Excerpt from The Sherman Letters: Correspondence Between General and Senator Sherman From 1837 to 1891Soon after beginning the work of arranging my father's papers for publication, I found a series of letters which awoke my deepest interest. They covered a period extending from 1837 to 1891, and proved to be the complete correspondence between my father and his brother John during those (more than fifty) years. These letters, exchanged by two brothers of such eminence, and many of them written during the most stirring events of our country's history, seem to me unique. They form a collection, complete in itself j they are of great historical value, and the expressions of opinion which they contain are so freely given as to furnish an excellent idea of the relations that existed between my father and his brother.Realizing all this, I have decided to publish the correspondence by itself; and in so doing, my chief desire has been to let the letters speak for themselves, and to put them in such form that they may be easily understood. I feel sure that they will command a very general interest and be accorded that ready sympathy which was so freely and lovingly expressed at the time of my father's death.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. "Chemists familiar with conventional quantum mechanics will applaud and benefit greatly from this particularly instructive, thorough and clearly written exposition of density functional theory: its basis, concepts, terms, implementation, and performance in diverse applications. Users of DFT for structure, energy, and molecular property computations, as well as reaction mechanism studies, are guided to the optimum choices of the most effective methods. Well done!" Paul von Ragué Schleyer "A conspicuous hole in the computational chemist's library is nicely filled by this book, which provides a wide-ranging and pragmatic view of the subject.[...It] should justifiably become the favorite text on the subject for practioneers who aim to use DFT to solve chemical problems." J. F. Stanton, J. Am. Chem. Soc. "The authors' aim is to guide the chemist through basic theoretical and related technical aspects of DFT at an easy-to-understand theoretical level. They succeed admirably." P. C. H. Mitchell, Appl. Organomet. Chem. "The authors have done an excellent service to the chemical community. [...] A Chemist's Guide to Density Functional Theory is exactly what the title suggests. It should be an invaluable source of insight and knowledge for many chemists using DFT approaches to solve chemical problems." M. Kaupp, Angew. Chem.

By Pichierri Fabio Computational and Theoretical chemists concerned with the applications of canonical quantum chemistry (molecular orbital) methods to chemically interesting problems know too well how (computationally) demanding is going beyond the Hartree-Fock (HF) approximation by employing the so called post-HF methods. Hence, very often they must resort on using Density Functional Theory (DFT). Here, however, they need to confront themselves with the terminology invented by their physics collegues: Kohn-Sham orbitals, Fermi hole, local and non-local spin-density functionals, generalized gradient approximation, pseudopotentials, and so forth. Any terminology is associated to a certain model of thought, which requires lot of efforts to be fully comprehended. The book of Koch and Holthausen represents a praiseworthy attempt of presenting the basic concepts of DFT to research chemists. This 300-pages book is organized in two parts and it contains 13 chapters. Part A is concerned with the definition of the (DFT) model, while Part B discusses the performance of the model in dealing with molecular structures, vibrational frequencies, thermochemical, electrical and magnetic properties, H-bonds, and chemical reactivity. A rich bibliography is appended at the end of the book. Clearly written and logically organized, this book can be considered "THE Chemists's Guide to DFT" and it deserves five stars.

The authors use many chemical examples, but still can be applied to physics. Many physics books on DFT assume the reader knows most of the material so skips many important details that can leave the reader confused. Surprisingly, these chemists spend entire chapters on just about every piece of DFT. They even give many examples, using the Hydrogen molecule as an example quite a few times. This book is fairly recent, published in 2001. It talks about many DFT codes used today and important functionals such as B3LYP. The book is a little relaxed on the math, so if you are wanting to see some of the detailed math I suggest "Density-Functional Theory of Atoms and Molecules" by Parr & Yang as a good companion book.

Trindle Now just beginning to show its years, this is a clear and authoritative guide to the theory and practice of density functional methods - now the clear choice for a wide range of applications especially for organiometallic systems.

All life on earth first began in the sea, but how long ago? Approximately when might it have it happened? How closely are humans related to fish? Some of these questions are answered through the colorful illustrations in Our One Ocean. This book introduces children to the story of our ocean, and explains why we must celebrate and treasure our water that covers more than 70% of the earth surface. For children ages 6 to 10.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. I love this beautiful book. By NMB I love this book! It tells the story of earth from the Big Bang to the present, concentrating on the oceans and the beginning of life. My grandchildren have often asked me the questions this book answers and now we have this lovely book to get the scientifically correct answers. It's written simply, for children ("Long, long ago...") and the illustrations are gorgeous, realistic but imaginative and in deep beautiful colors. One of my favorites is of Tiktaalik climbing out of the sea to start breathing oxygen with his new lungs. I loved learning ABOUT this creature and I loved finally understanding when and even how life began. For example, Tiktaalik left the ocean around 375 million years ago. The Big Bang was 13.7 billion years ago.Besides the main text, there is supplementary information in smaller print, perfect for a teacher (or grandparent!) to add to the main story. It is rated for ages 6 to 12 but this 72 year old learned a lot!I will keep a copy of this for myself (others will go to the curious kids in my life) because I really like being reminded of when and how life began. Extremely complicated material has been honed down into the basic, miraculous story of life developing in "Our One Ocean." It's a really wonderful book.

