The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl Vol. 1: Squirrel Power, by Ryan North

From School Library Journal Gr 5–8—Supervillains and criminals meet their match with Tony Stark's friend Squirrel Girl, aka Doreen Green, a college freshman with the appearance, speed, and agility of a squirrel. Fitting in proves to be challenging, as normal girls do not talk to or have a squirrel sidekick, nor do they have super strength. Then there is Squirrel Girl's roommate, who has a tough exterior and is obsessed with knitting and her cat. Luckily, Squirrel Girl has a knack for winning people over. When Galactus threatens Earth, the heroine must rely on more than strength to defeat the Devourer of Worlds. She may have extraordinary strength, an army of squirrels at her disposal, a collection of Deadpool villain trading cards, and nut-inspired catchphrases, but it is her ability to form connections with people that proves to be her most powerful asset. North and Henderson have created a fun, fast-paced graphic novel that will appeal to Marvel fans as well as readers who are unfamiliar with—or do not enjoy—traditional superhero comics. Bright, bold color choices fit well with the humorous tone. Squirrel Girl is likable, confident, and endearing—the first scene shows her beating up muggers while enthusiastically singing her self-written theme song. The updated character design, snappy dialogue, and quirky characteristics make her a relatable heroine whom readers of all ages will root for. Also included is the 1991 classic Marvel Super-Heroes #8 comic, in which Squirrel Girl first appears. VERDICT A first-purchase for all graphic novel collections.—Marissa Lieberman, East Orange Public Library, NJ

About the Author Ryan North is the Toronto-based creator of Dinosaur Comics, co-editor of Machine of Death, and writer of ADVENTURE TIME. He is also the creator of Project Wonderful, an auction-based ad serving system.

14 of 15 people found the following review helpful. I am NUTS about this book......or Steve Ditko's 2nd best creation. By Stephen Vincent Kempton This trade paperback collects the first four issues of Squirrel Girl's ongoing series which started in January 2015 plus her debut appearance in Marvel Superheroes #8 from 1990.The writing is from Ryan North of Dinosaur Comics and most recently the Adventure Time Comic. Art is by the Indie / Alternative darling Erica Henderson. The art is charming and delightful in it's simplicity and quirkiness. The writing is simplistic but equally charming. This is a book that can be enjoyed by the very young and the very old and everybody in between.Doreen Green is Squirrel Girl and she is an over night sensation. That is if you consider 25 years over night. Created by Steve Ditko (Spider-Man's co-creator) and Will Murray ( author of new Doc Savage and Tarzan Novels) in 1990. She was kept alive by writers such as Dan Slott who placed her in his Great Lakes Avengers. Some credit must also be given to G Willow Wilson who's Ms. Marvel reboot proved their was a market for books featuring teen aged girl super-heroes.Doreen Green who was fifteen in her first appearance is now old enough to start college (18 ?) We join the book as Doreen starts her college life. She has the proportional speed and strength of a squirrel. She also has a large bushy tail which she tucks in her pants when in her civilian identity so that she looks like Nicki Minaj. She also can talk with squirrels and have them do her bidding. Tippy-Toe the squirrel is her faithful friend and side kick. This book should be also praised for giving us a young girl character with a realistic body type and not another big boobed centerfold shaped girl that you find in most superhero comics. The first issue is a stand alone where she goes up against Kraven The Hunter. The manner in which she outwits Kraven is totally delightful.Starting with issue #2 Doreen becomes aware of an eminent attack by Galactus and the next three stories culminate with there meeting. Along the way her roommate Nancy Whitehead gets in trouble during a bank robbery and we meet Whiplash of Iron Man fame. The original Ditko / Murray story is included in which fifteen year old Squirrel Girl tries to have Iron-Man take her in as his sidekick . The two of them then must battle Doctor Doom. Also included are all the delightful covers and alternative covers plus the original letter pages. Ryan North also includes his own silly commentary at the bottom of most pages in small little beige lettering. It is just barely visible.OK so maybe Squirrel Girl isn't Steve Ditko's second best creation after Spider-Man. There is after all Doctor Strange, The Question, The Creeper, Mr. A and Hawk & Dove and many more. But I was afraid you wouldn't read this review if I said Ditko's twelfth best creation. What is true about this book is that it is absolutely charming and fun and you should love it.My Highest Recommendation.

My daughter was showing an interest in superheroes and loved Zita the Spacegirl, so I thought this would be a nice next comic to read. She LOVES it, and I can actually enjoy it, too. I've laughed out loud multiple times, which is a lot more than I can say about anything else I've ever read to her. I would have probably bought this for myself anyway, but I thought I'd leave a review in case anyone else is on the fence about whether this is good for kids. It's hard (but getting easier!) to find books or comics that are good for younger kids but also stand up to repeated readings. I love that this is something I can read on my own but also share with my daughter.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. My daughter and I both love it By C. Muffoletto I'm a long time comic book reader, but Squirrel Girl is unlike anything else out there right now. It's clever and funny, and the heroine would actually rather not fight if she can avoid it. Best of all, the book, unlike those starring the most popular superheroes, is for all-ages, which means I can hand it over to my 6-year-old, who loves it, too. She looks through it every day and we even practice her reading using it.If you are familiar with the characters and history of Marvel comics, you will get more out of the stories. However, if you aren't, you will still be charmed, entertained, and will probably laugh out loud a few times. And your kids will, too.

