Review "Beauty of the season, the comfort of family and a chance to reconnect with a slower more uncomplicated way of life... purely wonderful read." Isha Coleman, Hopeless Romantic Blog"A sweet holiday romance... fast paced with engaging characters." Sarah L, Net Galley Reviewer

From the Author I love writing holiday stories! There's something so magical about a Christmas romance and they are as much fun to write as they are to read. Last Chance Christmas combines my love of holiday romance with a sexy sports hero. Hockey star J.C. Royce returns to Cloud Spin, VT and runs into his old flame. This story gave me the chance to revisit Vermont at the holidays-- if only in my imagination. I hope you take the trip with me!

In Last Chance Christmas by Joanne Rock the good and bad sides of the sport is shown. Not knowing much about the sport, there is a lot to think about with injuries producing long term effects on professionals. Then the good on how it builds confidence, creating team skills and brings a community together.Aside from all this, the theme to me was the past must be faced in the light of today so that the future can be lived freely. This is what Shea has decided to do after hearing a talk radio speaker while in the hospital. Family, friends and old boyfriends come into play as she goes home to do this very thing. While there are aspects that I wished were developed more, it clearly shows how a person’s belief of past events is framed by their perspective. The story pace is quick but smooth. The characters of Shea and JC ae developed with the supporting characters not nearly as much. I think the fact that it is novella in length limits the ability to be able to do more with the other characters. Since the focus is more on the relationship between JC and Shea, along with her feelings of the sport this story works. I can truly say that you do not have to be a hockey fan to enjoy this story but fans of the sport should love it.The publisher through Net Galley provided a copy.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. nice romantic quick read By Carrie G. When Shea Walker is recovering from an automobile accident she decides she is going to head home for the holidays and try to mend her fractured relationship with her family. Shea doesn’t however let her parents know she plans on coming to town for Christmas and when she arrives she finds they have taken off to Hawaii for the holidays.Tired from the long drive and without a key to her parents home Shea doesn’t have a place to stay so when she runs into her old flame J.C. Royce she reluctantly agrees to stay with him. J.C. and Shea had split up when J.C. chose a career in professional hockey over their relationship so Shea still harbors a grudge but decides she has chosen to confront past relationships so she should start with J.C.A nice Christmas tale of two people brought back together that really never wanted to truly part. Loved the characters and where they were in their lives to make the story believable for them to come together. Being a novella the ending did seem a bit rushed but that happens a lot with the shorter stories so not a big let down.Overall, nice romantic quick read.I received a copy from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Great Second Chance Romance By Sarah53121 I was given an ARC of Last Chance Christmas from NetGalley for an honest review and this is my review.I really enjoyed this fast paced romance book by Joanne Rock. Shea and J.C. were both engaging characters who were well matched for each other. I liked the fact that they were sweethearts in the past who were given a second chance in this book.I am going to give this sweet holiday romance four out of five stars.

From the Back Cover

Will Nancy help bring the Green Goblins to victory and prove, against all odds, that maybe she's not such a bad player?

Paints a Bleak Picture of Soccer By MeanGreenZen My daughter and I have read and loved every Fancy Nancy and Nancy Clancy book to date, and my daughter loves playing soccer, so we have been eagerly awaiting this book! With the amazing performance by the US Women's soccer team in the World Cup, I thought the book would be a celebration of the sport, and for Nancy to reinforce some of the wonderful lessons my daughter has learned from playing soccer. It is with an extremely heavy heart that I write that I was very discouraged by some of the messages in this book. Nancy doesn't like soccer and isn't good at it. If that's the end of the story, why even write about it? Previous books have hinted that Nancy struggles as an athlete, so I expected the book to be about not comparing yourself to others and overcoming obstacles to pursue her passion for soccer. The title"Soccer Mania" and a picture of her jumping happily in a soccer uniform on the cover lead me to believe that the book would be about how Nancy learned that with practice comes improvement, that her body is strong and capable and that girls can be both fancy and enjoy sports, but what I found was a book that was more like a cautionary tale about all of the "horrible" things that might happen should anyone decide to step foot on a soccer pitch. The book is rife with ridiculous injuries that would send any rational child running for the hills (or the couch) instead of playing soccer. But if you want to encourage your daughter to paint her nails and cheer for her male friends to play soccer (don't worry, everyone gets hurt while playing...everyone), then this might be the book for you. There was an opportunity to point out how overbearing parents can ruin sports for everyone, but instead that just gets added to the general picture of misery that await any girl who might be athletically inclined. Instead of instilling fear that sports can hurt our girls, why not help them realize that exercise is a great way to stay mentally and physically healthy and a sedentary lifestyle is something to truly worry about? That their bodies are amazing and able? That being part of a team can cultivate skills that you can use for the rest of your life? Mrs. O'Conner, why oh why would you use your platform to do anything other than to reinforce to your readers that soccer is just as acceptable as cheerleading for girls? That's fancy for "sexist."

