Whitlock I've come to rely on this guide to refer to for inspiration when planning marketing and promotions any time of year. Not just the wonderful items in it, also great to get your brain going on your own weirdness. We know that our brains are attracted to whatever is twisted and different. The Weird and Wacky Holiday Marketing Guide is a tool for standing out in any market

It is a very useful reference to own By Tina Collins This book is so in-depth, I couldn't begin to imagine just how long it took Ginger Marks to research and write. In marketing, you may have come across advice to use holidays such as these to market your product. It is no different in book marketing. It is a very useful reference to own if your book's theme can fit into a given public holiday. I wish I could make use of it! My books never seem to fit in with anything. The holidays are listed by month and day, which can make searching through it a bit laborious and time-consuming. I'm wondering if it would make things easier if the holidays could have been listed by genre. Would that have made it easier to look for a reference to your book's theme? I suppose you could look each month up as they come to see if it's relevant to you. Most of the holidays and dates are so obscure that, I expect, many people wouldn't be aware that they even exist.Examples of non-traditional holidays you can find in this guide are Cuckoo Dancing Week in January, For Pete's Sake Day in February and Electric Razor Day in March. I'd be curious to know if anyone has written books that fitted into these! Maybe there is a different meaning to them and they are not all literal. The book also lists the usual, well-known holidays such as Christmas and Easter.Overall, I think it's a book that could prove handy if you have some spare time or you want to write something incorporating a holiday listed. Then, there is no excuse for not finding at least some inspiration!Book given in exchange for an honest review.

Every day there is a journal prompt with roughly 2/3 of a page to write in, plus a section at the bottom for daily gratitude practices. Lots of margin space for whatever other notes you wish to jot down. Not sure why both New Moon and Full Moon are denoted in the journal as "Full Moon" and it's not consistently added to the days with those lunar events (I didn't see any for January, but lo and behold there are 2 "Full moons" in February (Oops?!). I just made a note in mine, as that is something I do follow. But this will definitely be a journal I come back for in the years to come. I haven't read the companion book yet (it's on my reading list), but I can still make sense of the journal prompts without it.

By ®√ First off let me just say I'm not sure how easy it would be to develop this book's cast with only one or two hundred pages in it, but how many pages would YOU as an author expect to spend 'developing characters'? I'll wait. And yes it's a book about monsters and a post apocalyptic setting, however the concept is still fresh one... To me anyway. I personally felt the character development was fine given the brief nature of these books. I would also like to say THANK YOU for the reasonably priced read! I was wondering if there would be that extra added element at the end, given the nature of the cryers themselves. Can't wait to see what happens next!

I liked the characters, even though they were poorly developed. That's why the two stars. Amateur effort at best. Sorry to say in the old book economy this work would be hard pressed to find a publisher. However like most avid e-book readers I finished the book because I paid for it. I will recommend this book nor will I purchase the fourth book from this author.

By illustrating such common emotions as happiness, sadness, anger, fear, and calm, this sensitive book gently encourages young children to open up with parents, teachers, and daycare providers. And kids will LOVE the bright illustrations and amazing 3-D pop-ups on every page!

The Color Monster: A Pop-Up Book of Feelings, by Anna Llenas

From School Library Journal PreS-K—Employing a rainbow of tones, a young girl tries to help her multihued friend understand why he is "feeling all mixed up." The unnamed child distinguishes five emotions (happiness, anger, sadness, fear, and calm) and articulates what each one might feel like by equating it with a color. A smiling golden monster on a spread featuring yellow leaves and cutouts represents happiness, describing it as "yellow like the sun." The text explains, "When you're happy you laugh, jump, dance and play. You want to share that feeling with everyone." Conversely, when blue, "you're sad you might want to cry or be alone." Most dramatically, a red monster jumps off the page and declares, "When you're angry, you want to stomp and roar and shout, 'It's not fair!'" Emotions are described in age-appropriate terms, and although calm is a bit tricky ("you breathe slowing and deeply. You feel at peace."), there's no question what the fellow bathed in green is feeling as he rests in a hammock, eyes closed with a smile on his face. A final emotion is left unnamed for readers or listeners to identify, but pink hearts give it away. A number of books, such as Molly Bang's When Sophie Gets Angry—Really, Really Angry (Scholastic, 2004), explore how a child deals with a particular emotion; Color Monster considers the range of feelings a child can experience. As with most pop-ups, durability is a question. VERDICT Less a story than a vehicle to initiate a reassuring conversation about emotions and how to identify them.—Daryl Grabarek, School Library Journal

