What did you have for breakfast? Did you ever stop to think about the people and steps involved with how your banana or cereal got on your plate? Nearly everyone is a part of the global food system, yet few people are aware of how it operates. Kimberly A. Weir starts by evaluating how we are connected with spice farmers, cocoa bean growers, soybean producers, tomato pickers, and tuna fishers not only gives insight into where we fit in the global food chain, but also offers a unique way to understand the aspects and concepts of the global political economy. The book begins by figuring out where readers fit in the global food chain, looking at what affects eating habits and choices, and situating these factors in a global context. From Jicama to Jackfruit provides that insight in abundance.

What could seem less inviting than summer in the desert? For most people, this prospect conjures up the image of relentless heat and parched earth; for biologist John Alcock, summer in Arizona's Sonoran Desert represents an opportunity to investigate the wide variety of life that flourishes in one of the most extreme environments in North America. "Only very special plants and animals can survive and reproduce in a place that may receive as little as six inches of rain in a year," observes Alcock, "a place where the temperature may rise above one hundred degrees each day for months on end." Yet he and other biologists have discovered here startling signs of life hidden in plain view under the summer sun:- male digger bees compete to reach virgins underground during the early summer mating season;- the round-tailed ground squirrel goes about its business, sounding alarm calls when danger threatens its kin;- the big-jawed beetles Dendrobias mandibularis emerge in time to feast on saguaro fruits and to use their mandibles on rival males as well;- Harris's hawks congregate in groups, showing their affinity for polyandry and communal hunting;- robberflies mimic the appearance of the bees and wasps on which they prey;- and peccaries reveal the adaptation of their reproductive cycle to the desert's seasonal rains. The book's 38 chapters introduce readers to these and other desert animals and plants, tracing the course of the season through activities as vibrant as mating rituals and as subtle as the gradual deterioration of a fallen saguaro cactus. Enhanced by the line drawings of Marilyn Hoff Stewart, Sonoran Desert Summer is both an account of how modern biology operates and a celebration of the beauty and diversity that can be found in even the most unpromising places.

Sonoran Desert Summer, by John Alcock

From Publishers Weekly Daytime desert temperatures soar above 100F for months on end, and rainfall may be no more than may be no more than ? six inches a year. How do plants and animals survive in such a hostile climate? When he isn't teaching zoology at Arizona State, Alcock investigates desert life from his study site on Usery Mountain in Tonto National Forest, east of Phoenix. Although his specialty is insect reproductive behavior, he is keenly interested in other life forms and their adaptation to the environment. Alcock shows us a giant saguaro cactus, toppled by wind and slowly devoured by bacteria, insects and their predators; male empress butterflies and digger bees lying in wait for virgin females of each species to emerge from the pupal stage; Harris hawks on cooperative hunts. Among the mammals discussed are the woodrat, peccary, rock squirrel and coyote; Alcock notes that in 1987, the government spent $300,000 to destroy coyotes that had killed $54,000 worth of ok? domestic animals. This sequel to Sonoran Spring is a superb piece of natural history writing. Illustrated . First serial to Wilderness magazine. Copyright 1990 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal Evolutionary biologist Alcock highlights the unique plants and animals that thrive in the Sonoran desert of Southern Arizona and Northwestern Mexcio. Using both his own observations and that of other biologists, Alcock shows some of the delights of observing nature at its most ingenious. His essays are lively and interesting--not too technical and not overly simplified. The illustrations are attractive and bring into focus details otherwise easy to miss. A good purchase in the nature writing category.- Katherine Galloway Garstka, Intergraph Corp., Huntsville, Ala.Copyright 1990 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Review "A handsome, thoughtful record of nature observation and conceptual ecology in a very hard place to live."—New York Times "A superb piece of natural history writing."—Publishers Weekly "An eminently accessible piece of natural history."—Booklist "We might mistake it for merely a sweet book of observations by a man who studies wasps and butterflies in the desert of central Arizona. It is that, but not merely that. John Alcock is an ecologist with a patient eye, a broad curiosity and a head full of well-honed questions, and this is his rumination about the way the world works. . . . The real charm of Mr. Alcock's book is that, while he tells us such cerebral things, he also shows us that scientific cognition isn't the only way to experience a glorious ecosystem."—David Quammen, New York Times Book Review "Alcock captures the wonder and the science behind the lives of wood-boring beetles, zebra-tailed lizards, round-tailed ground squirrels, elk owls and saguaro caccti, among other species, during both the desert summers: sizzling, cloudless dry days of May and June, and the intermittent thunderstorms and downpours of the late summer monsoon season."—High Country News "For anyone who has the slightest interest in the desert and its creatures, opening Alcock's book is like opening your eyes in the morning."—Arizona Daily Star "The reader gets the sensation of traveling with the author through this landscape, at times learning from the professor and at other times sitting back and enjoying a beautiful place. It's a delightful mix."—Naturalist Review "Thought-provoking and instructive and by no means lacking in appreciation of the beauties of nature . . . sound scientific natural history writing at its best."—Journal of Arid Environments

Reader's review of Sonoran Desert Summer by John Alcock By david e. brown Sonoran Desert Summer is another of John Alcock's easy to read introductions to this desert's more fascinating creatures. The reader not only gets to experience the desert inhabitants' comings and goings during a typical summer in the Sonoran Desert, he or she does it in comfort! As informative as it is entertaining, this book gives the reader valuable insights into the wonderful adaptations of some of the desert's most interesting plants and animals. Written by a biologist who can also write, this book is fun to read, easy to digest, and makes every jaunt into the desert just that much more meaningful. And, the illustrations are charming as well. All in all, a good buy whether you are a tourist or a long-time desert rat.

