The mystery stains, hiddens gems and horrifically good times, oh the fun of it all.Quick and concise, bumps and creeps, a little terror for when that half-hour or so needs a jolt of the dastardly reigns cast onto the present by the remnants of the past.

Callum Hunt’s summer break isn’t like other kids’. His closest companion is a Chaos-ridden wolf, Havoc. His father suspects him of being secretly evil. And, of course, most kids aren’t heading back to the magical world of the Magisterium in the fall.   It’s not easy for Call . . . and it gets even harder after he checks out his basement and discovers that his dad might be trying to destroy both him and Havoc.   Call escapes to the Magisterium -- but things only intensify there. The Alkahest -- a copper gauntlet capable of separating certain magicians from their magic -- has been stolen. And in their search to discover the culprit, Call and his friends Aaron and Tamara awaken the attention of some very dangerous foes -- and get closer to an even more dangerous truth.   As the mysteries of the Magisterium deepen and widen, bestselling authors Holly Black and Cassandra Clare take readers on an extraordinary journey through one boy’s conflict -- and a whole world’s fate.

The Copper Gauntlet (Magisterium, Book 2), by Holly Black, Cassandra Clare

From School Library Journal Gr 4–7—In their follow-up to The Iron Trial (Scholastic, 2014), Black and Clare again return to the magical, alchemical world of the Magisterium, a school that neatly plays with the tropes of the magic school genre. At the conclusion of the last book, readers learned that the ostensible hero, Callum, was in fact the Enemy of Death—the villain who terrifies everyone in his magical world. When he discovers a plot seemingly orchestrated by his own father against the Magisterium, Call and his friends run away from school to try and save the magical world they love. Much of the action in this second installment takes place outside the claustrophobic caverns of the Magisterium, expanding the world Call and friends Tamara and Adam inhabit with mixed results. Credulity is stretched whenever any member of the group enters our mundane world—would giant wolves with glowing eyes and four 13-year-olds hot-wiring a car really go unnoticed by average people?—but other big set pieces, especially an epic battle against an ancient monster, thrill. There's plenty of action, adventure, and pathos here to even out the rough patches. VERDICT Fans of the previous volume will relish the continuing adventures of Call and his friends.—Elisabeth Gattullo Marrocolla, Darien Library, CT

A fun and riveting follow-up to The Iron Trial By Z Hayes “The Copper Gauntlet” is Book 2 in the Magisterium series by Holly Black and Cassandra Clare (who gave readers the riveting City of Bones series). Although both authors are more known for their teen books, the Magisterium series is aimed at tweens. There are shades of Harry Potter here since the series does focus on a school of magic. The main character Callum is one who suffers the agonies of being accepted which many tweens and teens can relate to; however, this need for belonging often leads to him making mistakes. Callum is however redeemed by his loyalty to his friends. Book 1, “The Iron Trial” was well-paced and interesting. In Book 2, the world of the Magisterium is delved into more deeply as Call and his best friends Aaron and Tamara work against the clock to discover the whereabouts of the copper gauntlet, a magical tool that could spell disaster if it falls into the wrong hands. Call is also accompanied by his loyal companion, Havoc, the chaos-ridden wolf. There are conflicts aplenty in this installment as Call suspects his own dad might consider Call to be a threat. The story in this second installment flows well but readers new to the series would be best advised to read “The Iron Trial” (Book 1) first.