Laszlo As told by Nicholas Laszlo (age 13) to Annie Laszlo."Here are the things I really like about the book: Our One Ocean. I liked the pictures and was glad they didn't have too much confusing detail: they kind of tell a good story, showing you what's going on. I also really liked the bright colors and am glad the book is not in black and white. The print is the right size, too. Because I am 13, this book would be much better for my brother Ryse (age 4) and sister Izzy (age 6). Ryse will really love the picture of the big fish trying to eating other fish. Of course I do know how to read to MYSELF but the words in bold print will help me read aloud to my brother and sister. However, I don't know how to SAY all of the words so I wish they had shown us how some words are pronounced.Lastly, I missed page numbers. I wanted to ask about the picture of the people fishing on the page: 200 Thousand Years Ago ( that was a confusing picture: 200 thousand years ago with all those modern buildings?) but I had to go through the book again to find that page.I hope the authors write another book about the earth and oceans for kids my age.

By Film Producer/Clean Energy Entrepreneur A must read for anyone, of any age who wants to understand how climate change - better termed climate disruption - actually works. When we burn nearly a billion tons of coal a year in the U.S., it's not arrogant to think that it might change the climate, it's arrogant to ignore the science and pretend that so much carbon (formerly trapped underground) would not change the atmosphere. Since we're responsible for nearly a third of the world's cumulative emissions and have the technology to change, it's our responsibility to do so. Gasp! is a quick, enjoyable read and it will help you understand the basic science.- Eric Grunebaum, Producer, "The Last Mountain" (a documentary film on coal and wind energy)

This book explores and explains scientific mysteries and principles, leavened with tongue-in-cheek humor and an abundance of illustrations. Chapters are short, but give an understanding of technology and science not available elsewhere. Questions include:

• What holds a satellite up while it goes around the Earth?

• Why is the sky (made out of clear air!) blue instead of green, or just black as night like the sky that high altitude jumper Felix Baumgartner saw?

• How is laser light different from “normal” light?

• Did Columbus really discover that the Earth is round?

• Which one invention will assuredly survive our civilization?

• Why can’t you travel back in time?

If you often feel embarrassed because you don’t have a clue about lasers, the difference between volts, amps and watts, or how jet planes really work – but you would like to understand the physical principles of our modern world, whether you’re a teen or a parent – this book is for you!

To understand the basics of quantum mechanics, or of protons, neutrons and electrons, you don’t need algebra, calculus,

or a lot of equations or technical buzzwords. Too many people have been soured on science by science teachers who have made simple concepts seem complex. This book is the antidote: all it requires is your curiosity.

Advance praise for No Wonder You Wonder!:

“From beginning to end, and with laugh after laugh, I enjoyed every single word of this remarkable book. Phipps is a hell of a good writer, and the kind of physics teacher that I would have loved as a young student. No Wonder You Wonder can be engrossing for anyone with a bit of curiosity, not just the scientific minded.” – Christophe Bonnal, Chief Engineer, CNES (French Space Agency)

About the Author Back in 1961, I decided on a career in science rather than history after hearing President Kennedy announce that we were going to the Moon. I am fascinated by all aspects of science, and a specialist in optics, plasma physics and laser-produced plasmas. I have B.S. and M.S. degrees from MIT and a Ph.D. from Stanford in electrical engineering, have worked in various National Labs for many years, and later formed my own company, Photonic Associates, in Santa Fe. While I am actually a “rocket scientist,” having designed and built laser driven plasma engines for spacecraft, I firmly believe that you don’t have to complete Grade 24 to understand how things work. Ernest Rutherford said “if you can’t explain your physics to a barmaid, it’s probably not very good physics,” and I agree with that sentiment. I want to help you get over your fear of numbers and science. Read this book and see if I’ve been successful!.

By Joram Wolanow I enjoyed reading this friendly and whimsical review of science history from ancient times to the very latest state of the art Science. Written for the layman, it sports a single equation (E=mc^2) and covers an immensely broad expense of topics with historical details that the reader will enjoy with a smile. The author provides numerous examples, sketches and prints that illustrate much of the physics we encounter daily and may not be aware of. I recommend it as required reading for 9th grade students in the first couple of weeks of High School physics before diving into formulas and equations. Written in the first person style, the author is speaking directly to the reader; a style usually reserved to do-it-yourself manuals.

