It would have been much better if the story had been fleshed out to a full, 250-300 page book. Now the story line has been rushed and opportunities to create interesting scenes were lost. In many ways it seems more of an outline than a finished book.I liked the characters and it would have been great if the plot twists had been worked out in more detail. It seems to me that the author was a little too eager to get his story out to the reading world and it would have benefitted from more time spent on development.

By Peer There was never a second that I felt bored from reading this book and I did not even put the book down. I read the entire book in one sitting. Every chapter gives you an excitement and it keeps on building towards the end. I can’t wait to read more books about this author. It is entertaining and well thought-of. It is very easy to read and to understand. A great read for everyone. I will be reading everything from this author!!

Good premise, but needs more work By Rosalie Redd This books has a good premise about a war on one of Saturn's moons, but the characters need to be fleshed out to clarify their goal, motivation, and conflict, providing more depth to each character. The plot wandered, sometimes leading up to an important event, only to skim over it. The story would be better served with a deepened point of view, character development, and cohesive plot elements.

I was fascinated by the pictures and little known information, all presented first person. It contains some fine Canadian history as well, since Mr. Jones also travelled there. Thanks to this man buffalo still exist and have made a comeback. Zane Grey also wrote about him in the book, Last of The Plainsmen. Zane Grey covers a tiresomely long dirty trek through the desert unrelated to buffalo and not one of his finest books although I assume it is accurate. If you can get through the desert it also tells other adventures of this remarkable man. However, Forty Years of Adventure is by far the better book to me. The Amazon edition has the pictures so it is nice read on a computer screen in order to better see the details.

By annieb Very interesting and a bit unusual in writing style, but I got used to seeing the highlights before each chapter. Can't imagine the hardships on the open plains and near the Arctic Circle. Survival in the elements must have been horrendous! I recommend this to anyone who likes to learn how live was in this era.

'Essential reading.'Bernice Lee, Chatham House'Lays out the energy security landscape with a commendable clarity that I have not seen elsewhere. It could help save the world.'Science, People & PoliticsAccessible and exciting ... [this] is the first truly objective examination of the relationship between resource scarcity, security and ecological destruction.Neues DeutschlandCuts through the confusion and complexity, clarifying the options for a sustainable energy future.Dan Esty, Yale UniversityHumanity stands at a threshold: will its shared energy future be peaceful, or will it be threatened by resource wars? How can rapidly depleting resources be managed to the advantage of all, and therefore conflicts averted? How can we avoid irreparable damage to the last areas of untouched natural beauty, all in the name of accessing valuable resources? And how do we arrive at an international energy policy which not only provides safe, economical energy without conflict, but also addresses the all-important issue of climate change: What is the best way to achieve greater energy security?Energy Security addresses all of these questions, arguing for an urgent overhaul of international law and institutions to control relations with countries such as Russia, which own the worlds remaining fuel supplies. The book presents alternatives to fossil fuels as two diametrically opposing strategies: the increased use of atomic energy; and a comprehensive climate protection policy with a focus on energy efficiency and renewable energy. In times of international terrorism, there are heightened concerns about nuclear proliferation, and Energy Security argues that the future must belong to renewable energy.Published with the Heinrich Bll Foundation

In the sixteenth century, Nicolaus Copernicus dared to go against the establishment by proposing that Earth rotates around the Sun. Having demoted Earth from its unique position in the cosmos to one of mediocrity, Copernicus set in motion a revolution in scientific thought. This perspective has influenced our thinking for centuries. However, recent evidence challenges the Copernican Principle, hinting that we do in fact live in a special place, at a special time, as the product of a chain of unlikely events. But can we be significant if the Sun is still just one of a billion trillion stars in the observable universe? And what if our universe is just one of a multitude of others-a single slice of an infinity of parallel realities?

In The Copernicus Complex, the renowned astrophysicist Caleb Scharf takes us on a scientific adventure, from tiny microbes within the Earth to distant exoplanets, probability theory, and beyond, arguing that there is a solution to this contradiction, a third way of viewing our place in the cosmos, if we weigh the evidence properly. As Scharf explains, we do occupy an unusual time in a 14-billion-year-old universe, in a somewhat unusual type of solar system surrounded by an ocean of unimaginable planetary diversity: hot Jupiters with orbits of less than a day, planet-size rocks spinning around dead stars, and a wealth of alien super-Earths. Yet life here is built from the most common chemistry in the universe, and we are a snapshot taken from billions of years of biological evolution. Bringing us to the cutting edge of scientific discovery, Scharf shows how the answers to fundamental questions of existence will come from embracing the peculiarity of our circumstance without denying the Copernican vision.