Review “A number of books . . . explore how a child deals with a particular emotion; Color Monster considers the range of feelings a child can experience. . . a vehicle to initiate a reassuring conversation about emotions and how to identify them.” —School Library Journal online ". . . teaches toddlers how to identify their emotions. This sensitive book also encourages young ones to open up and discuss how they feel, even when their thoughts are confusing." —Parents

By Unknown I bought this book for my 4 year old who recently has been showing a lot of sadness/anger since we welcomed a new baby into our family and he's no longer the baby anymore. The book was sealed when I purchased it from Barnes & Noble so I didn't know what it looked like on the inside until we got ready for bed and we opened it up. We were both amazed! The book is well written in such a way so that parents enjoy reading it and kids understand it, and the pop up pictures were breathtaking! We were so in love with the book that my 7 year old came running from his bedroom and wanted to hear it from the beginning, and then they both took turns looking through the book two more times each on their own. My mom came over this morning as well and the kids ran to get the book to show it to her. I really love this book and I wish this author had more books to buy!! I've already recommended it to quite a few friends and they've added it to their carts/wish lists for Christmas. LOVE!

And by the end, she and her monster uncover another emotion, one that they haven’t even labeled, which is accompanied by pink hearts. The Color Monster: A Pop-Up Book of Feelings by Anna Llenas is delightful to look at and read, but it also is a great tool for helping young kids sort out their emotions. Excerpt from The Rossettis: Dante Gabriel and ChristinaIn writing of Rossetti I have written of a man who cannot by any possibility be known through one biographer alone. Those who came in contact with him received impressions as various as strong, and he has been to a singular extent the object of both eulogy and detraction. In his letters he gives a presentation of himself undoubtedly faithful so far as it goes, but it does not go very far. In his poems and in his pictures we find revelations of his attitude toward life which to a large degree supplement the letters, and in the numerous and frequently contradictory opinions expressed by his companions we have many glimpses of an individuality that puzzled them despite the frankness with which it was manifested to them, or perhaps because of that frankness.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Ponderous, Somber Biography of the Rossettis By Valerie J. Wood I was very disappointed in this book. Wanting to know more about Christina Rossetti, in particular (but also interested in her artist/writer brother, Dante Gabriel Rossetti), I had hopes this would be an enlightening book about the family. Sometimes the books published closer to the actual time period of the subjects of the biography have a keener insight into the individuals. Sadly, I found this to be ponderous, over-explanatory and even dull droning on and on concerning pre-Rafaelitism, and a difficult read to stick with. I found it to be less of a dual biography (actually 3/4 of the book is about Dante Gabriel and less than 1/4 about Christina Rossetti), than an attempted critique of the art and writings of the subjects. Indeed, particularly concerning Christina, the emphasis is more on the poetry and an attempted explanation/evaluation than that of her life and delving into the kind of amazing intelligence that produced such works as Goblin's Market.I have ordered a couple of other biographies of Christina Rossetti, and have hope they will be far more interesting. I realize this is a reprint of a book published in 1923; nevertheless the writing, editing/punctuation and presentation leaves a lot to be desired. Such a pity. This Rossetti brother and sister in particular are both most fascinating folks; the book is, unfortunately, almost lifeless at times. There is comparatively little literature concerning Christina Rossetti available so far--perhaps the other biographies available will be more detailed and enlightening.

From the Inside Flap Cormac opened the door a few moments later, his blue plaid shirt all the way unbuttoned revealing an impressive chest with pecs that gave way to an even more impressive set of six pack abs.She tried not to stare at his torso. He'd always carried muscle but he looked even better now than she remembered. All that muscle...all that tan skin...She held the bag out. "Pizza," she sang, trying to cover the fact that she was a tad flustered by his very appealing body."Thank you," he said, his deep voice husky and gravelly, putting vivid pictures in her head.Heat surged through her. Her skin felt hot all over. "My pleasure," she said tightly."I feel like I should tip you...or something."She heard the way he paused and then his inflection when he said or something. Her imagination was working overtime. She could only think hot and sexy thoughts.Suddenly he leaned forward and slid his hand behind her head. His head dropped and his lips covered hers.It wasn't a shy or tentative kiss. His lips were firm and warm and he kissed her as if he knew her, and remembered her and she shivered because it felt so right, even though it was so wrong. She couldn't kiss him, shouldn't kiss him, and yet the pressure of his lips was achingly familiar. She lifted a hand to his cheek, breathing him in, her heart hurting. She'd once loved him so much. She'd never been happier than with him. As the kiss deepened her eyes burned and her chest squeezed tight.Lock this away, she told herself, save the memory but end it now...You must end this now.