4 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Researched, readable and redolent with value By Stephen A. Haines Taking up an Alcock book and following his desert jaunts is always a pleasure. His enthusiasm for the lands others call "bleak" invites imitation. Whatever view we hold for deserts must be reconsidered and assessed for validity when we close the final page. He shows us life where we perceive an empty terrain. Brief appearances by birds, insects, coyotes, even water catch his eye and are imparted to us. While the variety of life here is as vast as the landscape, one feature is brought into view repeatedly - the giant cactus saguro. This bizarre plant becomes a lodestone for his travels because its condition signals so much about conditions. "Sonoran Desert Summer" sounds intimidating, but Alcock shows how important this season is to life.Reflecting the brief jaunts Alcock takes into the Sonoran, the book is a collection of essays. The topics vary from feather structure for body temperature control through insect, bird and plant reproduction to government policies on coyotes. The wealth of detail neither obscures nor is muted by the desert's vastness - an aspect of which we are reminded on nearly every page. Mountains loom on the horizon and monsoon thunderheads build on their crests, but under this Hackberry bush a small butterfly is playing out a timeless strategy for finding a mate. Alcock misses none of it, and you feel pangs of regret that he's there and you're not. Still, he reminds us, human intrusion on desert solitudes are a destructive force. The Hohokum peoples, who inhabited this area for a duration four times longer than Europeans have inhabited the Western Hemisphere, likely irrigated themselves out of existence.Alcock, true to his role as a teacher, is full of questions. How does the Digger Bee know where to excavate to obtain a mate? Why do phainopeplas, a dark-plumaged, crested bird, nest in solitude in Arizona but in groups in California? Why do "auxiliaries" occur in some bird species? Why does the zebra-tailed lizard wave its tail, an act likely to lure predators? Alcock doesn't whip out the answers to these conundrums, but guides you through a process of examining evidence, talking about other researchers' efforts and provides you with the most likely evolutionary solution. No aspect of a species lacks an evolutionary pathway, he reminds us. We must work it out from our time and place as best we can. What is the worth of these efforts? Do they have meaning for those of us not granted the prize of desert residence? Alcock's assessment of government policies of "pest" removal can be applied anywhere. Coyotes, despised by ranchers as despoilers of herds and by suburbanites as raiders of garbage cans, find themselves targetted for eradication. Alcock shows the short-sightedness of such policies and how to replace them with more realistic ones. Heed his warning. Humanity can't afford to lose desert life - "writing its own epitaph in the sand" along with his favoured saguro. [stephen a. haines - Ottawa, Canada]

Traveling in the west, working as a naturalist at several national parks, as well as on Mount Greylock in Massachusetts, Kathleen O’Rourke encountered large animals and wild weather, park visitors and native peoples. She writes as a storyteller and pulls the reader along into her experiences as a greenhorn ranger who learns to overcome a fear of snakes, mountain lions and bears by talking to them and being curious about their lives. When she was lonely, or needed to learn about a new environment, or maybe just looking for some fun, it was often the other rangers, Indian friends, as well as the locals in small towns that provided meaningful companionship. Kathy’s background as an herbalist, nurse, teacher and outdoor leader adds to her appreciation and fascination with the natural world. She’s written nature columns and articles regularly for several publications over the past 30 years.

Kathy O'Rourke invites us to share her enjoyment of wild places with these wonderfully written stories By Ned Wolf Kathy O'Rourke invites us to share her enjoyment of wild places with these wonderfully written stories. Her longtime appreciation of the natural world grows even deeper with her friendships with Native Americans. In times of hardship, humor, and laughter she shows us how in slowing down we can become more human. She combines a keen sense of the practical with encouragement to stop and describe what we see. While I've read Kathy's writings over the years, this book has delightful surprises.

O'Rourke has traveled deep into the natural landscape, most notably in the American West as a ranger and naturalist. And the self-knowledge and understanding that she has come to in this wild world, is conveyed in a clear voice which is very much her own. Her interactions with and around animals, place, weather, Native Americans, plants and eventually a good deal of the ecosphere come through with wit and brevity. I've read Kathy O'Rourke's newspaper columns for years and it's nice to have her thought and observations brought together in this well illustrated volume.

God Made Every Part of You! It's easy to convey the message to children that their bodies or particular parts of their bodies are shameful. This misconception fuels confusion, embarrassment, and secrecy, and often prevents children from recognizing or reporting sexual abuse.God Made All of Me is a simply-told, beautifully-illustrated story to help families talk about these sensitive issues with two- to eight-year-old children. Because the private parts of our bodies are private, the home is the ideal environment where a child should learn about his or her body and how it should be treated by others.God Made All of Me starts from the fundamental truth that God created everything and applies that truth to kids and their bodies. It equips parents to talk with both boys and girls about their bodies and to help them understand the difference between the appropriate and inappropriate touch of others. God Made All of Me allows families to build a first line of defense against sexual abuse in the safety of their own homes.God Made All of Me is the first children's book written by Rid of My Disgrace authors Justin and Lindsey Holcomb. Parents of young children themselves, the Holcombs regularly counsel victims of sexual abuse and are profoundly aware of the dangers kids face. Their simple and relatable story, designed to help children protect their bodies, will be an important resource for every family with young children.

