Review
“Woody offers a fresh perspective, freely sharing his knowledge of ecology, bird behavior and the critical component of conservation.”
(Peg Abbott, Executive Director, Naturalist Journeys Testimonial)“Woody always does such a great job of introducing people to birding and inspiring them to make it a part of their lives.”
(Jeff Parsons, Founding Director, Barn Beach Reserve, Leavenworth, WA Testimonial)“Woody is one of the best I know when it comes to engaging people of all ages and backgrounds in the wonders of the natural world. His insights into nature, from highly urbanized areas to wilderness, are a joy to discover, maybe because his own joy in the natural world comes across through his writings and teachings.”
(Gail Gatton, Executive Director, Audubon, WA Testimonial)“Some of the very finest days spent outdoors have been those with Woody Wheeler. He is not only a master of birds, but also of habitats and ecosystems, conservation and public issues, politics and solutions. You will learn from a master teacher values of sustainability, the philosophy of legacy, and stewardship across generations.”
(David Armstrong, Professor, Aquatic and Fishery Sciences, University of Washington Testimonial)"Of the many writers who have trained their focus on birds and their encompassing world, few have covered so much territory in so little space as Woody Wheeler. In these compact and companionable essays, “Look Up!” finds the essential fascination in subjects ranging from sapsuckers and nutcrackers to waxwings and zombies, Loraxes and Roosevelts to pikas and bikes. Besides spotting the birds, often by bike, Woody also takes on the bugaboos of our disconnected age, whether hand-helds, leaf-blowers, or science-deniers―and suggests how we may easily connect anew, just by “Looking Up!” This is a book that celebrates the full range of what we are given, from the lowly dump and tiny wren, to the resplendent quetzal and scarlet macaw. I very much doubt you will take it to bed and not face the next morning with an entirely new appreciation for birds, and for the quirky world we are lucky enough to occupy together." (Robert Michael Pyle, Author of "Wintergreen," "Mariposa Road," and "The Tangled Bank" Testimonial)About the Author

Attenborough, Thoreau, Keillor, and Wheeler By Amazon Customer This isn't a birding guide, it's the book you should read before you buy a birding guide. In fact, you really don't have to be a birder to enjoy it. It's a wonderful collection of thoughtful little nuggets on natural history, our relationship with nature, and most importantly, the importance of tearing our eyes from our phones and computers and looking up in wonder at the nature right in front of our noses, in our own neighborhoods. While birds take center stage in this book, the essays range farther afield, to wolves, pikas, Patagonia, and even the virtues of rakes over leaf blowers. If you imagine a dollop of David Attenborough's natural history, mixed with a modern-day backyard-philosopher Thoreau, leavened by the folksy storytelling of Garrison Keillor, you have some idea of what Woody Wheeler's writing is like. One of my favorite things about this book is its optimism. It's full of good news about our relationship with nature: neighbors working together to save a favorite local natural spot, or visionary philanthropists saving entire ecosystems. All you have to do is look up to see it.

"Then sit quietly for twenty minutes" By Kiki Woody Wheeler, a bird and natural history guide, writes that patience and observation are called for in birding, and an investment of around $100, principally for a good pair of binoculars. He couldn't be more encouraging to those getting started. "Dress for the weather and bring four things: a cup of coffee, binoculars, a note pad, and a pencil. You might want to add a bird identification book to this list. Then sit quietly for twenty minutes." He started out with opera glasses and a Golden Books field guide. "Look Up! Birds and Other Natural Wonders Just Outside Your Window" demonstrates that a passion for birds leads naturally to an interest in parks, in conservation, and in other wild creatures.Wheeler is the great-grandson of Jens Jensen, landscape architect of the prairie style, and sections of "Look Up!" are devoted to trees and landscapes and mini-parks. To encourage the bird population, the author replaced the grass in his backyard with more than a hundred native plants. Whether you are a passionate birder or fairly new to it, Woody Wheeler will inspire you with transformative ideas that come from looking closely at the natural world.

Powell, Jr Woody disguises his interesting and almost always totally on-point observations on life (and small hints as to how to improve it) as lessons on nature, and birds, in a totally successful and uplifting way. I had the pleasure of his company (and that of his wife) not long ago as he guided my grandson and me through some breathtakingly scenic woods and beaches of the Olympic Peninsula looking for birds and other creatures of nature. We were rewarded with a very special day indeed. If you can't join him in the rain forest or virgin beaches of the great Northwest, you can get much the same magic by reading his book, and of course simply looking up! Enjoy!
