In her first novel since The One and Only Ivan, winner of the Newbery Medal, Katherine Applegate delivers an unforgettable and magical story about family, friendship, and resilience.

Jackson and his family have fallen on hard times. There's no more money for rent. And not much for food, either. His parents, his little sister, and their dog may have to live in their minivan. Again.

Crenshaw is a cat. He's large, he's outspoken, and he's imaginary. He has come back into Jackson's life to help him. But is an imaginary friend enough to save this family from losing everything?

Beloved author Katherine Applegate proves in unexpected ways that friends matter, whether real or imaginary.

Crenshaw, by Katherine Applegate

From School Library Journal Gr 4–6—In her first novel since the Newbery-winning The One and Only Ivan (HarperCollins, 2012), Applegate tells the story of a 10-year-old boy whose imaginary friend helps him cope with a family crisis. Jackson, his parents, and his five-year-old sister once again are staring down the barrel of an impending eviction notice. What frustrates Jackson isn't just the lack of money: it's his artistically minded parents' tendency to gloss over their woes with humor and cheer rather than acknowledging the reality of their situation. It's understandably a shock to Jackson when an old friend reappears: Crenshaw, a seven-foot-tall talking cat, who first came into his life several years ago when the boy and his family were living out of their car shortly after his father was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. Skeptical Jackson tries to dismiss Crenshaw as a figment of his imagination, but the cat's words of wisdom start to resonate with him. Employing sparse but elegant prose, Applegate has crafted an authentic protagonist whose self-possession and maturity conceal relatable vulnerability and fears. While sardonic Crenshaw may not be the warm and cuddly imaginary friend readers are expecting, he's the companion that Jackson truly needs as he begins to realize that he doesn't need to carry the weight of the world upon his shoulders. Though the ending wraps up a shade too neatly, overall, children will appreciate this heartbreaking novel. VERDICT A compelling and unflinchingly honest treatment of a difficult topic.—Mahnaz Dar, School Library Journal

Review

“This accessible and moving novel demonstrates how the creative resilience of a child's mind can soften difficult situations, while exploring the intersection of imagination and truth.” ―Publishers Weekly, starred review

“The tone is warm and, occasionally, quirkily funny, but it doesn't sugarcoat the effects of hunger and vulnerability. This novel adds a middle-grade perspective to the literature of imaginary friends and paints a convincing and compassionate portrait of a social class―the working poor―underrepresented in children's books.” ―The Horn Book, starred review

About the Author Katherine Applegate is the author of the bestselling Animorphs series, and the novels Home of the Brave and The One and Only Ivan, winner of the 2013 Newbery Medal. She lives with her husband, author Michael Grant, and their two children in Northern California.

88 of 91 people found the following review helpful. an enjoyable read, despite a dark topic (and not too scary) By Amazon Customer This book does a phenomenal job of being engaging and fun despite material that could so-easily delve into dark and disturbing. The author walks that precise line of creating empathy without creating too much distress for young readers. I have no qualms letting my 10-year-old or even 8-year-old read this one. It *does* talk about homelessness and its side effects for a young child, but somehow the imaginary friend (who's introduced in the first line as a surfboarding cat who's holding an umbrella) makes things lighthearted and safe, even while you recognize that he's a sign of emotional distress.FOR PARENTS - CONTAINS SPOILERSIf your child is sensitive (like mine are), it may help to know that the imaginary friend is silly enough to break up the tension on a regular basis. Many of the most-difficult moments of the book happen in the past (from the previous time this boy had to live in the van with his family and their puppy for 14 weeks), so you know they eventually made it out. And although he mentions having seen his dad cry (the only time he had seen such a thing), most of the darker moments focus on things like the van being smelly, or how he didn't like his younger sister kicking him in her sleep (so he decorated a cardboard panel to put in between them). There's a lot of generosity/kindness from strangers, which helps a lot even though they *were* still living in a van, which keeps you empathizing with them but not spiraling into despair. There are also a couple of places where he says "I know other people have it much, much worse, but I still hate this," which again triggers empathy and understanding, without minimizing what anyone has to go through... making you aware of those darker stories, but not taking you into them. Finally, fortunately, at the end of this novel, the family finds a temporary place to stay (an old, run-down, one-room apartment) so again it's clearly not sunshine and roses, but hopeful. The author truly does a masterful job of introducing this difficult topic in a way that creates empathy while being enjoyable and (for most kids) non-traumatizing.