  • Simple, relatable story for two- to eight-year-old children, designed to help them protect their bodies.
  • Includes colorful, age-appropriate illustrations.
  • Conveys a clear message that God made every part of the human body and that every part is, therefore, good (the doctrine of creation.)
  • Gently opens the conversation about sexual abuse that every family needs to have.

God Made All of Me: A Book to Help Children Protect Their Bodies, by Justin S. Holcomb, Lindsey A. Holcomb

Amazon.com Review

“Talking with our children about their bodies, touches, and secrets is an important step in keeping them as safe as possible. God Made All of Me helps parents start this conversation in a way that is not frightening and that affirms the faith traditions of many families.” —Victor Vieth, Senior Director & Founder, Gundersen National Child Protection Training Center

“God Made All of Me is a helpful tool for parents who want to talk with their children about the wonders of the human body in the context of safe and healthy relationships. With a positive tone and clear illustrations, God Made All of Me offers helpful words and actions for children to keep their bodies safe, and to see themselves as God’s glorious creations.” —Amy Julia Becker, author of Small Talk: Learning from My Children about What Matters Most

“Children are bombarded by all kinds of sexual messages, and parents are in the most critical position to provide the first line of defense to protect and guide their children to develop a positive and clear voice about their body and sexuality. God Made All of Meshows you how to establish the foundation for a healthy bond with your children to meet the increasing challenges of sexuality that they will confront in childhood and adolescence. God Made All of Me establishes the dynamics for an ongoing, open exchange for discussing the body and healthy boundaries, imparting invaluable skills for your children to establish a spiritual compass, trust their feelings, and express their thoughts as they develop.” —John T. Chirban,Professor of Psychology and Chairman of the Human Development Program, Hellenic College; clinical instructor in psychology at Harvard Medical School at The Cambridge Hospital; Senior Fellow at the Center for the Study of World Religions at Harvard University; and author of How to Talk with Your Kids about Sex

“Protecting our children begins with conversations that help them understand how to protect themselves. Unfortunately, many parents simply aren’t equipped to have these often difficult and awkward conversations with their little ones. Tragically, sexual offenders realize this and often target children who have never learned how to protect their bodies. The simplicity of the text and the wonderful illustrations make God Made All of Me the perfect resource for teaching our children this absolutely necessary information. What I love most about this amazing little book is how beautifully it conveys God’s love for little ones by wanting them to be safe. As a former child abuse prosecutor, I have no doubt that God Made All of Me will be a major contribution to making our world a safer place for our precious children.” —Boz Tchividjian, Executive Director, GRACE; Professor of Law; and former prosecutor

“Justin and Lindsey have written a book to help us protect our children from sexual abuse. In clear and simple language it engages the child in the discussion. Woven throughout is the foundational belief that our children have been purposefully created by God and that every aspect of their being was his idea. I highly recommend God Made All of Me to parents of young children. Love them well by educating them about keeping their bodies safe.” —Diane Langberg, PhD, Psychologist

“This is a strange and beautiful book. Strange because it’s so unique: exploring God’s creation with a view to helping children protect themselves in an increasingly at-risk culture. Beautiful because it hits its mark: instilling practical wisdom in a way that teaches without terrifying. The combined experience of the authors makes this a terrific resource for parents as well. As a father of four, I highly recommend it.” —Michael Horton, Professor of Systematic Theology and Apologetics, Westminster Seminary California

“A lively, engaging, and straightforward little book, God Made All of Me is the perfect invitation to start a conversation with children about their bodies, boundaries, and the people in their life that make them feel safe. This book is both God-glorifying and visually stimulating and our homes and churches will be safer and more joyful places because of it.” —Rachel Held Evans, author of blogger and author of Faith Unraveled and Searching for Sunday

“God Made All of Me is a sweet, compelling, brilliantly sensitive invitation to teach your children the beauty of their body and the honor due to being made in the image of God. It offers simple and clear wisdom little ones can grasp about how to protect themselves from inappropriate or unwanted touch. It is the responsibility of every parent and grandparent to address uncomfortable subjects. This glorious resource is an investment in care, protection, and honor. I am grateful I get to read this to all three of my grandchildren.” —Dan B. Allender, Professor of Counseling Psychology and Founding President, The Seattle School of Theology and Psychology; author of The Wounded Heart and Healing the Wounded Heart

“I wish my family had this book when I was a little girl because if they did I wouldn’t have the sexual abuse story I have today. This is an important, straightforward book.” —Mary DeMuth, author of Not Marked: Finding Hope and Healing After Sexual Abuse

“As a parent to a young daughter, I’m already thinking through how to parent well in this area. Too many resources, when I was growing up, made us feel shame because of our bodies, or just simply didn’t talk about it. I’m so thankful and completely indebted to Justin and Lindsey for giving us a resource like this.” —Jefferson Bethke, author of New York Times bestseller Jesus > Religion

“This is a must-read for any parent who wants to help empower their child to be safe from those who hurt little ones.” —Michael Reagan, President, The Reagan Legacy Foundation

