangle. Schaefer's wit and skill with a perfect phrase are still there. It's a bit like Game of Thrones with more intelligent characters, minus some of the gore and sex, but that description hardly does it justice. This is its own thing, worth reading on its own merits. Can't wait for more.

By MelHay Pope Livia looks to return home and unseat Carl as Pope, but will people accept her? Her witchy deeds to protect her Brown Cloaks and herself have been seen as a grace from the Gardener, but what if they knew the truth. Felix is hunted by all sides of the law and finds a new ally against his wife and her partner, but he has to stay alive to clear his name and leave to find his love, Renata. But first he'll take care of Aita and Lodovico so he and Renata won't be hunted. The Empire has pulled all but 1/3 of his army from Belle Terre to fight in the desert, a Crusade the Emperor is determined to fight. The Terrai take advantage of the movement and attack to take back their own. Owl finds trouble in her coven, and is more determined to take over as the Mother witch. All need a strong weapon to win the battles before them, that aren't looking good. A few find the weapons in them or around them. Others know of one that was hidden away years ago, one that was to powerful to use then. But now.... it may be able to be handled. But who will get to it first?Susannah has a magnificent talent in the way she holds suspense and my interest in her voice. From the first words of this story, she has gripped my attention and pulled me in. I don't know if I can express how much I love Susannah's work in this series. I love listening to Susannah as she voices each character giving them an individual sound and feel. They all are written with vastly different personalities, and Susannah brings that alive for us.Everything is as we left it at the end of Instruments of Control. In turmoil. I love how the story starts right where we left off. There is no rehashing of what has happened. But Craig drops reminders as the characters think or talk of where they are going or to do next, easily bringing past events to mind.We get to see the story from a few different POV's, but it's extremely easy to follow who's who. In this world, we need all POV's we can be given as there is so many different sides that are touched with the waves of change. These characters each have their own agenda in life, their own person they are looking to unseat or kill. By this book, they all have dark agendas they are fighting for. It's a beautiful thing! All their lives interlace with one another and actions against one affects many more, whether for good or bad is yet to be determined. We get deeper into the witch life with Nessa. We see an ages old tradition of a Coven Knight brought back and how the coven works, or I should say is working and should be working in Nessa's eyes. We see rituals performed and the witch side of the story come to light here. I am surprised to see (and dare I think) Nessa growing fond of Mari and who she's created her to be.Livia, I want to applaud her and say, You go girl! She's learned a lot and some of it dire, but she's a strong woman and will do well for all while she's around. There is trouble stewing with the crusade in the desert, and crusaders trying to get there. All ties back to Lodovico Marchetti and what his plans are. These plans affect so many people, and people are starting to get a glimpse of what he's doing. But what is his end game? What is Lodovico really working toward?Felix is reminded what he's fighting for. Love. For his love and safety of his love, Renata. He works to remain the man he is for Renata, but life pushes in other ways the longer he stays in Mirenze. Renata has found a new strength in herself. Renata fights through physical battles in the previous book and this one. But now, she sees she can fight for what she wants. And she's ready to do just that. The biggest thing I've been waiting for, what's in the alum mines at Winter's Reach that the witches have been hiding. Yes. We learn what it is! What I learn of it does not let down. It's told in a way that it's as terrible as I had hoped. The growth and fall of all these characters, WOW! There was so much thought put into this world, characters, internal and external battles and it shows. Excellent job!Who is on the good side? Um... I don't know if there's a good side anymore. All have blurred the line between right and wrong. All just want what they want, whether it's peace to live with a loved one, money, power, control, or all these things.Good grief! I am captured by Craig's writing and Susannah's vocal talent. What a dynamic duo this is! Craig seamlessly crafts a world where waves of change ripple through all the classes and divisions of the world, and we see the splashes it makes in each persons plans to better themselves. Craig does not leave us wanting, but keeps us dreading when we have to put the book down. We get all the masterful schemes, partnerships, fights, and deaths.I don't know if it's possible to love this series any more. With each book, I fall more and more for this world and characters with the turmoil they live through.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Intriguing and full of well developed characters. By Spa Lady Still enjoying this story and waiting for the last book. I'd love it more with a list of characters in the back to refer to as I get a bit lost in all the different plot lines if I set the book down for a few days. The story line is interesting and complex enough that I don't get tired of reading it, but sometimes authors do a little too much jumping around for my taste. This happens when you have 4 or 5 different story lines coming together....slowly to what I hope is a cohesive ending.Recommend reading this series.

