Without our domesticated plants and animals, human civilization as we know it would not exist.

We would still be living at subsistence level as hunter-gatherers if not for domestication. It is no accident that the cradle of civilization―the Middle East―is where sheep, goats, pigs, cattle, and cats commenced their fatefully intimate association with humans.

Before the agricultural revolution, there were perhaps 10 million humans on earth. Now there are more than 7 billion of us. Our domesticated species have also thrived, in stark contrast to their wild ancestors. In a human-constructed environment―or man-made world―it pays to be domesticated.

Domestication is an evolutionary process first and foremost. What most distinguishes domesticated animals from their wild ancestors are genetic alterations resulting in tameness, the capacity to tolerate close human proximity. But selection for tameness often results in a host of seemingly unrelated by-products, including floppy ears, skeletal alterations, reduced aggression, increased sociality, and reduced brain size. It's a package deal known as the domestication syndrome.

Elements of the domestication syndrome can be found in every domesticated species―not only cats, dogs, pigs, sheep, cattle, and horses but also more recent human creations, such as domesticated camels, reindeer, and laboratory rats. That domestication results in this suite of changes in such a wide variety of mammals is a fascinating evolutionary story, one that sheds much light on the evolutionary process in general.

We humans, too, show signs of the domestication syndrome, which some believe was key to our evolutionary success. By this view, human evolution parallels the evolution of dogs from wolves, in particular.

A natural storyteller, Richard C. Francis weaves history, archaeology, and anthropology to create a fascinating narrative while seamlessly integrating the most cutting-edge ideas in twenty-first-century biology, from genomics to evo-devo.