“This book is an absolute gift to parents! Finally, there is a quality book that engages children while providing a way for parents to discuss the difficult topic of sexual abuse. This is a vital tool to help parents raise healthy, brave children.” —Lindsey Strickland, former child advocate at Sexual Assault Resource Agency, Charlottesville, VA

“It’s sad that we have to educate our children in self-protection; but it is profoundly necessary. The good news is we can rejoice that we are God’s creation and teach our children to live in that sacred dignity. This book is a great help!” —Gregory O. Brewer, Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Central Florida

“Educating our children about their bodies is one of the most important steps in preventing child abuse. That’s why God Made All of Me is a valuable resource. A simple story with colorful artwork, and theological and practical truth—all packed into one small book. Parents, educators, Sunday school teachers, children’s ministry directors, and many others should pick up a copy today and read it to their young children.” —Deepak Reju, Pastor of Biblical Counseling and Family Ministry, Capitol Hill Baptist Church (Washington, DC); and author of On Guard: Preventing and Responding to Child Abuse at Church and The Pastor and Counseling

From the Author Dear Parent or Caregiver,We wrote God Made All of Me as a tool so you can explain to your children that God made their body. Because private parts are private, there can be lots of questions, curiosity, or shame regarding them. For their protection, children need to know about private parts and understand that God made their body and made it special. We want parents and caregivers to be smarter and better prepared than those who would want to harm the child you love and want to protect. Education is important in prevention against inappropriate sexual behavior or contact. By teaching children about their body and discussing appropriate and inappropriate touch, you are helping them understand their ability to say No to unwanted touch, which will help them if anyone ever tries to hurt or trick them. Please consider taking the time to read this book and talk to your child about it.Thank you,Justin and Lindsey Holcomb

By 121BABY I say this delicately, because this is an important book about a vital topic...in its current state, this is not a book to give your kids.We thought the middle - the parts geared for children - were very well done. But with the beginning and ending aimed at adults, it's not something I felt we could just leave around the house. My kids aren't ready for child abuse statistics, and I would venture not many between 2 and 8 are. The message in the center of the book? YES. Helping a child grasp the number of sexual assaults when they can scarcely do math? NO.This means we have to be purposeful and careful with the content. We have to keep the prying eyes of our 8 year old from seeing things that would cause her to ask questions in front of her 3 year old brother that he certainly couldn't handle. It just makes it awkward and hard to manage, and that's a shame.I wish there was a totally kid friendly version and an adult workbook. I would pay extra for two items, because this is important.I also hope Mr. Holcomb will continue to write and share his heart for this issue. May God bless his ministry!

A wonderful resource to help parents protect their children's innocence By Aaron Armstrong Like all little boys between the ages of two and five, my son is fascinated with his boy parts. At least, I think he’s fascinated, considering how he runs around without his pants on. Maybe he just likes to gross out his sisters. My son’s boy-ness aside, from a very early age, we’ve tried to instil an understanding of the importance of keeping ones parts to oneself. We’ve taught them proper names—sometimes with embarrassing results at family gatherings—and told them that if anyone ever asks them to keep a secret, or touches them in a place they shouldn’t or just makes them uncomfortable (even if it’s in a way they don’t understand), they need to come tell us right away. The sad reality is far too many kids don’t get taught these things. And many will experience some form of sexual abuse within their lifetime. Some stats show that as many as one in five have been or will be abused by the time they turn 18. I know some of them. And Lord willing, my kids will not be counted among them. But many parents don’t know where to start. In our province (think “State,” American friends), our government is trying to meet the need with an updated sex-and-health education curriculum in public schools that, while it has some helpful elements, appears to leave children at greater risk for grooming by a sexual predator than informed about the real risks that exist. This same controversial curriculum has seen many parents—notably those of a Roman Catholic background—protesting, failing to offer an alternative beyond leaving it up to the parents. And it’s in the hands of pro-active parents that I want to put a copy of God Made All of Me by Justin and Lindsey Holcomb. The Holcombs, who’ve already written two exceptional but difficult to read books on sexual abuse and domestic violence, have taken a different approach with this book—they’re giving parents a tool with which to teach their kids about their private parts, consent, and what to do if they need help. Two key points they raise in the book center around removing shame and giving control to children:“God made every part of you and God called every part of your body good. Some parts of your body are for sharing and some parts are not for sharing.…” They write (14). And, “It’s OK to say no because we don’t always want to be touched even if it’s by someone you love. If the person doesn’t listen to you, ask for help right away” (17).What makes these two stand out is how they counteract the lies that creep in through the words and actions of abusers. For a child to feel as though they are in control of their own body—that they have the right to say no to any sort of unwanted affection—is a wonderful gift, and something we’ve strived to instil in our own children. Our middle daughter, for example, hates kisses (unless they’re on the top of her head). So we don’t give her kisses on the cheek, and even when we do give a kiss on the top of her head, it’s only with her consent. With all of our kids, we’ve let them know that they can refuse hugs at any time, and especially because our girls are getting older (one is getting awfully close to being a tween), we’re making sure they know that mom and dad respect their privacy, just as we expect them to respect ours.So in many ways, this book was an encouragement for me that we’re already on the right track—and although sometimes the kids will say things we don’t expect in a restaurant or at a family gathering, I’ll take a bit of embarrassment over them not having any understanding of their body any day.And that brings me to the one concern I have, which isn’t so much with the book itself as its audience. I wonder if, because of the subject matter, and because so many parents seem either afraid to use proper names for body parts with kids, or believe it’s inappropriate for those names to be known, that they’ll overlook the book entirely. Worse, I wonder how many will assume that, because the book itself is illustrated in a wonderfully child-friendly style (Trish Mahoney does wonderful work, by the way), they’ll assume it’s a book for their kids, but not one for the family to actually read and discuss together. In fact, as my wife and I sat down to read it, she initially made this assumption, too. It was only after we started reading that it clicked. So parents just need to be aware: this is really a book for you, a teaching tool to use with your kids. Just don’t make the mistake of filing it next to The Jellybeans or Elephant and Piggie.Regardless, I would highly encourage every parent to make sure a copy of God Made All of Me is in your home. Read it with your spouse. Work on a plan to read and discuss it with your kids. Protect their innocence by giving them wisdom.

