Excerpt from Adventures Among BooksOf the essays in this volume "Adventures among Books," and "Rab's Friend," appeared in Scribner s Magazine; and "Recollections of Robert Louis Stevenson" (to the best of the author's memory) in The North American Review. The essay on "Smollett" was in the Anglo-Saxon, which has ceased to appear; and the shorter papers, such as "The Confessions of Saint Augustine," in a periodical styled Wit and Wisdom. For "The Poems of William Morris" the author has to thank the Editor of Longman's Magazine; for "The Boy," and "Mrs. Radcliffe's Novels," the Proprietors of The Cornhill Magazine; for "Enchanted Cigarettes," and possibly for "The Supernatural in Fiction," the Proprietors of The Idler. The portrait, after Sir William Richmond, R. A., was done about the time when most of the Essays were written - and that was not yesterday.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Adventures Among Books (Classic Reprint), by Andrew Lang

About the Author Andrew Lang (March, 31, 1844 July 20, 1912) was a Scottish writer and literary critic who is best known as a collector of folk and fairy tales. Lang s academic interests extended beyond the literary and he was a noted contributor to the fields of anthropology, folklore, psychical research, history, and classic scholarship, as well as the inspiration for the University of St. Andrew s Andrew Lang Lectures. A prolific author, Lang published more than 100 works during his career, including twelve fairy books, in which he compiled folk and fairy tales from around the world. Lang s Lilac Fairy and Red Fairy books are credited with influencing J. R. R. Tolkien, who commented on the importance of fairy stories in the modern world in his 1939 Andrew Lang Lecture On Fairy-Stories.

A book for people who care about reading By Reliquiae In this Kindle version there are a few spacing issues between paragraphs, but otherwise there are few other mistakes in format. The annoying issue is that the Table of Contents is not active. However the Footnotes are. At the end of this review I've included the missing Location numbers for the chapter divisions for anyone who is interested. The book is a well-known collection of papers written in the late 19th and early 20th centuries about literature. Andrew Lang is best remembered as a poet, novelist, critic, and a contributor to anthropology. But he is probably most admired for his collections of fairy tales. Lang believed that booklovers should read what they enjoy and care about, and reading his Adventures Among Books opens up new directions for readers to follow.Even after more than a century has passed, lovers of good literature will still find much to glean from these essays. The first chapter, from which the title of the book is taken, is one of the most valuable. It's the most autobiographical, offering insight into Lang's life and literary tastes. He recalls for us his most vivid memories of the stories he read or heard. Lang especially treasured tales from his childhood, which he said "clung to my memory." He accounts for his profound love for books as a "gift given to me by the fairies." Indeed he was a fan of fairytales, believing that "a boy of five is more at home in Fairyland than in his own country." This perhaps accounts for his publication of 12 books of fairytales. Lang moves on from his childhood to describe his personal encounters with the classics and his bond with the world's great authors that he so admired. Most other chapters are interesting and valuable as well, although some are dated and others too esoteric to hold my concentration. His essay about his friend, Robert Louis Stevenson, was insightful, although there is better literary analysis to be found elsewhere. The same may be said about chapters concerning "Oliver Wendell Holmes" or "Mr. Morris's Poems" or "Mrs. Radcliffe's Novels." A few discussions, although probably compelling in their day, have less value now, unless one is a Lang scholar or still reads some of the works he cites. On the other hand, I am probably just revealing my own shallow interests and literary ignorance.I particularly enjoyed his chapter devoted to St. Augustine's Confessions. It is a fine essay to introduce and illuminate this classic work - at least until the closing paragraphs. When Augustine finally submits to Christ, Lang admits that that was the point for him that "the Saint becomes less interesting." While he regards Augustine's Confessions as "the most human of books," he is far less interested in it when it "strays into theology" following the saint's conversion. Earlier, Lang admitted to not having absorbed much of his Scottish Presbyterian upbringing. "I got no harm from "The Shorter Catechism," he writes in the first essay, "of which I remember little, and neither then nor now was or am able to understand a single sentence." Maybe if he really had learned his catechism he would have appreciated Augustine's theology more.Lang pays tribute to many other great writers throughout the book, among them the American author, Nathaniel Hawthorne. He was America's "classic author," says Lang. "His renown is unimpeached: his greatness is probably permanent, because he is at once such an original and personal genius, and such a judicious and determined artist."A final example of Lang's essays is his "Stories and Story-telling." Where do good stories come from? In the end, Lang is not entirely sure. "Fiction is a beautiful disease of the brain... Something, an incident or an experience, or a reflection, gets imbedded, incrusted, in the properly constituted mind, and becomes the nucleus of a pearl of romance." The essay is fascinating for its exploration of how one possessed of the "disease" might begin to write good stories. "What is the mysterious art by which these things are done? What makes the well-told story seem real, rich with life, actual, engrossing? It is the secret of genius, of the novelist's art, and the writer who cannot practise the art might as well try to discover the Philosopher's Stone, or to 'harp fish out of the water.'" Too bad for the rest of us.Each of the essays in this volume is instructive and most are worth the time it takes to read and unpack them. Andrew Lang's Adventures Among Books could easily form a guide or syllabus for a literature course, except for the author's own warning: "Distrust a course of reading! People who really care for books read all of them. There is no other course." Good advice for booklovers of any age.TOCPreface: Loc. 7Chapter I: Adventures Among Books, Loc. 7Chapter II: Recollections of Robert Louis Stevenson, Loc. 405Chapter III: Rab's Friend, Loc. 574Chapter IV: Oliver Wendell Holmes, Loc. 797Chapter V: Mr. Morris's Poems, Loc. 968Chapter VI: Mrs. Radcliffe's Novels, Loc. 1198Chapter VII: A Scottish Romanticist of 1830, Loc. 1391Chapter VIII: The Confessions of Saint Augustine, Loc. 1558Chapter IX: Smollett, Loc. 1710Chapter X: Nathaniel Hawthorne, Loc. 2104Chapter XI: The Paradise of Poets, Loc. 2217Chapter XII: Paris and Helen, Loc. 2303Chapter XIII: Enchanted Cigarettes, Loc. 2433Chapter VIV: Stories and Story-Telling, Loc. 2508Chapter XV: The Supernatural in Fiction, Loc. 2617Chapter XVI: An Old Scottish Psychical Researcher, Loc. 2694Chapter XVII: The Boy, Loc. 2809Footnotes: Loc. 2980