Cormac won complete custody of Daisy when her parents were killed and Whitney, her godmother, tried for custody of Daisy herself. I don't know why she didn't sue for visitation after she lost but that's just one more thing that confused me about this story, as well as why Cormac wouldn't want the child's godmother involved in her life when she had no female influence. At one point in retrospect Cormac said he wanted to marry Whitney and he had the ring in his pocket but a couple fighting at another table in the restaurant was the reason he didn't ask her. He didn't "want to be those people". At another point in the book, he said that he didn't marry her because he didn't love her the way she loved him, he "wasn't there" in terms of feelings. And yet in even another instance, he said he flipped when Whitney referred to the date of their one year relationship as an "anniversary," even though, technically, that's exactly what it is. So I was never really clear as to why he up and dumped Whitney without reason or why she would continue to work for him. Also, I had to laugh at how Cormac described Whitney as "challenging his every decision" when, in fact, she was designing his office space and home space with pretty much zero input from him. He was happy to sit back and let her do it all. She came across as a doormat and he was a user.

By Splashes Into Books If you love to read a superb, heart warming festive romance, stop reading this review and get yourself a copy of this book to read instead! This is the fifth story involving the Sheenan family from Marietta, Montana and a brilliant story. The Daisy in the title is now four years old and has already lost both her parents in a tragic car accident when she was just two years old. Her parents had made their friend and her godfather, Cormac Sheenan, her guardian – much to the dismay of her godmother, his ex-girlfriend, Whitney. Whitney contested the guardianship in court but lost and has seen nothing of him or Daisy in the intervening time. Now she’s moving with his company to Marietta though only till her resignation notice runs out but hopes to see Daisy again whilst they are all there.Cormac Sheenan is a media mogul who has has adopted Daisy and truly loves her. When a gunman causes a lockdown at Daisy’s kindergarten, Cormac has had enough of city life and plans to move the headquarters of his business to his hometown of Marietta in Montana. On their flight to Marietta the man sat across from them has a long curly white beard, a jovial demeanour and Daisy immediately recognises he is Santa! She goes to ask him for something special for Christmas but won’t tell Cormac just what she wants . . .This is a moving festive story as the little girl’s godparents reconnect, past events are revisited and love is given a second chance. Just don’t expect anything to go smoothly for these characters – it is only with the intervention of Santa that they’ll ever stand a chance to achieve their HEA!A lovely addition to the stories set in Marietta, Montana, with events, people and places mentioned in other stories also having roles to play in this one. It is an enthralling, entertaining and well written, fantastic festive read that I loved and have no hesitation in highly recommending to anyone who is looking to read a very moving second chance festive romance. Thanks to the author, publisher and NetGalley, too, for letting me read an ARC of this book in exchange for this, an honest review.

I don't know how Jane Porter does it, but somehow she manages to create a little window on a special world when she writes and you feel like you have front row seats. This book is the fifth in Jane's Taming of the Sheenans series but don't stress if it's your introduction to these lovely books - it works just fine by itself.Set in Marietta Montana this book is loosely based on the Christmas movie Miracle on 34th Street, and tells the story of Cormac Sheenan and Whitney Alder, the only girl Cormac has ever loved if only he'd have the courage to admit it. Thrown into the mix is Cormac's adopted daughter Daisy, who is also Whitney's god-daughter and who has a special Christmas wish. With snow swirling and magic happening thanks to Marietta's own Santa Claus, Kris Crinkles, this story is filled with hope from the start to the finish. It's beautifully written and as been a joy to read. Thoroughly recommended!

ASD & Jane Austen birth new perspectives By Kindle Customer This book, like the rest in the series, is a straight forward modern day telling of Austen's book. Jenni James is always fun and really gives the characters in this story their own voices. I love that the main character, Ellyn, has high functioning autism. The author takes us into her mind and shows us what makes sense and doesn't, what is a challenge to her and how she deals with it. Everyone that sees the world through autism is different, but I love how seeing this story though Ellyn's eyes sheds light on this corner of the spectrum. I love books that bring awareness to ASD.I loved it and would recommend it to all ages.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. The Dashwood sisters are back in a big way! By Mary Bell I loved that this book let's you see inside Ellyn Dashwood's head. Seeing her thoughts helps explain why the two sisters are so different.I was rooting for Ellyn as I got to read about her inner struggles going to new school, talking to a cute boy or dealing with loss. In fact, I was rooting for all the characters. Well, the good ones anyway. This new telling of Sense and Sensibility has everything you loved about the original....and then so much more!