It felt like the old books and was probably my favorite arch. I can't wait for the new arch, but I do hope they make more presequels like this. Erin hunter never fails me.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Best Book of The Series! By Brambletalon // Jessica Loved this book! I borrowed it from the library, and I'm in the middle of re-reading it. I really want to get a copy for myself seeing that it has a poster. This is the best book of the series, but I'm really sad that **Spoiler Alert** Gray Wing died at the end. Turtle Tail said it was his kits' destiny to only know him as a memory. Sounds ominus, eh? My eyes actually started watering, and I NEVER cry. Never. The last sentence hit me hardest- "I have traveled so far and loved so much, and yet I am still following the Sun Trail, heading for my new hunting grounds."I can't wait for The Apprentice's Quest to come out. The excerpt at the end was pretty cool, but ya know, it didn't really give away much. I saw on the wiki that the 2nd book of VOS is called The Lost Clan. //GASP Is SkyClan coming to the lake or something?

Nutrition, environmental impact, ethics, sustainability—it seems like there's no end to the factors we must consider when we think about our food. At the center of the dietary storm is animal-based agriculture. Was your beef factory-farmed or pasture-raised? Did your chicken free range, or was it raised in a battery cage? Have you, in short, met your meat?

Most efforts to unravel the complexities of the production and consumption of animal protein tend to pit meat eaters and vegetarians against each other. The Ethical Meat Handbook seeks a middle ground, arguing that by assuming full responsibility for the food on our fork, and more importantly, the route by which it gets there, animals can be an optimal source of food, fiber, and environmental management. This hands-on, practical guide covers:

Integrating animals into your garden or homestead Basic butchery: whole animal, primals, subprimals, and end-cuts, including safety and knife skills Charcuterie: history, general science and math principles, tooling up Culinary highlights: getting creative, preparing sauces, ferments, difficult cuts, and extras

Eating diversely may be the most revolutionary and proactive action we can take to ensure the sustainability of our food system. The Ethical Meat Handbook challenges us to take a hard look at our individual dietary choices, increase our self-reliance and at the same time enjoy delicious food that benefits our health and our planet.

Meredith Leigh is a food and farming specialist who has worked as a butcher, chef, teacher, and homesteader, all in search of realistic solutions for sustainable food.

Review This book is practical, yes, but it’s also deeply personal. Meredith Leigh will teach you how to raise animals, butcher them, and cook and cure their meat. Even better, she explains what it means and why it matters, and her passion is infectious. 2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. this book is an excellent how-to guide for proper butchering By Katherine Mills This is a warmly written narrative of living closely with animals and the food they provide for our nourishment. Ethical Meat is a guide for anyone involved in home charcuterie and meat preparation - its a well written, thoroughly researched book that conveys the author's sincere search for meat preparation done right. From a technical standpoint, this book is an excellent how-to guide for proper butchering. Full of GREAT recipes, this is one book worth having on the kitchen shelf.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Absolute Must Have! By Lee Ann Smith This book is so much more than I expected! It's a literary treasure and true pleasure to read. I'm not remotely a good cook but I learned so much about how to prepare amazing food, why sustainable techniques are vital to our health and economy, and just what these confusing labels mean in the market. It's changed my whole paradigm about how I put food on my table. An absolute must have for the conscientious cook plus step by step instructions for the kitchen dummy. Love it!!!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. An amazing and provocative read By S Morrison An amazing and provocative read. While Meredith Leigh has provided us with wonderful recipes, and with articulate and concise instructions on the essential basics of home butchery, charcuterie, and fermentation, her goal is something beyond typical cookbook/how-to instructions. The Ethical Meat Handbook is an insightful distillation of her hard-won philosophy regarding real food, community, farming, and the importance of connection. It is a passionate and thoughtful exploration of our ability to make a difference with our choices. It is a breakdown of the profound failings of our modern animal agricultural practices, and a guidebook to affecting change in these systems through our personal consumption. Greatest of all, it is a rumination on life, love, animals, farming, cooking, and mothering - and being mindful of all those things in the betterment of ourselves and our community.A must have if you are serious about good, delicious food! And, serious about making more thoughtful decisions regarding where that food comes from and who you pay for it.