Summer as a character is pretty predicatable in the beginning, its obvious she is going to do something stupid to cause the following chain of events all the way in the 2nd chapter, so there is no surprises there. Ms Pace is doing a great job fleshing out the characters, and the imagery of the underworld and top world is nicely detailed The "fight" between witches and demons is a new subject for me, I can't wait to see how it ends. Definitely give this book a try.

I lied. I do care about you. I'm not over you and I don't know if I ever will be.My name is Abigail, but most people call me Abby. When Jonathon broke up with me a year ago just after Christmas I thought I'd be fine. Now the holidays are here again, and I'm falling apart at the seams. I can't get him off my mind no matter how hard I try.Reconciliation isn't an option. He has a new girlfriend, a more serious one like he wanted. They're perfect for each other. He's the son of a billionaire, a district attorney, and she's a publicist. As a secretary in a lawyer's office, I can't compete with that. I know I need to move on with my life, but I don't know how. When I invited his parents over for tea on Christmas Day, l didn't know I was igniting a course of events that would change our lives forever. Once the wheels were in motion everything spiraled so quickly. I didn't even see it coming. Will Abigail find it in her heart to move on with a new love? Or will she win Jonathon's heart back in time for Christmas? Note: All of the books in this series are stand alone. No cliffhangers, no cheating, and a guaranteed HEA. He has moved on with a new girlfriend but Abigail has not started to date again. With Christmas coming in a few days, she invites his parents over for tea on Christmas eve. This does not go over well with the new girlfriend. Jonathan calls her to ask her to not to continue to see his parents. They agree to meet for coffee. This sets in motion a series of events that neither of them saw coming. I received this ARC copy with the promise of a honest review. This is the best short story I've read in a long time. Was it a mistake to see Abigail again? What will it do to his current relationship? A must read.