With characteristic verve, Scharf uses the latest scientific findings to reconsider where we stand in the balance between cosmic significance and mediocrity, order and chaos. Presenting a compelling and bold view of our true status, The Copernicus Complex proposes a way forward in the ultimate quest: determining life's abundance, not just across this universe but across all realities.

Review

A Best Book of the Year, Physics World

“If you want a compact and engaging survey of what we actually know about the possibilities involved with life in the universe, this is an excellent read.” ―Chad Orzel, Uncertain Principles

“[The Copernicus Complex] is an engaging book that covers a lot of scientific ground . . . Scharf handles complex concepts gracefully.” ―Cait MacPhee, Times Higher Education (UK)

“[A] witty, adroitly marshalled treatise on human significance.” ―Robin McKie, The Observer (UK)

“[A] tantalising approach to the mysteries of the universe.” ―Peter Forbes, The Independent (UK)

“When it comes to scientific thought-provocation, Scharf is there with Paul Feyerabend and Richard Feynman, Marie Curie and Peter Higgs . . . This book feels alive with spontaneity . . . [It] is near combustible with convivial--maybe even mad--energy.” ―Barnes and Noble Review

“How reasonable is it to think that we are alone in the vast expanses of space? And how significant is life on Earth on the Universal (or multiversal) scale? These are the questions that astrobiologist Caleb Scharf addresses intelligently and comprehensively in his beautifully written The Copernicus Complex. The book offers a grand tour of important findings from astronomy to biology that are relevant to the cosmic and microscopic search for life.” ―Mario Livio, Nature

“An enlightening read even for those people familiar with many of the astronomical and astrobiological topics discussed within.” ―Jeff Foust, The Space Review

“Exceptionally clear, entertaining, [and] up-to-date.” ―Jeff Horgan, Salon

“A brilliantly written and engaging account of modern astronomy.” ―Owen Gingerich, American Scholar

“Engrossing and accessible . . . The Copernicus Complex offers an invigorating, absorbing glimpse into the profundities of our very existence. With an engaging style and ample elucidatory prowess, Scharf beautifully conveys the latest cosmological insights whilst inspiring both wonder and awe. Although our place in the universe may well be 'unique but not exceptional,' our ability to parse meaning amidst its massivity is truly extraordinary.” ―The Oregonian

“The Copernicus Complex delivers its argument with comparable clarity, insight and humour. There is much to enjoy along the way, including a compelling account of the extraordinary diversity of planetary systems we now know to exist.” ―The Telegraph (UK)

“An intoxicating collection of questions answered with other questions, and startling discoveries that make creation even more mysterious . . . Books such as these remind us that we are lucky to be here at all, and even luckier to be here now.” ―The Guardian (UK)

“[An] ingenious mixture of cosmology, evolutionary biology and philosophy.” ―Kirkus Reviews

“Scharf covers a lot of ground, and his entertaining, accessible approach offers valuable insight not just into science, but also into the way our assumptions can make a difficult task, like finding life in the universe, even harder.” ―Publishers Weekly

“This lyrical tale describes how we have opened our minds to appreciate our cosmic insignificance as we explore the true wonder of the cosmos, including the fascinating question of whether we are alone in the Universe. Caleb Scharf highlights the newly discovered possibilities for housing life in the cosmos, but--just as important--the new ways we might find out if it is out there. This voyage of discovery demonstrates that scientific progress requires us to transcend the often myopic intuition that evolution has saddled us with, and let nature be our guide.” ―Lawrence M. Krauss, Foundation Professor and Director of the Origins Project at Arizona State University, bestselling author of A Universe from Nothing and The Physics of Star Trek

“The Copernicus Complex addresses a perennial mystery: the cosmic significance (or perhaps the insignificance) of life on Earth. Caleb Scharf summarizes current debates on how life began and how pervasive it is, explaining how our perspective has been changed by the recent discovery that there are millions of Earth-like planets in the Milky Way. He sets his theme in a historical context, writing in an engaging and accessible style.” ―Martin Rees, author of Just Six Numbers and From Here to Infinity