Navy SEAL Odin Byrne believes in two things, the SEAL code of honor and the ability of his Team. When he loses one of his brothers-in-arms, he loses a part of himself. Starting afresh with his Team and back home in Boston, Odin has only one focus, his uncle Declan’s security and detective agency, ‘The Gods of Wrath.’ A new team member is the last thing Odin wants, especially an ex-con who is hot as hell and mouthy to boot. Fighting for control of his agency, his heart, and his damn hormones, isn’t easy. When a new case threatens those closest to him, Odin must work with his adversary to bring a murderer to justice. Simple, apart from the memory of his lips on hers, and that one hot night. Jasmine McCarthy is starting a new life in Boston. After three years in an Irish prison for a crime committed by her ex-husband, she craves a new start, a new chance. When her friend Declan Byrne gifts her a part of his agency, Jasmine see it as her duty to join the team and follow his wishes, regardless of the opinion of her formidable new boss, Odin Byrne. The pig-head arrogant Ex-SEAL would be a lot easier to ignore, if she hadn’t already had a taste. Jasmine and Odin want nothing more than to stay the hell away from each other, if only chemistry and fate would play ball…

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Great first half By Foxylutely Books! This is the first in the new series The Gods Of Wrath Security Agency. Looking at the hot cover and the enticing blurb, this fell into the realms of an ‘I must read this NOW!’ chant. The first half of the book definitely delivered that and it was engrossing getting to know all about the ex-SEALS now set up in a security business back home in Boston. Odin being the leader and one hot alpha, was an easy character to fall for. Jasmine was also a great character with her sassy comebacks and her take life by the reigns and ride it attitude was a positive after all that she had been put through by her ex in Ireland. The sexy one night hook up set up the scene for the rampant and raunchy kink to come but then something happens and after that the book kind of fell flat for me.The chemistry and intensity from the first part was lost and it became harder to feel the connection to the pairing thereafter which was a darn shame indeed. The back story also seemed to take too much focus away from the romance element and overall lead to the story feeling rushed, clunky and a lot of ‘add ons’Overall I loved the start, the intention of this story and with a little more focus and intent this would easily be a five star as the first half was for me but the latter half just left me a little disappointed. I would still like to go on and read the next book to see if the missing links were filled in (such as what was revealed from Ireland after she was in Boston – what happened to clear her name and why was she still using an alias?)Anyhow as I say loved the first half, second half not so much so overall a three and a half star read for me.

The large in stature as well as personality, hunk of metal is Lieutenant commanding officer in charge of squad 3, Triton platoon, SEAL team 3 until the group of men who trusts dearly and considers a family, create the Gods of Wrath Security Agency.Jasmine is a honest woman who got tied into the wrong family, after serving time she has the help of someone who creates her new identity and helps keep her past there. But Without his help, and a push for her to be involved in the Agency a one night stand becomes so much more...Excerpt:My heart wants something from her, something long forgotten, a feeling I haven't felt since my youth. A feeling of hopeful belonging. I would kill to protect her, I would kill to possess her...Can she prove her worth when Odin and the team discover Jasmines past? Can she ever be a part of the agency and the tight knit group?Excerpt:You know this is not ending here, J, not a damn chance this is ending here. This is just the beginning. They way Odin and Jasmine bounce off one another is brilliant and their chemistry more so! The clever wit and humour throughout had me gasping for air in amongst my fits of giggles and also fearing for what lay ahead for the pair who have such major challenges trusting. But their relationship is what made this book for me.Excerpt:The real criminals of society wear suits and ties. I promised myself there and then that I'd never fall for another man, never trust another one either. There really is something for everyone from the action packed work of the agency to the seriously hot scenes that will leave you wanting more.Excerpt:Jasmine McCarthy is my own private cyclone, she rocks me off my feet and leaves me searching for s place to hide from the force of my feelings for her.As my first read from Michelle McLoughney I was astounded at the humour alongside some seriously tough scenes wishing happiness for the two lead characters. And boy do they take you on a journey. Michelle's writing blew me away with her level of attention detail and plain beauty despite the pair having both seen such horror. It has to be one of my favourite reads of 2016 so far!Final excerpt:"Sometimes you miss what's in front of you because you fight the feelings, feelings you think you don't deserve. I don't want to miss what's in front of me. Some days you just have to put your mistakes away for a while and let good things happen. You have to read this book! Next in the series is Trig and I can't wait to get my hand on him ;)