Not my favorite By kjbg We love Fancy Nancy books and my 5 year old daughter now enjoys the Nancy Clancy chapter books. We have already read two others, which we enjoyed, but I have a big problem with this one. In one chapter, Lionel is described as acting "drunk" off root beer. Luckily I was able to skip over that part without my daughter noticing. Referring to someone acting drunk, especially a child, is totally inappropriate and I couldn't believe the author made that choice as it adds nothing to the book. I was so disappointed. We adore this series and I usually recommend these books to friends because they are more innocent than some other books out there... Lionel also introduces the word "annihilate" as meaning "to kill." I know these books are meant to be for slightly older readers than Fancy Nancy, but I'm not sure young children need to know that word. Additionally, we found a typo in the book ("Nancy dad" should have read "Nancy's dad.")

He enjoys the author's writing style of weaving a great story in with the disaster. I have tried to get him interested in many different authors and books, but these are the only ones he consistently reaches for, and rereads.According to my son, the True Stories #1 was a little more enjoyable than #2, but he still gives it 5 stars. Thank you for keeping him entertained and engaged through reading!

The books are all based on real events written in a way that young minds can grasp and identify with. The kids are learning true stuff without even realizing it! How wonderfully sneaky is that? Note: Amazon LOOK INSIDE may show out-of-focus distorted display. The KINDLE download does not have this problem. AMAZON is looking into this technical problem and plans to correct it soon. Flesch-Kincaid Reading Grade Level is suitable for 9--adult. This edition is the full length edition with 33,000 words. An abbreviated edition for 8-12 is available with 7500 words. An 8-10 edition with 3600 words and a Reading Grade level of 3.2 is available. As with many illustrated classic stories, it is a story with unique characters and deals with hope, determination, compassion, and much more. In the opening preface, Robert Landsbury discovers the diary in a shed on a newly purchased estate in River Falls, Ohio and passes it along to his associates. The diary is faithfully preserved for today's reader. In it, the reader will discover that a ten-year-old mute girl, Tammy Wurtherington residing in the Wixby estate is the author. She loves to make dolls in a shed out in back of the house. She lives with Lord Wixby and Aunt May in a lavish estate at the edge of town. Aunt May teaches her to use a sewing machine and gives her a small one suited to size as a birthday gift. One day while constructing a toy soldier for her brother, Alfred the Mouse appears and is impressed with her ability to make doll outfits and reluctantly invites her to follow him to Kira if she will bring along the sewing machine. Tammy keeps a diary of her exploits in Kira which is ruled with an iron-hand by a pair of sorceresses, Catherine and Lucinda. Tammy and Alfred find their way through a fantasy underground transportation system that ends up with the pair mistakenly ending up in a wicker-basket in the middle of the ocean. Tammy finds her voice for the first time and Alfred explains that it is a “talking spell that allows virtually everyone to talk including the pesky (giant) flowers.” From this point you will discover many wonderful characters like Zeke, the Flying Opossum, and Cedric the Mongoose, who accompany Tammy on her journey to Capira to present a petition to return the kingdom to its former glory. You will meet the pirate, Captain Flynn, who loves to have his guests walk the plank and the loveable Kakuna villagers who's harvest is soon to be confiscated by the royal soldiers. But please beware of the Oxboar forest, where the evil Hoarggs reside otherwise you may end up in a stew-pot. Tammy has an adventure in which she learns to love all the strange living creatures she encounters in a magical land. Before she departs, all of Kira will fall in love with The Little Doll Girl who changed them forever and became a legend.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. VERY MAGICAL! By HISRABLEMOUTH Be prepared for a magical tale like no other!Tammy Wurtherington wrote this joyous diary in 1883. In the preface we discover that it was recently discovered by Professor Landsbury in an old shed in his Ohio back yard. Tammy writes of her fascination with her aunt's sewing machine and begins making dolls in the shed. What follows is a magical journey to Kira where she travels across the enchanted land in a quest to bring the kingdom to its former glory. Evil princesses, Lucinda and Catherine rule the kingdom with an iron hand that must be stopped. Before the quest is over you will meet a rag-tag group of pirates, the Kukana elves, the korgoyle, and the terrible Hoarggs. This is a wonderland where flowers and animals talk quite freely. Plan to fall in love with Zeke the adorable opossum and Cedric the flying mongoose who become best friends with Tammy. The diary is lavishly illustrated and will bring the story to life for the youngest and oldest of readers. One can easily compare this to Wizard of Oz, Alice in Wonderland, Narnia, and other children's classics. Like the classics, it is magical and introduces the reader to a joyous world of imagination like no other. In that this is one of eight books is a delight for this reader as one can only imagine what delights lie before us. Tammy Wurtherington is a joyful spirit that gives us hope as only she can do. Before the tale has come to the final pages we can see that a brave little girl with a big heart can make dreams come true.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. the main character is a little girl (Tammy) who finds herself in a fantastic world with all kinds of creatures By Amazon Customer The back of the book states it's written in a manner similar to Alice in Wonderland or the Wizard of Oz. I would agree, the main character is a little girl (Tammy) who finds herself in a fantastic world with all kinds of creatures, some friendly and some evil. The events in the world of Kira give Tammy the chance to develop bravery, friendship, and leadership skills, which she had a harder time with in her real world. There are different versions of the books for different age levels. I do appreciate that the sorceresses and their evil spells are shown to be wrong, while the "good guys" go into battle after saying a prayer to God.I received a free copy of this book through Goodreads