By Jacob Young To my knowledge, God Made All Of Me is a singular and unique book: A book written to help children protect themselves from sexual assault and abuse from a distinctly Christian perspective. The Biblical doctrines of creation (God mad all things good) and protection (It’s ok to say no) are written at an accessible level for children to understand appropriate and inappropriate touch. One of the central lines to the book is: "God made every part of your body and God called every part of your body good. Some parts of your body are for sharing and some parts are not for sharing."Children are encouraged to clearly say No when they do not want to be touched. Additionally, the private parts are defined by bathing suit and underwear lines – a helpful starting point that’s easy for kids to understand. Even Grandma gets told No with confidence to illustrate saying No to kisses (unwanted touch), even to family members.Clear language about body parts and names are used, with good justification which the authors explain in the back. The introduction and final remarks aim to equip parents (and all involved with caring for children) with clear facts about sexual abuse and clear, simple steps to help protect their children.God Made All Of Me is timely and helpful. I would recommend all parents have this and read through it with their kids. It may not take precedence over Curious George, but it wasn’t designed to. It’s aimed to equip our children against real threats to their safety, without making them fearful of everybody. The aim is to equip children, not scare them. In this way, it not only uses Christian categories, but illustrates sober Christian grace.

In the brutally competitive world of imaginary news, one fictitious newspaper dares to be so bleeding-edge, so provocative, and so underground that no one has even heard of it until now:The Picayune Intelligencer.

Drawing from flash fiction, The Onion styled satire, and the imaginatively warped worldview of The Far Side, The Picayune Intelligencer collects over thirty hard hitting stories tackling such pressing issues as manspreading, amateur art criticism, the marital problems of superheroes, and many more.

Alexander Kern’s short fiction debut is a humorous foray into the endearing absurdities of human nature, illustrating that sometimes the most outlandish news tells the most realistic truths.

By oldie Alex Kern dares to ask questions on the pressing issues of our time: What if your honor student beat up the school bully? What would you do if you found your teenage son with a Playboy magazine....reading the articles? What if the Homeland Department of Dance condemned your favorite dance? Seriously, this book is very humorous with short stories that point up the funny side of everyday things-both eclectic and cross generational. Great when you need a laugh.

Tired of mortgage and car payments, 30-somethings Andrew and Gwynn sold everything they owned and escaped their humdrum nine-to-five existence for life in paradise - a tiny island accessible only by boat or air in one of the remotest spots on Earth: the Okavango Delta in Botswana. Woefully inexperienced, they took control of a luxury game lodge where the rich and famous went to sip gin and tonics with lions and elephants.

Trouble soon followed. The couple's lives were threatened daily by snakes, elephants, baboons, and a hyena with a plastic fetish. Not to mention the endless - and often insurmountable - challenge of keeping their five-star guests fed in a world where the closest supermarket was an air flight away. Among others, their guests included a famous Hollywood director, some French aristocrats, a Mafia lawyer, world-famous singers, and the England cricket captain. Lighthearted and humorous, Torn Trousers will enthrall you with its unique look at life in wild Africa.

Best 6 hours I have spent in “time-out!” By Roger Stuart Best 6 hours I have spent in “time-out!” After living the past 10 years in the Northwest Suburbs of Chicago, USA; I was nostalgically taken back to the country of my birth, South Africa and the woven tapestry of tribal inter-relationships and superstitious beliefs. The dual authorship provides a unique opportunity for the reader to see both the feminine and masculine perspectives. Gwynn is fiery and witty, while Droon is more practical and hands on. Together they complement each other perfectly. For example Gwynn picks up on the relationships between the different staff members and how Morag pushes those she likes. While Andrew notices all the things around Tau Camp that require fixing but remains oblivious to the relationships going on around him.It is a must read for anyone who intends to go on a Safari in Africa, this book brings to life the culture and behind the scenes life and humour of a game lodge.Lornadee Stuart

At first I wondered about the title, and thought it was rather different, but maybe not in a good way. Then I saw the huge image of the elephant on the cover and landscape and thought why not buy the book? The reviews helped me decide to purchase this great book as it consistently ranked 5-stars. I thought, really, is the book that good?Yes, Torn Trousers is a real page-turner! I loved reading about the villainous woman, Morag who despised Gwyn, but lusted after Andrew. In fact, I looked forward to Gwynn’s paragraphs about her. How courageous of them to have lasted an entire year! Who knew that hippos at night were life-threatening, or elephants could destroy palm trees like paper shredders, or baboons could put the fear of God into a person, as it did Andrew, and guests trapped in their bathroom one fateful night.Instead of the book winding down at the end, I found the threat of the island catching fire caused me to read late - past my bedtime! I sadly felt the grief Gwynn must have experienced over her beloved cat called Woodie when injured by Morag’s territorial tom-cat. How Gwynn managed not to get rid of Morag’s cat sooner, was almost saintly. The owner of the resort, Sean, sounded very interesting (although a tight-wad) as did Sandy and their spoiled broods. I wanted to know more about Sean and Sandy, but perhaps it was wise not to focus on them.If you enjoy reading about adventures I truly recommend this wonderful true African story!Yes, Rra!