We rejoin Call as he is on the summer break from the Magisterium where he had just completed his first year of study of magic known as the Iron year and is soon to return for his Copper year. Unfortunately Call’s father seems to have some shady plans set for Call and doesn’t want him to return forcing Call to run away. The authors do a wonderful job of quickly catching the reader up with the story and what had happened in the previous book right as you start off reading, no reason to fret if you might have forgotten some details since reading the first book. After a quick refresh we are again thrust back into the world of magic and details left from the first story yet to be resolved. Easy to get completely caught back up into the story and with Call and his friends on their adventures.Again, as with The Iron Trial, I really couldn’t tell that I was reading a book about a group of now thirteen year olds. Call and his fellow apprentices are very mature for their ages so without the occasional reminder to the reader I really think anyone of any age should enjoy this story if you love a good fantasy read. What is missing from the normal young adult fantasy is the lack of a love triangle between the two male characters and their female friend. Being kids, they are all truly a group of friends that care for each other no matter the odds. Some great action with the current story line and a good opening at the end to leave the reader wanting to know how the story will continue. Looking forward to reading the next in this five book series next year and would highly recommend all the fantasy lovers to give this one a shot.I won this book from Goodreads First Reads, receiving a free copy in no way reflects upon my review and all thoughts are my own.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. This sequel is awesome. The characters are the very best. By Carina's Books I loved reading this book. The one year wait for it was worth it. But a bit too long, lol. I enjoyed everything about this book. I just, I really wish it had been longer. Two hundred and sixty pages is way too short. Hmph. But they were excellent pages. And I loved every word. Sigh. The writing is very gorgeous. This book is also from the point of view of Call. And I loved that very much. Because Call is still my favorite person. And getting to know him better is all kinds of fun. I love how his leg is a bit broken. How much it hurts him. Okay, that breaks my heart, but still. I love how great it is written. It was so good to read about. All five books will be like five years at the magic school, I think. Or they might not take that much time. Either way, I'm so excited about reading more. This one takes place a few weeks after the end of The Iron Trial. With Call and Havoc back home with his father. And oh. Things aren't going very well. Since his dad doesn't want him to go to the school. And because of the secret Call has. Sigh. I wish they didn't have any issues with each other; as I think I adore them both. But anyway. I loved the beginning of this book. It is exciting and awesome and I loved it. But a bit evil too. Poor Havoc, shudders. Things could have gone really wrong. But they didn't. And Call got away; to Tamara. Where Aaron was staying too. Was a bit awkward.I felt like Call was a bit jealous in this book. But only for a sort time, I think. And I also very much understood him. As he thinks one time, Tamara will always pick Aaron before him. Which hurts a bit, sigh. But even so. I liked this friendship so much. Call and Aaron are awesome. I do like Tamara a lot too. But I had some issues with her. I didn't like how she sort of betrayed Call. So not okay. But I felt like she made up for it near the end; she stood up for him. So I do like her. But only ever as their friend :)Call is a bit more jealous of Aaron this time. But he shouldn't be. My heart just aches for Aaron. He is such a cute boy. And so so very kind. But yeah. He has no family anymore. He has no one. And that just hurts my heart. Hmph. But yeah. I loved his friendship with Call. Just wish the book had been longer so that I could have seen it more. Hopefully in the next one. All three are great friends; which I liked. We also see a bit more of Celia in this book; I adored that. She's pretty amazing. Still shipping her and Call. There is also a whole other bunch of awesome characters in this book. More creatures too. Shudders. Some were pretty bad. But I loved reading about them all. We also see much more of Jasper in this one. And while he is still so mean towards Call, he is also sort of kind. And I have grown to love him a lot more. Unless he talks about what happened near the end of the book. Hmph. He better not. Most I loved reading about Call. He is the very best. So awesome. And his chaos dog, Havoc. He is just the cutest. While this book is short, it is also full of amazing things. The plot is awesome. I loved reading about everything that happened. About Call visiting with Tamara. About him going to a party at her very huge house. And how different it was an how awesome too. And reading more about Alex, whom is older, whom I grew to like a lot. I'm not sure if I want him to be with Tamara's sister. She didn't treat him all that well. Hmph. But yeah. I'm all kinds of curious about it even so, lol. So much amazing in this book.We learn more about the Enemy of Death in this one too. Which is still such a silly nickname, lol. But I kind of like it too. And, ugh. He seemed like an awful person. And he died so young. And poor Call with his secret, and him trying not to be evil, and it just broke my heart. But Call is still just Call. And I want him to always be that. Don't he dare change or die. I want a happy ending for Call. And Aaron. And for them to be best of friends. Sigh. Anyway. Point is. The plot is exciting and interesting and I loved it lots. While I wish this book had been longer, I also loved it very much. I'm giving it five stars. Because the writing is gorgeous. The characters are all so so amazing. The plot is exciting and interesting. This book just means so much to me. It's awesome. You must all read this book. Read and love it. Which you will. Because it's the best. The Copper Gauntlet is such a stunning sequel. It is exciting and horrifying and so much fun. All the characters are written so well. I could not have loved this book more. It is awesome.