“Sweeping in reach and lucid in exposition, The Copernicus Complex raises profound questions and offers provocative insights into our ongoing quest for life's cosmic context.” ―Ray Jayawardhana, astrophysicist and author of Neutrino Hunters

“In a universe of infinite space, are we unique or mediocre? Caleb Scharf has taken one of the most essential questions in all of science and philosophy and made it a compelling story of discovery. Combining a writer's flare for history and detail with the insight and range of a leading astrobiologist, Scharf not only gives us a scientific tour of life in the universe, he also offers his own original ideas for understanding our place in the cosmos.” ―Adam Frank, Professor of Astrophysics, University of Rochester, NPR commentator and the author of The Constant Fire: Beyond the Science vs. Religion Debate.

“In The Copernicus Complex, Caleb Scharf beautifully explains the astrophysics and metaphysics at the frontier of the modern search for extraterrestrial life and intelligence. In this panoramic journey that stretches from the teeming microcosm within a single drop of water to the infinitudes of planets that orbit distant stars, Scharf assembles an authoritative and visionary argument that our place in the universe--our world, our lives, our time--may be far more special than most scientists have dared to dream. Read this book to find out how and why humanity could be on the cusp of cosmic significance.” ―Lee Billings, author of Five Billion Years of Solitude

“Caleb Scharf beautifully describes the Copernican Revolution as a revolution in both senses of the word: it overthrew the reigning idea that humanity lives at the center of the universe, but it has brought us back around to a new recognition of how special our place in the grand scheme of things really is. As Scharf reveals, the universe appears to be eerily fine-tuned for life, and The Copernicus Complex is one of the most perceptive discussions I've read about that fact.” ―George Musser, award-winning journalist and author of The Complete Idiot's Guide to String Theory

“The Copernicus Complex takes us on a wonderful journey, from the formation of stars, through the biological basis of life, to the present human condition. And on the way it tests the limits of the Copernican Principle: perhaps humankind's position in the Universe is not so ordinary after all.” ―David J. Hand, author of The Improbability Principle

About the Author Caleb Scharf is the director of the Columbia Astrobiology Center. He writes for The New Yorker, New Scientist, Science, Scientific American, and Nature, among other publications, and has served as a consultant for the Discovery Channel, the Science Channel, and The New York Times. Scharf has been a keynote speaker for the American Museum of Natural History and the Rubin Museum of Art, and is the author of Gravity's Engines. He lives in New York City with his wife and two daughters.

By Amazon Customer In this thoroughly researched and well-written book, A leading astrophysicist, Caleb Scharf, demonstrates that we are not insignificant in our place in the cosmos. The Copernican idea has been taken by many scientists and philosophers to imply that we are an irrelevant and unimportant part of a vast universe. In this book, Scharf challenges this notion. He offers us the very latest from astrophysics and biological sciences to demonstrate that all of us here on this pale blue dot are very rare indeed. In the concluding chapter of his book entitled "(In)Significance," Scharf concludes "even the underlying properties of the universe suggest that it is finally balanced, near a boundary. A little too far to either side and the nature of the cosmos would be radically different." One of these boundaries against which we are very finely balanced is the existence of life itself. All of us here on the pale blue dot are on a razor's age. A little bit too far this way or that, and none of us would be here. What is the significance of all of this? Scharf does a good job of using available science to demonstrate that this is very significant indeed.

