Excerpt from On Heroes, Hero-Worship and the Heroic in HistoryThe task of the commentator on the trail of his facts is like that set the Irish herd-boy in the folk-tale, when he lost the heifers, namely, to search "every place likely and unlikely for them all to be in." The first part of this roving commission, it is possible, with time and luck, to execute; but to hunt the shy allusions, the remote quotations, the deep-lurking bits of information, through every "unlikely" covert, forms a too extensive programme. Indeed, the editor comes at last to a point, when he feels that nothing further can be effected by organized search. It is only by pure chance, when looking for other things, that he can hope to run across the fugitive erudition which will make his commentary as full as it should be. This is sadly true of any one who would edit Carlyle. In annotating Heroes, I have aimed at compression, and striven, as in Sartor Resartus, to make the author supply the comment on his own work. Some things which would tend to enlightenment I have not been able to find, and I have said so in my Notes, in the hope that better scholars will discover them. Only after many toilsome hours did I give over the pursuit of any one. Fortunately Heroes needs little explanation; the difficulties are few.The text used as a basis is that of the People's Edition, 1871-1874. It has been diligently compared with those of the first three editions, of 1841, 1842, and 1846; and the results of the collation are placed at the foot of the page. In the process of reprinting, year after year, some score or so of printer's errors had crept in. These have been silently corrected; otherwise the text is as Carlyle left it.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. On Heroes, Hero-Worship and the Heroic in History (Classic Reprint), by Thomas Carlyle

Review "Here one glimpses Carlyle as a nimble personality with stimulating ideas. What makes this edition especially welcome is Carl Niemeyer's astute introduction."—The Pacific Historian (The Pacific Historian)

From the Inside Flap "How great he was! He made history a song for the first time in our language. He was our English Tacitus."—Oscar Wilde"A definitive text . . . a crucial standard for further study of Carlyle."—David Nordloh, Indiana University"The publication of the first scholarly and fully annotated edition of On Heroes is a major intellectual event."—J. Hillis Miller, University of California, Irvine

From the Back Cover From its first pages the book recognizes the intimate connections between heroism and myth. Beginning with the legends of Odin, lord of the Nordic gods, Carlyle describes major forms that heroism can take: in god, poet, warrior, priest, prophet, and king.

By A Customer Carlyle is not properly a historian or a philosopher, but a moralist, a fervent admirer of excellence, and a prose-poet of the first rank. Six meditations deal respectively of the hero as: Divinity, Prophet, Poet, Priest, Man of Letters, and King. If this book can't rightly be shelved with philosophy or history, it belongs in Literature with a capital "L," and Poetry. Carlylye loved the English Language and used it masterfully, energetically, and reverentially, without a trace of the trivial overindulgence of self-conscious and self-absorbed "poets."

20 of 22 people found the following review helpful. Praise for the individual By Guillermo Maynez Six lectures delivered by Carlyle in 1840. He classifies six kinds of heroes: as Divinity (Wotan, paganism); Prophet (Mohamed); Poet (Dante, Shakespeare); Priest (Luther, Knox); Man of Letters (Johnson, Rousseau, Burns); and Ruler (Cromwell, Napoleon). The trait that defines a hero is: absolute sincerity and firm belief in his principles. In his highly rhetorical lectures, Carlyle highlights and reinforces the role of the individual in the social process, as opposed to the role of the masses. And he did that precisely when the foundations were being laid for the most influential "pro-mass" movement in History: Marxism. The tragedy of Marxism, at least one of them all, is that, when translated into action, the blind masses were also led by "heroes" of the most authocratic sort. Not properly the work of an historian, these lectures are vivid, inflamed and enthusiast. Their uselfuness for our present age is precisely that they remind us of the crucial role significant individuals play in history, to accelerate or slow down (and even reverse) the process of social change, which is usually more gradual, diffused, and diverse.