Excerpt from The Victorian Age in LiteratureA section of a long and splendid literature can be most conveniently treated in one of two ways. It can be divided as one cuts a currant cake or a Gruyere cheese, taking the currants (or the holes) as they come. Or it can be divided as one cuts wood - along the grain: if one thinks that there is a grain. But the two are never the same: the names never come in the same order in actual time as they come in any serious study of a spirit or a tendency.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. About the Author Gilbert Keith Chesterton was born in London, England, in 1874. He went on to study art at the Slade School, and literature at University College in London. Chesterton wrote a great deal of poetry, as well as works of social and literary criticism. Among his most notable books are "The Man Who Was Thursday", a metaphysical thriller, and "The Everlasting Man", a history of humankind's spiritual progress. After Chesterton converted to Catholicism in 1922, he wrote mainly on religious topics such as "Orthodoxy" and "Heretics". Chesterton is most known for creating the famous priest-detective character Father Brown, who first appeared in "The Innocence of Father Brown". Chesterton died in 1936 at the age of 62.

8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Please Read By Daniel Myers This book is simply a must read for all those who love the great English novels of the Victorian Era and, furthermore, its poetry which, while historically it has fallen into what Chesterton would probably see as justified neglect (save that of Robert Browning), and is now seen as a pale and jejune lifting from the "High Romantics," notably Byron and Shelley, to whom Chesterton pays due homage at the beginning of the work, was much more preeminent at the time. Also, English prose writers get a thorough threshing out. Above all, Chesterton's treatment of Dickens is the most remarkable aspect of this work. I've never read such a spot on and thorough treatment of that omnipresent Victorian anywhere. But all this would be for naught if it weren't for Chesterton's unique and thorough style of assessing these authors. There are thousands of dry dissertations on the subject and just as many tendentious books published full of stifling academese drivel that renders them well nigh unreadable. The closest thing in the modern era to which I can compare Chesterton's writing is Harold Bloom. But this is not quite fair to either of them. Chesterton is far less trenchant. His judgments are made in a mollifying context, and he doesn't rely on anything like the "anxiety of influence" to bolster his insights.Of course, all this presumes a broad knowledge of the Victorian era, such as the Pre-Raphaelite movement in art etc. But I presume any reader of this review possesses such knowledge, or they wouldn't be considering the purchase of this book.PLEASE do buy it or check it out or something, especially if you are a beleaguered student (graduate or undergrad). I wish I'd had this splendid, readable, erudite analysis to pass around my Victorian Novels seminar in Grad School-sighs-Everybody at the time was reading the banal Feminist tract, The Mad Woman in The Attic (allusion, if you didn't catch it, to Jane Eyre (the novel, not the character). - In any event, this book is simply a joy to read for anybody who loves English literature and splendid writing. My highest praise.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Not Your Typical Chesterton Book By Kindle Customer No, this one does not have any of the pithy sayings for which G.K. is famous. But if you are a fan of literature you'll enjoy his take on these Victorian authors. He wrote the book when these authors were still widely read so he assumes the reader knows a lot about them. Even though I'm quite a literature fan, I had only heard of half of them. After reading this book I looked up books by several of the obscure authors he recommended and I can see why they were put to rest. Still, this is a fascinating overview of Victorian novelists.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. We may laugh at the Victorians, and forget that they may be laughing at us. By Christopher (o.d.c.) Publication date: 1913, in the "Home University Library," and yet as unlike a textbook as could be:"... It was latitudinarian, and yet it was limited. It could be content with nothing less than the whole cosmos: yet the cosmos with which it was content was small. It is false to say it was without humour: yet there was something by instinct unsmiling in it. It was always saying solidly that things were 'enough'; and proving by that sharpness (as of the shutting of a door) that they were not enough. It took, I will not say its pleasures, but even its emancipations, sadly. Definitions seem to escape this way and that in the attempt to locate it as an idea. But every one will understand me if I call it George Eliot."Chesterton's style is boisterous and engaging, and there were lots of brilliant remarks throughout that set conventional wisdom (of his day or ours) on its pointy little head. One chapter is about novelists (Dickens, George Eliot, George Meredith and others), one chapter is about poets (Browning Swinburne, Fitzgerald's Rubaiyat). These are framed by chapters about the climate of ideas at the beginning of the age, and at the end:"... The difference that the period had developed can best be seen if we consider this: that while neither was of a spiritual sort, Macaulay took it for granted that common sense required some kind of theology, while Huxley took it for granted that common sense meant having none. Macaulay, it is said, never talked about his religion: but Huxley was always talking about the religion he hadn't got."Here is one more quote which I find perhaps the most thought-provoking:"... It meant a real Victorian talent; that of exploding unexpectedly and almost, as it seemed, unintentionally. Gilbert made good jokes by the thousand; but he never (in his best days) made the joke that could possibly have been expected of him. This is the last essential of the Victorian. Laugh at him as a limited man, a moralist, conventionalist, an opportunist, a formalist. But remember also that he was really a humorist; and may still be laughing at you."