14 of 16 people found the following review helpful. good science and By Sunny Randomness, nonlinear dynamics, chaos theory: these are three of the main ideas that flow through Caleb Scharf's The Copernicus Complex. He writes with clear reasoning and logic ... no turbulence here. Scharf successfully uses them as the foundation of an approach to finding our place in the universe.Scharf introduces and analyzes many other seemingly diverse concepts in pursuit of his objective: to explain how to find our significance in the cosmos ... not in a theistic or religious sense, but in a biological, scientific sense. The concepts he discusses include the Copernican principle of mediocrity, the anthropic principle, Bayesian analysis, chaos theory, biochemistry, evolutionary biology, the fine-tuning of physical constants, some history of science, and philosophy of science. He smoothly integrates these subjects in support of his objective.Scharf's overarching philosophy is a welcome new approach. The reader will find many familiar subjects here, and the author gives each a fresh look and interpretation. The effect of this on his project is to strengthen the reader's understanding and support of his concluding arguments.Although he doesn't offer specific answers to the questions "Is life common in the universe?", and "Are we (in)significant within it?", it is clear to me that he supports the idea that life, simple and complex, inevitably arises at the right time and in the right places. He suggests that those times and places are not as rare as some argue. Life is the most complex construction of ordinary chemistry and physics that the universe produces. It is a natural outcome of those forces. Life is not the incalculably rare winner of some cosmic lottery, nor the product of nonphysical "essences."To that end Scharf demotes the usefulness and importance of both the rare earth and the anthropic principle hypotheses. Whether these are correct or incorrect is not the point. Rather he questions their usefulness. Can they help guide science, astrobiology and SETI in particular, in a search for evidence of life elsewhere? This is the core of his thesis ... good science and, by extension, good scientific and philosophic attitudes in a quest for knowledge requires evidence and diligence in its confirmation.Scharf gives us several hints along the way about how to achieve his objective. Here are a couple:"It's not obvious that life needs anything more than a rough-and-ready environment to originate and survive in. So true cosmological fine-tuning should be more about the particular ease with which life can occur – and for now, at least, no distinction between intelligent life and "simple" life, since there's nothing simple about life in any form." p 35Scharf's exposition of horizontal gene transfer between different species of bacteria suggests that even when the earth was populated only with these single-celled organisms life was not so simple. This hints that the rise of true multi-celled organisms was not that difficult, probably gradual and not explosive, and not because special conditions suddenly arose."… any thinking life-form anywhere in the universe may always perceive "special" characteristics in its own circumstances – specifics that, if different, would derail the chances of complex life occurring. This perceptual bias may be irresistible regardless of whether complex life is rare or as common as muck. Until we either discover life elsewhere or somehow rule it out, any post hoc interpretations of the significance of our circumstances are almost meaningless. …" p 203-204"We are, I think, still unlikely to be central to the universe, either astrophysically or metaphysically. But this does not preclude the possibility that the pathway of emergence that produced us is unusual in its details. We need to get comfortable with that degree of specialness, because it influences our outlook and our scientific strategies for reaching out to the universe." p. 230For reading about chaos, Scharf suggests James Gleick's Chaos: Making a New Science. Another good work on this subject is Stephen H. Kellert's In the Wake of Chaos. The Copernicus Complex by Caleb Scharf is informative over a wide range of subjects, which he cleverly integrates into a single theme about the significance (or not) of humankind and life in general in the cosmos. It should be required reading for students and professionals of astrobiology and SETI. The lay reader who is moderately familiar with these subjects will find it an enjoyable, accessible, and, not least, a thought provoking read. I recommend it and give it five stars.

Gray I've read lots of books like this but his takes a somewhat different approach and makes some excellent points. One of the best was his observation that what seems like an incredible coincidence to the person experiencing it is the commonness of such events when looked at from a broader point of view. I experienced an unbelievable coincidence in Naples, Italy about 20 years ago, but when I think about all the residents of Naples or Italy, someone is probably experiencing something just as amazing almost every day. Seems obvious in retrospect but I never quite realized his point before. But his main point about living on the edge between chaos and predictability could use more exposition and examples.

Covers the plots of the movies very well, minimizes violence, but are complex By DDC These came tonight and, to fulfill a promise to my 5 1/2 year old son, I read them all to him, which took about 50-55 minutes. These are golden books in the sense that they do a good job minimizing or glossing over some of the violence (for example, Obi Wan is struck down, but no mention of his death and there is no explanation of how badly Anakin is mangled after his final battle before donning the iconic suit). All of the major plot points are hit in these books, so they are (1) great at giving the story and (2) super complex (the first three books in particular can be very confusing because of the the different factions). Thus, if you were imagining golden books with simplified story lines and easy to read words and concepts, think again. My son loved them and I'll probably have to get him an ewok stuffed animal (should have seen that one coming). The big take away is that these are awesome books that fully engage a child in the Star Wars universe but they are in no way easy or level appropriate for new and newer readers.Based on my son's response, I highly recommend them to you. I hope this review helps

She *loves* them, and she isn't even two years old yet. At bedtime, she says "Daddy Star Wars!" and I read each book, one a night, to her. She also likes to flip through the pages and "read" me her version of the story. She'll point to Princess Leia and say "Mommy!" which my wife adores. Tonight, we read "A New Hope" - and she pointed to the page with the Death Star blowing up and said "Bacca and Ham and Skywalka wen Def Star and BOOM!" Proud daddy moment right there, I tell ya!