Here is a magnificent collection of essays provided to us at a sublimely lost cost due to technology and will probably not be read because of all the techno-noise out there. This collection can broadly broken down into two main areas, those that are fairly topical and the reader will have to search the internet to appreciate certain references and those that are more theoretical.Somewhere between the Edwardians and the Modernists, Chesterton's style is music to the reader's ears. Clear, concise, at times humorous, and certainly opinionated this will give the reader a glimpse into the attitudes of the past and a window into the future. It is a must read for any student of modern English or modern topical mores.

A riveting true account of gold rush fever in mid-nineteenth-century America, rich with the thrilling exploits of daring fortune seekers and dangerous outlaws America was never the same after January 24, 1848. It was on that day that a carpenter named James Marshall discovered a tiny nugget of gold while building a sawmill at Sutter’s Fort, just east of Sacramento, California. Marshall’s find ignited a fever the nation had never known before, drawing people from all over the country to the West Coast with high hopes of getting rich quick. Over the next six years, three hundred thousand prospectors raced to the California gold fields to make their fortunes, leaving their lands and families behind in order to chase a dream of easy wealth, but all too often encountering a reality of lawlessness, disease, cruelty, and death.   A former columnist for the New York Times, author Fred Rosen takes readers back to the seminal moment when the American dream exploded. Chock full of fascinating details, unforgettable characters, and shocking real-life events, the captivating true story of the California gold rush brings an era of unparalleled change to breathtaking life. Rosen’s enthralling history of the gold rush of 1848 demonstrates how this golden ideal was supplanted by a culture of selfishness and greed that endures in America to this very day.

Whenever the country acquired new real estate, or even before it acquired it, it always seemed like gold was discovered. That would set off a mad rush of what were otherwise sane and rational people. Eureka, another untamed and unsettled part of the country was now full of “Americans”.=== The Good Stuff ===* Fred Rosen is an honest writer, and captures both the good and the bad of the gold rushes. He mostly concentrates on California of the late 1840’s and early 1850’s, but makes brief mention of other strikes. Rosen spends some time capturing the good sides of a gold rush, namely increased settlement of remote areas, new found wealth, and a growth in commerce and trade. But Rosen also shows the darker side. The gold rush tore apart families, destroyed pristine environments, brought unsavory characters and crime, and in general, brought more hard work and misery than gold to the average prospector.* The author writes in an easy-to-read style, and kept the narrative moving. He introduces the reader to some well-known characters, such as John Sutter and the James Brothers, but also tells the story of some lesser-known and more typical prospectors. He captures their hard work, misery, occasional success, and the effects these men had on the lands they settled into.* As part of the story, Rosen also relates the book to life in the United States during the times. During the 1850’s, the US was growing rapidly, both in area and population, was becoming a world power, and was itself getting tied up in knots over slavery. All of these events, and many others, had an effect on, and were affected by, the gold rush.* One of the more interesting parts of the narrative was the journey from the cities of the east coast to the gold fields of California. There were three major routes, all of them having tradeoffs in terms of difficulty, expense and time. It is difficult to remember that the journey now requires a few hours of time and the equivalent of a fraction of an ounce of gold.=== The Not-So-Good Stuff ===* In some ways, Rosen gets bogged down in peripheral events. I was hoping for more details on the gold rush itself-the economics of prospecting, the effect on the world economy of the gold strikes, how it affected the US. Instead, the author devotes time to Sherman’s march through Georgia, the James Brothers and other ancillary issues.* I had also hoped for a look at how the gold rush affected modern California. Would the state have grown as fast? Would the state have been different if settled by more conventional pioneers rather than get-rich quick adventurers?=== Summary ===* I enjoyed the book, and did learn a bit about this fascinating time in American History. I did get a feel for life in the American River region of California, and how a man trying to build a sawmill changed history. There were areas of the book that I would have like to see emphasized and skipped over, but all-in-all it was a worthwhile read.=== Disclaimer ===I was able to read an advanced proof through the courtesy of the publisher and NetGalley.