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. I would give it 10 stars if it was allowed By Rachel Nagy I love this writer so much. I have to be careful of when I start one of her books because I have no self control and can't stop reading until it is done. And they are clean and have wonderful character development. This book was fascinating to see the world through someone with autism's eyes. Yet again, well done jenni James

Llama Llama Gram and Grandpa, by Anna Dewdney

From School Library Journal PreS—Dewdney tackles the topic of staying at Gram and Grandpa's overnight. Llama is excited for his special visit as he packs up his clothes and his stuffed animal, Fuzzy Llama. However, when he unpacks, he realizes, rather upsettingly, that his comfort object was left behind. Gram and Grandpa spend the day distracting little Llama by playing outside or building in the workshop, but with each activity, he anxiously remembers Fuzzy Llama's absence. While the text carries along with a seemingly pleasing nighttime routine ("Take a bath./Then comb and brush./Settle in for stories. Hush./Finish books/and get a kiss"), the illustrations show Llama looking more distressed and anxious before bed. After Gram asks what's the matter, we watch as "Llama's lips begin to quiver./Llama starts to shake and shiver./Llama needs his Fuzzy near,/but FUZZY LLAMA ISN'T HERE!" The following page shows all three Llamas looking at readers for help. Quickly, it's Grandpa who finds a solution. Grandpa offers a special toy from when he was just a little boy. In a satisfying ending, Llama realizes he's not alone and that he's in his "home… away from home." With a carefully crafted rhyming text and comforting painted images that match genuinely the emotion of a toddler's first night away from home, this book is a charming success. VERDICT Parents and caregivers will appreciate the reassuring message that this story offers for one-on-one sharing, and it will function as a heartwarming read-aloud in a bedtime-themed storytime.—Brianne Colombo, Pequannock Township Public Library, NJ

We love the Llama Llama books and I really appreciated the fact that Anna Dewdney has decided to honor grandparents in her new book. It makes me feel special. Through the years I have seen so many young children enjoy the Llama Llama books. They are just pure fun to read and we love the illustrations a lot. I am enjoying reading this one to our greats and even one of the grands! Llama Llama is just good stuff.

8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Another Llama Llama winner. By My 2 Cents As a grandparent I'm a huge fan of Anna Dewdney's Llama Llama series books (the little ones love them too). So of course I had to immediately order this latest book when it was released earlier this month. In this story little Llama Llama is going for his first overnight ever. He loves spending time with Gram and Grandpa even though he's probably a little nervous. He helps mom pack his overnight bag, and gets ready for the car ride. After mom leaves and Llama Llama goes to unpack his bag he realizes "fuzzy" Llama is missing and he can't stop thinking about him. However, he's still enjoying some nice snacks and some new ways to keep busy and have new kinds of fun at Gram and Grandpa's, but when bedtime comes he is missing "fuzzy" llama. Grandpa, however, manages to come to the rescue and makes everything all right. What is so nice about this book and the other Llama Llama books in the series is that they discuss a problem or issue and come up with a solution in the process. Each book is told in simple, rhyme verse which children (especially little ones) love and find easy to memorize as well. The bold illustrations, pleasing colors and details make this book and this series a pleaser for kids, parents, teachers and of course grandparents.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. I love this book! By Lauren R. Like all of Anna Dewdney's children books, this is another MUST HAVE. Llama Llama Gram and Grandpa is cute, funny and teaches some morals all at the same time. I love this book.

My previous lives form the meat of the book. They start 300,000 years ago and I am coming to the Earth on a spaceship from the Pleiades Star Cluster and I am tall and blue. I freak out and write a book about the experiences. Love Russell