PhippsWhat a delight to read a book on science and discoveries and laugh all the way to the end! What a delight to read a book about serious scientific facts and feel like sitting with the author, while listening to his explanations and stories. One wants to know this guy – Dr. Claude Phipps - and gets to meet him personally.Yes, this book is rich on stories, personal and historical. It is entertaining and inspiring and gives the whole world of science a very warm and enthusiastic hue. This book is stationed at the meeting place between your ordinary daily life and the great mystery of physics, its laws and secrets. You encounter these mysteries everywhere, in nature – watching a sunset or moon eclipse, or in practical life – sitting in a jet and holding your breath, when this iron-bird lifts off the runway – do you know how it does that? Do you know that it was Louis XVI who ordered Marquis de Condorcet “to establish a system of measurement that was to be for all people for all times”? That’s our metric system, used everywhere around the globe. Do you know why satellites steadily follow their path and don’t plummet down onto our earth? You will know after you read this book.“No Wonder You Wonder!” is a real “coffee table book” that should have its place in your living room; you just sit down, grab it and open it at a random chapter and get informed and entertained, both at once. Ervin How happy and pleased I am that Stan and Jan Berenstain's son has continued with their Bear books. I have loved all of them and have shared them with numerous children over the years. I especially like this one When I Grow Up because it is such a good one for little people to begin their thinking about careers. I would definitely want this book in an elementary school library and the classrooms as well. The illustrations as always are great. The color is brilliant and the story is excellent. It is never too early to begin pondering the ideas of what to do when you are grown up. More of our children need to start thinking that way. This is a very good book especially when studying careers at school . I am a great fan of the Berenstains. Keep them coming!

There are so many great ways to talk about this topic, I was baffled at the presentation in this book...brother an sister bumped into the professor in the park and then called their mom and dad on a cell phone to ask permission to get onto his bus then rode some sort of magical bus that toured them through all the career possibilities it was weird and dumb and awkward. If you read the Dino Dig then you know who the professor is, but if you didn't then he'd be a new character and it even weirder. Pass on this one.

I Am Yoga, by Susan Verde

From School Library Journal PreS-Gr 2—Another pleasing picture book from the creative team behind The Museum (2013) and You and Me (2015, both Abrams). Verde's lyrical language meshes well with Reynolds's peaceful, tranquil cartoon illustrations, done in muted tones. A young girl explains why she does yoga and describes each move as she does them. "I can sail on the sea./ I go with the flow" accompanies The Boat Pose. "I can carry beauty with me./ I am full" with a Bow/Basket Pose. Fun to read, the narration encourages movement, and the author note and information on each pose at the end of the book are great teaching tools. VERDICT A delightful introduction to the subject as well as a wonderful read-aloud for movement and mindfulness.—Jane Hebert, Glenside Public Library District, Glendale Heights, IL

Review STARRED REVIEW "Empowering affirmations and playful illustrations will inspire both children and adults to slow down and strike a pose." (Kirkus Reviews)"...whimsically detailed, color-washed ink illustrations positively present yoga as a means for rejuvenation and inspiration... children’s yoga teacher Verde highlights yoga concepts and potential benefits for kids and adults and provides the names, descriptions, and instructions for the 16 poses featured in this book." So, I decided to try these "baby" steps and I am amazed. I can do everyone of these poses and I can feel where it is stretching those lazy muscles. I still have a long way to go to perfect the poses but this is a great start. I found I sleep much better too after doing these.

23 of 24 people found the following review helpful. Simply wonderful! By Steven R. McEvoy I need to be honest and state I picked up this book for a number of reasons. First Peter H. Reynolds is an amazing illustrator and an excellent author in his own right. And second last year I became a certified DDP Yoga instructor and love practicing with my kids. And third the cover was so amazing I was literally waiting and waiting for the book to finally come out. This book did not disappoint. In fact it was far more than I ever expected. My son has neurofibromatosis and one of the reasons I pursued Yoga certification was because he loved working with me. This book will bring to him a side of yoga I need more of in my life, focus, calmness, centering and mindfulness. The story by Susan is one that almost all of us can learn from. And the illustrations are amongst Reynold's best ever. The balance of color and light, the pallet used and the mix of full color and monochromatic illustrations works so well. This was a wonderful book that I have already read numerous times and know I will be sharing with my kids, friends and family often. It is wonderful!