Crenshaw isn't real 9 year old Jackson realizes this. Crenshaw himself realizes this. Crenshaw was Jackson's imaginary playmate when he was five, and four years later he's back. This is disturbing because Jackson is now too old to have an imaginary playmate. However, as it turns out, he does need one. This is a surprisingly serious juvenile novel. It deals with the quite serious theme of homeless living. You can't get much more serious than that. However, this is hardly a depressing book. There's lots of humor in it. However, it's not a light read. The author makes Jackson's life seem quite real. He, his sister, and his parents are all very real characters. Oddly, so is Crenshaw. The writer's crowning achievement is making Crenshaw real, but not real.On one hand, this is pretty heavy stuff for the young reader to handle. On the other hand, it has a lot of entertainment value. I recommend it strongly for kids and even for parents.

He prides himself on his scientist-like thinking, and that's what he wants to be when he grows up--a scientist. But, like most kids in a family with some serious problems, he has limited time to think about his future. His dad was once a successful construction worker who was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, and could only take part-time jobs after that time. His mother was once a middle-school music teacher, until her job was eliminated, and she then started working up to three part-time jobs at a time. Unfortunately, all that part-time work never seemed to add up to full-time wages, and, once again, Jackson's family was looking at the possibility of having to live in their van.Living in the van didn't seem that bad to Jackson the summer before he entered second grade, but he could not fathom doing so again the summer before he was starting fifth grade. That's when Crenshaw returned. Crenshaw was there the first time the family became homeless, and he was back the second time it looked like homelessness was approaching. Crenshaw was Jackson's imaginary friend, and he was one big cat. Like Jackson, he also wasn't particularly sentimental and liked to stick to facts. Unlike Jackson, who feared he was beginning to lose it, Crenshaw had no problem with the existence of an imaginary friend, even for a boy going into fifth grade. So this story goes . . . and it is an excellent example of a writer dealing with a major social issue without being too heavy-handed. For some, the story will seem magical. For others, it won't seem magical enough. For example, at times, Crenshaw seems more like a therapist explaining why imaginary friends exist, instead of seeming like an imaginary friend created by a young boy. Yet, maybe that's the type of imaginary friend a budding scientist would create in his mind. Jackson also has a friend named Marisol who wants to be a scientist when she grows up. The author is nicely demonstrating with her character the fact that having just one real friend can make all the difference in the world, to a child heading towards an uncertain time in his or her life. (Obviously, having an unreal friend can help, too. )Uncertainty. Legions of homeless children or those being threatened by homelessness are dealing with uncertainties every minute of their lives. Crenshaw may be a book that helps those children. It also may be a book that will help children who never have to face the possibility of homelessness understand better those who do. Crenshaw is a cat. A big cat. There is no animal that has better survival skills or instincts. This is not a particularly sentimental story. It's also not a story that will scare children . . . at least not too much. The ending is one of hope, but not hope of an unrealistic type. Yet, the story shows magic can exist . . . even in the mind of a young scientist . . . and can help make a difficult time less difficult. So can love.

Total Disclosure: I worked with and was a friend of Randy Morgenson -- the subject of this book -- for over 25 years; I was also interviewed for the book (endlessly, it seemed). For all that, when I read this (a manuscript copy), I found it compelling. I mean, I lived the whole thing pretty intimately, but kept wondering "hmm, I wonder what happens next?"A number of the reviews emphasize Randy's apparently troubled life. That's kind of true, but I notice one of the reviewers calls it a love story -- a love for the land. And I think that's closer to it. It's also one of the few honest descriptions of the exciting, glamorous life of a backcountry ranger (the fast cars, alluring women, investment strategies...)I've run across (Jordan Fischer-Smith's "Nature Noir", though not about backcountry rangers, is the other excellent account of rangering).Anyway, if you're a hiker or one of those folks who always wanted to be a backcountry ranger, this is the book to read. Maybe a cautionary tale but, really, it's all about not being happy anywhere else.George