From the Inside Flap Excerpt from #HeartThe second the car dropped us off in the driveway, I hurried to the front door, fumbling in my bag for the keys. Of course, I dropped my bag, and half the contents spilled out all over the porch. "Whatcha doing over there?" Romeo asked, clear amusement in his voice as he stepped up onto the porch behind me. "You know me," I replied as I tried to scoop up my stuff that was scattered about. "Graceful as ever." His large feet and jean-clad legs appeared before me. I paused in reaching for my ChapStick and smiled a little because of the déjà vu I was experiencing. I craned my neck and looked up his long, muscular body standing over me. He was smiling, and I could tell by the look in his eyes that he was remembering the moment we met as well. He bent down to help me pick up my things, and our hands brushed together as we both reached for the lip balm. I paused and looked up. It was still there. That jolt of electricity, that surge of chemistry right to my heart. Even now that I was wearing his ring, he still affected me like that first day. I hoped it never changed. But unlike that day, he didn't hurry to scoop everything up and stand. Instead, Romeo fell back on his butt and pulled me into his lap. My things still littered the concrete, and the air was cold and brisk. I didn't notice any of it. All I felt was his large, warm body beneath mine. "I should have pulled you into my lap that day," he murmured, stroking my hair out of my face. "I should have looked into your beautiful face and known just how badly I needed you." I pulled my knees closer to my chest, and Romeo wrapped both arms around me, holding me close. "We were from two different worlds," I whispered. "I was out of your league." "No. I was out of yours. But we created our own world, didn't we? A world I wouldn't trade for anything."

Insectivorous Plants (annotated), by Charles Darwin

About the Author Charles Darwin was an English naturalist and author best-known for his revolutionary theories on the origin of species, human evolution, and natural selection. A life-long interest in the natural world led Darwin to neglect his medical studies and instead embark on a five-year scientific voyage on the HMS Beagle, where he established his reputation as a geologist and gathered much of the evidence that fuelled his later theories.A prolific writer, Darwin s most famous published works include The Voyage of the Beagle, On the Origin of Species, The Descent of Man, and Selection in Relation to Sex, and The Expression of Emotions in Man and Animals. Darwin died in 1882, and in recognition of his contributions to science, is buried in Westminster Abbey along with John Herschel and Isaac Newton.