How we animals domesticated each other By Matt Young Sorry if this is too long - it is the text of a review I posted on The Panda's Thumb.A number of years ago, I found a family of raccoons living in my chimney.* I got them out by dropping a trouble light down the flue and turning it on for a few days. According to Richard C. Francis, in his splendid book, Domesticated, animals such as raccoons living in urbanized areas represent the first step toward domesticating those animals. The full title of the book is Domesticated: Evolution in a Man-Made World, and Francis shows in considerable detail how various animals became domesticated: dogs, cats, pigs, sheep and goats, reindeer, camels, horses, rodents, and perhaps humans, as well as other predators such as raccoons and ferrets. Each scenario is slightly different, each seems well documented, and each has just a little bit of just-so story in it.The audience for the book is not completely clear. I think the author thinks that the book is written for the lay reader, but at times it got a little hairy, and I recommend that, if you are not a biologist, you keep your computer nearby. Or, if you are younger than I, your smart phone. Indeed, after getting through 50 or so pages of the complimentary copy I received, I bought a Kindle edition, precisely so that I could more easily look up terms that were unfamiliar or not entirely familiar. Lest this paragraph be taken as a criticism, let me make clear that the effort was wholly worthwhile.Francis begins with the now well known domestication of foxes by Dmitry Belyaev in Siberia. Belyaev and his colleagues selected foxes, as Francis puts it, “for one trait and one trait only: the capacity to tolerate human proximity without fear or aggression.” In approximately 50 years, they bred foxes that were as tame as many dogs. But there were concomitant physical changes: hair became mottled or piebald, ears flopped, tails curled, snout and limbs shortened, and face broadened, for example. Additionally, brain volume and sexual dimorphism were reduced. Many of the same physical changes may be seen in domesticated dogs, cats, horses, cattle – and all are a direct result of selection for tameness. Such by-products are a general feature of evolution and are a form of convergent evolution resulting from various homologies that more or less guarantee that all domesticated mammals will evolve similar traits. The raccoons in my chimney are probably already self-selected for tolerance of human beings. Wolves probably self-selected in roughly the same way: perhaps they began to domesticate themselves by feeding on scraps left by early humans, as the raccoons occasionally feed on my garbage. Wolves in different geographical areas evolved into landraces, sort of proto-breeds that eventually developed into what we know as breeds.I was surprised to learn that the concept of breed is only a century or so old. British kennel clubs, beginning in the 1870’s, hyper-selected for various traits, such as the snout of a bulldog. Francis says that they routinely mated a champion male with his own female offspring and remarks somewhat archly that the Victorian aristocrats ultimately responsible for such incestuous relationships may have been desensitized as a result of their own pedigrees. Besides causing inbreeding, such selection also caused serious physical and genetic defects in virtually all purebred dogs. Not to mention that thoroughbred horses, which Francis deals with in a later chapter, are at an evolutionary dead end: they are infertile, and their speed has not improved in 50 years. There are no master races; they need to be mongrelized.Cats also enjoyed a commensal relationship with humans, probably after the mouse was introduced into the wild cats’ region. Although humans consider cats somewhat standoffish, Francis notes that feral housecats remain far more tame and far more gregarious than their wild ancestors. Like dogs, cats have been bred to have various skeletal deformities, a practice that Francis considers “unconscionable.”Pigs may have been domesticated similarly to dogs, but it is also possible that pigs, cattle, sheep, goats, and horses were domesticated by “human management of wild populations,” wherein wild animals were first herded, then bred. Cows, in particular, descend from the wild aurochs, a large, fierce beast that Caesar compared, with some hyperbole, to elephants. Regarding the aurochs’s ferocity, Francis writes, "[N]o matter how tame these early domesticates were, by auroch[s] standards, you would still need to be a lot braver than a bull leaper to push their calves aside and pull on their teats." (What’s not to like about a book that regularly comes up with quips like these?)Francis seems to have forgotten, however, that elephants have been domesticated, and he writes that the aurochs is the largest domesticated animal. Oddly, he thinks (incorrectly) that the singular of aurochs is auroch. In fact, the singular is aurochs; the word is cognate with ox (think ur-ox). It is odd that the copy editor did not catch this mistake, because the book seems to be generally well prepared (we will not, however, discuss the use of grizzly where grisly was meant).Sheep and goats (Francis prefers goats), reindeer, camels, horses, rodents: Francis covers them all, often beginning a chapter with a curious anecdote. Horses, for example, were originally domesticated for their meat; only later, after other meat sources were available, was the horse used for transportation and warfare. The horse’s status has risen so sharply that most Europeans and their cultural descendants “would be about as aghast at the thought of eating horse meat as they would dog meat.”Francis devotes 2 chapters to the question whether humans domesticated themselves. The argument is long, and I am afraid you will have to read it for yourself, but it depends in part on the argument that humans, like other domesticated animals, are neotenous, that is, the adult animal retains juvenile features, such as big eyes. I got slightly bogged down in one chapter by the profusion of terms like hominid, hominin, hominine, and hominoid (which I think of as homonym-oids). The second of these chapters asks whether human hypersociality came as the result of self-domestication by way of natural selection for tameness. Answer: “It ain’t necessarily so”; Francis wants more evidence. The final chapter, except for an epilogue, is called “The Anthropocene” and asks how an utterly obscure, bipedal, nearly hairless ape could in a mere few hundred thousand years come to dominate the planet and indeed be responsible for the most recent mass extinction. I cannot go into detail here, but I am left with the feeling that it was mostly “cultural evolution,” with biological evolution following thereafter – as when herdsmen begin to use dairy products (cultural evolution) and only thereafter does an allele for lactose tolerance predominate (biological evolution).______Appendix 1. I resolved not to read the appendixes; generally I do not like appendixes or endnotes* and think that a topic should be incorporated into the book if it is important enough and dropped if it is not (excluding very abstruse derivations and whatnot). Nevertheless, I began to read the appendixes and was treated to a discussion of the need for a new synthesis that gets away from the gene-centered view popularized by Richard Dawkins, a serious and hard-hitting critique of evolutionary psychology, and also some boring stuff.Appendix 2. As one of the self-appointed guardians of the modern metric system, I disliked the book’s use of “mya” for “million years ago”; if anything, the usage should have been “Mya.” But that is not really satisfactory either, because “y” and “a,” though not SI symbols, are both commonly used as a symbol for “year.” I probably would have used “Ma” for “megannus,” since “year” is Anglocentric. In addition, when he means tens or hundreds of thousands of years, the author uses “BP,” presumably meaning “before present,” which is arguably OK, but not consistent with the previous usage. At least once, he used “CE,” which is perhaps more useful than “BP” when we are discussing more or less historical times, but again is inconsistent.______* My son also had a raccoon in his chimney; unfortunately, his died there, with unfortunate consequences involving maggots. I really did not want to tell you that, but I wanted to make a point about the endnotes. The book has a significant number of endnotes. Many of them simply cite a reference, but others have content. I find it very distracting to have to stop my reading and go to an endnote. Part of the art of writing is culling: if something was worth telling, the author should have worked it into the text or, otherwise, killed it.