96 of 98 people found the following review helpful. Backcountry Ranger By Scott M. Kruse I was a backcountry ranger in the High Sierra and Rocky Mountains for many years with both the Natl Park Service and USDA-Forest Service. This is a compelling book because it captures the culture, values, accomplishments and limitations of living a backcountry life. "Wilderness teaches a person the answers to questions that we have not yet learned how to ask" (photographer Nancy Newhall). To paraphrase Isaac Walton's "The Compleate Angler" (1650), "time spent in mountains will not be counted against the rest of your life."Randy was well known and admired because he lived a backcountry life and lived it well. He modeled first-hand knowledge and care and respect for wild ecosystems. Being a backcountry ranger immerses you in rarified air and light, extends the useable light of every day, winter and summer and in many ways is living a religious experience, a special calling. This sets you apart from the every day world and makes it hard on relationships, personal and professional. Each day is a wealth of learning opportunities that teaches you to not take life and people for granted.Randy lived with the understanding of Sierra Nevada mountaineer Norman Clyde, "the mountains will always be there tomorrow, make sure you can say the same." Randy relished every day with Clyde's thought in mind. We are all envious of Randy, he lived a full life (including the ups and downs) doing what he loved and doing it well.As with Alsup's (2001) "Missing in the Minarets" the search for Walter A. Starr, Jr., in 1933, "The Last Season," immerses you in the culture, shortcomings, accomplishments and day-to-day activities of Sequoia-Kings Canyon Natl Park backcountry. Everyone involved is passionate. A large, long-term investment of physical and emotional energy and effort commands a high price. The rewards are outside of ordinary life and difficult to put into words. Those who look in from the "outside" do not always understand when a life is cut short. The rewards are not monetary and "University of the Wilderness" curricula is not always valued or recognized in an urban culture. Rewards are emphemeral and are often taken away just as quickly as they are offered. We are privileged to have known Randy Morgenson.

46 of 48 people found the following review helpful. A Community Runs Through It By Ross Flaven This is a book I staggered through in a few days: here is an emotionally significant, compelling biography of a contemporary man, Randy Morgenson, and the people about him that contributed to and helped define his humanness. Eric Blehm's spyglass peek into Randy's life is both tense and tender and - while a major search and rescue effort to find Randy after he is reported missing in the Sierra backcountry is woven throughout the book - it is about our relationships and community with others and nature. We are all without purity; Randy Morgenson models his humanity cloaked in honesty, deceit, heroics, compassion, anger, frustration, and love. He has become a backcountry Ranger in the Sierra Nevada, both lifeline and escape from and for reality. He's a conflicted man in the end, but still a person I would have cherished knowing and appreciating firsthand.Like Randy Morgenson, I was fortunate to grow up in a family that spent summers in the Sierra. My father was a pioneering desert rat and Sierra maven; he refused to let his boys swim in fresh water sources, training us instead to look for dead ponds, without inlet or outlet. As young children, we learned it was noble (or so we thought then) to carry out someone's carelessly or purposefully discarded trash.By the time of my first extended backpack trip some 45 years ago, the Sierra had captured my soul and given me in return a sense of strength, confidence, quiet, and purpose. Unlike Randy, my life spun away from the Sierra except for as many backpack and camping trips I could manage. But, a piece of me always is fixed to the smell of these mountains, for it is my lifeline as well. This book is not just about Randy Morgenson. Like each of us, our stories involve a community of people. Randy's community is his fellow backcountry Rangers, his parents, his wife Judi, and the solitude of the Sierra. Like each of us, he had opportunities, he had choices. While Randy is thematic, the book acknowledges - with both descriptive and caring narrative - the individuals who together give us a wilderness experience mostly free from city trauma, exploitation, and ourselves."The Last Season" will certainly appeal to those who have experienced the Sierra, whether Yosemite, a piece of the John Muir, or simply Rock Creek. The text is detailed, nicely balanced, and presents Randy Morgenson as a man who lived a life that I care about when it is finished. Those who have not been to the Sierra, or met or talked with the many dedicated men and women who help define and protect our diminishing wilderness areas, will also gain with a reading of this book: Eric Blehm has skillfully captured the intensity, drama, and emotional storm not only of a major Sierra search and rescue operation, but also the man who triggered it.

One of the more mysterious is the Panda. But actually the ones you are mostly familiar with is the giant panda. There is a second species called the lesser, it is discussed briefly, but is disappointing when compared to the Greater Panda. This is a place to teach your child about the Panda - both types. The pictures offer great insights into both species and a reference about the main facts of Panda.

PASS THE LEED GREEN ASSOCIATE EXAM WITH FLYING COLORS!

The LEED Green Associate V4 Exam Complete Study Guide aims to provide deep insight into the principles of green building; and helps the reader to learn, rather than to memorize the essential information for the exam. Thus, this approach equips candidates to successfully pass the LEED Green Associate exam with flying colors in order to actively apply green building and LEED principles in real life.