A Natural History of the Sonoran Desert takes readers deep into its vast expanse, looking closely at the relationships of plants and animals with the land and people, through time and across landscapes. Excerpt. © Reprinted by permission. All rights reserved. The sound of the car door slamming echoed through the still night. Emma Leighton looked up from the book she'd been reading in surprise; as housekeeper of Larenzo Cavelli's isolated retreat in the mountains of Sicily, she hadn't been expecting anyone. Larenzo was in Rome on business, and no one came to the villa perched high above Sicily's dusty hill towns and villages. Her employer liked his privacy. She heard brisk footsteps on the stone path that led to the villa's front door, an enormous thing of solid oak banded with iron. She tensed, waiting for a knock; the villa had an elaborate security system with a numbered code that was only known by her and Larenzo, and the door was locked, as Larenzo always insisted. She held her breath as she heard the creak of the door opening and then the beep of buttons being pressed, followed by a longer beeping indicating the security system had been deactivated. As her heart did a queasy little flip, Emma tossed her book aside and rose from her chair. Larenzo never came back early or unexpectedly. He always texted her, to make sure she had everything ready for his arrival: his bed made with freshly ironed sheets, the fridge stocked, the pool heated. But if it wasn't him…who was it?She heard footsteps coming closer, a heavy, deliberate tread, and then a figure, tall and rangy, appeared in the doorway.'Larenzo—' Emma pressed one hand to her chest as she let out a shaky laugh of relief. 'You scared me. I wasn't expecting you.''I wasn't expecting to come here.' He stepped into the spacious sitting room of the villa, and as the lamplight washed over his face Emma sucked in a shocked breath. Larenzo's skin looked grey, and there were deep shadows under his eyes. His hair was rumpled, as if he'd driven his hand through the ink-dark strands.'Are you—are you all right?'His mouth twisted in a grim smile. 'Why, do I not look all right?''No, not really.' She tried to lighten her words with a smile, but she really was alarmed. In the nine months she'd been Larenzo's housekeeper, she'd never seen him look like this, not just tired or haggard, but as if the life force that was so much a part of who he was, that restless, rangy energy and charisma, had drained away.'Are you ill?' she asked. 'I can get you something…''No. Not ill.' He let out a hollow laugh. 'But clearly I must look terrible.''Well, as a matter of fact, yes, you do.''Thank you for your honesty.''Sorry—''Don't be. I can't bear lies.' A sudden, savage note had entered his voice, making Emma blink. Larenzo crossed the room to the liquor cabinet in the corner. 'I need a drink.'She watched as he poured himself a large measure of whisky and then tossed it back in one burning swallow. His back was to her, the silk of his suit jacket straining against his shoulders and sinewy back. He was an attractive man, a beautiful man even, with his blue-black hair and piercing grey eyes, his tall, powerful body always encased in three-thousand-euro suits.Emma had admired his form the way you admired Michelangelo's David, as a work of art. She had decided when she'd taken this job that she wasn't going to make the mistake of developing some schoolgirl crush on her boss. Larenzo Cavelli was out of her league. Way, way out of her league. And, if the tabloids were true, he had a different woman on his arm and in his bed every week.'I wasn't expecting you until the end of the month,' she said.'I had a change of plans.' He took out the stopper in the crystal decanter of whisky and poured himself another healthy measure. 'Obviously.'She didn't press the point, because, while they'd developed a fairly amicable working relationship over the last nine months, he was still her boss. She couldn't actually say she knew Larenzo Cavelli. Since she'd taken the job as housekeeper he'd come to the villa only three times, never more than for a couple of days. He mostly lived in Rome, where he kept an apartment, or travelled for work as CEO of Cavelli Enterprises.'Very well,' she finally said. 'Will you be staying long?'He drained his glass for a second time. 'Probably not.''Well, the night at least,' she answered briskly. She didn't know what was going on with Larenzo, whether it was a business deal gone bust or a love affair gone bad, or something else entirely, but she could still do her job. 'The sheets on your bed are clean. I'll go switch the heating on for the pool.''Don't bother,' Larenzo answered. He put his empty glass on the table with a clink. 'There's no need.''It's no trouble,' Emma protested, and Larenzo shrugged, his back to her.'Fine. Maybe I'll have one last swim.'His words replayed through her mind as she left him and walked through the spacious, silent rooms of the villa to the back door that led to a brick terrace overlooking the mountains, a teardrop-shaped pool as its impressive centrepiece. One last swim. Was he planning on leaving, on selling the villa?Emma gazed out at the Nebrodi mountains and shivered slightly, for the air still held a pine-scented chill. All was quiet save for the rustling of the wind high up in the trees. Larenzo's villa was remote, miles from the nearest market town, Troina; in the daylight Emma could see its terracotta-tiled houses and shops nestled in the valley below. She went there several times a week to shop and socialise; she had a couple of friends amidst the Sicilian shopkeepers and matrons. If Larenzo was planning on selling the villa, she'd miss living here. She never stayed anywhere long, and she would have probably started feeling restless in a few months anyway, but… She glanced once more at the night-cloaked hills and valleys, the mellow stone of the villa perched on its hill gleaming in the moonlight. She liked living here. It was peaceful, with plenty of subjects to photograph. She'd be sad to leave, if it came to that. But maybe Larenzo just meant a swim before he left for Rome again. She switched on the heating and then turned to go inside; as she turned a shadowy form loomed up in front of her and her breath came out in a short gasp. She must have swayed or stumbled a little, for Larenzo put his hands on her shoulders to steady her. They stood like that for a moment in the doorway, his strong hands curling around her shoulders so she could feel the warmth of his palms through the thin cotton of her T-shirt, and how her heart pounded beneath it. She didn't think he'd ever actually touched her before. She moved one way, and he moved another, so it was almost as if they were engaged in a struggle or an awkward dance. Then Larenzo dropped his hands from her shoulders and stepped back.'Scusi.''My fault,' she murmured, her heart still thudding, and moved quickly through the kitchen to flick on the lights. Bathed in a bright electric glow, things felt more normal, even if she could still feel the imprint of his hands on her shoulders, so warm and strong. 'So.' She turned to him with a quick smile, a brisk look. 'Have you eaten? I can make you something.'He looked as if he was about to refuse, and then he shrugged. 'Why not? I'll go change while you cook.''What would you like to eat?'Another shrug as he turned away. 