1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. such booster for the plan! By Luscian I am currently thinking of what to do for next year's summer. Of course, what is a summer without an outdoor activity. Aside from that, I am assigned for next year's plan. I though of going some hiking because none of the gang has experienced that yet. Hiking is not just an outdoor activity where you can just call your pals and go. This kind of activity needs to be prepared of.After asking several relatives of mine, I was referred to this book of Kevin Wilson. Told me that everything I should know about for such activity. Going out to wilderness needs preparation and it can be found in here. And they are right! From the things you have to bring, the food, the disasters you have to be aware of, and the best practices you really should observe. There's a lot to know about Hiking and this must be shared to whole gang!2

Simondon is a secret password among certain discussions within philosophy today. As a philosopher of technology, Simondon’s work has a place at the forefront of current thinking in media, technology, psychology, and philosophy with complex accounts of man’s relationship to technology and the realm that continues to form itself via this tension between man and his technical universe. In this introduction to Simondon’s oeuvre, the reader has access to the grounding of one of the most fundamental and critical questions that has been the focus of philosophy for millennia: the relationship between man and animal.

Crombez These are two wonderful lectures by Simondon for undergraduates aiming to get their degree in philosophy, psychology, or sociology. Not sure of the exact date of delivery, but the intro indicates that he taught this particular class until 1967. The lectures themselves examine in a generally chronological order pre-Socratic to post-Cartesian thinkers on the difference between Man and Animal. It's a fascinating read that traces the history of Western thought on human identity. Not too difficult a text, highly recommended.

1 of 2 people found the following review helpful. This is not the original 1864 book by Ticknor By Nelson A. Logan I own a copy of the original edition of Ticknor's "Life of William Hickling Prescott". The original edition contained pen and ink illustrations at the head of each chapter. Furthermore, the original edition that I own was typeset using the "long s" and the "short s" so that it takes some conditioning of the mind to read what appears to be "From thefe, and fimilar maffes of manufcript, were felected .." as "From these, and similar masses of manuscript, were selected ..". This reprint edition is definitely a fascimile of a later version for which the type for the entire book had been reset. Apparently this latter version omitted the illustrations that definitely add character to the original 1864 printing.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Excellent Content and significant photos but disappointing printing quality By Christoph Morgenstern When I got the book, I was highly excited about the detailed written explanations of the different coal mines and their contractors, the extensive captions to each picture and the content of the pictures itself. The mining machines are presented in their working environment and you find many pictures of the British fleet of Walking Draglines from the smaller Bucyrus-Monighan to the large P&H, Marion and Rapier machines. In the newer days, the hydraulic excavators from DEMAG and O&K, which worked the mines from the end of the 1970s, are also presented. With regard to the content and expertise captured in the book, it corresponds to the other books from the author Keith Haddock. He showed again, that he is a real expert on the subject construction and mining equipment and has access to a rich fund of excellent Photos form all ages of the mining industry. But: The printing quality of the book is very disappointing. The streaky photos look like printed on a home-office ink-jet printer, low contrast and some haziness. That is exceptional disappointing, because I know from other publications, that the authors photos have a real high quality and only the reproduction in this book made them looking so poor.

Free Ebook The Quantum Moment: How Planck, Bohr, Einstein, and Heisenberg Taught Us to Love Uncertainty, by Robert P. Crease, Alfred Scharff Goldhaber

The fascinating story of how quantum mechanics went mainstream.

The discovery of the quantum―the idea, born in the early 1900s in a remote corner of physics, that energy comes in finite packets instead of infinitely divisible quantities―planted a rich set of metaphors in the popular imagination.

Quantum imagery and language now bombard us like an endless stream of photons. Phrases such as multiverses, quantum leaps, alternate universes, the uncertainty principle, and Schrödinger's cat get reinvented continually in cartoons and movies, coffee mugs and T-shirts, and fiction and philosophy, reinterpreted by each new generation of artists and writers.

Is a "quantum leap" big or small? How uncertain is the uncertainty principle? Is this barrage of quantum vocabulary pretentious and wacky, or a fundamental shift in the way we think?