27 of 32 people found the following review helpful. We can't do without Heroes By Ethan A. D. This is an extraordinary work, let modern liberal critics say what they will of their 'mass movements' and 'diversity'. Long after they and their productions have bitten the dust, Carlyle will continue to speak to the enlightened few, and perhaps one day, it is to be hoped, to the enlightened many. This work is much more than just a study of various influential men in history. Carlyle has very interesting notions of the historical process itself, the spread of religions and their demise, the importance of "true belief" in things, as opposed the unbelief that merely follows rituals and procedures. For Carlyle, true belief, is the beginning of morality, all success, all good things in this world; Unbelief, scepticism, the beginning of all corruption, quackery, falsehood.Unbelief, for instance, is at the root of all materialist philosophies, eg Utilitarianism which find human beings to be nothing more than clever, pleasure-seeking bipeds. It is also at the root of all democratic theories: faith in a democratic system means despair of finding an honest man to lead us.Whether one agrees with Carlyle or not in his appraisal of democratic and other systems, one must admit, at least, that very little good is to be gotten from "the checking and balancing of greedy knaveries." If we have no honest men in government or in business, but only a bunch of self-interested quacks, then we cannot expect any system, however ingenious, to save us. Even the most skilled architect will not be able to construct a great building, if you give him only hollow, cracked bricks to build it with. Find your honest men, says Carlyle, and get them into the positions of influence; only then will it be well with you.

According to Egyptian mythology, when the ancient Egyptian sun god Re cried, his tears turned into honey bees upon touching the ground. For this reason, the honey bee was sacrosanct in ancient Egyptian culture. From the art depicting bees on temple walls to the usage of beeswax as a healing ointment, the honey bee was a pervasive cultural motif in ancient Egypt because of its connection to the sun god Re. Gene Kritsky delivers a concise introduction of the relationship between the honey bee and ancient Egyptian culture, through the lenses of linguistics, archeology, religion, health, and economics. Kritsky delves into ancient Egypt's multifaceted society, and traces the importance of the honey bee in everything from death rituals to trade. In doing so, Kritsky brings new evidence to light of how advanced and fascinating the ancient Egyptians were. This richly illustrated work appeals to a broad range of interests. For archeology lovers, Kritsky delves into the archeological evidence of Egyptian beekeeping and discusses newly discovered tombs, as well as evidence of manmade hives. Linguists will be fascinated by Kritsky's discussion of the first documented written evidence of the honeybee hieroglyph. And anyone interested in ancient Egypt or ancient cultures in general will be intrigued by Kritsky's treatment of the first documented beekeepers. This book provides a unique social commentary of a community so far removed from modern humans chronologically speaking, and yet so fascinating because of the stunning advances their society made. Beekeeping is the latest evidence of how ahead of their times the Egyptians were, and the ensuing narrative is as captivating as every other aspect of ancient Egyptian culture.

Information about bees, honey, and beekeeping in ancient Egypt By Debbie "The Tears of Re" described the currently available information about bees, honey, and beekeeping in ancient Egypt. Apparently, we know very little about ancient beekeeping practices, though we know they did it and they even had an administrative structure based around it. The author gave detailed descriptions of the existing visual evidence in tombs and temples related to bees, honey, and beekeeping. He described what can still be seen, what parts have been destroyed, and the different theories about what, exactly, the scenes depict. He also included what ancient written sources say about beekeeping, the worth of honey, how honey was used in food and medicine, how beeswax was used, and the various myths about the origin and purpose of bees. He provided several translations of various texts that he quoted so we could get a good feel for what was meant. He also talked about beekeeping practices that were used in Egypt until recently which look very similar to the ancient visual record. It's a short book, but it did a nice job of presenting the available information about beekeeping practices and bee products used in ancient Egypt. I'd recommend it to those seriously interested in the topic.I received an ebook review copy of this book from the publisher through NetGalley.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A well told story. By Mark in Cincinnati Because I enjoyed reading Dr. Kritsky’s book "The Quest for the Perfect Hive" I looked forward to reading "The Tears of Re". I was not disappointed. The story of beekeeping in ancient Egypt across the millennia is very interesting and the inclusion of a chronology in the beginning of the book made the long Egyptian history easy to follow. The chapter on the honey bee hieroglyph and the chapter on healing are probably my favorites. The use of photographs and drawings of specific archaeological sites detailed in the writing is most helpful. The fact that there are many illustrations is wonderful.