3 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Get this just for Poe's essay on "The Raven". And the cat essay. By MJP2 Since it's free, there's really no sense in *not* getting it. But what really makes this a good buy is the essay by Edgar Allan Poe detailing step-by-step how he wrote "The Raven". Get it just for that. The only other item that I thought really shined was an essay about a cat. I've never met a more interesting cat. I hate pets, but I had to read about the cat because the essay was just that good. So, yes, pick this up, but aside from what I've mentioned, don't expect too much from it.

By as baby Babylons do SKITS Benjamin Frenklin is a great place to start if you want to know what kind of men combined an interest in science with an active social life when the United Ststes of America needed a constitution that could allow commerce to provide what Nietzsche in Daybreak called the major activity we expect to pass on to our children. Franklin bought a whistle when he was a kid, but he did not get the kind of deal that makes people count American eyeballs now. This book is deeper than a consumer survey. Maybe in spite of itself.

A scientific discovery is the outcome of an interesting process of evolution in the mind of its author. When we are able to detect the germs of thought in which such a discovery has originated, and to trace the successive stages of the reasoning by which the crude idea has developed into an epoch-making book, we have the materials for reconstructing an important chapter of scientific history. Such a contribution to the story of the "making of science" may be furnished in respect to Darwin's famous theory of coral-reefs, and the clearly reasoned treatise in which it was first fully set forth.

About the Author Charles Darwin was an English naturalist and author best-known for his revolutionary theories on the origin of species, human evolution, and natural selection. A life-long interest in the natural world led Darwin to neglect his medical studies and instead embark on a five-year scientific voyage on the HMS Beagle, where he established his reputation as a geologist and gathered much of the evidence that fuelled his later theories.A prolific writer, Darwin s most famous published works include The Voyage of the Beagle, On the Origin of Species, The Descent of Man, and Selection in Relation to Sex, and The Expression of Emotions in Man and Animals. Darwin died in 1882, and in recognition of his contributions to science, is buried in Westminster Abbey along with John Herschel and Isaac Newton.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Corel Reefs By Steven This book came with all the original diagrams which I have noticed many such books lack without telling you. The diagrams were scanned from the originals but were of a small size making some of the small text illegible. Perhaps the original pictures were larger. Some companies that reproduce old books use optical character recognition (OCR) that copies the text but not the drawings and then don't do anything to add the drawings. They may even not format the text properly. A company called General Books published by Macmillan And Company has done this. Other companies scan the pages so as to best capture the text, which is not always best for the pictures which may have shading, and just reproduce what they have scanned including any underlining of text by the books owners and any other marks most of which could have been removed. One such book, The Variation of Animals and Plants Under Domestication Part One by Charles Darwin published by Kessinger Publishing's Rare Reprints, mentions stripes on a drawing of a horse, which is rather dark all over, where no such stripes are visible but when I looked the book up on the net the drawing is far lighter with clear stripes. One company who's photos seem acceptable, although pale, is Bibliolife at least in Volume II of Alfred Russel Wallace's My Life: A Record of Events and Opinions and who's drawings in Charles Darwin's The Formation of Vegetable Mould, Through the Action of Worms, With Observations on their Habits are also OK, although I have not seen the originals to make a comparison. New York University Press's Charles Darwin book Movements and Habits of Climbing Plants also has drawings that are OK, although again I have not seen the originals. People looking for reprints of old books should try to find out the quality of any drawings and even if drawings in original printings are included before buying.

It's a slightly cleaned-up version of the free public domain book available elsewhere, but neither of them has any graphics of any kind. Good ebook quality, but Darwin refers to his figures quite a bit, and it's pretty hard to know what he's talking about without them.I mistakenly thought the other reviewer was also reviewing the Kindle version, but note that he's reviewing the HARDCOVER version.

Although in some respects more technical in their subjects and style than Darwin's "Journal," the books here reprinted will never lose their value and interest for the originality of the observations they contain. Many parts of them are admirably adapted for giving an insight into problems regarding the structure and changes of the earth's surface, and in fact they form a charming introduction to physical geology and physiography in their application to special domains.

The societal picture painted by Cole is mainly gray: for second and third class citizens, life is literally lived underground, at subsistence or lower, and closely monitored in all aspects. The few ruling elite, the first class citizens, enjoy personal freedoms and luxuries and exercise control over the rest, forming the basis for Cole criticism of socialist societies. By Charles Daniel Christopher This short-story is a fairly believable scenario of what would happen to society and business institutions should someone invent a device that allows telepathic communication. The question of what might happen when we can completely understand each other is considered. Also, considered is the idea that a lack of empathy makes a person a better business-man; since such a person will not be swayed by human concerns.