There is no way anyone can explain quantum theory to the beginner or non-scientist by diving right into the subject. That's why this subject is presented in three, easy-to-read volumes. Quantum is just too weird if we look only to our experiences in the world around us to try to validate what scientists understand about quantum theory and quantum physics. Instead, we need to sneak up on it, building our knowledge slowly, recognizing anomalies, trying to explain conundrums and seeming impossibilities, testing and discarding and rebuilding ideas, and validating our theories experimentally, bit by bit until at least some of quantum begins to make sense. This three volume series seeks to make enough sense to satisfy you without the need for hard physics and mathematics. Volume 1 The Universe is Made Up of “Stuff” introduces the beginnings of scientific inquiry into the makeup of the "stuff" of our universe. By the start of the 20th Century scientists had begun to realize that they knew less about this "stuff" than they thought they did.

About the Author Near the beginning in his career with IBM Irwin Tyler revealed a diverse talent for engineering and the sciences (an earlier degree in Civil Engineering and subsequent NY State License in Civil Engineering), for software system design and development, and for advanced research (issued a U.S. Patent in Artificial Intelligence). When IBM discovered his writing ability they provided him a platform for writing several marketing guides for the company, as well as a multimedia presentation. It was during this period that he wrote, produced, and directed two local plays with theological themes. After Irwin’s retirement from IBM he truly found his writing calling, producing to this point ten books (visit his web site http://AhlKaynBooksandArtWork.com), more than forty published Articles and Letters to the Editor (including Science News, Newsmax, In These Times, USAA Magazine) and has developed a growing career as a ghost writer. His ability to make the complex understandable without compromising accuracy is a hallmark of his works.

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. The Illustrated Man of Letters By Jay Dickson John Forster was Dickens's best friend and closest companion for almost the entirety of his adult life. His biography of the great man, which came out soon after Dickens's death, surprised Victorian readers with the truths it laid out about Dickens's childhood traumas (particularly working in a blacking factory when his father was in debtors' prison). It remains one of the most famous of all English biographies, and was reissued in this beautiful edition in 2011, the bicentenary year of Dickens' birth. Weighing in at more than five pounds, this beautiful new edition comes complete with all kinds of rare images and with helpful and illuminating supporting materials drawn from a number of media. The editor, Holly Furneaux, should be proud of the splendid work she did assembling this text, which should be indispensable for any Dickens fan or scholar.

6 of 7 people found the following review helpful. The Life of Charles Dickens By Alex Melendez The book itself is beautiful -- beautiful illustrations, photographs and pictures. But is it not a replacement for the original extended biography. It is however, a wonderful addition to any Charles Dickens literature. *****

By Kimba the quality of the book is...well...it's like a photocopy of the original book and since getting an original edition would mean having to sell my house, i am grateful for this beautiful and well copied piece. the cover is gorgeous, isn't it? i've dabbled in the reading of it, but have been wanting a copy of Forster's biographical Dickens for a long time. i recommend it, but it is odd to get used to the way the original manuscript sits rather small on each page...

Vermont is a small and, by any standard, a well botanized state---beginning with a list of Vermont's trees and other economic plants in 1795, continuing through four editions of the Flora of Vermont, up to the summary Check List of Vermont Plants by the Vermont Botanical Club in 1973. Why the New Flora of Vermont? So many advances in the last 40 years warrant striking out anew: taxonomic advances have resulted from the wave of molecular data since the discovery of DNA and the powerful analytical technique of cladistics, there has been an increase in floristic knowledge of Vermont's local flora in the intervening decades; and an emphasis on potential threats to indigenous flora, e.g., by invasive species, has added several new items. In this up-to-date volume, Art Gilman strikes out anew, following recent advances and current thinking, while contributing to Vermont's long and significant botanical heritage.

George Bernard Shaw (Classic Reprint), by Gilbert K. Chesterton

About the Author Gilbert Keith Chesterton was born in London, England, in 1874. He went on to study art at the Slade School, and literature at University College in London. Chesterton wrote a great deal of poetry, as well as works of social and literary criticism. Among his most notable books are "The Man Who Was Thursday", a metaphysical thriller, and "The Everlasting Man", a history of humankind's spiritual progress. After Chesterton converted to Catholicism in 1922, he wrote mainly on religious topics such as "Orthodoxy" and "Heretics". Enjoyable disagreement By Melody Green Since Chesterton and Shaw so vehemently disagreed with each other on many topics, one would expect this quick text to be filled with antagonism. Instead, it is a delightful explanation of Shaw's background, biography and beliefs, told in a gentle, light-hearted manner. Chesterton shows a great respect for his adversary, while making clear his own views through quite a few of the one-sentence quotables for which he is well known.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Words vs presentation. By David You can't go wrong with Chesterton; particularly when he is describing one of his contemporaries. Like the majority of Chesterton's biographies, this book won't tell you many "facts" about GBS, but it will present a solid, complete, and enjoyable picture of Shaw as a man: giving his opinions and criticizing them. I only give it three stars because the page layout is - frankly - defective. The print is offset to the outer side of each page. If you can ignore this (I cannot), the book is perfectly accessible.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. You Have to like him By Don You have to like reading biographies to work through this one, he is a different and unusual character and the book gives you a good inkling of life in those times. His writings are more than worth while reading.