'Whatever you make will be fine.'She watched him disappear down the hallway, her lips pursed in an uncertain frown. She'd never seen Larenzo like this. Not that they'd actually had that much conversation, beyond discussing pool maintenance and house repairs. But even when talking about such mundane matters, Larenzo Cavelli had exuded a compelling charisma and energy, a life force. He was a man who, when entering a room, made everyone turn and take notice. Men tried to suppress their envy, and women undressed him with their eyes. Emma counted herself as wilfully immune to the man's magnetic vitality, but its absence now made her uneasy. Her frown deepening, Emma opened the fridge and stared at the few items inside. She always did a big shop right before Larenzo arrived; she bought all the ingredients for gourmet meals for one and made them for him to eat alone, usually out on the terrace overlooking the mountains. Now she glanced askance at the half-dozen eggs, a few slices of pancetta and the end of a wedge of cheese that comprised the entire contents of the fridge. With a sigh she took it all out. A bacon and cheese omelette it was.She was just sliding it onto a plate when Larenzo came downstairs, dressed now in faded jeans and a grey T-shirt, his hair damp and spiky from a shower. She'd seen him casually dressed before, many times, but for some reason now, perhaps because of how different Larenzo seemed, her heart gave a weird little flip and she felt awareness shiver over her skin. Clearly he still possessed some of that charisma and vitality, for she felt the force of it now.'Sorry it's just an omelette,' she said. 'I'll do a big shop tomorrow.''That won't be necessary.''But—'"Aren't you going to join me?' He arched an eyebrow, nodding towards the single plate she'd laid out, a challenge simmering in his eyes.In the handful of times he'd been at the villa, Larenzo had never asked her to eat with him. The two of them alone on the terrace would have been awkward, intimate, and Emma happily ate leftovers in the kitchen, one of her photography books propped against the salt and pepper shakers.'Um…I've already eaten,' she said after a second's pause. It had to be past ten o'clock at night.'Come have a glass of wine. I don't feel like being alone.'Was that a command? Emma shrugged her assent; she wouldn't mind a glass of wine, and perhaps Larenzo would tell her what was going on.'Okay,' she said, and she fetched two glasses while Larenzo selected a bottle of red wine from the rack above the sink. While Larenzo took his plate of eggs out to the terrace, Emma retrieved her sweater from the sitting room, slipping her arms through the sleeves as she stepped outside. The moon was high and full above the pine-blanketed hills, the Nebrodi range's highest peak, Mount Soro, piercing the night sky. Larenzo was already seated at a table overlooking the pool, the water glimmering in the moonlight, but he rose as Emma came forward with the two glasses and proffered the bottle of wine. She nodded her assent and sat down while he poured.'This is very civilised,' she said as she accepted the glass.'Yes, isn't it?' Larenzo answered. 'Well, let's enjoy it while we can.' He raised his glass in a toast and Emma lifted hers as well before taking a sip. The wine was rich and velvety-smooth, clearly expensive, but she put her glass down after one sip and gave her boss as direct a look as she could.'You're sure everything is all right?''As right as it can be,' Larenzo answered, taking a sip of wine.'What does that mean?'He set his glass down and stretched his legs out in front of him. 'Exactly that. But I don't want to talk about myself, not tonight. For a few hours I'd just like to forget.'Forget what? Emma wondered, but clearly Larenzo didn't want her to ask.'You've been my housekeeper for nearly a year and I don't really know the first thing about you,' he continued, and Emma stared at him in surprise.'You want to talk about me?''Why not?''Because…well, because you've never expressed an interest in knowing anything about me before. And actually, I'm quite a boring person.'He smiled, his teeth gleaming in the darkness. 'Let me be the judge of that.'Emma shook her head slowly. This evening was becoming almost surreal. 'What do you want to know?' 'Where did you grow up?'An innocuous enough question, she supposed. 'Everywhere, really. I was a diplomat's kid.''I think I remember you mentioning that in your interview.' He'd interviewed her in Rome, where she'd been working as a chambermaid in a hotel, just one in a string of jobs she'd had as she moved from city to city, exploring the world and taking photographs.'And you haven't minded being stuck up here in the hills of Sicily?' he asked, his wine glass raised to his lips.'All by yourself?'She shrugged. 'I'm used to being on my own.' And she preferred it that way. No ties, no obligations, no disappointments. The occasional bout of loneliness was not too high a price to pay for that kind of freedom.'Even so.''You obviously like it,' she pointed out. 'Since you own this place.''Yes, but I travel and spend time in cities. I'm not up here all the time.''Well, as I said, I like it.' For now, anyway. She never remained anywhere for too long, always preferring to move on, to find new experiences, and from the sceptical look on Larenzo's face he seemed to guess a bit of her natural wanderlust.'Have you met anyone up here?' he asked. 'Made friends?' 'A few people down in Troina.' 'That's something, I suppose. What do you do for fun up here?'Emma shrugged. 'Walk. Swim. Read. I'm easily entertained, fortunately.''Yes.' He gazed out at the mountains and Emma had the sense he was thinking about something else, something painful.'But it's not the kind of job you'd stay in for ever,' he said at last.'Are you trying to get rid of me?' she asked lightly. She'd meant it as a joke but Larenzo took the question seriously.'No, definitely not. But if something were to happen…' He trailed off, his gaze still on the hills, and Emma set down her wine glass.'Larenzo, are you thinking of selling this place?''Not selling it, no.''But something,' she pressed. 'What's going on, really? Do I need to start looking for another job?'He let out a long, low breath and raked his hands through his hair. 'Whatever happens, I'll make sure to give you a good reference.''What are you talking about, whatever happens?' Emma shook her head. 'I don't understand you.''I know, and I don't want to explain it now. It will all become clear soon enough.' He nodded towards the pool. 'How about a swim?''A swim?' Emma glanced at the pool, the water glimmering in the moonlight. 'It's a bit cold for me.''Not for me,' he said, and she watched in amazement as he stripped off his shirt and jeans and, clad only in his boxer shorts, dived into the pool. The splash echoed through the still air and Emma watched, shivering slightly, as Larenzo swam the length of the pool before surfacing and slicking back the wet hair from his face.'Come in,' he called. 'The water's lovely.'Emma shook her head. 'I only just turned the heating on. It's got to be freezing.''Even so.' He arched an eyebrow, his mouth curling in a smile that was pure temptation. Emma's gaze was inexorably drawn to his bare chest, all lean, rippling muscle, his bronzed skin beaded with water. 'Dare you.'Emma hadn't thought this evening could get any more surreal. But swimming with her boss in a freezing pool?'Come on, Emma.' He held out his hand. 'Just jump in.' Heat simmered in his eyes and she felt an answering stab of lust through her middle. This was so foolish, so dangerous, and yet…the sight of Larenzo in the pool, nearly naked with moonlight streaming over his body and droplets of water twinkling like diamonds on his bronzed skin, was hard to resist. And already this evening felt separate from reality, a time apart.'Chicken?' he taunted, his eyes and teeth glinting in the darkness, and Emma laughed.'You really want to get me in that pool.''I want someone to swim with.'Excitement licked through her veins. She didn't think Larenzo was coming on to her; he never had before. And yet.'Fine,' she said, and, shrugging off her sweater, she dived fully clothed into the deep end.She surfaced, sucking in a hard breath, because the water really was cold. 'And now I'm getting out,' she told him as she trod water. 'It's as freezing as I thought it would be.''I didn't think you'd do it,' he said, laughter threading his voice, and Emma was glad that she'd managed to distract him from whatever had been bothering him, even if she got hypothermia in the process.'You thought wrong,' she said, and swam towards the edge of the pool. With her wet clothes weighing her down it was hard to haul herself up on the pool's edge. And then she felt Larenzo behind her, his hands on her shoulders, the strength and heat of him just inches from her back. She sucked in a shocked breath as he slid his hands to her waist and helped her up.