3 of 4 people found the following review helpful. The Tears of Re By J. Hamby As a compendium of beekeeping as recorded in Ancient Egypt this gets four stars. But as a read? It is just too dry. And that is sad since the author's interest and expertise come through here and there. Amid what is nothing more, too often, of list after list of tomb inscriptions and records, there is some wonderful writing by Kritsky that underscores the enthusiasm that prompted such a book. But for me it was mere sentences. Maybe a paragraph at most. And then the return to rote citation. And that is a disappointment. Particularly at a time when the importance of bees and their place in the environment still gets ignored at our peril. Getting a glimpse of how long and how important bees have been in one of the oldest and most enduring civilizations that impacted the rest of the world and its growth was fantastic. Unfortunately I just feel we barely get even a glimpse through an expert's eyes. Maybe a hint instead; it almost felt more like I was reading a great book's bibliography and notes.

The Mesoamerican population who lived near the indigenous cultivation sites of the "Chocolate Tree" (Theobromo cacao) had a multitude of documented applications of chocolate as medicine, ranging from alleviating fatigue to preventing heart ailments to treating snakebite. Until recently, these applications have received little sound scientific scrutiny. Rather, it has been the reputed health claims stemming from Europe and the United States which have attracted considerable biomedical attention. This book, for the first time, describes the centuries-long quest to uncover chocolate's potential health benefits. The authors explore variations in the types of evidence used to support chocolate's use as medicine as well as note the ongoing tension over categorizing chocolate as food or medicine, and more recently, as functional food or nutraceutical. The authors, Wilson an historian of science and medicine, and Hurst an analytical chemist in the chocolate industry, bring their collective insights to bear upon the development of ideas and practices surrounding the use of chocolate as medicine. Chocolate's use in this manner is explored first among the Mesoamerican peoples, then as it is transported to Europe, and back into Colonial North America. The authors then focus upon more recent bioscience experimental undertakings which have been aimed to ascertain both long-standing and novel suggestions as to chocolate's efficacy as a medicinal and a nutritional substance. Chocolate/s reputation as the most craved food boosts this book's appeal to food and biomedical scientists, cacao researchers, ethnobotanists, historians, folklorists, and healers of all types as well as to the general reading audience.

Review "The title alone of Chocolate in Medicine, a Quest over the Centuries by P.K. Wilson and W.J. Hurst would make it irresistible and it is indeed immensely readable.""chocolate is clearly an important ingredient of the Royal Society of Chemistry: so successful was their Science of Chocolate (2000) that a revised edition was called for in 2008 and articles in their journal, Food and Function, have such titles as 'Oral processing of two milk chocolate samples'. If this had been included in the O-level practical classes perhaps I should have continued with chemistry." (Peter Hawkes Ultramicroscopy 137 (2014) 72–92)"The authors of Chocolate as Medicine start their dissertation from this definition, tracing the history of chocolate as medicine and providing very interesting glimpses into it's current use. The book summarises the best evidence available from science to support and confirm the health benefits of chocolate.""Recent studies have now provided the evidence to a century's established use of chocolate as medicine and this enjoyable book reconstructs this path, providing an inter-disciplinary approach, thanks to the complementary skills of the two authors." (Reviewed by Donatella Lippi Chemistry World, July 2013, Volume 10, number 07)

Exercise for the muscle between your ears, and 'bubble gum' for same By ERIC M JOHNSON Growing up, I very much enjoyed reading the Sugar Creek Gang, Hardy Boys, and Tom Swift series young adult books. If you want to stimulate that muscle between your children and grand-children's ears in an enjoyable way, read this book & the series to them, or encourage them to read these on their own...or you can watch them play video games and atrophy their skeletal muscles and brains in equal proportions.