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. It is a magical tale like Narnia or Alice In Wonderland By Diane K. I found the story to be captivating. It is a magical tale like Narnia or Alice In Wonderland.Tammy is mute and a very creative little girl. One day when working in her workshop she meets a talking mouse and follows him to Kira; a land where even the animals speak. The inhabitants of Kira are ruled by two evil Sorceresses, Catherine and Lucinda. Tammy listens to the stories of harsh taxes, little food and decides to start a journey to take a petition to the capital city on behalf of the citizens. On her journey she meets all kinds of inhabitants from the Kakuna to the Hoargg. The whole kingdom is afraid of the Hoargg with rumors that they eat anyone that comes into their forest. Tammy, of course, doesn't believe they could be that bad and insists on going to meet them. After all, if they are to defeat Catherine and Lucinda all of the villages must be united. What follows is a story that includes lessons on courage, compassion, not judgingthings/people by how they look and more. The lessons are subtle but they are there. This is a great book for parents to read with their young children. The lessons truly will benefit all and the story is magical.I received this book free from the author through Library Thing for review purposes. Just a short note in addition to the review: Make sure when choosing the Little Girl Doll that you choose the age appropriate one. There is one for ages 8-12 (a bit shorter) and one for 12 to adult.

And when troublemaker Darin shows up, things become even more complicated for all the townspeople of Peaceful Haven. Set against the backdrop of an alien world, this sci-fi western offers a story of revenge, adversity, and, ultimately, forgiveness.

By Amazon Customer Trouble in Peaceful Haven is a fun, fast, and entertaining read that packs the emotional punch of a vast novel. For the fact that it was still $0 at the time, i had to add it to my collections. The book is wonderful, and i must commend the author for it. I will be giving it my 4 star for the following reasonsIts 2 books in one as you may have already known. It is Well written with images for better understanding and finally, the formatting is good but not perfect as one or two images overlapped with some of the text concealing what’s within. Hope the author sees this and edit it. But apart from that, its recommendable.