15 of 16 people found the following review helpful. Stunning and uplifting By Daniel G. Geren This book is beautifully illustrated with wonderful motivations to introduce a youth to yoga. Each page has the young girl colorfully rendered in a yoga position with an imaginative written meditation. Each of these ideas are incredibly uplifting and would go far to add growth of the mind to that of the body to anyone's practice. The book concludes with common english and sanskit names and detailed descriptions of the poses in the story. I will have to couple this book with my future purchases of All I See Is Part of Me by Chara M. Curtis for baby shower gifts. Love it!

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Not peanuts plots/characterizations. not written by schultz. Poor book timed with film release from new owners. By Woofdog If you didn't/don't know or care for Peanuts characters and situations as written by Charles Schultz for decades, then raise this review to 3 stars. The story itself is harmless outside of that context. If you do/did, then know that the book using what claims to be original Schultz art (I wonder how many pages are composites) with a very definitely non-Schultz story. The characters present all speak/think/behave out of character. This property is majority-owned by Iconix now, and this is them digging for grave-goods from the Peanuts property.I won't buy another one of these. There are better ways to introduce young children to peanuts. I assume this book is timed to exploit the interest caused by the film.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. 3 Hearts for Cord & Maloree By Romance Between The Sheets Please note this review may contain spoilers.Maloree is a romance writer who supports her US troops by buying them cups of coffee through a coffee donation program. One fateful day her cup of coffee goes to Cord, an Army Medic, and the two quickly start a pen-pal relationship. It’s not long until receiving Maloree’s emails becomes the highlight of Cord’s day and vice-versa. Feelings become involved and when his leave is granted, he wants to meet the woman he feels he already knows and maybe even loves. When they finally meet, the tension that’s built up over the past few months explodes as soon as Maloree opens her front door.WITH GRATITUDE AND LOVE was a good story; the idea of love growing over several thousand miles and having that love realised when you first spend time together is a nice one. But sadly I found that this story wasn’t for me; I didn’t hate it, but I didn’t love it either. The story is told in dual POVs, is a stand-alone (but could become part of a series) and does come with a beautiful HEA.10% of ALL proceeds from release day, November 19, 2015 through January 1, 2016 are being given to CUP OF JOE FOR A JOE from Green Beans Coffee.I was given an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. One of my favorite Skye Turner books By Jamie Rhodes My words in this review will not do justice to the story that I just read. There is just something about a man in uniform who has a good soul, who has morals, and is humble that just gets to me. I want to crawl inside the words of this book and just give him a good hug. And, he loves his momma. Swoon. Skye has a way of connecting the reader to her characters. I felt as if I were in the book with Maloree and Cord. I felt the jitters of a first meeting, the thrill of the first kiss, the passion of the first time together, and the sorrow of knowing that their time would be short. Maloree is a romance author who is part of the Cup of Joe program. She sends a cup of coffee to soldiers who she doesn't even know. Cord is one of the recipients of that cup of coffee. He sends her a thank you email, and the story goes from there. Let me tell you, Maloree, romance author, has herself a "real life book boyfriend".I love their sputtering and rambling around each other. I love that Cord is a good guy with morals not out chasing tails constantly. The biggest problem in the book is that he has to return to active duty. Mal isn't sure if she can be "the supportive girlfriend". I want to share a few of my favorite quotes from the book. These just called to me to share. "You should always be kissed as if it's the first time and the last, time, Maloree."Another of my favorite quotes came as Mallory was trying to decide her future; "Maloree, unless God calls me home, and even then, I'm going to fight him on it, I'm going to come back to you. I love you."And my last favorite; "Mal, I cannot make promises. I won't make you a promise I might not be able to keep. I cannot tell you with 100% certainty that I'll come back to you. But, I can promise you that no matter what, I'll fight my ass off to get back to you no matter what I have to face. Nothing can keep me from returning home to you as long as there's a breath in my body. That is something I can promise you." I think Skye did an excellent job of showing us what military families, wives, or girlfriends go through when their man leaves for duty. So if you are a military spouse, girlfriend, or mom, I salute you and am proud of you as well as your man.Dual Point of view. No cliffhanger. Just beautiful. I think that this has to be one of my favorite Skye Turner books. And now I think I will be going to a web site to sign up to be part of a Cup of Joe program. It's the least I can do.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. steamy cup of cord ; ) By Carrie Marie Cord & Maloree's story is a sweet tale of what can happen from a simple "thank you." Maloree sends a cup of coffee to a soldier, Cord is the recipient of that coffee, and his thank you for her thank you starts a friendship that blossoms into love. : ) I like the pacing of this story - the actual physical time they're together is only about a week, but the way the author uses email & Skype sessions to share their relationship is very well done. Also, just a small plug for the program that inspired the program in this story - Cup of Joe For A Joe is an awesome program to send a very inexpensive thank you to our men & women in the military. It's a very inspiring program, really! And this story is a very inspiring & lovely one. : )