This was a very sweet Christmas romance book by Micha Carver. I loved reading about Jonathan and Abby, who had broken up after Christmas the year before after a three year relationship. Abby was a happy go lucky kind of girl and Jonathan decided he needed a more serious girl to be with. So he broke up with Abby and started seeing Melissa, who was very serious. But come Christmas time, Jonathan and Abby started remembering past Christmases they had spent together happily. Stand alone story with an HEA ending. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Neferet has finally made herself known to mortals. Crowning herself a Dark Goddess, she is evil unleashed and is enslaving the citizens of Tulsa. The vampyres of the House of Night have banded with the police, and are gathering every last resource they have, but they know that no single vampyre is strong enough to vanquish her―unless that vampyre has the power to summon the elements as well as the ability to wield Old Magick. It didn't hold up to the rest honestly.. I wish now after finishing the series that I had not read this last book and just kept what I thought would happen to myself. I expected too much from the last in this series.I too was a Heath fan... Stark loves Z, I get that but really come on now. Heath was made a promise from Nyx and it wasn't fullfilled. Heath should have been redeemed and he should have gotten his girl.. Rephaim should have had been able to be human 24hrs a day as well. Atone one, atone them all.Neferet is bat sh*t crazy as always but come on the Nerd-Herd from previous books wouldn't have been lax in wanting to save those inside the Hotel. The addition of Lynette was definately not needed. The only part of the book I agree with is Kalona. He deserved what he got.I really wanted to like this book but I can't. What happens to them after the end... They all just leave???? Whatever.

And as much as I hate to admit it, I was drawn in and really got into the series. Things were really good up until Book 6 or 7. Once Zoey's Soul shattered things went downhill.Book 11 was a complete disappointment, and while this book "Redeemed" was better it still left a lot to be wanted. There was never any clarity on what will happen with the Red Fledglings, Erin is unnecessarily killed Heath comes back in Aroux, only to die at the end of this book, There is no clarity on what happens to Aphrodite, does she become a Vampire, is she human, why are her visions becoming more painful? Starks internal battle is never discussed again, nor is it ever revealed that Kalona was sneaking into Starks body to take advantage of Zoey. All of these things are left unsaid. The most frustrating part is that there seems to be no growth from the characters. They all seem just as unsure and immature as they did in book one, which makes some sense since barely a year has gone by in the series. But is still a hard pill to swallow.Never the less, the final battle was interesting enough, and the Kalona twist was enjoyable. I'll always appreciate the first couple of books and I wish the Cast luck in their next project.

18 of 21 people found the following review helpful. Rushed, So Much Left Open By The Book Faerie Minimal SpoilersThis series has been going downhill for awhile. My first issue (which has always been an issue from Book 1) is language/content vs. YA audience. It's written to the Twilight crowd, but the language, sexual content, drug use, etc is too much for even early high school in my opinion. My second issue got worse as the series went on: TOO MANY PROBLEMS. There are so many characters that each had a hoard of problems that none ever got resolved in a satisfactory way. A character with three problems would solve one and gain two more. Then a problem would seemingly disappear because we never hear about it again.Issue three was that the ending was rushed. All this buildup to a final battle that barely took 5 minutes. I had read somewhere that they were originally planning 15 books. I don't know if they realized they were going down in flames and we're trying to stop the bleeding, or what. It's always been pointed out that Kristen Cast was tasked with making the teenagers sound like teenagers, which apparently in their estimation means vapid and shallow. The only one who really pulled it off well was Aphrodite. She managed to sound teenaged, but witty and intelligent even if she owned her shallowness (which was obviously covering her pain - she was pretty much the least shallow character). The ending of who ends up with who was disappointing as well. It was too neat and clean with someone for everyone.Overall, this was a really good idea for a series that went terribly wrong in the execution phase.

However, the book seems banged out and not illustrated so many of the good ideas are really just words about doing something with no real idea of what you get -- things like meat smokers, chained rain barrels would be nice to be able to actually make.

By Amazon Customer This book gives some interesting ideas for living in something other than conventional "stick-built" homes, but a few of them I don't see how they would be considered a "survival" type in times of weather emergencies (i.e. a Tiny Home on wheels would not be very safe in a tornado situation).