PDF Ebook Treadmill of Production: Injustice and Unsustainability in the Global Economy (The Sociological Imagination), by Kenneth A. Gould, David N. Pellow, Allan Schnaiberg

Schnaiberg's concept of the treadmill of production is arguably the most visible and enduring theory to emerge in three decades of environmental sociology. Elaborated and tested, it has been found to be an accurate predictor of political-economic changes in the global economy. In the global South, it has figures prominently in the work of structural environmental analysts and has been used by many political-economic movements. Building new extensions and applications of the treadmill theory, this new book shows how and why northern analysts and governments have failed to protect our environment and secure our future. Using an empirically based political-economic perspective, the authors outline the causes of environmental degradation, the limits of environmental protection policies, and the failures of institutional decision-makers to protect human well-being.

Treadmill of Production: Injustice and Unsustainability in the Global Economy (The Sociological Imagination), by Kenneth A. Gould, David N. Pellow, Allan Schnaiberg

Review In 'The Treadmill of Production' Gould, Pellow, and Schnaiberg offer a theoretically driven explanation for our global environmental predicament that makes a great deal of sense. Their book represents an essential point of departure for understanding and addressing the challenges of controlling global environmental change in the 21st century.--Thomas K. Rudel, Rutgers UniversityFew works of social science prove enduring, much less prophetic. Allan Schnaiberg's environmental sociology, first introduced in the 1980s and premised on the treadmill of production, is here refashioned for the challenges of Twenty-first Century globalization. Schnaiberg and his students reach across the generations with profound insight, demonstrated prescience, and a new vision of social justice.--John Walton, Distinguished Research professor, University of CaliforniaMaintaining a critical, stimulating and thought-provoking spirit, Schnaiberg, Gould and Pellow move beyond the field of environmental sociology in the volume at hand. Aiming to interpret 21st century political economy, environment and social justice dilemmas, they explore in novel ways the transnationalization of the treadmill of production, thus extending Schnaiberg's original theory. Their multi-level and US-focused analysis enlighten the reader with their emphasis on global scale hegemonic as well as counter-hegemonic political processes. Neither pessimists nor optimists, they view with caution and analyze with care the potential impacts of new transnational forms of resistance. Their unique approach lays out a promising research agenda on the new politics of the environment for critical social scientists. --Maria Kousis, University of Crete

Strong The Treadmill of Production does a really good job at laying out how the owners of industry work in collusion with our various governmental representatives to promote the workings of a very hazardous industrial "treadmill" that leads to large social inequalities and environmental degradation. However, the authors do not seem concerned with any remotely achievable solutions to this odious problem. They state at one point that the resolution of the problem is to be left up to "activists and others". The authors state that the only way to create a sustainable and equitable environment is to make dramatic structural changes (think Marx's revolution) and that anything short of this will simply lead to the complete depletion of all our natural resources and insinuates the very end of mankind. I feel that this argument discounts the fact that many industries are beginning not only to understand that resources are limited, but that any industry that creates waste is a very inefficient (read costly) way to run a business. There are various examples of how "green" technologies are getting a hold of big business and making changes for the better. They also state that the only way to control for the problems of environmental and social inequality is to democratize industry, production etc. I fail to see how this is a legitimate solution when the reasons against having a "pure" democracy were laid out rather persuasively in Federalist 10.Finally, I gave four stars because Gould et al. do seem make the issues of environmental injustice a very scintillating topic for discussion, even if that discussion ends up gearing more towards reducing and reusing and less towards revolution.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Great academic read By Charotte This is an academic book more than a pleasure read. As dry as it is, it's essential for anyone interested in social movements, the injustice fostered by capitalism, or environmental sociology to understand the development of this theory (the treadmill of production) and its implications for modern social movements.