And I have to say that I enjoyed the book more than I thought I would. There was potential for author Richard Francis to get bogged down in the minutiae of the science. But he didn’t. The book was fun to read and Francis has a sharp sense of humor. His personal anecdotes are interesting especially the one about the camel which was downright hilarious. The science was easy to digest. Interestingly, Francis editorializes about breeding which helped me to get to know him a little. I recommend this book for anyone interested in biology or evolution or anyone specifically interested in breeding and domestication.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Domestication is an evolutionary force, says Francis, and makes a solid case for it. By lyndonbrecht This is a very good book, but be aware that it is grounded in fairly difficult genetic concepts--I got his basic points but some of the material is beyond my science knowledge, so I'm planning a reread. I read it in chunks over a week (I usually read a book straight through) and found myself chewing over the ideas as I went to sleep. The basic theme of the book is that domestication by humans has become an evolutionary force shaping the animals we have domesticated. But it is more that that; the last part of the book is on domestication of ourselves, essentially, and while difficult to summarize, it's convincing.Francis starts with chapters on specific domesticates. These are written clearly, are fascinating in details and written with verve and wit. The chapters discuss dogs, cats, sheep and goats, reindeer, camels (short but fascinating and funny as well), cattle, horses, rodents (guinea pigs!). The only conspicuously missing domesticates are the birds--chickens, geese, ducks and so on. These chapters discuss the likely circumstances of domestication as well as changes in the animals over the thousands of years of domestication. These also involve a considerable discussion of epigenetics and plasticity of form. I found the most fascinating chapters to be on cats, reindeer and horses. There's lots of unexpected detail. I had not thought that there was much less genetic distance between a Pekingese and a wolf than between a wolf and a coyote. There's also the matter that we amazingly complex humans have about the same number of genes as a puffer fish. Francis does have one axe to grind; as he considers the changes in dogs' forms he condemns breeders and kennel clubs that perpetrate harmful anatomical features such as pushed in faces and very short legs, or such forms in other animals as twisty rats. One note on appendixes: they skip numbers. The reason for this is that each appendix is numbered the same as the chapter it pertains to and not all chapters have an appendix (they appear at the end of the main text). Read them all, though. There are a number of useful tables, some complex. There are some illustrations, but I wish the book had more.

Caveat Lector. This is the third major tome on Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy to appear in the last few years. I have seen Orazem's book, but not Barsoukov's. Orazem's book has a lot more white space; Lvovich's has more examples. If the reader just wants to learn the math, either book will work, and Orazem's will be easier on the eyes. However, if one wants to see how well EIS works in solving real-world problems, Lvovich's book has more citations and examples. Lvovich's experience at teaching at the Yeager Center at Case Western Reserve University shows. Use Orazem if interested mainly in theory, Lvovich if more interested in materials characterization.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Extremely Useful Reference By Matt Smiechowski This book can serve as a broad introduction to impedance spectroscopy for researchers who are not as familiar with the technique, as well as a detailed reference for experts who are seeking a better understanding of their test results. Starting with a review of the basic mathematics, the text builds on this foundation with discussions of practical applications and real-world examples. This progression guides the reader to understanding how the theory can be employed in both test design and data interpretation. The focus on applying the theory to experimental analysis makes this an excellent hands-on EIS reference.