Best PDF Ebook Classic French Course in English (Classic Reprint), by William Cleaver Wilkinson

Excerpt from Classic French Course in EnglishThe preparation of the present volume proposed to the author a task more difficult far than that undertaken in either of the two volumes chronologically preceding it in the group, The After-School Series, to which it belongs. Those volumes dealt with literatures limited and finished; this volume deals with a literature indefinitely vast in extent, and still in vital process of growth. The selection of material to be used was, in the case of the earlier volumes, virtually made for the author beforehand, in a manner greatly to ease his sense of responsibility for the exercise of individual judgment and taste. Long prescription, joined to the winnowing effect of wear and waste through time and chance, had left little doubt what works of what writers, Greek and Roman, best deserved now to be shown to the general reader. Besides this, the prevalent custom of the schools of classical learning could then wisely be taken as a clew of guidance to be implicitly followed, whatever might be the path through which it should lead. There is here no similar avoidance of responsibility possible; for the schools have not established a custom, and French literature is a living body, from which no important members have ever yet been rent by the ravages of time. The plan of this volume, together with the compass proposed for it, created the necessity of establishing from the outset certain limits to be very strictly observed. There could be no introductory general matter, beyond a rapid and summary review of that literature, as a whole, which is the subject of the book. The list of authors selected for representation must not include the names of any still living.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This is a quite pedantic book on 'comparative literature on French language', although quite captivating even for me, not knowing the language. I learnt that although French is a very rich language - the poetry part of the language is comparatively weak. There are discussions on a variety of 'Classic French Authors', the operative word being 'Classic' which means authors from a much older period. The authors are listed in the beginning after a short introduction of the book. The introduction itself is very informative, and I gained a good knowledge of the origin of the language. Among the authors listed, it turned out, that I am familiar with some of them. So I read on with interest. The writing is very scholarly yet understandable and for a student in comparative literature the writing is very helpful and informative. Overall I had a positive experience with the book. Next time I will make sure that the book I am getting is about learning French!!Book-loverAmazon verified purchase

My mistake. It's got some decent selections, but wasn't what I was looking for. I may change this review after I finish reading the collection, but thought I'd post my experience as there isn't much on the page to indicate otherwise for the casual browser.

I would prefer to have the original texts as well. So if one wants to have some talking pints about French classics this book helps. For learning the real material one should look somewhere else.

From the Author Zombies: Death Squad is the third story in my alternative science fiction horror series. I loved writing a zombie story from the zombies point of view. It flipped the whole concept on its head and opened the doors to some really weird and wonderful stories.

What made me fall in love with this book despite its obvious faults is that it is full of surprises. I love the fact that everything I expected to happen did not and that the book kept me guessing until the end. I loved the new twist on zombies...absolutely brilliant....already moving on to book two.

0 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Don't bother By Shelly I'm not comparing the storyline to twilight, but the writing itself was childish and clunky similar to the way Stephanie Meyer writes. The conversations were written like the author spends all his time on Xbox and 4chan's /b/ board. Some of the dialogue seemed like cheap ripoffs of versions from TV shows and web series's like Red Vs Blue.No part of this story held my attention aside from the sheer ridiculousness of the forced intensity. The cover picture is also a Banshee from the Mass Effect series. Another example of the author stealing content. Very disappointing. I would only recommend this if you can read it for free with kindle unlimited and you're a fan of poorly written works.

-A fresh NEW standalone series- From the Bestselling Author who brought you The Kingpin Love Affair Series, and The Bittersweet Series now brings you a new fresh college romance, with a clash of the two book series. -Can be read as a standalone, without having read the other two series.- “I’m going to tear the fuck out of that pussy tonight, do you understand me?” I growled. I wanted her. I craved her. She was mine. Find out why Chase Winchester no longer wants to be the bad boy... "This book was laugh out loud funny..." "One of J.L. Beck's best books to date..." "Hilarious, and sexy mixed in one... a must read..." *** Gia King was more than tired of living under her father’s thumb. The Mafia King turned FBI agent was overly protective of her every move and college was her one and only savior. Going to Auburn University was her dream, and she couldn’t wait to be free. She was going to let her hair down and shuck the good girl appearance for a new side—a darker, sexier, and ten times worse, Gia. She was ready to push the boundaries. Chase Winchester was a God. No, seriously. Women all across campus sighed heavily when their eyes stumbled across him. He was arrogant, sexy, and he knew it. AU was just another reason for him to spread his feathers and dip his fingers into some prime sorority girls. Until Gia King came into his life, knocking him right on his ass. She was everything a man would want and yet, somehow, she was off limits. There was no way he could force himself to take her, unless she truthfully wanted him. College, romance, and two families who were hell bent on being enemies. Can love between these two really transpire or will everyone else have the last say. Sometimes you have to chase what you want.