This book is the only resource a candidate needs, in order to successfully pass the exam. As LEED v4 is quite different in comparison to the former versions, the book was entirely re-written; thus, it was not updated from a previous edition. All of the chapters contain guidance on the aspects that require extensive attention, while the book points out the finer details to focus on for the exam purposes. It does not matter how much time passes after taking the exam, as learning the real reasons behind the green building and LEED principles through observation will help to consolidate this information concisely.

Even though the LEED Green Associate exams are sometimes referred to as conceptual exams, in reality the exam goes well beyond that. Without diving into the LEED prerequisites and credits, a candidate cannot ever guarantee passing the test; as a result, the book covers the core concepts of each LEED credit category, and then looks at the LEED prerequisites and credits to demonstrate how those green building concepts turn into real projects with LEED requirements.

  • Pass the LEED Green Associate exam with flying colors!
  • Thoroughly understand and apply the green building principles for life, and retain all the information you have learned
  • Apply the green building and LEED principles in real life
  • Know all the important things to consider during the exam beforehand
  • The book is also recommended for students, professionals, and anyone who has not chosen to take an LEED professional exam, but nonetheless retains a strong interest in LEED and green buildings.

By :) Okay, so I wanted to write a GREAT review for those who plan to take the LEED green associate exam, and are looking for a great study guide. This is what this book is. HOWEVER, I think its important to let you know a few things if you wanted to purchase this (and that I wish I had known before buying it):1. There's lots of typos. If a published book has this many, it needs to be revised.2. While Koralturk explains sustainable ideas in a very comprehensive and simple way, some of the names he used for certain credits within the credit categories are not the ones LEED uses. It can get very confusing.3. Some of the information does not seem relevant at first, but the point is that it all ties together, the more background information you know, it's easier to make connections and see the big picture.Overall, the author's simple explanations helped me pass this test. It was very interesting and his terminology and examples were very easy to follow (at least for me, college student who has never been on a LEED project, or a project at all) and I would purchase again. Gave it 3 stars because no published book should have so many errors, and because he should be consistent with LEED's terminology. Also, he has charts and a glossary at the end of the book that were very important when studying. And the index included helped A LOT when reviewing. It was awesome!(PS know your ASHRAEs, refrigerants and MPRS!!)

By pw reader Once Touched (A Silver Creek Novel) is part of the trilogy but I found it to be very different from the first two books. It deals with anger, guilt, loss and forgiveness before true love can be found. The take on how many people are affected by the war is interesting in this story by Laura Moore and one that bears examining. The book is still focused on the ranch but Quinn’s interest in not in a cowboy but on a photojournalist, an injured recovering one. Though I did find Cowboy Josh to be a wonderful opposite to Ethan. Meeting him first in the story is beautifully played by the author.Ethan Saunders is a family friend very much in need of a pace to heal physically and emotionally after his last assignment in Afghanistan. Quinn does not really remember him from when she was a child which I found very interesting. Still, it makes their clashes seem very believable. Quinn is quite the wounded animal rescuer so it is right that she would be drawn to Ethan. I loved Quinn’s character and like her had to warm up to Ethan. This is a well-developed story that takes on some serious struggles in life today. I am impressed with the depth of plot along with the superb writing style and natural flow of events. Laura Moore’s best book for me to have read.Copy provided by the publisher through Net Galley for an honest review.

I quickly fell in love with the Knowles family and Silver Creek. While this is the third book in the series, it can easily be read as a standalone, though I now want to go back and read the first two books in the series as well. Quinn Knowles is the youngest of the Knowles siblings and the only girl, though she works just as hard if not harder than the men on the ranch. She loves animals and can't resist taking in an injured or orphaned animal in need. The only thing she has a problem with is all the "couples in love" that are around her. She's convinced that this just isn't meant for her, especially with her less than successful track record.Ethan Saunders is a photographer/photo journalist who used to spend his summers at Silver Creek when he was younger. After an extended assignment in Afghanistan, Ethan has returned to the States after being severely injured in an IED explosion. He has requested to come to Silver Creek while he recovers. Being 10 years older than Quinn, he still remembers her as a little girl with pigtails, which he soon discovers she so is not anymore. Ethan is not in the best of moods and is still harboring a lot of anger and bitterness as a result of what happened, but Quinn doesn't allow him to get away with his attitude, and gives it right back to him.As they spend more time together, their relationship progresses as does their romance. What starts off as something casual soon becomes something so much more. Ethan's physical wounds have healed, but his emotional wounds are still very present and very raw. Quinn faces the tough choice of doing what's best for Ethan, even if it means losing him in the process.I loved both Quinn and Ethan's characters, as well as all the secondary characters as well. Laura Moore is a very talented and gifted writer who just made the characters, the setting, and the animals come to life. The story was touching, romantic, sexy, heartbreaking, heartwarming, and just an overall good read.