Review of Catalysis by Gadi Rothenberg By Reviewer #1 This 279-page book, "Catalysis" by Prof. Gadi Rothenberg is an interesting perspective to catalysis chemistry. That is, it stems from contemporary concepts that have acquired international relevance, namely, "Green and Sustainable." There are a total of six chapters. starting with what green chemistry is, and what sustainable methods are. Chapter 2 addresses the fundamentals of catalysis including energy diagrams as well as basic kinetics. Chapter 3 discusses homogenous catalysis by both metals as well as organocatalysis, and the concept of catalyst recovery and recycling, which is critical to greener and conservative catalytic processes. Chapter 4 is on heterogeneous catalysis, which is has more of a materials chemistry and process perspective. This chapter also includes a section on the use of ionic liquids that is currently in vogue. Chapter 5 involves biocatalysis such as those by enzymes, catalytic antibodies, RNA, and other biologically-derived agents. The final chapter, number 6, deals with the applications of computers to catalysis chemistry (an area which this reader cannot offer meaningful comments on).Generally, the book is written in a manner that is easy to follow. It has good illustrations and many in color. There are no apparent errors in the descriptions or illustrations. Each chapter has its own set of references and end-of-chapter problems (this reader assumes that the solutions may be available to bona fide instructors). From the standpoint of usage. This book could serve either as a course text for a special topics on green and sustainable catalysis methods, or a part of the text would be usable in a more general catalysis course. Clearly, the book is a valuable addition to any institutional library. If the author plans any future editions, possible additions could be catalysis chemistry using renewable resources and catalytic processes using continuous flow. This will make the book much broader in its coverage and perhaps expand the readership. In general, a very good book.Mahesh LakshmanDepartment of ChemistryThe City College and The City University of New York

It emphasizes two important and previously neglected topics in textbooks on catalysis, namely the "green" aspects of this key element of chemistry; and the emerging role of computational chemistry in the rational design and in the mechanistic understanding of catalytic processes (Chapter 6). The textbook leads the scholar gradually from basic concepts of green chemistry, through basic concepts in catalysis and surface science, emphasizes - and rightly so - heterogeneous processes, and provides ample examples from currently practiced industrial catalytic processes. Yet another unique feature of the book is its unified vision of the whole field in its most general definition: Experiments and theory, biocatalytic processes and classical catalytic processes, all emerge as one comprehensive field. The full referencing, which includes also the titles of the papers, is a blessing, and serves as an invaluable additional source of information. The web site which accompanies the book ([...]) is a treasure-place by itself with plenty of useful features, such as lecture slides which accompany each chapter, and plenty of exercises. This is a "must" book for teachers and for anyone who wishes to get a modern overview of catalysis.Prof. David AvnirInstitute of ChemistryThe Hebrew University of JerusalemMay 30th, 2008

A great book to have for teaching and as a research reference By NN Catalysis, by Gadi Rothenberg, is a book I strongly recommend to people who are teaching graduate level courses as well as research scientists who are interested in expanding their knowledge in any aspect of catalysis. It is written in such a manner as to ease the reader into complex areas of research by clarifying and revisiting fundamentals of the topics discussed. It is an ideal book for both upper undergraduate education as well as early graduate level courses. It also has questions at the back of every chapter. This book is written with the concept of Green Chemistry in mind, which makes it a desirable book to have as an inspiration for modern day demands in research. A notable and unique strength of this book resides in its ability to integrate various aspects of catalysis such as: homogeneous, heterogeneous, inorganic, organic, bioorganic, biochemical and even the involvement of computational applications, in an effective manner. The figures and diagrams used along with the analogies employed in the description make this book a true pleasure to read. The accompanying website is also a great tool to aid in lecturing as well as for direct links to the scientific literature.Nasri Nesnas, Ph.D.Department of ChemistryFlorida Institute of TechnologyMelbourne, Florida, USA

A complete guide to using the best ingredients and minimal equipment to create fun and flavorful brews

Ancient societies brewed flavorful and healing meads, ales, and wines for millennia using only intuition, storytelling, and knowledge passed down through generations―no fancy, expensive equipment or degrees in chemistry needed. In Make Mead Like a Viking, homesteader, fermentation enthusiast, and self-described “Appalachian Yeti Viking” Jereme Zimmerman summons the bryggjemann of the ancient Norse to demonstrate how homebrewing mead―arguably the world’s oldest fermented alcoholic beverage―can be not only uncomplicated but fun.  Armed with wild-yeast-bearing totem sticks, readers will learn techniques for brewing sweet, semi-sweet, and dry meads, melomels (fruit meads), metheglins (spiced meads), Ethiopian t’ej, flower and herbal meads, braggots, honey beers, country wines, and even Viking grog, opening the Mead Hall doors to further experimentation in fermentation and flavor. In addition, aspiring Vikings will explore: •    The importance of local and unpasteurized honey for both flavor and health benefits; •    Why modern homebrewing practices, materials, and chemicals work but aren’t necessary; •    How to grow and harvest herbs and collect wild botanicals for use in healing, nutritious, and magical meads, beers, and wines; •    Hops’ recent monopoly as a primary brewing ingredient and how to use botanicals other than hops for flavoring and preserving mead, ancient ales, and gruits;  •    The rituals, mysticism, and communion with nature that were integral components of ancient brewing and can be for modern homebrewers, as well; •    Recommendations for starting a mead circle to share your wild meads with other brewers as part of the growing mead-movement subculture; and more!  Whether you’ve been intimidated by modern homebrewing’s cost or seeming complexity in the past―and its focus on the use of unnatural chemicals―or are boldly looking to expand your current brewing and fermentation practices, Zimmerman’s welcoming style and spirit will usher you into exciting new territory. Grounded in history and mythology, but―like Odin’s ever-seeking eye―focusing continually on the future of self-sufficient food culture, Make Mead Like a Viking is a practical and entertaining guide for the ages.