By Amazeballs Book Addicts When I was growing up I was the bratty kid that got upset when my brother and sister could go to the store and buy stickers with their names on it. My name wasn't mainstream so they didn't sell stickers with my name on it. As an adult I am still little jealous of other people's names so whenever I find a book with the name Gia in it I have to buy it. Sometimes I don't even read the book, I just have to own it. Having read all of J.L Beck's other books, I know I had to read this one. I absolutely loved this one. I was hooked from beginning to end. I'm not sure how long it was but I didn't want to put it down until I was done.I so was glad to see that Gia is this story is a very likable character. She's great. She is focused on graduating at the top of her class. She's being tutored by Chance. Chance has a twin Chase. Chase is super sexy and a bit of a manwhore. There is attraction between Chase and Gia. They have this great love hate relationship. I loved their bickering back and forth. We get both Gia and Chase's POVs, which is awesome because we get to read what both of them are thinking. There are some funny parts, like when Chase meets Gia's Dad.This is a great read and I can't wait to read more in this series.A copy was received for a review.

It was worth the Chase ~ By louise hunter(Books All things paranormal and romance) Eeeeeeeeeeek!Fantastic book what a brilliant way to bring two series together and make a new series that I think is definitely worth the chase.I'm a huge fan of the kingpin series and loved every character this author created, even though I had not read the entire Bittersweet series I read the first two,so when the book started unfolding there was material from bittersweet I remembered and I laughed so hard and then there was material from the kingpin series that made my heart flutter and remember the relationships that where built in this series I fell so much in love with.So here we are with this brilliant crossover where the adults from the original series are grown and have there own kids and those kids are now in early adulthood attending collage and this story centers around alzerro's daughter from KP series and Corey's son from BS series.I love the passion that was written in this book and the emotions that come with it,I love this authors sense of humor you will always find a good laugh in all her books and without fail writes amazing characters that you get and love and boy did I fall in love with Gia and Chase and the story they have to tell!Assassins reading reviewing groupBooks all things paranormal and romance(I was given this as an Arc for a honest review)

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Loved it J.L Beck did it again!!! By Amanda Pacheco I loved how J.L. Beck still carried on the passion in this book that her Kingpin series had. Worth the Chase was an amazing read. What I loved most about this book is how Gia and Chase have so much in common. They both have parents who are so in love and who have been through so much to find there happiness. I also loved how the writer kept in all our favorite characters from the Kingpin series. Of course Gia father being Alzerro King who used to be a kingpin now turned FBI agent is still the number one badass, and He of course lets Chase know all that info about him and even threats him from the beginning that if he hurts his daughter that he is going to kill him and bury him i is backyard. Bree her mother is still the same sweet loving person who still holds the family together and understands everything her daughter is struggling with. When it comes to understanding her feeling for Chase. If you love the Kingpin series then you are differently going to love this book. If you have not read it buy it now!! I received this book in an ARC in exchange for an honest review. And once again J.L. Beck did it again she got me hooked on another series of hers. I cannot wait for the next book to this series. Thank you so much for another wonderful read J.L. Beck.