All the above, say Robert P. Crease and Alfred Scharff Goldhaber in this pathbreaking book. The authors―one a philosopher, the other a physicist―draw on their training and six years of co-teaching to dramatize the quantum’s rocky path from scientific theory to public understanding. Together, they and their students explored missteps and mistranslations, jokes and gibberish, of public discussion about the quantum. Their book explores the quantum’s manifestations in everything from art and sculpture to the prose of John Updike and David Foster Wallace. The authors reveal the quantum’s implications for knowledge, metaphor, intellectual exchange, and the contemporary world. Understanding and appreciating quantum language and imagery, and recognizing its misuse, is part of what it means to be an educated person today.

The result is a celebration of language at the interface of physics and culture, perfect for anyone drawn to the infinite variety of ideas.

Review “A fascinating tour of the lives and afterlives of some of the most captivating concepts of quantum theory.” (David Kaiser, author of How the Hippies Saved Physics)“A delight! A tour de force that is both illuminating and extraordinarily readable.” (Gino Segrè, author of Ordinary Geniuses: How Two Mavericks Shaped Modern Science)“This is an amazing book for scientists and humanists alike! Every page yields surprises―not only about the complex history of quantum physics but about how it impacts our understanding of ourselves in daily life. Required reading for anyone concerned with casting the fate of humankind in a radically new light.” (Edward S. Casey, author of The World at a Glance)“Reading The Quantum Moment is a very fun way to learn about where quantum physics comes from and the strange, even astonishing places it has gone with or without the physicists for whom it is the language of their craft.” (Peter Galison, author of Einstein’s Clocks, Poincare’s Maps, professor of science and physics, Harvard University)“Fascinating… Crease and Goldhaber have written an accessible and entertaining history that embraces both the science and the silliness of quantum mechanics.” (Publishers Weekly)“An entertaining read.” (Jim Baggott - Nature)

(Mostly) Accessible Physics By Amazon Customer This is one of the most accessible yet soundly informative books I have read on the mysterious world of the quantum, the divide between orderly Newtonian classical/causal physics and the strange probabilistic and seemingly random subatomic world of quantum mechanics. The authors discuss pioneering physicists such as Planck, Einstein, and Bohr, and disputes between them over the completeness of the quantum theory. Concepts such as entanglement, complementarity, conjugate variables, the Uncertainty Principle, and the wave/particle duality are presented in a fresh and engaging manner. For the layman, like this reader, who has struggled through more arcane works, such as A Brief History of Time, this book is a welcome assurance that these concepts are not completely out of reach for non-specialists. Nevertheless, I am reminded that Descartes said something to the effect that one can touch a mountain but cannot put one's arms around it as one could a tree, and that to know something it is sufficient to touch it with your mind, but to grasp it is necessary to embrace it with your mind. Some of the discussion in this book I did in fact grasp, but much I confess to have merely touched upon, especially the mathematical equations.

By Sobosage At a time when it seems like each month brings forth some new book on quantum physics, this one stands out for its readability, reference to modern literature and art, and even a bit of sly humor. Nice companion piece to Louisa Gilder's excellent, "The Age of Entanglement."

Wish this book had been written when I first started studying quantum mechanics. It would have saved me some time and a great deal of dismay.I have been studying quantum mechanics now for about 20 years and have to keep going over and over the material. Yes, after all this time I count myself a neophyte. You have to open yourself to an entirely new way of thinking. There has been many a night when I got out of bed, went to the library and reread pages I'd read the day before. You'll say to yourself, "that can't possibly be what I read." What did that page really say? And, you'll find you've recalled correctly. Close your mouth and accept your incredulity as a constantly returning visitor as long as you stick with this topic.I diagram sentences and draw flow charts. You've really got to want to know this stuff.

I've always have been intrigued with Yellowstone National Park, and since my first visit in 1980 I have been returning faithfully. In fact, I am so faithful I moved and now live within 30 or so miles from the North Gate of the park. But since this time I have been exploring and learning many of the secrets the park holds for its visitors.

In this book, Fly Fishing in Yellowstone National Park, I have compiled many of the things that first, second, and third time visitors want to know about where and how one might begin to fly fish within the park's boundaries.