Ever wondered what a hospital is like in Asia? What it would be like to go for routine surgery in a country where you were a foreigner? How would you discuss important medical decisions in a language you barely speak? I never once considered it. But then I got a hernia. The repair of a hernia being a routine surgery, I had decided to get it taken care of quickly and easily. Until I saw the price tag. $10,000 US dollars to get myself stitched up. Giving up on the idea, I resigned myself to never being able to pick up heavy objects or cough too hard ever again. And then I moved to Taiwan. With national health care, the surgery would cost a tempting $0. That's right, it was free. And all I had to do was navigate a complicated, bureaucratic medical system in Chinese. What could possibly go wrong? This is a true story of medical misadventure told with humor and self-deprecating wit. Read on to laugh, cry, and wince in pain. Especially that last one. Seriously, if you don't want to read about the foibles of serious surgical hi-jinks, then maybe check out some heartwarming pictures of kittens or a dog befriending a deer. For the rest of us, Adventures in Asia await! Read on, brave souls! Read on!

This was actually a SHORT story but a lot of fun and a little fear. Can you imagine having surgery in a foreign country--the Dr speaks english but not the staff so much. Anyway--it was funny and an insight into how some of us might feel where ever we have surgery. I recomment this book.

Colorado Billionaires Christmas 2015 by Regina Duke By AUNT BEE COLORADO BILLIONAIRES CHRISTMAS 2015ARC provided in exchange for an honest reviewThree books all 5 Star stories. Enjoy, I certainly did JINGLE BELL MAGIC ( Well, Jingle My Heartstrings!)I quite enjoyed the book as it was a story within a story that was heartwarming.Mina is in her shop thinking about the upcoming wedding of Madelyn (her shop mgr.and) and Kirby. It seems everyone has their special someone but her. Okay, and Kirby's valet, Brewster, but Brewster would never look at her in a special way, would he?As Mina falls asleep, we are transported to an earlier time, a time before electricity and it seems while much is the same, everything is not as it should be.Terrific story for Christmas as you'll discover what her friends she typically shares Christmas with have to do with Santa, elves, and escaped flying reindeer.Lest we forget, does Mina get her own special someone for Christmas ?JINGLE BELL WEDDINGChristmas, a missed opportunity for a high school romance, and a second chance at love.Faith has come home to accept a job as a nanny. After Reno, school and a shameful secret it is time to put it all behind her.George was sent to the Garrison's to let the interviewee know why they weren't home. After discovering it was Faith, George decides to take her out for a bite to get reacquainted. Both Faith and George have things in their past that worry them that if brought to light the other may turnaround and run.How do they move forward without leaving their past behind? Can Faith ever get away from her part of her mistake that is stalking her? What has George done that is so shameful that it took his belief in all the possibilities to do any, be anything, that were with him prior to Faith leaving after high school?Small town warmth, a rocky road to an HEA, but done so beautifully5 Stars and a lingering warmth in my heart.JINGLE BELL ROMANCEJasmine is working through the Christmas Holidays, when she'd rather be able to spend them going to visit her brother and his family. As luck would have it, Jasmine is running late for work and to top it off, a fender bender. Okay, the Mercedes is essentially fine, but Jasmine's vehicle is a lost cause.Ryan's first impression left upon his arrival is that of a less than stellar driver, and a lawyer too! Not the impression he wants to make.Ryan has been sent to Eagle's Toe, Colorado to get no less than three new corporate clients and report back to his boss on Christmas day. Is this the life he really wants? The more time Ryan spends in Eagle's Toe, Colorado with its wonderful people and more importantly Jasmine, the more he Ryan sees (with his heart) what this town has to offer. It is a beautiful story of opening your eyes and heart to what matters most in life and then going for it!