By jlswainsboro/Judy Lewis Title: Drawn To HerSeries: Drawn To HerDesignation: Book One, NOT A Standalone, Includes CliffhangerAuthor: Nora StoneHeat Level: SweetReading Platform: Kindle UnlimitedMy Rating: Five Super Sweet Stars*****Nora Stone has completely captured my heart yet again with her latest release, Drawn to Her and it's one heck of a super sweet page-turner. I fell in love with Stone's work last year when I began reading her Craving Her Curves Series and I've been a devoted fan ever since. Drawn to Her is a spin-off of Stone's Craving Her Curves:The Obsession Series, and is where we're originally introduced to Caden Parker, the protagonist of our story. Although this character was introduced in an earlier series, the author has skillfully included a great deal of the backstory so that a reader can easily follow the story without having read any of the earlier books. However, for any reader that truly enjoys a sweet, new adult/coming of age romance, I highly recommend reading Stone's entire Craving Her Curves Series. Nora Stone is an exceptionally gifted writer whose stories are always contemporary, realistic, moving, heartwarming, sweet, well crafted and well written - without the use of explicit sex or over the top profanity. There may be an occasional obscenity but very few and never overdone. The narrative is written in the first person with alternating his and her points of view which is almost always my preference to read. The dialogue is intelligent, well executed and flows beautifully. But my very favorite element of Stone's stories is always the characters. There's nothing I love more than an engaging, complex, well developed cast of characters and Stone never lets me down. But Stone goes even a step further as these characters are also captivating, endearing and at times, laugh out loud funny. This story will most certainly tug on your heartstrings but it's the characters that will steal your heart - every single time. And with the inclusion of Joey and Charlotte's toddler, Little Al, for comic relief, it's a guaranteed slam duck to tickle your funny bone. There's absolutely nothing that can bring a smile quicker than an adorable child as one of the secondary characters. He's so precious; I could just eat him up! Stone expertly combines these elements to craft a deliciously sweet and delightfully entertaining romance.Twenty two year old Caden Parker was an aspiring MMA fighter and boxer. I say was because he now is a twenty-two year old recovering alcoholic and drug addict who is desperately trying to put his life back on track. At the tender age of fifteen, Caden lost both his parents in an automobile accident. Although Caden was not in the car at the time of the crash, it certainly left emotional scars on Caden who was left alone and struggling with the guilt of not dying with his parents. He wallowed in grief, pity and self loathing causing him to reject what little family he had left and turn to alcohol and drugs for comfort. After six years of this self imposed punishment, Caden decided to admit himself to rehab for treatment. Finally clean and sober, he makes the decision to leave New York and seek out his famous cousin Joey Parker, star quarterback of the Dallas Bullets. It's not an easy transition for Caden but Joey welcomes him into his and Charlotte's home and their family with open arms. Unfortunately, Caden and Charlotte do not initially hit it off and don't become friends until after Caden saves Charlotte's life. Caden is almost killed when he takes a bullet meant for Charlotte, but he does survive and it's not only a new beginning for him but also the beginning of a new friendship with Charlotte. With the help and support of Joey, Charlotte, baby Bethany and of course, the sparkling Little Al, Caden overcomes his demons, becomes active in AA and begins his journey to a new life. Up until this point, there has been no one in Caden's life other than Joey, his family and their friends but that's all about to change. While dining out with Joey and Charlotte, Caden sees Bella Ling for the first time and is completely besotted with the beautiful young woman who is providing the entertainment at the restaurant as a belly dancer. Yep, she's a belly dancer and Caden wants to meet her so Charlotte sends Caden over to introduce himself and inquire into the possibility of hiring her for lessons - for Charlotte, of course. Oh my! Bella immediately recognizes Joey and Charlotte and that night is the beginning of a beautiful love story between our two young protagonists.Bella Ling is an Asian American college student and also an accomplished belly dancer. She, too, lost her biological parents when she was young but fortunately was adopted by a loving couple. Although Bella's adoptive parents have always doted on her, they've also been strict and demanding, and as a result, Bella has led a somewhat sheltered life. She's never really been interested in having boyfriends or relationships - until now. She is more than a little attracted and intrigued by the handsome Caden Parker and is quite literally swept off her feet by the intensity of the feelings they both immediately feel for each other. Caden and Bella quickly become involved in a relationship but as in life, nothing is ever simple. Although they immediately fall in love and lust with each other, their journey is fraught with jealous roommates, well-intentioned parents, lies of omission, ghosts from the past and heartbreaking events of the present. No spoilers from me but I will say this....Handsome aspiring boxer and recovering alcoholic-check! Beautiful, intelligent college student and belly dancer-check! Interfering roommate and controlling father-check! Sweet romance, heartbreaking angst, and an unexpected consequence that will rock their world and possibly destroy their relationship-you bet! That and a whole more! An emotionally gripping, fast-paced, feel-good read that is guaranteed to warm your heart. This is NOT a standalone story and does end with a cliffhanger. I can hardly wait for Book Two.Complimentary copy received in exchange for review.