Principal waterways are discussed so the listener has a fundamental idea of what to expect while taking their first exploratory steps into this wild and scenic portion of our country's first national park. I have provided many helpful hints so the listener will know what he or she is expected to bring, or to know, when venturing into this vast portion of Americana. Therefore, if you are eight or 80 this guide can help you in your fly fishing decisions while here in Yellowstone Country.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Practical Advice, but somewhat lacking By Phly Phisher If you are expecting literary prose, then look elsewhere. If you are a first time fly fisherman to the Park then this book offers solid advice and value. I would have enjoyed it more if there was more comprehensive coverage of waters in the park or at least more discussion on some "lesser known" waters. The advice given here by a Park veteran is spot on but we could use more of it for those of us who have fished the park for a number of years and are looking for something beyond the typical YNP fly fishing guides currently found on fly shop shelves. For the money it is still a good value and interesting read if you love fishing the Park or plan to one day.

A Thanksgiving Guest by Sadie Hunter

Jennie Louise is not in a Thanksgiving mood. The second Great War to end all wars is over, and there would be a lot to be thankful for if only her husband had returned. Instead, she left with the shattered dreams and empty bed of a war widow. To make matters worse, her sister’s husband made it back, and now they have a baby, too. Jennie doesn’t mean to be jealous, but it’s hard not to snap at her sister’s well-intentioned meddling.

This year, though, her brother William is bringing home a guest – a male guest! Clark has no one with whom to celebrate the holiday, as his wife and child passed away the year before. He is still grieving as well, but he is trying to go on living. When he takes Jennie out to the barn to warm her bottom for her selfish behavior, her entire family crosses their fingers and hopes that maybe he will be the one to help her begin that journey of healing and moving on.

The Thanksgiving Shyster by Brandy Golden

Gavin was looking forward to going home for Thanksgiving vacation. Since money was tight, though, he had advertised on the campus message boards for a passenger to share the driving and expenses. But if she didn’t show up soon, he was just going to leave without her! She’s already kept him waiting for over half an hour. Finally, a petite young student in tattered jeans and a hot pink sweatshirt, snapping a wad of gum, showed up and didn’t even apologize. Someone should have taught her some manners long ago, but if she pushed him much harder, he might just haul her over his knee for a sound spanking.

Pip didn’t understand why Gavin was so bent out of shape. She was used to manipulating guys and getting whatever she wanted, then dumping them, because she didn’t really want someone she could manipulate. This was going to be a long trip as it was, since she was penniless and couldn’t even afford a burger when he stopped for dinner later, much less pay her portion of the gas.

When Gavin discovered her deceit, he was determined that this was one time that she would pay for her misdeeds – if not in cash, then by a sound spanking.

How I Learned to Embrace Dead Beast Day by April Hill

A non-traditional housewife balks at the idea that she will be expected to cook the next Thanksgiving Dinner for her extended family. She never was much of a cook, and detested the idea of cleaning cranberry stains out of the carpet by herself. Determined to give it her best effort, she begins by buying an expensive tablecloth for a table much bigger than the one she and her husband own, complete with cloth napkins and engraved pewter napkin rings. She spends and spends, racking up quite a bill on her visa card. Afraid of the spanking she would when her husband found out, she entered a writing contest. Only, her actual family and actual Thanksgiving traditions would be much to boring for any contest, so she made something up. She never expected to win! Now she has to convince her family to dress up like real pilgrims, grow their own vegetables in a garden, and raise their own turkey, all for the sake of a few pictures the magazine wanted to take before presenting her with her grand prize check for five thousand dollars. She just knows that before all this is over, she’s going to get the worst spanking of her life.

    Thanksgiving Tarts by Miranda George

Willa missed the open-land spaces of the Texas panhandle where she grew up... It just took seven years of living in New York City to realize it. Now she wanted to move back, and more importantly, she wanted what she had before she left--a handsome rancher who, in the past, made her toes curl with pleasure.