By Ladies Who Lunch Reviews This is a sweetly written story, the third in the Silver Creek series, about the youngest sibling, Quinn Knowles, a young woman who has adored being around animals ever since she was a little girl. Her dream is to create an animal sanctuary on land she can purchase near her parents' ranch. She has a rescue horse that she knows won't be able to live away from her, dogs and even a parrot. After spending the weekend at a wolf sanctuary where she sponsors an abused and recovering wolf, her parents ask her to stop at the airport and pick up the son of old family friends who is coming to stay with the Knowles' family.Ethan is a photojournalist who has spent decades traveling the world documenting injustice and atrocities. His latest assignment was to be embedded with a military unit in Afghanistan. And when the group of soldiers he is photographing and travelling with are all killed in an attack, he is the only survivor, though he suffers grievous life-changing injuries. After being hospitalized in Germany and then at Walter Reed Hospital in Bethesda, he knows he needs to get away from his parents' worry and fear for him, because it's only making him more anxious about facing his future. And the only place he can think of that he'd like to go is the Knowles' ranch in California, which he lived near growing up and spent a lot of time at learning to ride and care for some of the animals. And, yes, it's not surprising that Quinn would discover the wounded spirit behind Ethan's cold and unfriendly manner as she gets to know him. He's adamant about not working in photography any longer and she's not entirely sure what happened at the time of his injuries, but since she's in charge of finding him a job on the ranch, she has him start working with her goats. She eventually decides a rescue dog for him to work with just might rescue Ethan, too. He claims not to be interested, but before long, the dog and Quinn's other animals are allowing them to spend plenty of time together and he finds he's enjoying himself. There's also a young, handsome cowboy named Josh who asks Quinn out and she's sure her mother was instrumental in setting her up. Because, at age 24, she's not really had even a serious relationship and is beginning to feel that there's something lacking in her basic makeup that keeps her from being attracted to and comfortable with anyone. Being such a lovely young woman, Quinn has never lacked for male attention, but whenever dating would progress to intimacy, she just never wanted to take things any further and had been called frigid or, even worse, a tease. So when Quinn starts to feel that Ethan might be more like her than he realizes, she's intrigued but also a little afraid to pursue her feelings. And when Ethan finds himself feeling jealous of Josh, he tells himself that he's too old and too damaged physically and emotionally for Quinn, but he's angry nonetheless that the young cowboy would pursue her.As their relationship progresses slowly and tenderly, it becomes clear that Ethan is exactly the man who Quinn needs in her life. But when he tells her that he had been contracted to put together a showing of his photographs in New York and he flat-out refuses to look at the photographs, Quinn feels that Ethan has to face his fears head on if he's ever to get past them. It seems as though the perfect opportunity arises when Ethan finally agrees to go with her and her family to her brother's upcoming wedding in New York, but Quinn wonders if her interference will help or ruin things between them.I received this as an ARC from NetGalley. Simulation modeling is increasingly integrated into research and policy analysis of complex sociotechnical systems in a variety of domains. Model-based analysis and policy design inform a range of applications in fields from economics to engineering to health care. This book offers a hands-on introduction to key analytical methods for dynamic modeling. Bringing together tools and methodologies from fields as diverse as computational statistics, econometrics, and operations research in a single text, the book can be used for graduate-level courses and as a reference for dynamic modelers who want to expand their methodological toolbox.

The focus is on quantitative techniques for use by dynamic modelers during model construction and analysis, and the material presented is accessible to readers with a background in college-level calculus and statistics. Each chapter describes a key method, presenting an introduction that emphasizes the basic intuition behind each method, tutorial style examples, references to key literature, and exercises. The chapter authors are all experts in the tools and methods they present. The book covers estimation of model parameters using quantitative data; understanding the links between model structure and its behavior; and decision support and optimization. An online appendix offers computer code for applications, models, and solutions to exercises.

    Review

With contributions from an array of skilled modelers, this carefully edited collection presents the state of the art in computational methods for model calibration, estimation, behavior analysis, and optimization. Much more than a survey, the book provides an intuitive introduction to each method; worked-through examples; and a glimpse of the history behind key ideas. All serious users of simulation models, whether graduate students or professionals, can learn from this timely volume.