Retirement on the Rocks: Why Americans Can't Get Ahead and How New Savings Policies Can Help, by Christian E. Weller

Review

"Weller provides a fresh, new perspective on the challenges that Americans face when saving for retirement. His account helps us all to think more clearly about the types of labor market and financial risks that families face, how they are changing, and their impact on Americans' retirement security. Weller argues that exposure to these risks has risen just as these risks have become greater, leaving people's retirement prospects diminished. Further, the account flows nicely into a discussion of his innovative policy ideas, which deserve serious consideration and debate. This book has much to offer to retirement scholars, policymakers, and the interested public worried about their economic security in retirement." - Sarah Rosen Wartell, President, Urban Institute, USA

"The vast majority of working Americans - including more than 40 percent of workers over age 50 - feel unprepared for their own retirement. Weller effectively describes how our current system undermines the goal of retirement security. But more importantly, he offers a broad set of solutions to improve retirement savings, investing and withdrawals and even update Social Security to help low income families. Too often people only look at a single quick fix that misses the complexity of all that is broken." - Debra Bailey Whitman, Executive Vice President, Policy, Strategy and International Affairs, AARP, USA

"Few issues vex Americans more than inadequate retirement preparation. And few books provide a clearer picture of the problem - and what can be done to fix it - than Weller's deeply researched analysis. Weller covers all the bases: the gaps in Social Security, the perils of employment-based accounts, the upside-down structure of tax breaks, and the huge financial barriers that stand between a risk-inundated middle class and sufficient retirement wealth. Perhaps most important, he lays out an ambitious but realistic path toward a stronger and fairer system that can provide the retirement security that so many Americans feel they have lost." - Jacob S. Hacker, Director of the Institution for Social and Policy Studies and Stanley B. Resor Professor of Political Science, Yale University, USA; author of The Great Risk Shift: The New Economic Insecurity and the Decline of the American Dream