In this poor Rosannah has been expelled from Raphael's house and his life, back in her own flat and her normality she is left to question her sanity. When Raphael does come back to her it opens up everything, feelings, ways of the vampires, Nicholas and The Unknown but worst still we are left on a cliff hanger again...... oh no now have to wait for part three

Intrigue and wonder filled this uncharted territory along with uncertainty and danger. But what happened after this newfound world crumbled through her fingertips? Rosannah is now faced with a startling reality and she is not the only one questioning her sanity. There are new faces to deal with and a new nightmare is on the horizon. Questions are in abundance but who is going to answer them? Can Rosannah cope with the truth or will she succumb to growing anxiety and madness?Rosannah tries to get on with her life without Raphael. But when no one remembers her being missing, she starts to wonder if it was all a dream, and to top it off Brianna has changed. Even when she’s goes out to lunch with Brianna and runs into Alex and he doesn’t even know her, so she finally decides it’s a dream. When Alex asks her out, Brianna pushes her into it, but it doesn’t matter, her heart belongs to dream Raphael. Brianna has a new boyfriend, and when she asks Rosannah to meet him, she is shocked to see that he looks exactly like Nicholas, Raphael's brother, but his eyes are a normal color and he eats. Rosannah tries to go on with life her life that is until there is a knock on her door. Standing there is Raphael. He confesses to her his feelings for her. But how can they make this work? After witnessing how a mortal is changed, Rosannah is still more against the whole vampire thing. And when they find out it is actually Nicholas, he is starts brainwashing Brianna, and it’s too much for Rosannah. But when they think their biggest problem is Nicholas, they realize that someone is still out to get her and this time they succeed. This book is out of this world. You get hooked and you can’t stop wondering what will happen with Rpsannah and Raphael. I guess we will have to wait for book 3

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. review of the lost brother By Roslynn I read Ms. Taniquelle Tulipano first book about vampires and couldn’t wait to read this second book in this series. Ms. Tulipano really wrote an interesting action packed highly entertaining book that I was ready to delve in her world again with humans and vampires. I do like Ms. Tulipano angsty mind playing romance lost vampires and humans. For some reason the characters not only the vampires seem much more relatable and easier to connect with than previous ones I have read about. I think that is what makes this story really addicting and so easily to get caught up in the story.Rosannah has been banished and exiled from Raphael’s house and away from him which unfortunately no one realizes this except her. To make matters worse Rosannah’s best friend Brianna is in love with someone quite suspicious known as Michael but who looks surprisingly like Raphael’s brother Nicholas. Who is Michael really a human or vampire?***Some Spoilers***I did get a little bit confused yes this is the second book but it seemed that I was missing something. I understood Rosannah’s exile but how the mind game that Raphael played on everyone left me a little dizzy that I wanted him to do that to me as well so I could figure out what exactly was happening. Eventually it did start to make sense I did have to read several chapters a few times in order to get the gist of what was going on. Brianna and Michael at times seriously just made me want to gag their relationship was just too perfect but then again maybe that was the point of it. Poor Alex I seriously want him to find another town and for a dog to find him bringing him happily back to civilization. I didn’t mind the ending for some strange reason yes it is a cliff hanger but I really am beginning to like Nicholas more than Raphael. I think I wanted more into his story than anything. I still enjoyed the story immensely, rated it four stars, can recommend it and will get more by Ms. Tulipano!

First published in 1985, William deBuys’s Enchantment and Exploitation has become a New Mexico classic. It offers a complete account of the relationship between society and environment in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains of northern New Mexico, a region unique in its rich combination of ecological and cultural diversity. Now, more than thirty years later, this revised and expanded edition provides a long-awaited assessment of the quality of the journey that New Mexican society has traveled in that time—and continues to travel. In a new final chapter deBuys examines ongoing transformations in the mountains’ natural systems—including, most notably, developments related to wildfires—with significant implications for both the land and the people who depend on it. As the climate absorbs the effects of an industrial society, deBuys argues, we can no longer expect the environmental future to be a reiteration of the environmental past. ABOUT THE AUTHOR William deBuys is the author of many books, including, most recently, The Last Unicorn: A Search for One of Earth’s Rarest Creatures. He lives in northern New Mexico. ACCLAIM “An eloquent, elegant, and continuously informative book.” -- Robert Adams, New York Review of Books “My choice as the best bioregional history anyone has written to date.” -- Dan Flores, Environmental History Review “A valuable contribution to the new environmental history. . . . [deBuys] knows the mountains and their residents as intimately as he knows his primary and secondary sources. This personal experience, along with numerous maps and pictures, brings the place to life.” -- Patricia Limerick, Environmental Review