Make Mead Like a Viking: Traditional Techniques for Brewing Natural, Wild-Fermented, Honey-Based Wines and Beers, by Jereme Zimmerman

Review

Library Journal-

"Zimmerman originally documented his brewing experiments on his blog, jereme-zimmerman.com. After enthusiastic feedback from participants in the author’s mead workshops, he decided to publish a handbook on making mead with wild yeast, a practice at which the Vikings excelled. His recipes are straightforward and easy to follow, frequently including a story or tips to improve it. They often call for not only standard mead but also an unusual ingredient such as mushrooms, garlic, horehound, or marshmallow plant. Zimmerman packs this slim tome with honey-based brewing recipes, Viking mythology, Viking cultural history (as it applies to mead), a history of beekeeping, a guide to picking honey, how to drink mead, and equipment advice. While there are many mead-making titles on the market, the emphasis on wild yeast along with Zimmerman’s philosophy of experimentation and self-sufficiency make this a unique offering. VERDICT: Adventurous mead makers or brewers who want to move beyond the basics will find plenty to savor here.”

Booklist-

"After an exhausting day raiding coastlines and terrorizing natives, Vikings loved to relax with a nice quaff of mead. Over the centuries, mead retreated to merely a historical curiosity. But thanks to creative and adventuresome home brewers such as Zimmerman, mead has roared back to life. Zimmerman promotes natural fermentation from airborne yeasts, but for those lacking bold Viking genes, he offers advice on fermentation from commercial yeasts. Text is clear and very encouraging, and he makes mead accessible to both tyros and experienced brewers. Summarizing relevant equipment and ingredients, Zimmerman emphasizes that his disciples will produce their best meads if they don’t go overboard on sterilizing their equipment nor take all the joy out of mead making. Recipes go beyond basic mead to include Ethiopian t’ej, fruit-enhanced melomel, and metheglin, which scents mead with herbs and spices. A valuable addition to any collection that seeks to satisfy the creativity of home brewers.”

“A great guide to mead making, full of practical information and fascinating lore.”--Sandor Ellix Katz, author of The Art of Fermentation and Wild Fermentation

“This is a fun book―and fortunately, it doesn’t stop there. Coupled with the fun parts is a book that is informative and detailed in everything from choosing honey all the way to what kinds of corks to use. As a beekeeper who has always had lots of good raw honey on hand, I have made mead before but only in the kind of sterile environment that Jereme Zimmerman eschews. His book opened my eyes to the possibility of returning to the much more natural and time-honored ways of brewing this fascinating beverage.”--Jeffrey Hamelman, director, King Arthur Flour Bakery; author of Bread: A Baker’s Book of Techniques and Recipes

“Tradition meets modernity in this marvelous look at the ancient brewing of honey-based beverages.”--Mike Faul, owner and brewmaster, Rabbit’s Foot Meadery

“I really delighted in this inspired and informative read. Throw caution into the mead-making wind and relish the challenge of some of the more unusual flavorings and ingredients. I now feel more like being a Viking mead maker than ever, and coming from a Celt and fourth-generation mead maker that is something! Enjoy mead and make merry men and maidens.”--Sophia Fenton, director, Cornish Mead Co. Ltd.