Caden and Bella(dancer) By Bigishy0 ***I received an ARC copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.***Caden, a former MMA fighter who at a young age lost both parents. He wasn't into being helped by his relatives. He became an alcoholic and delved in drugs. Going into the ring under the influence caused him to lose fights and it occurred to him he needed help. He went into rehab and stuck it out. Upon leaving rehab he wanted a fresh start and went to his cousin, Joey Parker, a famous football player. Caden and Joey's wife didn't hit it off until he saved her life by taking a bullet meant for her. Now they are thick as thieves. While at dinner one evening, Joey, Char, the kids, and Caden, they see a belly dancer performing at the restaurant. Caden couldn't keep his eyes off her. Char told him to give her the baby and go ask the dancer if she gave lessons, if so she'd like to lose the baby weight. Caden does as asked and eventually with them being together for the lessons, they end up going on a date. The dancer, Bella, is also drawn to Caden they have sex on the first date. She's so engrossed with Caden she forgets to call her roommate and let her know where she is and that she's all right. The roommate is truly offended by this and calls Bella's dad who runs a background check on Caden. He tells Bella everything in front of them that he's found. Bella is hurt that Caden didn't trust her to tell her EVERYTHING about himself. So she wouldn't see or speak to him for days. Bella is caught in a dangerous situation and Caden comes to the rescue. He apologizes for his errors in lying by omission and they begin to reconcile while she is being checked out at the hospital. Before her release the nurse gives them her prognosis. Great read.

Caden is a recovering alcoholic and drug addict, who is living with his famous cousin and his family. He has reformed his life and is trying to leave his past behind him. He is instantly drawn to Bella the minute he sees her dancing at the restaurant he goes into with his family. Charlotte, his cousins wife sees that he likes her and helps him come up with a plan to meet her. They seem to have an instant connection. Bella is a student who loves dancing and does it as an outlet, which helps her understand when Caden tells her he wants to get back into MMA, which he left when he kept losing due to being drunk. It is his outlet just as dancing is hers. They are together as much as possible, which worries Bella's friend Kat. Kat worries so much that she calls Bella's controlling father and he lets Bella know he disapproves of her relationship. Her father ends up telling Bella about Caden's past, which Caden hadn't done himself yet in fear that she would reject him. Bella is confused and hurt so she distances herself, but when she ends up stuck in a dorm room fire, he saves her. They get an unexpected surprise at the hospital where Bella is being checked out, that brings them back together and looking forward to the furture..***I received an ARC copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.***

Excerpt from Views and ReviewsThose whose palates are accustomed to the subtle flavours of the wines of the Rhine and Moselle can smack their lips and name the vintage at the first taste. Likewise any one fairly familiar with the work of Mr. James during his forty years of literary activity can, after the reading of a single page taken at random, judge with a remarkable accuracy the date of its composition. Yet the transition has not been abrupt and the styles of writing which the author has adopted, early, middle and late, have blended in such a way that he has been bringing many of his earlier readers, though some have fallen by the wayside, along with him to a genuine appreciation of his present work.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Views and Reviews (Classic Reprint), by Henry James

About the Author Henry James was an American author, essayist, and critic known for his contributions to both literary criticism and the realist movement, which focused on presenting everyday life as it actually was. In creating realistic portrayals of life and society, James often included elements of social and political commentary in his works, notably his depiction of the feminist movement in The Bostonians, and the exploration of culture clash between America and Europe in Daisy Miller. James s best known works also include The Portrait of a Lady, The Ambassadors, and the novella The Turn of the Screw. American by birth, James spent much of his time in England and eventually moved to London. He became a British subject just before his death in 1916.