MOMENTUM IS BUILDING for a return to the Moon. NASA’s international partners on the International Space Station are in favor of returning to the lunar surface, as are India and China. The horizon goal may be Mars, but the political, funding and the technological and medical infeasibility of such an objective means the next logical step is a return to the Moon. While much has been learned about the Moon over the years, we don’t understand its resource wealth potential and the technologies to exploit those resources have yet to be developed, but there are a number of companies that are developing these capabilities. And, with the discovery of water in the lunar polar regions, plans are in the works to exploit these resources for fuel for transportation operations in cis-lunar space and in low Earth orbit (LEO).

The time has come for commercial enterprise to lead the way back to the lunar surface. Embarking on such a venture requires little in the way of new technologies. We don’t need to develop super-fast propulsion systems like those required to get us to Mars safely, nor do we need hundreds of billions of dollars that the experts reckon it will cost to transport humans to the Red Planet. What we do need is a place to test the technologies and deep space experience that will enable us to build a pathway that will lead us to Mars. That place is the Moon and this book explains why.

Review

“Seedhouse presents the case of using the Moon as a technological stepping-stone to an eventual mission to Mars. … Mars via the Moon effectively, if briefly, outlines the key issues with respect to space explorers once again leaving low-Earth orbit for more ambitious goals. It supports the premise of using the Moon as the best means of proving the technology, identifying sustainable industry, and addressing the long-term physiological and perhaps psychological limitations of humans before attempting a mission to Mars.” (Anthony Young, The Space Review, the spacereview.com, January 2016)

Despite all the calls by the delusional 'Mars in a Decade' fanatics, the reality is that we are a long, long, LONG way from proving the technologies needed to land humans on the Red Planet. Seedhouse does an excellent job at explaining how the Moon will be used as a proving ground for developing the myriad technologies needed for a manned Mars mission sometime before the end of the 21st century. It makes for exciting and compelling reading.

When evening came I turned to the books, and gathered a great deal about the fiery planet, including the fact that a stout man, a Daniel Lambert, could jump his own height there with the greatest ease. Very likely; but I was seeking information on the strange light, and as I could not find any I resolved to walk over and consult my old friend, Professor Gazen, the well-known astronomer, who had made his mark by a series of splendid researches with the spectroscope into the constitution of the sun and other celestial bodies. Before setting out into space, the author goes on at length in a Platonic pseudo-conversation about the various ways one might launcoh a ship into space. The discussion starts with giant cannons - the same solution Verne ended up with. Its speculation covers cannons firing other cannons into the air (like multistage rockets turned backwards), then cannons with multiple boosters (like Iraq's more recent Babylon project), then turns to the magnetic launchers like those in Heinlein's The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress. In the end, though, the authors fall back on some mysterious and unspecified force harnessed by a brilliant inventor.Next, we get a lengthy lecture on the layout of the solar system, as it was known before Pluto's discovery. This quickly becomes tedious to modern readers who learned the material in grade school. The use of personal pronouns "he" and "she" for heavenly bodies might tickle some imaginations, though. Then there's the means of interplanetary signaling: beacons that project different atomic spectra by turns - a signal good for about one bit per second of bandwidth, tops.Skipping lightly over the voyage itself, we arrive at Venus itself, an Edenic land of people human enough for romantic interest. We establish early on that it also supplies plenty of gold and other rare materials which, as we know, provide the only meaningful measure of a voyage worth taking.I recommend this highly for its camp value, but also for its look back at the patterns of thought and culture taken for granted as the 1900s were approaching. Although their beliefs wander between naïve, vain, jingoistic, and occasionally repugnant, they are a real part of our history and worth knowing for that reason if no other.-- wiredweird

Adair Published in 1897, written some time before 1889, this novel was the first to predict that space travel would be accomplished by a mutii-staged rocket. It also discussed the possibility of building an artificial planet, what we call a space station. John Munro was an UK engineer, professor of mechanical engineering at Bristol, writer of popular science books and an editor and contributor to Cassell's Family Magazine, mostly on scientific subjects.Munro was, unlike so many scientifically trained specialists today, a man with a Liberal Arts education which included a love of poetry and as well had a broad knowledge of the science of his day. There is a marvelous discussion of the scope of astronomical knowledge, circa 1880, which those who like the history of science will find fascinating. Going beyond the science fiction scope of this book with its Jules Verne solid science approach, Munro had a sense of wonder, a love of adventure and the exotic. His description is powerful, transporting and often very poetic, much like Ray Cummings and A. Merritt at their best. If you are familiar with the Famous Fantastic Mysteries magazine, this is the sort of story they used to publish.