After much interrogation Emma leaves and runs to her friend in New York where she finds out she if pregnant . A little more than a year later Larenzo shows up at her door. When he finds he has a daughter he wants her as part of his life but so many dark shadows envelope him and happiness seems something he can never have. The book is such a wonderful story that I will not give away any more of it. Find out why Larenzo was put in prison and how it all turns out, a wonderful book.

Of late I have gobbled up a few of Kate Hewitt's novels and you can bet I'll be reading more.In 'Larenzo's Christmas Baby' our hero, Larenzo Cavelli, is a gorgeous, single businessman who is a playboy extraordinaire. It seems he has a different beauty on his arm (and in his bed) every week.Emma is our heroine and she's Larenzo's housekeeper at his mountain home. She has rarely seen him but a handful of times and he always gives her notice when he’s arriving so she can have the house prepared just as he likes it. Emma is shocked and surprised when she hears someone enter the house. Larenzo was a day early. She immediately knew something was wrong as he looked disheveled and very sad, reflective. They spent the evening together and when neither could sleep they found comfort in each other’s arms. A few hours later the police arrived to arrest Larenzo and said they had enough evidence to connect him to the mob and he would spend the rest of his life in prison.A year and a half later he was exonerated and set free. First on his to do list was to find Emma. The surprise was on him when he went to see her and heard a baby crying upstairs as she was quickly trying to get him out the door. Funny thing...that baby looked exactly like him...down to the dimpled chin. Lucy...you got some slainin’ to do!!Both of these characters had a rough past. Neither felt wanted as a child/teen. They each had a lot to work through before they could work on them as a couple.***As a side note there was no cheating or womanizing in this book. Larenzo was introduced as a playboy but that happened prior to the beginning of the book. I was so glad about that.I highly recommend this book. I enjoyed every moment of it and struggled to put it down long enough to let the dog out the back door.