The snow also brings out the love in people as well for celebrating the holidays and love. It's always nice to wish about a true love or just meeting something that you may find attractive. I like how Regina chose to have Mina dream out something out of the ordinary. Loved the ending of the story, it was a wonderful romance. It was a wonderful story!Jingle Bell Wedding by Regina DukeThe town has a great name, it so different. The mystery of no one around but the dogs. It was sad story as well as happiness. I like how Faith came in contact if an old friend from her past to make her feel welcome to her old home town. I like how they reconnect after all these years. It was well written and wonderful how it was told.Jingle Bell Romance by Regina DukeI like how Regina chose to taking the been part of the story. There are always people that are alone and struggling at the holidays and far from family. I like how Regina brought Ryan's character in to the picture. It's a perfect character to get him out of his scrooge mood. The town opens his eyes to life in a small town and the holidays. Finding someone he could be interested in and maybe fall in love. I liked the suspense of the story and I loved the ending.

By susie Three clean, sweet, romances in Christmas format, ready to start off your new year in warmth and happinessFall in love with Mina, Faith, and Jasmine, and the men that complete them. Three great happily ever after Christmas stories for us all. I am glad i got to read these in the New Year, as we tend to be too busy during the holiday season to just kick back, relax, and get our romantic menu selected, studied, and completed.Any book, or collection of books with Regina Duke as author, and Handsome Colorado Billionaires as subjects, is worth your time to open and read. One might surmise that our Billionaires, just by the imagined charastics of a billionaire, would run over our sweet heroines, but part of the genius of Regina Duke is her heroines are all strong, independent women, who need a man not to save them, but to fulfill them. All three of these books will grab your interest, and keep you turning those pages, hardly being able to wait to see what happens. Thanks y’all for taking time to read my review, oh and Cookie the wonder dog gave these books 2 paws up for sure, I think she would give this 4 paws up, but she needs at least 2 feetsies to stand on. Any book or collection that makes me sit quietly or lie down in our big fluffy bed quietly is a winner with Cookie, aka the Cuddle Dog

A tour of the astronomy of the Bible by a major British astronomer and Bible-believer at the turn of the 20th century, for whom the "Maunder Minimum" was named. Discusses the various astronomical bodies, the constellations, times and seasons, and three astronomical marvels narrated in scripture: Joshua's long day, the dial of Ahaz, and the star of Bethlehem. Two Christian scientist-theologians have added annotations in footnotes, indicating places where the work can be updated and clarified, based on more recent studies.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Great book, and a real eyeopener By David C. Bossard A remarkable book from the early 1900s (this is 3rd edition, 1922). Quite readable. Most chapters are short and to the point, and with lots of illustrations. There are over 30 footnotes added by the editors to give updated information. But the basic thesis of the book is quite valid: that the Bible contains a remarkable amount of information about astronomy in that ancient time. And that the critical theories which view the first books as a late cut-and-paste from various sources with agendas, are in error. The only true agenda of the Biblical authors is to give a faithful account of the true God of the Bible, in a culture saturated with paganism. The critics have the origin of the Creation and Flood accounts exactly reversed: the Babylonian tales are demonstrably later than the Biblical stories. And Maunder, unlike so many of the theologian critics, actually knows what he talks about. Great book, and a real eyeopener. Don't mean to imply that I agree with every conclusion, but it is a fairly argued treatment, and gives much food for thought. Maunder, by the way, was a well-respected astro-physicist from before the days of relativity. He discovered what is now known as the Maunder Minimum—an analysis of sunspot activity over the past centuries. Another great book that also proves that the Bible Criticism is wrong in dating the book of Daniel is Nabonidus and Belshazzar: A Study of the Closing Events of the Neo-Babylonian Empire (Ancient Near East: Classic Studies). It's a bit technical, but the conclusion is that Daniel had to have been written around 530 BC.