Andrew and Gwynn share their amazing experience in one of Southern Africa most remote, and outstanding, areas. It has lovely characters, rich and engaging storytelling, humorous touches spread thorough and even occasional edge-of-your-seat suspense thrown in. I loved it! Considering that most of us won't have similar opportunity, reading their tale is likely the second best thing (after hearing it all straight from the horse's mouth, that is).I mostly had contact with Andrew's writing style from his 4x4 guides and it is rewarding to notice that his talent goes way beyond technical books. Gwynn's writing style is superb! Quite a refreshing read! The book alternates chapters written by either Andrew or Gwynn, showing both perspectives, a pretty nice setup I shall add. This is the kind of book you will have a hard time letting go, in case you can't afford to read it all in one sitting.

PRAISE FOR WENDIGO RISING: "Names to watch in urban fantasy? James Hunter and Yancy Lazarus. Wendigo Rising is another great installment in a thrill-ride of a series." —Craig Schaefer, author of the Daniel Faust series. +++++++ Bigfoot is real. Yancy Lazarus—mage, bluesman, and rambler—knows because there happens to be a nine-foot-tall, walking myth standing in the road, flagging him down. Yancy just can’t escape his reputation as a supernatural Fix-it man even when cruising through the forgotten backwoods of Montana. Turns out Bigfoot has a serious problem on his hands: one of his own has gone rogue, developing a taste for the flesh of humans and Sasquatch alike. A greater Wendigo has risen for the first time in thousands of years and if Yancy can’t stop the creature it could be a slaughter for the residents of a rural Montana town. But even with the monstrous threat looming on the horizon, Yancy has bigger fish to fry. He’s working as an agent of Fate, attempting to put the kibosh on a nefarious scheme, aimed at upsetting the tenuous balance between the supernatural nations. When your boss is Lady Luck, however, nothing is ever left to chance, and his two cases may have more in common than it appears. If he can’t figure out the missing link it could usher in a new world order: an age of inhuman creatures and walking nightmares … one where Yancy Lazarus doesn’t exist.

A fist full of Sasquatch By Rick G One of the many things I like about James A Hunter's excellent Yancy Lazarus series is that the main character is a bit of a drifter. Many series tend to keep their protagonists firmly rooted in one home locale. This isn't a bad thing, mind you, as that familiarity can be built upon until such time as it almost feels like a second home to the reader. However, Hunter takes a different route. Yancy Lazarus's home is his beater of an el camino and the various dive bars he frequents in his constant travels. What this limits in that familiarity I mentioned, it more than makes up for by giving each book a fresh change of pace and a renewed sense of adventure. It's hard not to enjoy an extended road trip looking over the shoulder of a sarcastic wizard with a taste for the blues and enough power to match his attitude.Wendigo Rising is a fun, fast, at times serious, at others absurd, entirely entertaining romp of a story. The titular antagonist and his "People" are realized through an excellent mashup of Native American folklore, the modern concept of Bigfoot, and a healthy dose of imagination from Hunter. The mythology presented in previous chapters is lovingly built upon here and such is Hunter's expertise at its presentation that I was, more than once, forced to Google whether he was drawing from actual research or creating something wholly new to this series. In both instances, it is a job well done.A fun supporting cast of both new and returning characters, strong dialogue, and a breakneck pace round out this adventure. Best yet is that while Wendigo Rising works well as a standalone tale, one can see the roots planted in the previous book - Cold Hearted - beginning to grow and flourish here. I won't spoil anything, but Hunter appears to be building up to something world-rendingly epic.I, for one, can't wait to see where the story goes from here.

The Good, The Bad and The Romance By matt original review @ JC's Book Haven. They might’ve been homeless methheads, but that didn’t give anyone the right to tie ’em up, hold ’em against their will, and treat ’em like animals. Like slaves. Anger reared up inside me like some mean-ass mama bear watching someone mistreat her delinquent, wayward, druggie cubs. Let’s face it, I’m basically a dirt-caked hobo myself, so these were my people. The GoodWhat can I say, Yancy has become one of my top 5 favorite characters to read about. He's rough around the edges and while full of sarcasm he's pretty straightforward in his actions. Plus, he has a knack for fighting the strangest creatures with extreme consequences hanging in the balance. I really love the banter between Yancy and pretty much anyone he tries to hold a conversation with for more than 2 minutes. By the way they talk, you would think him and the chief have known each other for years. The variety of monsters showing up in this series really leaves me hungry for more. Most often it’s just vampires and werewolves and if you're lucky a ghost of some sort. With this series, you'll be eager to turn the page and see what pops up next. One last thing I really love about the series is while it builds upon the last book they never end in crazy cliff hangers. The BadI was left with a question regarding a particular magical item. A certain crown, hopefully in the next book we will get filled in as to what happens to it.The RomanceWell Agent Ferraro is back and that means tension with how their last encounter ended up. Plus should I mention Co-ed hot springs?ConclusionOverall, I loved getting lost in this story. It brings plenty of memories from the first two novels while standing strong on its own. Between the different types of beings showing up and the wild magic items, I love to see new books for this series. I really can't get enough. The world itself has an amazing magical feel and the fact that you can end up anywhere at any given time is fantastic. If you like urban fantasy and haven't started this series, do yourself a favor and start it already.