13 of 13 people found the following review helpful. There was a silent implosion, a flutter of velvet darkness By EA Solinas Illustrations can make or break a book's experience -- good ones will enhance the book's atmosphere, and bad ones will wreck your ability to envision what the author describes.Fortunately, Neil Gaiman has connected with some great illustrators over the years. And one of the illustrators who best works with Gaiman is Chris Riddell, who has illustrated the three books in this collection: the whimsical "Fortunately the Milk," eerie children's horror story "Coraline," and the elegant, gothic "The Graveyard Book" (which won the Newbury Award). All three books are enchanting on their own, and Riddell's illustrations perfectly fit Gaiman's eerie, eccentric writing style."Fortunately the Milk" skews the youngest of the three stories (despite some jokes clearly intended for the grown-ups), and is possibly the most exciting story about buying milk since... ever. It's also the one in which Riddell's illustrations shine the most, since the whimsical, oddball story lends itself well to the charmingly exaggerated black-and-white pictures. In the story, a family has run out of milk. The mother is away at a conference, and the kids are unable to eat their Toastios... and when the dad comes back, he doesn't have milk. Why? The answer is an increasingly convoluted tale of abduction by globby green aliens, the Queen of the Pirates, piranhas, the time-trabeling Professor Steg’s Floaty-Ball-Person-Carrier, the barbaric followers of Splod, ponies, vampires, the Galactic Police, and countless other obstacles that threaten to keep him from getting home with the milk."Coraline" follows a girl who has recently moved into a dull new apartment, with parents who ignore her and neighbors who are either insane or boring. It's the sort of relentlessly dull world that any little girl would want to escape from -- until Coraline does. She encounters a formerly bricked-up door that leads into an apartment in another world, which looks eerily like her own. In fact, it's so similar that she has a taloned, button-eyed "other mother" and matching "other father," as well as a chorus of singing, dancing rats and magical toys. But soon she discovers the horrors that lurk in this Other world, and what will happen if she can't defeat the Other Mother. In "The Graveyard Book," Nobody Owens' family was murdered by a mysterious assassin -- but he was spared because he wandered down into the graveyard. The mysterious Silas (the only one who can leave the graveyard) takes charge of the baby, and he is raised by the ghosts who dwell there. In the years that follow, Bod has many terrifying and wondrous adventures -- involving a witch's ghost, the Sleer, ghouls, dancing the Macabray, and his eccentric teacher Miss Lupesceau. But the man who murdered his family is still after Bod, as well as the only human friend he's ever had.The "Neil Gaiman/Chris Riddell 3-Book Box Set" shows off the full range of Gaiman's writing ability -- a wacky, whimsical story about the ultimate tall tale, a delicately poetic urban-gothic, and a cobwebby, skin-crawling horror story. He has the knack for incorporating the whimsical and fantastical (even if it's obviously a lie, like in "Fortunately the Milk") into the ordinary world, and making it totally believable that an ordinary apartment building could lead to a place of eldritch horrors. His wordcraft is absolutely exquisite, whether it's being silly ("How does a volcano know so much about transtemporal meta-science?”) or injecting poetry into horror ("A husk you'll be, a wisp you'll be, and a thing no more than a dream on waking, or a memory of something forgotten"). He also comes up with some truly charming characters, from the erudite volcano god to the sternly paternal vampire Silas, from the sensible Coraline to the earnest Bod. And of course, the time-tripping dad (who looks oddly like Gaiman himself). And Chris Riddell's illustrations are a delicate but definite enhancement to the stories. His black-and-white drawings are mostly lifelike, but slightly exaggerated (giant pirate hats, thuggy-looking faces) with lots of long lanky limbs, trailing cloth and pointed faces. And there are subtle differences in each book, depending on what the theme is -- "Fortunately, The Milk" is sillier-looking (it has a stegosaurus in a lab coat!), while "Graveyard Book" is delicate and haunting. The "Neil Gaiman/Chris Riddell 3-Book Set" is a good exploration of both men's considerable talents. Gaiman's exquisite writing and Riddell's delicate pictures complement each other perfectly, and any bibliophile child will adore these stories.