23 of 23 people found the following review helpful. Very readable history (and more) of a fascinating area By A Customer William deBuys combines history, anthropology, ethnography, and environmental and land use science to show how all of these threads weave through three cultures -- Pueblo indian, Hispano, and Anglo -- in the Sangre de Cristo range of northern New Mexico to create a unique and fascinating place. The book is scholarly in its scope, but very readable. From the haunting, almost surreal image he paints in the Preface, in which he describes stumbling across a downed airplane in the snowbound mountains of the Pecos Wilderness, to the vivid character study of an Hispano couple reminiscing about their courtship and wedding over sixty years ago, deBuys's writing is consistenly fine. Anyone interested in this part of the country, or anyone interested in how a specific landscape acts and is acted upon by three radically different cultures, will enjoy this book. Highly recommended

10 of 10 people found the following review helpful. Cultural and resource writing of the highest order By Norm Cimon William deBuys writes with a deep and intimate knowledge of the people of northern New Mexico's Sangre de Cristo Mountains and the place they call home. The book is beautifully integrated with the changing cultural and, as a result, ecological history of the mountains as a focal point. The chapters thus provide a natural history of land use. The book builds to a crescendo with the final chapters providing a solid ecological framework on which to build a future that will meet the needs of the residents and the mountains themselves. This book is a real gem.

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Enchanting Journey By DesertRat As a born and raised New Mexican I found this read a warm journey through our rich history, and the ecological and economic impacts of the settling of the Sangre de Christos. deBuys is able to present the reader with an informative, objective and in depth view of the challenges that still face the cultural, and economic ties of northern New Mexico. His literary images helped bring back childhood memories, as well as a chance to revisit our enchanting landscape. deBuys, also provides an intro to the difficulty that faces government agencies like the Forest Service in their endeavor to manage our resources and the challenge of being caught between a rock and a hard place. Today, northern New Mexico has retained some of its historic identity while still struggling with flux of outsiders from tourism and immigration. Reading this book helped me to fall in love again with the villages of northern New Mexico and the people that fight to hold on to their history, land, and way of life as we progress into the 2000's.

Bad Magic (The Bad Books), by Pseudonymous Bosch

From School Library Journal Gr 4–6—Bosch is back with a novel that's part mystery, part adventure. This series opener features sixth grader Clay, the younger brother of the hero from Bosch's popular "Secret" books (Little, Brown). After an incident with some graffiti, Clay finds himself spending his summer at Earth Ranch, a camp for delinquent youth on a remote volcanic island. While at camp, Clay encounters a motley crew of eccentric kids; a llama that understands Spanish; a mysterious library; and, perhaps, even a bit of magic. Bosch employs, to great effect, his signature irreverence and hilarity packed into parenthetical asides and footnotes. The end result is a wacky, suspenseful mashup of Shakespeare's The Tempest and a summer camp tale that is a delight to read. Bad Magic is a clever and playful novel. An excellent addition to middle grade fiction collections.—Amy Koester, Skokie Public Library

Review Praise for Bad Magic:"Bosch employs, to great effect, his signature irreverence and hilarity... a delight to read. Bad Magic is a clever and playful novel. An excellent addition to middle grade fiction collections."―School Library Journal"Enjoyable... Bosch's arch narrative voice carries over from his previous books...From The Tempest and Lord of the Flies to shows like Gilligan's Island and Lost, cultural allusions abound as Clay tries to understand the island's many mysteries and meets his fellow campers. Gilbert's watercolors bring in additional humor."―Publishers Weekly[Bad Magic] contains threads of mystery, magic, word games, and snark... It is suspenseful, humorous, clever, and most importantly, fun. Bad Magic is definitely entertaining for a wide range of readers.―Voya"...Bosch's mix of slapstick silliness, sly authorial asides, and magical adventure will appeal to readers of Lemony Snicket and M. About the Author Pseudonymous Bosch is the infamously anonymous author of the New York Times bestselling Secret Series. Despite rumors to the contrary, his books are not actually written by his pet rabbit, Quiche; the rabbit is merely his typist.