Spoiler Alert. This one starts with Yancy on the back roads of Montana being stopped by a Bigfoot. Yep. A Bigfoot. This bigfoot and his daughter need Yancy's help. Yancy is on a mission of his own and really doesn't want to stop to help. Of course saying no to a nine foot bigfoot isn't easy and in the end Yancy helps them out.Seems one of the members of the tribe has become a cannibal and a pure white, eyeless Wendigo is now running the show. The show is the complete domination of all those in the tribe and a plan to take over the world. They have no choice because the tiara the Wendigo wears makes him impervious to the Vis and enslaves the tribe. So begins another great read. This one has Yancy, Lady Fate, Chief Chankoowashtay, his daughter Winona, Achac, an Achac who wants war between the people what the Chief calls all bigfoot, and humanity, the little brothers, the man Yancy has been looking for, Dr. Hogg and his plot, homeless people who are caught for experimentation by Hogg, the seven seals, the white seal which is in play, a battle between the Chief, Yance, Winona and the Windigo and his minions, Yancy's "inner man' Cassius Aquinas, the Hub, Yancy's friends FBI Agent Nicole Ferraro, Sheriff Kelly from Lolo Montana who's in league with Hogg, James Sullivan who's Yancy's only true friend on the Guild a Sullivan who's the Lt. Commander of the Fist of the Staff, the Mage special enforcement division. a man Yancy starts to have questions about, the Siren Sisters, Lord Arawn of the hunt and his party, Greg Chandler Yancy's Vietnam war buddy and frequent side kick on missions, a Yancy who carries the seal of war, a battle of giants, Yancy's battle with the Wendigo, betrayal or is it, crows, Morrigan, Ailia and Yancy Lazarus once more in a fight to save humanity and survive.Five Stars.

By Robin Lee This is an excellent collection of Shaun Hupp's short stories, which two, I had already bought and read........I should have looked at the description better........There horrific with blood ,gut and gore everywhere........I liked that you had an introduction, and almost another tale that's being told in between the stories by Emrys, who I think is a, old homeless man on a train......He is trying to teach some sort of lesson, that you don't find out until the very end...........The stories are: "I Will Make You Love Me" An Extreme tale Of Sex, Lies, & Duct Tape", This had some twisted ending..... "The Worst Kind Of Monster", which was new to me and quite a surprise..... "Last Words", which was excellent and left me wanting more......I would like another story about "Adam Booth"..... "Pound" "An Extreme Tale Of Sex, Blood & Fast Food", I already read and reviewed, about vicious bullying......So, if you hadn't read any of these stories, sit back and enjoy your fresh horror......From kindle unlimited.......

1 of 2 people found the following review helpful. You have been warned - highly recommended. By Wookie Note: I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review. This is the first book of Shaun Hupp's that I have read. Suffice to say, it won't be the last after reading this fine collection. Using the 'family' as a an overarching bridge between stories, each new chapter/story alludes to the Mother, Father, Daughter, Son with the intro (of sorts) setting up the following tales whereby the events in each following story hark back to the warning, "I want to tell you a story if I may? It's not a happy story I warn you, but a necessary one. It's a story of revenge and[/or] love gone wrong." This warning (of things to come) is made to the Mother who appears in the first short tale, set on a subway-train. It as much a warning to the mother as it is to the reader. The stories have vivid and graphic imagery and description and are equal parts disturbing, horrific, violent and utterly compelling. Check out booknerdsbraindump review for a breakdown of each story. The stand out story for me was 'Pound' and I enjoyed the way Hupp managed to unify the stories at the end with the finale. Highly recommended, but as I mentioned, you have been warned.

When King Confidus discovers a plan to turn all the people in the city of Elysium into vampires, as disciples to the Dark Lord Makoor, he seeks help from a prophecy written by Felicia – the Golden Fleece. This prophecy states that three agents, known as the “Three C’s,” are destined to stop the Dark Lord, the vampires, and his henchman, the Goncools, from a life of darkness. Confidus chooses his son Caprius, a knight master and brilliant warrior, to journey to the far reaches of Alamptria to discover the location of the vampires’ lair and stop them before their power becomes too great. With Caprius, Confidus sends a young woman, Calista, new as an agent but with a reputation as a fierce and brave warrior. Unknown to all in the king’s council is that Calista has dark secrets that make her more than a mere agent of Petoshine. The two set out, at first uncomfortable with their paring, but soon, they warm to each other, and the truth is revealed, bringing them closer than ever. Caprius feels for Calista, with her broken past, and Calista cannot help but be enamored by his intelligence, wit, and skill as a fighter. Their desires are challenged, mostly because Caprius’ wife is at home under the spell of a vampire sorceress; yet, they push forward, knowing the lives of their people are in their hands. Through numerous battles with vampires, Goncools, and other creatures, death comes close to Caprius and Calista more than once, but their powerful claymore swords protect them against their adversaries. Their journey is also helped by a woman named Cynthia, a striking woman from Caprius’ past, who is on a mission of her own to save the world. In the end, the three will face a fiery battle to save not only themselves, but the mortal world, as well. Richard A Valicek delivers a heart pounding exciting sci-fi fantasy horror.