“Jereme Zimmerman has captured the wild spirit of mead quite literally―as the quintessential naturally fermented beverage of humankind from the beginning, which reached its apotheosis with the Vikings. Without compromising its mysterious allure, he brings it down to earth for all to make and enjoy.”--Patrick E. McGovern, author of Ancient Wine and Uncorking the Past

“Make Mead Like a Viking puts the ME back in mead: my Scandinavian heritage simply sang when reliving the history, reading the recipes, and playing the drinking games he includes. And best yet . . . Zimmerman encourages mead makers to keep their own bees! There’s no better way to get the best honey there is than when you, and the bees you care for, make it happen together. For me, this is the perfect marriage.”--Kim Flottum, editor-in-chief, Bee Culture: The Magazine of American Beekeeping

Kniskern I was lucky enough to meet the author and now have a signed copy of this fine book.Mr. Zimmerman recalls the REALLY olden days of wild fermentation in this light-hearted look at Viking honey-mead making. The historical notes while extensive, do not overpower the information in this book. And this is an easy to follow guide to get started making your own meads and enjoying the huge varieties of tastes that can be made simply. What would have been nice, is to include this book in a package, with a large crock, carboy, and airlock, so that you could get started right away. You see, mead takes time. At a minimum, 3 weeks to get a young mead ready to drink. At maximum, years! So the sooner you can start brewing up your first batch, the better! This was a quick read, and the writing of Mr. Zimmerman is excellent. My only complaint is trying to pronounce the Viking words!

By Momster I came at this book as a former home winemaker, with all the sanitizing fuss and bother that goes with that. The idea that you could clean but not have to sanitize equipment and still get drinkable, quality products that wouldn't kill you was a whack across the head for me. But the more I read, the more the author's playful, what-the-heck experimental attitude appealed to me. He's made me want to dig out my carboys and airlocks and start wildly throwing things in to see what happens. I've even looked up a couple of local honey producers. In addition to his playfulness, Zimmerman's passion for all things Viking shines through in this book. He gives a good grounding in Norse mythology and culture, the history of and changes in mead making, and information on a wealth of variants that fall broadly under the "mead" category (even some on beers). Also, he's included recipes he's used and developed--although perhaps it would be better to call them guidelines, since he freely recommends departing from them at your whim. The concept and information on wild fermenting is, I think, worth the cost of the book all by itself. It had never occurred to me (why, I do not know) that yeasts abounded all around me and would be happy to leap into my primary fermenter and start having bubble-making parties. Nor had it occurred to me that the pellicle (a barrier layer) formed by top-fermenting yeasts had a protective function; I always thought it meant "batch spoiled; throw it out" (but then, I was making wine, not beer, and top-fermenting yeasts are important in beer). It's eminently sensible; nobody in neolithic times had packets of yeast, for pity's sake, but they certainly had fermented beverages.I suspect this will become a favorite gateway book for those wanting to try out mead making or take a less intimidating pathway into the world of home brewing. It's an easy, enjoyable, and absorbing read, one that takes frugality, sustainability, and responsibility seriously, and one with enough depth that you'll keep going back to it.

I've be By Amazon Customer I have to thank you for this book! I just began my foray into cider and mead this year (from mostly vegetable lacto-fermenting) and the timing was perfect. I've been hanging around the home-brew shop, asking questions. I've been sifting through online discussions, trying to find the right type of advice for me and how I relate to microorganisms. The beer and wine world seems impossibly technical and out of reach to me, being SO exact is no fun (for me). Sandor Katz is a favorite resource, but can be a bit unspecific sometimes. I had read an article you wrote about mead already and it had struck a cord, then I saw the new book and had to get it. It is AWESOME! You have written an excellent guide, and completely illuminated the process. I am so informed and inspired by the book, and feel the confidence to wander and experiment (I now have happily bubbling containers all over my kitchen.) You have managed to take a very complex subject and make it fun and accessible. Thank you!