Yes, I own all of these books in their original release form, yes I'm taking up valuable space for two copies, but this art!! My theory is the nor ragged a book cover looks and the more broken its spine becomes the more it has been cherished. I have cherished these stories and now I have fresh copies to fall in love with all over again.

9 of 12 people found the following review helpful. It is a really nice box set of books but be aware By Dorianne L McCreary It is a really nice box set of books but be aware, these are not graphic novels. I was under the impression that these were a set of graphic novel versions of the book since it says they are illustrated by Chris Riddell. Coraline and the Graveyard book just have a few pictures scattered through out and Fortunately the milk has more pictures but none of them are graphic novels. That is the only reason I gave one less star.

Too vague for the beginner and nothing new for the experienced By nocalgal For a book that claims to be the "Ultimate Guide" for beginner foragers, it's really strange to me why there are no pictures, or even written descriptions of the various plants covered. I guess he assumes that the reader is going to have an identification book with them, as well. However, it seems to me that if someone is into foraging enough to be carrying around an ID book, they're probably already knowledgeable enough that they're not going to learn much from this book. There are a couple of interesting recipes, but a total of only 7 recipes in the book is disappointing. The information as to what to forage and what medicinal uses for some of them are is cursory, at best. I got the eBook version for $2.99 today, but I don't consider it worth that and will be returning it for a refund.

I was surprised to know about foraging plants that always comes in my way while going to college. After reading it, I am really prepared and know seasonal realities of what would be available and what to avoid.

I'd never really heard about urban foraging before but this book has been precious addition to my knowledge. He did a great job of incorporating fun recipes and remaining healthier with it. I love the way author writes and how transparent and humble he is.

The Ultimate Guide to Learn C Programming (c plus plus, C++ for beginners, programming computer, how to program)

The evolution that we have seen in technology in the last 10 years, has seen nearly everything that we interact with on a daily basis be controlled by a computer. As we know, all computers operate using a programming language most commonly referred to as C++. To many, C++ looks like a type of language that they will never be able to understand. However, learning C++ is much easier than you would think. Every process, large or small, are a series of smaller steps which achieve the end result. Although the process as a whole may look like something that you will never understand, all that you need to know is that all complex things are made up of small parts which are easily understood. Once we understand those small parts, we understand the large process which is no longer complex and difficult to understand. When you break down the computer programming language into smaller steps, you will quickly be able to come to terms with what everything means in no time at all. Through this book, you will learn the basics that every beginner wanting to learn about C++ should know. •

Here is a preview of what you'll learn:

  • How to make our very first C++ program in less than 10 minutes.
  • What software can we use to write C++ code.
  • How to expand our program using variables.
  • Different types of operators.
  • How to make programs that loop.
  • Solving simple problems using conditions and pointers.

Learning programming isn't as easy as learning how to speak By John Roberston Learning programming isn't as easy as learning how to speak, it's like learning how to walk - you'll keep the balance for a while then fall down sometimes then get back on your feet again after some time. I must admit, even though I have in the programming field for quite some time now, I still don't fully get C++. I mean, I know the basic codes but not deeper. This book will help you understand the language that is C++. It shows you how to make your very first C++ program, teaches you what software you can use, reveals to you how to expand your programs by using variables and different types of operators, demonstrates to you how to loop, and many more. If this still won't be enough for you to learn C++ then at least it gave you an idea.As a person in the field of IT, we really don't stop learning and this book really is a good read.