While I have to say it is not the best book out there, I do have to recognize the authors job to make a creative plot. There were some mistakes here and there but I never got bored for to long. Calista was my favorite character loved the arrows. I would have liked a little more fighting in the last chapter but that is just me being more picky than necesarry. As I always say, I would recommend this book, we all have a different opinion and who knows maybe this will become your favorite book so why no give it a try.

The story centers around the Seaton family in a land called Alamptria. The Seatons are a noble house and Confidus Seaton, father of Caprius, Dragus and Andromin, (who we later learn is not actually Confidus’ birth son) is the king. His sons are knight masters of Petoshine, able to access the great powers of the Vim with their incredible claymores of power to fight and defeat the forces of evil.Makoor, the Dark Lord, desires above all else, to conquer the lands of Alamptria, change all humans into vampires and rule over the hordes of undead for eternity. Chief among Makoors evil vampire minions are Titanis Clore, the Goncool brothers and Cambrozes Genesis. These vampires are truly horrific monsters. No sparkles here, folks. This pace set in this intriguing tale is fast to breath-taking. It kept me anxiously turning pages from the beginning to the very end, and left me looking forward to the next book in this exciting series with great expectation.Mr. Valicek’s world building skills are excellent. He uses an interesting blend of various time periods to create a world that is a unique mixture of old world charm and modern technological convenience. One of this author’s greatest strengths is his ability to describe the setting and action in the tale with such vivid clarity that it is like actually watching the story take place as you read; a gift of a master storyteller.Valicek’s characters are varied and interesting and quite easy to identify with and care about. I particularly like Caprius Seaton and his knight partner, Calista Genesis. As the story progresses it becomes clear that the relationship between the pair surpasses that of a simple working relationship, in spite of Seaton’s marital status, and love or his newly pregnant wife, Melina Hampshire. It will be interesting to see how this all plays out in the end, particularly considering Calista’s past history, and the fact that Felicia-the Golden Fleece has prophesied that Melina’s unborn son will destroy the Dark Lord Makoor and the undead creatures of Mount Drone.Quantum Heights is an enthralling and most enjoyable tale of good versus evil that lovers of the paranormal genre won’t want to miss. I highly recommend this book and look forward to the next book in the series.

Hollywood Book Reviews By Nicole Sorkin Quantum Heights: Book One of the Dead Path Chronicles is a dark fiction novel containing quite an interesting mix of anachronistic themes which include elements of ancient concepts and futuristic ideas. This novel might be considered a part of the “vampire” genre but it is more of a trans-historical blending of fantasy and science fiction. As such, the book evokes the style of steampunk but given the large medieval themes, it might more accurately belong to the elfpunk or mythpunk sub-genres. Building upon the medieval elements of knights, kings, realms, and magic, Valicek incorporates science fiction, myth, and romance quite well. One of the more interesting things about this novel is how many time periods and genres are included in this collage. The tale centers upon a prince/warrior, Caprius, son of Confidus Seaton. Caprius and his warrior partner, Calista, a woman with a mysterious past, are the two main protagonists who embark on a journey to stop a dark lord; killing vampires and the undead along the way. This is a good old story of the forces of light versus the evil of the dark. An oracle (prophet) provides guidance and there are elements of both dark and evil mystical influences. So, there is a subtle nod to mythology and works such as the Star Wars universe, which also contains elements of the ancient (samurai) within a futuristic context. There are vampires in Quantum Heights but this is not a vampire novel. It is an epic journey that seems to exist in a confluence of all historical eras.Caprius and Calista are on a quest to stop the Dark Lord, Makoor, from converting the people of Alamptria and Elysium into vampires. This resistance to an encroaching force has subtle political undertones, but in the end, it is a story of good versus evil. Caprius and Calista will receive help, namely from Cynthia, thus completing the prophecy of the three C's. Calista will have to deal with her past associations with the evil Cambrozes Genesis, while striving to fight for Confidus and the people of Alamptria. Caprius is the main “good guy” but Calista's backstory is more nuanced and interesting, thus making her somewhat of a Luke Skywalker character in this mythpunk adventure. There is something for everyone in this novel, mainly because there is just so much inclusion from many different time periods and literary genres. It is an audacious attempt of all things found in customary science fiction writing and therefore makes for an interesting read. This is about the journey of a hero and a heroine. It is an epic tale whose plot is pushed forward by the necessity of maintaining the balance between good and evil. With this universal theme and the many allusions, the story of Caprius and Calista might evoke thoughts of Romulus and Remus or maybe even a Biblical nod to the first man and woman. Given these themes and comparisons, and since this is the first book of these chronicles, the novel ends with the sense of new beginning.I highly recommend Quantum Heights: Book One of the Dead Path Chronicles by R. A. Valicek across the genres as this story definitely has something for everyone.