Review of Weller's "Retirement on the Rocks: Why Americans Can't Get Ahead and How New Savings Policies Can Help" By James Henninger-Voss Read this book. I have been reading about retirement plans and retirement readiness for over a decade; this is a legitimately fresh approach. In the stormy seas of choppy labor markets and volatile financial markets, more and more Americans are finding themselves stranded without savings for retirement or adequate pension plans…and headed toward the rocks. This is the looming crisis economist Christian Weller examines with a new perspective on the conditions for shipwreck and policy suggestions for rescue.Americans face risks and risk exposure in two different areas of life that researchers and writers have treated separately until now: risk in the work place (labor market risks) and risk in their savings (financial market risks). Weller points out that these are intertwined when considering retirement funds. He looks at both of these areas simultaneously, essentially considering them both part of the same Retirement Readiness Portfolio (my term), to see just how much risk people have overall. Through this process, Weller arrives at important findings. Many Americans, for example, do not, and perhaps cannot, increase their savings in order to offset the risks of unemployment and underemployment. This means that those with increased labor market risks do not balance those risks with lower financial market risks. This is contrary to the notions drawn from the economic theory (neoclassical economics) that underlies a significant part of the government policies that are designed to help people prepare for retirement.Weller’s approach in linking the labor market conditions and the financial market volatility gives a fuller, more stereo-optic view of the challenges Americans face in planning for retirement, and his approach teases out the ramifications of distinguishing between risks and risk exposure in these markets. In financial markets, this distinction is clear: Risk is the chance of a particular stock performing below expected returns; risk exposure is the level of risk any one portfolio might experience. A well-balanced portfolio will limit the possible gains of high risk stocks with the less risky returns of bonds or other secured investments. To import this idea to the labor market, Weller examines how different segments of the population have different risks of unemployment according to their level of education, income, and race/ethnicity—and therefore different “risk exposure.” To consider the well-being of the population as a whole, we need to consider how much more risk and risk exposure some segments will have in comparison to others, how risks and risk exposure in the labor market link to risk and risk exposure in financial markets, and how we can limit the amount of risk the most vulnerable people face. For this review, I will focus on one example from one area in which the labor market and the financial markets intersect: employment-based retirement plans. One simple reason that employees have increased risk of not being prepared for retirement is that they may only be offered employment with an employer who does not offer a retirement plan. Even employees being offered plans face increasing challenges as a growing number of employers offer “individualized savings” plans rather than pooled savings plans to their employees. Weller argues that “[t]he shift toward individualized savings [such as 401k-style defined contribution plans] and away from pooled savings, such as DB [defined benefit] pensions, has not only increased the potential for more financial risk exposure but also raised the actual financial risk exposure of households.” (P. 74) The increased financial risk exposure occurred partly “because households have fewer risk protections in DC savings plans than in DB pension plans and they have systematically encountered obstacles to building meaningful risk protections with individualized savings.” (p. 74) Weller does a nice job of analyzing how this has happened, both because of policies and because of human nature, and I recommend you read these chapters for his full analysis. Part of Weller’s analysis is that DB plans help de-risk Retirement Readiness Portfolios because, in part, of pooled savings, annuitized benefits, and limited overall exposure thanks to the Federal Pension Benefit Guarantee Corporation (PBGC). I would have like to have seen Weller deliver on “addressing . . . policy shortcomings” that have contributed to “the decline of DB pensions.” (p. 131) Understandably, since a significant percentage of American employees are only offered individualized savings and because those with individualized savings are most at risk, Weller spends most of his time focusing on individualized savings options.Weller does a fairly thorough job of addressing retirement risks, but there is one type of retirement risk that, unless I overlooked it, he does not mention: inflation risk. I will briefly explain inflation risk to highlight that Weller’s estimates of the level of risk and risk exposure in US households may be conservative. Inflation risk for retirees is the risk that inflation in the prices of goods and services (notably, the costs of health care) will erode the value of whatever savings retirees start their retirement with. Generally speaking, retirees are expected to retire around age 65 and to live, on average, into their 80s. The value of their individual savings will need to withstand the increase in prices over a 20 year period or longer. Retirees, therefore, have to balance two different types of financial risks in retirement: the risk of volatility in the financial markets (Weller shows has increased over the past 30 years) and the risk that the prices of goods and services (including health care) will erode their savings. Avoiding financial market risk generally involves moving a greater share of savings into relatively stable investments, such as bonds. However, bonds have low rates of return. Low rates of return make it more likely that inflation will outpace investment returns, thus eroding retiree savings. Thus, policies that have promoted individualized savings have worked to increase the risk exposure of retirees to inflation risk, undermining even more the Retirement Readiness Portfolios of American households.Weller outlines five areas of focus for policy recommendations, including proposals that might help to stop the “erosion of Social Security’s protections,” but here I will only mention what I consider Weller’s most broadly useful idea: a “Universal Savings Credit.” A Universal Savings Credit is discussed as a possibility for policy recommendations that would help improve savings and reduce risk exposure for all households, and especially lower-income households.Among other things, a Universal Savings Credit could essentially change the method by which the government incentivizes retirement savings (among other things). Right now, government incentives come, in part, in the form of tax deductions. For example, the amount of taxes the government reimburses us for 401k or IRA contributions encourages us to save for retirement. One key part of this arrangement is that we are reimbursed for funds we have already spent in specific ways. Universal Savings Credits would also provide an incentive, but rather than us having to provide the money up-front for specific expenditures or investments (e.g. save all of the money in an account and then get reimbursed some of it), the government could give us “credit” for the money that we save, and then add the credit to our savings. The cost of the plan could be equal to the cost of the current method. Weller uses the example of a $2,000 401k savings. Currently, we may invest $2,000 in a 401k and then the government, through tax deductions, reimburses us for $300 (depending on tax bracket, etc.). Cost to us: $1,700. Cost to government: $300. Under the Universal Savings Credit, the method could be changed so that if we contribute $1,700 to our 401k, the government contributes another $300 to our 401k.One of the big benefits of a Universal Savings Credit is that people can use their $300 (from the above example) in the year that they earn it. This is especially helpful for people with lower incomes who simply cannot wait until April to use that $300. Another benefit is that Universal Savings Credit can be used to simplify the methods of saving for retirement. Weller shows that the complexity involved with the options of saving for retirement actually deters people from saving, and the Universal Savings Credit is a method that could help break down that barrier.Home mortgages are a big part of the Americans’ portfolios. Weller states that the Universal Savings Credit could help homeowners save in places other than their homes—which are illiquid, are likely to lose value when the stock market does (a big reason why household portfolios have high risk exposure), and can also be lost in employment downturns. Congress, Weller suggests, could use a Universal Savings Credit “to allow households to automatically deposit their tax refunds into tax-advantaged savings. Such an approach would increase savings outside of housing for all households because such savings would be both easy and tax-advantaged and because all households could qualify for the same maximum tax credit.” (p. 163)"Retirement on the Rocks" provides an important perspective on “Why Americans Can’t Get Ahead:” a perspective that finally puts together the two spheres that other academics and policy makers have to date looked at separately, as if they were unrelated. Weller shows that far from being unrelated, there is a significant relationship between the risks and risk exposure in the labor market and the risks and risk exposure in the financial market. Unfortunately, I doubt that most Americans even think of their own overall retirement readiness as a combined, interactive labor market and financial market outcome. This book appears to be an excellent starting point, not just for policymakers, but for teachers interested in financial education of their students, for human resource managers interested in helping their employees prepare for retirement (both by rethinking the retirement plans they offer, but also in rethinking what types of financial education to provide), for social activists interested in helping those who are least prepared for retirement, and for academics interested in fleshing out these relationships and in testing which policies may best address the combined risk and risk exposure that American household face from the labor and financial markets. Currently, most American workers are effectively being told that their retirement ship is sinking, and that they need to quickly learn to swim. If Weller’s policy proposals are correct, policy makers can provide a buoy to help us from drowning.