Very quotable, very intelligent and ultimately too rich By Phred I think it was Christopher, the first to post an Amazon review of this the Kindle Edition of Views and who brought it to my attention. I got it on the theory that much of Henry James can be too densely written for my taste, but that I wanted something by him I could finish. This taste has whetted my appetite, and has confirmed my cautions. This short selection of reviews by James provided me with more quotable material in fewer pages than any writer this side of Shakespeare. By the end I was fighting my way through needlessly convoluted sentence structure and a notion that Henry James really like to hear himself. In an early selection he describes a writer as: "not offensively clever" a wonderfully clever turn of phrase. He has little good to say of Walt Whitman saying of him: " He tell us in the lines quoted that the words of his book are nothing. To our perception they are everything and very little at that." Nicely written burn. What exactly are we to make of:" ...the critics taking notes as we may in the interests of truth, George Elliot belongs in that class of pre-eminent writers in relation to whom the imagination comes to self-consciousness only to find itself in subjugation." Say Whaa? For at least 2/3 of this brief selection I was in a state of astonishment that Henry James could use such a vast vocabulary with such precision. And then... and then. James will often scold a writer for phrases that "Smell too much of the candle?" a lovely way to describe an obviously forced but intended to be casually remark. Yet James's reputation is that he would labor over his texts only slightly more than he expected of his reader.I will be reconsidering writers such as Kipling, given the adulation he receives in this collection. I am all the more leery that Henry James can write with too much smell of the candle. Further he can be complex for no obvious reason except to fill more space on the way to making a point.

Each review is preceded by its original publication date.George Eliot's poetry? Tennyson's dramas? An outright pan of Walt Whitman, and OUR MUTUAL FRIEND? Are the reviews Henry James wrote in the 1870s and 1880s worth reading today?Consider this, on the essays of Swinburne:Mr. Swinburne is a dozen times too verbose; at least one-half of his phrases are what the French call phrases in the air. One-half of his sentence is always a repetition, for mere fancy's sake and nothing more, of the meaning of the other half—a play upon its words, an echo, a reflection, a duplication. This trick, of course, makes a writer formidably prolix. What we have called the absence of the moral sense of the writer of these essays is, however, their most disagreeable feature. By this we do not mean that Mr. Swinburne is not didactic, nor edifying, nor devoted to pleading the cause of virtue. We mean simply that his moral plummet does not sink at all, and that when he pretends to drop it he is simply dabbling in the relatively very shallow pool of the picturesque.Henry James liked metaphors and similes. Some of those he comes up with are very striking:Our Mutual Friend is, to our perception, the poorest of Mr. Dickens's works. And it is poor with the poverty not of momentary embarrassment, but of permanent exhaustion. It is wanting in inspiration. For the last ten years it has seemed to us that Mr. Dickens has been unmistakeably forcing himself. Bleak House was forced; Little Dorrit was laboured; the present work is dug out as with a spade and pickaxe. As I look over my highlights, I find this general statement on the value of criticism, which holds as true today as it did in the 1870s:"... The tendencies of our civilisation are certainly not such as foster a preponderance of morbid speculation. Our national genius inclines yearly more and more to resolve itself into a vast machine for sifting, in all things, the wheat from the chaff. American society is so shrewd, that we may safely allow it to make application of the truths of the study. Only let us keep it supplied with the truths of the study, and not with the half-truths of the forum. Let criticism take the stream of truth at its source, and then practice can take it half-way down. When criticism takes it half-way down, practice will come poorly off."

Unlike the usual "cram and memorise" approach, this book gives you the analogies and intuitions you need to actually *understand* calculus, so that later the formulas and details can actually make sense. 10/10

Indispensable By Tim McGrath After learning Euler's Formula from Kalid's indispensable site, BetterExplained.com, I became intrigued by Euler and decided to look into his solution to the Basel Problem. With what I knew at the time, I could understand everything except the expansion of sin(x), which Euler introduces as a lemma. It turns out that this infinite series, originally discovered by Newton, is one of the results of calculus, which I knew nothing about. So I made learning calculus my next project.I can't say that it was easy, but Kalid made it possible. Kalid is like everyone's personal tutor, answering questions on his site and providing encouragement when needed. His book is a great introduction, but if you're anything like me, you'll also have to refer to other sources. As a primer, the book doesn't get around to explaining the sine series, which is what I set out to understand. His site, however, does a brilliant job of bringing it alive. It's the most dynamic interpretation I have yet to come across, and it shows how calculus developed in ways that not even Newton could foresee.