(John Morecroft, Senior Fellow, Management Science and Operations, London Business School)

Impressive in the diversity of analytical approaches it brings to bear. This collection adroitly extends the capabilities of the system dynamics field, making dynamic modeling more credible, more powerful, more compelling, and, ultimately, more relevant for policy analysis. A significant and unique contribution to the literature. Admirable!

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. A much needed map of what is state of the art in dynamc modeling has finally arrived By G. Reichert "Learning all the relevant analytical tools will require taking several graduate-level courses in different departments, few of which directly focus on dynamics of social systems" - I can't say how much I believe this quotation from the introduction of "Analytical Methods for Dynamic Modelers" to be spot on. Becoming a proficient dynamic modeler who is abreast with the state of the art in his "craft" is like going on a journey that never ends. Jay Forrester, I believe, used to introduce himself as a "student of system dynamics" rather than as a master. While the journey still will never quite end, one might as of now at least not waste time with navigation and finding the way to proceed in one's studies - thanks to this very useful collection of introductory articles spanning three losely separated domains: estimation of parameters, model analysis and decision support/optimization.For anybody who wants to go beyond tautologies like "all models are wrong" or "regulators need to have requisite variety" or "system's thinking" in its more esoteric forms this is much needed reading (one wants to ask: "what took you guys so long?"). Very highly recommended!PS: It is interesting to see that when it comes to advanced methods Vensim still seems to be the SD-tool of choice. But to really go forward there is - as a look into the book will tell -- no alternative to using advanced scientific programming tools like Mathematica, Matlab or R. Hopefully this is going to be acknowledged by those who design SD-courses.

It was written by masters, is a powerful set of instruments, and will be a welcome source of knowledge, for the community of modelers at large. The book makes a good read, but it is much more than that: it is a blueprint for better models. Best value!!

Lady Pancake & Sir French Toast, by Josh Funk

Review “A tale of ‘to-go’ food that is good for you! What happens between pancakes and French toast when there is only one drop of syrup left? Readers get a ringside seat when the refrigerator door closes and the food comes to life. Lady Pancake and Sir French Toast take off on an edible version of American Ninja, running and rappelling through all the major food groups, each determined to reach the syrup first. The competition is fierce, as Toast plops into a vat of jam, and Pancake get sucked into chili-based muck. As the two royals skip through the Broccoli Forest and sail across soupy seas, the chilly interior of the refrigerator morphs into a true Hunger Games arena. . . . Kearney's illustrations kick butter, with full command of the story's arc. The bean avalanche is a trippy wonder that will be replayed at many dinner tables. The vibrant colors on simple backgrounds keep the action at the forefront, while the acrobatic rhymes tackle the next hurdle. Though not a nutritional guide, this serving of breakfast foods provides a heaping side of verbs. Teachers and students alike will delight in this food fight. Who will be the winner? Readers will be hungry to find out.” —Kirkus Reviews

But the words and phrases flowed beautifully in this book By English Teacher I have been anticipating this book for the past year and have spent quite a bit of time contemplating whether I will be Team Lady Pancake or Team Sir French Toast. When the book arrived in the mail, I shrieked with glee and told my son we had a treat for bedtime. That night, I cracked the crisp cover and smoothed my hands over the pages. I was immediately taken by the gorgeous artwork. I could see my son's eyes darting from character to character. He has a short attention span, and this book held his interest from cover to cover. Meanwhile, as he looked at the artwork, I lingered on each page and became enveloped in the comical story. Above all, I was blown away by the engaging writing. The first time I read a picture book, I often stumble over the words. It usually takes a few readings to read a book aloud at a steady pace. But the words and phrases flowed beautifully in this book. I couldn't help but wonder how many times the author revised in order to get the language just right. This book will be a crowd-pleaser in the classroom. I highly recommend it as a read-aloud.

By Carrie Charley Brown Just when good friends Lady Pancake and Sir French Toast think it’s okay to “chill out” with the leftovers, they must heat things up and go head-to-head in order to win the last drop of syrup. Their high-speed chase through the refrigerator is propelled by a steady rhyming rhythm, which further fuels the competition. Today’s busy kids are in competitive situations more than ever. Lady Pancake and Sir French Toast take an ever-important moment to reflect, and realize that cooperation might have served them better. As readers, we are left to soak up the good stuff- the syrup of life- friends… even when someone else beats us to the punch- or in this case, syrup! Double bonus: LP & SFT offers the perfect opportunity to exercise prediction skills through rhyming and plot!