Bad Magic by Pseudonymous Bosch By Maci and Zoe Read Books Maci's Review - Bad Magic by Pseudonymous Bosch is about Clay and him not being a magician. Ever since Clay's brother Max-Earnest did a trick and disappeared Clay has renounced Magic. When Clay's English class does a production of The Tempest and afterwards Clay can't write about it because it is about Magic, Clays teacher gives him a journal to write in so that he can get credit. When Clay Writes MAGIC SUCKS! in the journal and it appears on the wall at school the next day Clay is accused of putting it there and has to attend a summer camp for troubled youth on an island with a volcano to be able to return to school next fall. But when Clay gets to the island he finds that something strange is happening, there are strange coincidences with The Tempest and not to mention the strange way the camp is run. I was really excited to read a book by Pseudonymous Bosch, and it was good. I have read the first book in the Secret Series and have always wanted to read the rest of them. This book seems to relate to them but it is not necessary to read the Secret Series first. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes The Secret Series or anyone who likes Magic.Zoe's Review - When I first learned that this book was coming out and it was from Pseudonymous Bosch I knew that it had to be good, and it was. Even though it is not related to the secret series, it makes some really cool references to it. This book is about Clay, his parents think that it is best to let him parent himself thinking that they over parented Clay's older brother Max-Ernest. When Clay gets in trouble for supposedly graffitiing the school wall his parents for once decided to punish him for it by sending him to a camp for troubled kids. While Clay is wary of this camp, his parents are perfectly happy sending him there. At this camp Clay has to learn how to care for a pet llama and starts to think that there is more then meets the eye to the camp. This book always has you guessing even when you think that you have figured it out and it is captivating from the very beginning. The ending of the book is satisfying but leaves it open for the next one. If you liked the Secret Series by Pseudonymous Bosch or Series of Unfortunate Events by Lemony Snicket, then you will like this.

Better Than the "Secret Series"; A Study in Misdirection By Pop Bop I really liked this book, but for lots of reasons that no one else seems to be mentioning.First things first - I did not care that much for the first two volumes of the "Secret Series". The narrator was way too arch and intrusive for me, and I just didn't respond well to the antic cleverness of it all. I get it that lots of kid readers love that series and its comfortable jokiness, and I think that's wonderful, but it was just a bit too much for me. "Bad Magic" starts along the same lines, with pretty much the same cutesy narrator. But then, a few chapters in, just like that, the narrator for all practical purposes disappears into the background so that we can get to the great story that is being told. That's terrific because this book, and the series it opens, is for older readers who I suspect may have grown out of "Secret Series" type tales. For the same reason, this book doesn't feel at all like the Lemony Snicket books that feature the Baudelaires. "Bad Magic" is more complex and character driven and less dependent on narrator wordplay. It has a complex plot with a lot of subtlety, no silliness and no zany action/adventure.Here, we have passing reference to all kinds of pop icons, but the recurring reference is to Shakespeare's "Tempest". There are lots of obvious references but also many more subtle parallels that connect and reconnect as the story progresses; the result is a big step up in interest and depth. This step up in interest is complemented by the fact that much more attention is paid to characters and character development, motivations, feelings, and the interactions of the various players.MILD SPOILERS. At the outset this looks like a "Holes" kind of book involving an island work camp for juvenile delinquents. It quickly transforms into a magical tale, and owes more to Peter Pan's Lost Boys, or to shows like "Lost", than anything else.NO MORE SPOILERS, but trust me on this - the book moves through a couple of stages, each more interesting than the last. Just when you think it is "this" kind of book it becomes "that" kind of book. And that's not because the author doesn't know where he is going or has lost control of the narrative. Rather, it's more like the author is tricking the reader, (the magician's art of "misdirection"), with different styles and plots before truly revealing which way, and how magically and fantastically, this book is going to go.The result is interesting and rewarding. The book is on an entirely different plane than other Bosch books. I would not be reluctant to revisit this author. Please note that I received a free advance ecopy of this book in exchange for a candid review. Apart from that I have no connection at all to either the author or the publisher of this book.