Excerpt from St. Francis of AssisiA sketch of St. Francis of Assisi in modem English may be written in one of three ways. Between these the writer must make his selection; and the third way, which is adopted here, is in some respects the most difficult of all. At least, it would be the most difficult if the other two were not impossible.First, he may deal with this great and most amazing man as a figure in secular history and a model of social virtues. He may describe this divine demagogue as being, as he probably was, the world's one quite sincere democrat. He may say (what means very little) that St. Francis was in advance of his age. He may say (what is quite true) that St. Francis anticipated all that is most liberal and sympathetic in the modem mood; the love of nature; the love of animals; the sense of social compassion; the sense of the spiritual dangers of prosperity and even of property. All those things that nobody understood before Wordsworth were familiar to St. Francis. All those things that were first discovered by Tolstoy had been taken for granted by St. Francis.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. St. Francis of Assisi (Classic Reprint), by G. K. Chesterton

About the Author Gilbert Keith Chesterton was born in London, England, in 1874. He went on to study art at the Slade School, and literature at University College in London. Chesterton wrote a great deal of poetry, as well as works of social and literary criticism. Among his most notable books are "The Man Who Was Thursday", a metaphysical thriller, and "The Everlasting Man", a history of humankind's spiritual progress. After Chesterton converted to Catholicism in 1922, he wrote mainly on religious topics such as "Orthodoxy" and "Heretics". Chesterton is most known for creating the famous priest-detective character Father Brown, who first appeared in "The Innocence of Father Brown". Chesterton died in 1936 at the age of 62.

Prolific and artistic, he had the knack for combining a classic British commentary sense to any historical Christian subject, making it both the object of cultural interest and often historic reverence. As St. Francis of Assisi was one of the primary influences on Chesterton's decision to convert to Roman Catholicism (Chesterton once described his conversion as being largely due to wanting to belong to the same institution that had produced St. Francis), it makes sense that Chesterton would devote considerable energies toward this biography.Chesterton said that there are essentially three ways to approach a biography of a figure such as St. Francis - one can be dispassionately objective (or at least as much as can pass for such a stance), looking at things from a 'purely' historical standpoint; one can go to the opposite extreme and treat the figure as an object of devotion and worship; or one can take a third path (and you've guessed correctly if you assumed this was Chesterton's route) of looking at the character as an interested outsider, someone in the modern world but still one involved in the same kinds of structures and virtues as the one being studied.Chesterton's prose is snappy and lively, witty and bit sardonic at times. Chesterton is not afraid to digress to make his own points, and like the intellectual critic who cannot contain the myriad of responses to particular points, Chesterton treats us to a generous collection of tangential observations. One discovers, for instance, Chesterton's opinion of modern British history (that it reads more like journalism than like a developed narrative) - he makes the observation that journalists rarely think to publish a 'life' until the death of the subject; this of course cannot be helped in the case of Francis of Assisi, but the method of the media serves to highlight the difference in world-view between then and now. This is a spiritual biography - it does not simply go from event to event in Francis' life, but rather looks as the development of his spirituality, his calling, his order and his influence in later church (and more general) history. In his discussion, he looks at miracles and poetic production, political realities and logical fallacies, ancient sentiments and present-day practices. Francis is seen in many ways as the Mirror of Christ (not quite the same thing as the WWJD fad of the current day, but approximating the sense in some regards), but this sets up an interesting logical situation - if Francis is like Christ, then Christ is in some ways like Francis. Chesterton points out the importance of the difference, likening it to the difference between creator and creature, but there is still the interesting development in history where some tried to make Francis a second Christ (something Francis himself would have opposed bitterly).Fun, fascinating, spiritual without succumbing to kitsch, intellectual without being overblown, this book is a classic on Francis, and a classic by Chesterton, a small miracle of Francis (in the many sense of the term).