Brown Unlike other gold rushes in world history, the California 49ers rushed to a place filled with tremendous economic opportunity beyond mining. Moreover it occurred shortly after the Mexican-American War in which the United States obtained New Mexico and California from Mexico, and at the beginning of the "manifest destiny" phase of US westward expansion. For these reasons, the California Gold Rush transformed the country in the decade before the Civil War.This book tells that story in a series of vignettes about a few key individuals in the Gold Rush, plus a lot of less key folks who were famous for other reasons, like Robert James (father of Frank and Jesse), James Reed (leader of the cannablistic Donner party) and Joseph Smith (founder of the Mormon Church). This gives considerable insight into the effect of the Gold Rush on the entire country, but means there is limited space for discussing the actual discovery, mining and aftermath. The story is surprisingly tame given how colorful the material is and the author's skill with sensational material in most of his other books. It's a pleasant and informative history, but it will not keep you at the edge of your seat. It also gives little feel for what life was actually like at the time. The place descriptions are detailed and vibrant, and there is a lot of primary material quoted from letters and newspapers, but the book does not take the reader back in time. If you ignore the giant one-word title with exclamation point and look only at the subtitle, you'll get a better idea of what the book is like.Overall, this is an competent journalistic account of the 49ers and their place in US history that is mildly entertaining rather than thrilling or incisive.

Excellent History of the California Gold Rush By Connie Fischer When the California Gold Rush began in 1848, people from all over the world came to the foothills of the Sierra Nevada to seek their fortune. Very few actually succeeded. This book documents many historical facts. Some of which I will touch on here.Colonel John Sutter built Sutter’s Fort which served as a piece of civilization in the middle of the Gold Rush wilderness area. An enthusiastic entrepreneur, Sutter offered stores, hotels, and places to eat for weary travelers. When gold was found by Sutter’s Mill, they tried to keep it secret but, of course, it leaked out.James Marshall arrived at the fort possessing the rate talent of being a wheel right and worked with Sutter. Even though Marshall had discover gold in January 1848 in California, it had already been discovered in North Carolina and Georgia in the 1820’s and 1839, respectively. The Donnor Party and its horrors were a group of people headed for the Gold Rush in their determined trek through hazardous snow. The start of the Mormon Church began during this time period. They blazed the trail that the gold seekers would soon follow upon.McNeil’s Travels was printed in 1849 and became one of the best accounts of what it took to join the Gold Rush and was available nationally and internationally. People in this group were known as the 49ers but, sadly, many succumbed to cholera.Convicts from Australia and the penal colonies of Great Britain began arriving and crime became rampant. In response, a Vigilante Committee was formed and resolutions passed that those caught thieving would get a swift and fair trial. If found guilty, they would be hanged. That got their attention and soon crime began to abate. The California Rangers were formed to provide some sort of law and order.Placerville, the center of the Gold Rush became known as Hangtown. Slavery was not tolerated in the Gold Rush area. Most blacks were well liked and respected but the same was not true of the Chinese mostly because they were simply hard workers. The Mexicans were hated even more. Cholera was rampant in the mining camps due to a lack of any sewage system.Of those people who left for the Gold Rush, one in four never made it back, thus making it a 25 percent mortality rate. Those of you with an interest or fascination with the Gold Rush, I highly recommend this historical documentation.