OK, that's stretching the truth a little bit, but I received this book back in July of 2014. Then, as it happens sometimes, it fell off of my e-reader. So when I was trying to catch up with my reviews, I realized I had to check it out of the library. I've tried to read it twice, and then seriously buckled down and finished it. It is due back to the libary on Friday after checking it out ten times. So that beginning sounds a bit ominous, doesn't it? I don't usually DNF books if I can help it, and since I got the book for free (originally!) in order to review it, I knew I had to Git R Done.At its heart, the story is wonderful. Clay gets sent to a summer camp in the middle of nowhere because of something he does at school. He's dropped into the middle of this crazy place, and he has to try and fit in while figuring out exactly what is even going on. There are so many rules, a ghost story, the tale of the rich benefactor who lived there long ago, and a llama who seems to understand Spanish. That should be enough of a mystery, but there's a lot more. Clay's missing brother, their mutual love/hate relationship with magic, a mysterious journal, and The Tempest. Honestly, there's so much going on that it gets a bit overwhelming - unfortunately, more in a boring kind of way.Once I was finished, I realized that the main problem I had with this book was that it is a set-up for books to come. Well, I have to assume that, of course, but it sure felt that way. Plus all of the protracted absurdity really got a little tiresome. OK, I get it. Crazy stuff abounds. I don't want you to think that the writing isn't good, but it is. It just needed to be dialed back a bit, while increasing the more interesting parts. I'll let you figure out which are which.Bad Magic by Pseudonymous Bosch was be published September 16, 2014 by Little, Brown Books For Young Readers. A free copy of this book was given to Ink and Page in return for an honest review. Big thanks to the Publisher and the Author.Rating: 3Genre: Middle Grades Fiction Action/Adventure Fantasy Mystery SeriesAges: 10 and up

By Natalie @ BookLoversLife Here's my review of the audio of Book 1 and Book 2, pasted from Audible:)Rune Gate:Would you consider the audio edition of Rune Gate to be better than the print version?I definitely prefer the audio because it brings the story and characters to life.Who was your favorite character and why? This is hard because I loved all the characters but I think Douglas wins by a fraction. He is such a charmer. What does Mikael Naramore bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?He brings his voice! I loved how his tone and accent changed for each character and while, at first, I did think it odd that a male was voicing a female MC, Mikael really pulls it off. There are way more male characters than female ones so it made sense to have a male voice. I was really impressed by his range of accents. Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting? No because I knew it was too long to listen to in one sitting. I did look forward to jumping back into the world the author has created though and I was eager to see what happens next.Any additional comments?I'm so glad I got the chance to listen to this story. While reading it would of been good, listening to it was better. The story really came to life and I loved experiencing it along with the characters. The story is shrouded in mystery and when it comes together, it really surprised me because I wasn't expecting Douglas or where he came from. I expected a witchy read but this surpasses that.Mark E Cooper put a lot into his story and it shows. His characters are all well developed and the plot is fast paced. The story drew me in and I really can't wait to see what happens next. This is one I'd definitely recommend you listen to both for the story and the narrators voice. It's an enjoyable and fairly quick read.Chosen:Would you consider the audio edition of Chosen to be better than the print version?Yes. Mikael Naramore adds that something special to the story and brings it to life. What other book might you compare Chosen to and why?I don't compare books to other books because every book is different.Have you listened to any of Mikael Naramore’s other performances before? How does this one compare?Yes I have and he does an amazing job on Chosen just like his other books. His voice is very crisp and concise and really easy to listen to. He changes his tone to match the situation and has a melee of different accents.Any additional comments?Once again Mark E Cooper delivers a great read. In this edition of the Rune Gate Cycle the guys are stranded in Douglas world and need to adapt to survive. There is magic, mayhem, action, adventure, fights, deception and more than enough of everything to keep you reading. Chosen for me was the best book in the series yet and it was made even better by the audio book.I could feel the tension and it was like I was apart of the story while listening to the book. I loved that there are more characters and I loved Alexs' Chosen. That cat was awesome!!I can not wait to read more in this awesome series and would highly recommend the audio edition.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. so good I have it in omnibus and individuals By tim huggins I feel slightly let down by the Rune Gate books compared to Marks other works - simply because there's only 2 books in the series. This gives the advantage of being able to pick up a series with one purchase and nit being left hanging for years waiting for the next volume. I know I haven't said much about the story, but I'll leave that to the blurb and the other reviewers.