By David Marshall The first time I read this book, I felt almost as impatient with Chesterton's "verbosity" and "hot air" as some of the reviewers below. In regard to the bare facts of Francis' life, one comes to feel a bit as Chesterton said of the Troubadours' lovers: "The reader realises that the lady is the most beautiful being that can possibly exist, only he has occasional doubts as to whether she does exist." Moments came when I found myself thirsting for dry facts. But I think the problem is that Chesterton assumes his readers, as educated persons of his period, know the story already, and only need to be enlightened as to its meaning. One can get facts anywhere. Few can take us inside the thinking of a man like Francis. And absolutely no one I know writes with such entertaining flair, of a healing kind so different from modern books and movies that wound our souls with their pleasures. On second reading, I find I enjoyed this episode about as much as the biography of Dickens -- which was very much. Chesterton looks at Francis, in varying cadences, from the inside, to help us think and feel as he did, then from the outside, as children of the Enlightenment, a two-perspective approach that gives us a rounded figure. Those of us who have no other knowledge of Francis may sometimes wonder how much of that figure is Francis and how much Chesterton, (who was, after all, probably the more rounded of the two). But the insights are always brilliant. And many still cut like daggers. (Or rather scalpels, to heal.) "We read that Admiral Bangs has been shot, which is the first intimation we have that he has ever been born." "The moment sex ceases to be a servant it becomes a tyrant." "All goods look better when they look like gifts." "There is only one intelligent reason why a man does not believe in miracles and that is that he does believe in materialism." Anyone who finds such digressions merely "hot air," would be best advised to keep to dry-as-dust historical commentaries, or skeptical comic books, as the case may be.This book is not so much a biography of a single man, as an episode in Chesterton's ongoing spiritual biography of mankind. It is one in a series of what Solzhenitsyn called "knots" and Thomas Cahill calls "hinges" of history. The series continues with Chesterton's equally subjective but enlightening biographies of Chaucer, Dickens, Joan of Arc, and modern "Heretics." He gives the outline of the project in the Everlasting Man, which is one of the most brilliant and wisest books of the century. As a non-Catholic Christian ("Protestant" would place the emphasis in the wrong place), I don't agree with Chesterton's take on the Albigensian Wars, and am more ambivalent about the Crusades than he. But he does not exactly justify the Inquisition, as the reader below implies; he admits that in later stages it was a "horrible thing that might be haunted by demons." How many modern leftists admitted that much about, say, the Russian Revolution? But I agree he may try to "understand" the sins committed by his side a little too hard.author, Jesus and the Religions of Man (July 2000)d.marshall@sun.ac.jp

By Patrick O'Mara I have just finished reading "St. Francis of Assisi" by GK Chesterton, and I know that it was pretty good. In fact, it may be very good, but I don't really understand it! If you know anything about GK Chesterton then you know that his books are deeper than the ocean. This one is no exception. If you are looking for a biography (the story of St. Francis throughout his entire life) then this is not the book for you. (I would suggest buying St. Boneventure's biography from Tan Books) This book is really an essay on the life of St. Francis. It is difficult reading, and not a bed-time story for your kids. I think for your benefit, it would be good to read a normal biography on St. Francis (like the one mentioned above) and then read this essay. That way, you will not be frustrated in not getting many stories of St. Francis's life, and you will have perhaps better understandings of what GK Chesterton is talking about. Anyway, if your a Chesterton fan, then I'm sure you will like this, but remember--- this is HARD TO READ.