About the Author Gilbert Keith Chesterton (1874-1936) was one of the most influential English writers of the 20th century. His prolific and diverse output included journalism, philosophy, poetry, biography, Christian apologetics, fantasy and detective fiction. Chesterton has been called the "prince of paradox". Time magazine, in a review of a biography of Chesterton, observed of his writing style: "Whenever possible Chesterton made his points with popular sayings, proverbs, allegories-first carefully turning them inside out." For example, Chesterton wrote the following: Thieves respect property. They merely wish the property to become their property that they may more perfectly respect it. Chesterton is well known for his reasoned apologetics and even those who disagree with him have recognized the universal appeal of such works as Orthodoxy and The Everlasting Man. Chesterton, as a political thinker, cast aspersions on both liberalism and conservatism, saying: The whole modern world has divided itself into Conservatives and Progressives. The business of Progressives is to go on making mistakes. The business of the Conservatives is to prevent the mistakes from being corrected. Chesterton routinely referred to himself as an "orthodox" Christian, and came to identify such a position with Catholicism more and more, eventually converting to Roman Catholicism. Chesterton but it should be considered one of his true gems. His essays here are excellent. Not only does Chesterton offer his usual insight and fine style but the great writer's humor in often on center stage with funny pieces like "The Nightmare" and "The Telegraph Poles." With almost 40 essays here, the reader gets to see Chesterton at his versatile best. Highly recommended.

22 Fantastical Facts About Dolphins, by Justin Gregg

From the Author This book is a lovingly curated collection of weird, unexpected, and remarkable bits of dolphin science trivia. I've assembled twenty-two of my favorite dolphin-science facts, many of which I regularly break out at parties to get people talking about the zany world of dolphin science. Luckily, there's no shortage of dolphin factoids to draw on since we're learning new things about dolphins all the time. Researchers are regularly discovering new dolphin abilities, new dolphin behaviors, and sometimes even new dolphin body parts. I've sorted these fantastical dolphin facts into four categories: 1) Strange Behavior (wherein we learn that dolphins do some pretty weird things), 2) Impressive Skills (wherein we learn that dolphins have unexpectedly awesome abilities), 3) Bizarre Anatomy (wherein we learn that dolphins' bodies can be very, very odd), and 4) Messy Relationships (wherein we learn that dolphins have complicated social lives). If there's one thing I have learned having spent years studying dolphins, it's that every time science uncovers a strange new dolphin ability or behavior, dolphins somehow become more mysterious and even more fascinating. I expect that you'll feel the same way after reading this book. Happy reading!-Justin

About the Author Justin Gregg, PhD, is a Senior Research Associate with the Dolphin Communication Project, and Adjunct Professor at St. Francis Xavier University. He is the author of Are Dolphins Really Smart?, published by Oxford University Press. He has spent many years studying dolphins around the world and currently lives happily with his family among the wildlife in rural Nova Scotia.

Buck So far I've only read the "Look Inside" information here, but based on what I have read, I know I'm going to love it! A simple, witty, fact filled read! I will be getting this for my niece and nephew b/c it's right up their alley! Of course, I'll update this review once I've read it's entirety, but I couldn't wait to post my two cents because coming across a book that appeases kids to adults, dolphin rookies to dolphin professionals is a rare find!

By Stacy I must admit that I knew next to nothing about dolphins before reading this book, and I have to say that all of the fantastical facts about dolphins discussed by the author were truly fascinating... for example, who knew dolphins can hear each other's thoughts? I wholeheartedly recommend this book to anyone looking for a humor-filled read on the curious behaviors of these enigmatic creatures. Thumbs up!

Excerpt from Confessions of a Book-LoverTo get the best out of books, T am convinced that you must begin to love these perennial friends very early in life. It is the only way to know all their "curves," all those little shadows of expression and small lights. There is a glamour which you never see if you begin to read with a serious intention late in life, when questions of technique and grammar and mere words begin to seem too important. Then you have become too critical to feel through all Fenimore Cooper's verbiage the real lakes and woods, or the wild fervour of romance beneath dear Sir Walter's mat of words.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Sentimental and heart-felt By Enrique Bellevacqua Ignore the one-star review, which fails to appreciate the fact that people CAN feel earnestly and honestly sentimental towards a great book. If one doubts the premise, then one cannot possible understand what follows. I can't blame the reviewer since we're constantly bombarded with dictates from the media that we must scoff at sentimentality as being "trite" or worse, and, armed with such indifference, one cannot be suprised by the angry review. This book is not intended to entertain, but to offer an insight into one man's love of great books and literature. To that extent, it succeeds wonderfully.

I laughed out loud, pondered his impressions, looked up his recommendations and was sad when the book ended. I highlighted and sent book quotes to my goodreads page. In short, I experienced this book, fully. I highly recommend this vintage tome. For the book lover, the educator and the scholar this book will be a favorite.