By Reviewer For those who can bear with the glacial, gabby pacing of gaslight SF, this book is a nostalgic treasure trove of the era's speculation on the nature of the planets, and the possibility- then, so seemingly remote- of someday learning what is out there. Once clear of the garrulous terrestrial preamble, the sense of wonder is contagious, regardless of what we now know to be true.

You can get a real sense of the hurt Leia still carries for her lost planet and for all the losses the Rebellion continues to suffer. This story expands minor characters from the movies such as Nien Nubb and hints at Leia's untrained Force sensitivity. All in all, Leia is perfect in this. She's one of the great leaders of the Alliance and also a warm, emphatic soul who cares about the individuals around her. This is great for the middle schoolers it's aimed at and adult fans.Read this AFTER the Luke Skywalker novel "Weapon of a Jedi" and the Han Solo novel "Smuggler's Run".

A Mature Examination of the Cost of War By RDD In "Moving Target: A Princess Leia Adventure", Cecil Castellucci and Jason Fry present Leia's actions between "The Empire Strikes Back" and "Return of the Jedi". The title refers to the fact that Leia, being a high-ranking and well-known member of the Rebel Alliance, must be constantly moved to avoid Imperial capture as the Rebellion plans what to do following the disastrous Battle of Hoth. Wanting to contribute in a more active role, Leia helps devise and execute a decoy mission to draw the Empire's attention while the Rebels assemble their fleet to target the second Death Star. Of the three books in this series, this one is the most adult in theme, dealing with moral ambiguity and debating which sacrifices are necessary in a time of war.Like the other three books, "Moving Target" features a brief glimpse of events leading to "The Force Awakens". This preview shows Leia preparing for a battle with the First Order, referencing Poe Dameron (the pilot in the "Episode VII" trailers), and talking with Major Ematt, who first appeared as Lieutenant Ematt in "Smuggler's Run". Here, too, Phil Noto's artwork adds a nice touch, linking this with the other two books in the series and providing a nice glimpse into the action. The only complaint I have about "Moving Target" is that the setting of its story confirms that Disney/Lucasfilm no longer consider "Shadows of the Empire" canon. This will only upset fans who experienced that work, though, and the book does offer good insight into not just Leia, but Nien Nunb, a side character whose importance was implied by his role as Lando Calrissian's co-pilot in "Return of the Jedi" and who now has a proper backstory. In summary, "Moving Target" is a nice conclusion to this trilogy of books and does a great deal to set the stage for "The Force Awakens".

In my humble opinion, compared to the Star Wars and Darth Vader series, it felt like a bad Saturday morning cartoon, and the Dodson's art within the issues wasn't up to their standard. I really wanted a Leia story that did this great character justice, and I'm thrilled to say that Moving Target does that and more. The Luke and Han books in this line-up both took place between Episodes IV and VI, so it's nice to see that Leia's book is set between V and VI. What's even nicer is that Luke makes brief appearance throughout the book; it gives insight into his transformation after the end of Episode V. But ultimately, this book is about Leia and the team of rebels that she leads, and I'm glad to say I came to care for all of them. But as for Leia, we really see what drives her and what frightens her, and how those aspects of her combine to make her the great leader she is. Much like The Weapon of a Jedi and especially Smugglers' Run (my favorite of the three), Moving Target reads in Carrie Fisher's voice, and it does not feel like a throwaway novel but rather an essential piece of Star Wars canon once you've read it. Castellucci and Fry capture Leia's wit, boldness, and love perfectly through this book. And Phil Noto's illustrations are excellent once again. In fact, I think he draws Leia even better than he draws Luke and Han.I will also say that the prologue and epilogue here are (to me at least) by far the most exciting of the three books. It provides clear insight into Leia's role in Episode VII without spoiling anything, really. The epilogue also mentions someone who will likely be a key character in episode VII.Overall, my favorite of these is Smugglers' Run, followed by Moving Target, and followed (very closely) by The Weapon of a Jedi. I may have even given this book 5 stars, but this is a review of the product, unfortunately there was a printing issue on each page where the pages numbers at the bottom were cut off.