With stunning visuals and encyclopedic insight, the author of The Heights and The Works reveals how humans move across the globe by land, sea, and air In our digital age, it’s easy to forget that almost everything we enjoy about modern life depends on motion. We ride in cars and on buses and trains to work; enjoy food shipped over oceans; fly high in the sky to any point on the planet. Over the last century, the world has come to rely on its ability to move just about anywhere effortlessly. But what prompted this transformation? What inventions allowed it to happen? And how do the vehicles and systems that keep us in motion today—airports, trains, cars, and satellites—really work?Exploring our incredible interconnected world is the task of Kate Ascher’s The Way to Go: Moving by Sea, Land, and Air. Lusciously illustrated and meticulously researched, The Way to Go reveals the highly complex and largely invisible network of global transportation. How is cargo moved from inland factory to seaside port, and how is it transferred from shore to ship? How do ships and planes navigate their routes without landmarks? What happens under the hood of a car or in the undercarriage of a people mover? How did planes become cheaper than ships or trains? Why are some spaceships reusable and others not? What tools are needed to build today’s immense bridges and tunnels, and what ensures they don’t collapse? How does a helicopter really stay aloft? What happens when lightning strikes an airplane or when one satellite crashes with another? What will the car of tomorrow look like?Focusing on the machines that underpin our lives, Ascher’s The Way to Go also introduces the systems that keep those machines in business—the emergency communication networks that connect ships at sea, the automated tolling mechanisms that maintain the flow of highway traffic, the air control network that keeps planes from colliding in the sky. Equally fascinating are the technologies behind these complex systems: baggage-tag readers that make sure people’s bags go where they need to; automated streetlights that adjust their timing based on traffic flow; GPS devices that pinpoint where we are on earth at any second. Together these technologies move more people farther, faster, and more cheaply than at any other time in history. As our lives and our businesses become more entwined with others across the globe, there has never been a better time to understand how transportation works. Indispensable and unforgettable, Kate Ascher’s The Way to Go is a gorgeous graphic guide to a world moving as never before.

The Way to Go: Moving by Sea, Land, and Air, by Kate Ascher

Review Slate.com “Is it possible to write a stunning book about infrastructure? Kate Ascher’s books are bliss for engineering-minded adults and children. Using gorgeous graphics and clear, simple, language, Ascher explains the infrastructure and engineering marvels around us. As David Macaulay won over a generation to architecture in the ’70s and ’80s with books like Castle and Underground, Ascher is enticing children to engineering, urban planning, and infrastructure.”

Praise for THE HEIGHTS:

“In this lushly illustrated book, Ms. Ascher meticulously and lucidly deconstructs the design of manmade towers from the foundation on up to the imperatives of physical and psychological security in a terror-conscious society.” –NEW YORK TIMES

“Kate Ascher’s 2005 book, THE WORKS: ANATOMY OF A CITY, was essentially a wiring diagram of the city of New York—every city, really—intricately detailing the mechanics of urban infrastructure… Now Ascher’s back with another eye-widening piece of illustrated deconstruction, this one on the most enduring symbol of city life… THE HEIGHTS features more than 200 pages of explanations, diagrams, and remarkable stories.” – WIRED Magazine

“The book contains graphics that tell you everything about how buildings are designed, constructed, even lit.” –NEW YORK POST***Praise for THE WORKS:“THE WORKS is both a reference guide and a geeky pleasure.” –TIME OUT NEW YORK“It’s a rare person who won’t find something of interest in THE WORKS, whether it’s an explanation of how a street-sweeper works or the view of what’s down a manhole.” –NEW YORK POST

About the Author Kate Ascher serves on the faculty of Columbia University’s Graduate School of Architecture, Planning, and Preservation and manages Happold Consulting’s U.S. practice. Prior to taking up her current positions, she worked at the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, the New York City Economic Development Corporation, and Vornado Realty Trust. Her books include The Works: Anatomy of a City and The Heights: Anatomy of a Skyscraper.

In The Way We Go, we ask how the world works, and get fantastic detail over not just the obvious, but the minute - how ship buoy's work, what are ship propellers, etc etc. Entertaining, and highly enjoyable!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Kate Ascher-The David Macaulay for Adults By Marco Antonio Abarca I am a liberal arts person. I do not have what it takes to be a civil engineer. Nevertheless, I am fascinated by the built up environment that surrounds me. Infrastructure is so pervasive that most of us do not even notice it. Infrastructure makes our modern lives possible and yet we take it all for granted! Kate Ascher's gift is to take complicated infrastructure and explain for the common person. She did a beautiful job in her previous two books, "The Works" and "The Heights". "The Way to Go" takes her winning formula and extends it to transportation infrastructure. Like her two previous books, "The Way to Go" is beautifully written and illustrated. I hope she keeps on writing books. There is a lot of infrastructure that I still do not understand. In my mind, Kate Ascher is the David Macaulay for adults. High recommended!

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A great book for inquiring minds of all ages By J. Hulbert I bought this book for my son, who's six and a very precocious reader. I sneak it away from him periodically to read it myself. It is by no means a children's book, but it's illustrations are clean and easy to follow, and it's a wonderful book for people (like my son) who are fascinated by how things work.
