Excerpt from The Best Letters of Charles LambIn this edition of the correspondence of Charles Lamb, that of his sister, Mary Lamb, is for the first time included. In it also appear for the first time between seventy and eighty letters, many of them of the highest importance; and it is the first edition to take note in chronological order of those letters printed by other editors that are not available for the present volumes: a step which should, I think, add to the biographical value of the work.In these two volumes I have, after much consideration, placed my notes at the end of each letter, rather than, as in the five preceding volumes, at the end of the book. My reason for doing so was twofold: in the first place, to serve the convenience of the reader, to whom annotation of the correspondence is often a necessity, and not, as in the case of the other writings, a luxury; and in the second place, because by joining the letters with a few words of commentary they can be made practically into a consecutive Life. The self-conscious deliberate construction of Lamb's essays and poems, each a work of art, forbade the introduction of footnotes that might distract the attention from the true matter of the text: hence, in the preceding five volumes, such remarks as the editor had to make will be found sharply separated from the authors part of the book. But here, where Lamb is often writing without premeditation, with a running pen, and writing moreover for a single reader, it seemed to me that the impropriety of interrupting the correspondence by elucidatory comments was so slight as to be almost non-existent.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. 3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. curious after reading The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by [Mary Ann Shaffer By laura hornberger I had never heard of Charles Lamb--what kind of liberal arts education did I receive!! Was curious after falling in love with Mary Ann Shaffers' book & felt deep disappointment she would never be telling me a story again! So decided to explore the connecting point for her story: a book by Charles Lamb. Reading him is like curling up with a cup of tea and an old friend. Will go back to again & again Thank you Mary Ann Shaffer!

2 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Not the book to be introduced to Lamb By Rainbow Traveler Having seen him referenced in countless crossword puzzles, I decided to find out who Charles Lamb (pen name - Elia) was. I found this book on Amazon and bought it, hoping to become acquainted with his works. The letters appear to be too personal in reference for me to understand, not knowing him, his history, works or acquaintances. Surely, a student of Lamb would find this collection more interesting or appealing. I sadly closed the book in less than 25 pages, hoping to find another book which gives me a more general impression of his works.

Ebook PDF Online The Redemption of the Animals: Their Evolution, Their Inner Life, and Our Future Together, by Douglas Sloan

As human beings, what is our true relationship to the animals on earth? What is our responsibility to our fellow creatures? Douglas Sloan explores these and other questions in this important book on the human-animal connection. His explorations are based on personal experience and wide-ranging research into the work of Rudolf Steiner and others, including scientist students of the inner life of animals and committed defenders of animal wellbeing. Rudolf Steiner describes how from the beginning of creation humans and animals have been united in deep kinship. A loss of the sense of this human–animal connection has resulted in an immense animal suffering the world over. Especially in their suffering, the animals now pose for the modern human being many pressing and perplexing questions. Are the animals conscious? Do they have feelings like ours? Do they experience pain? Do the animals have a spiritual reality and experience? Do the animals have souls and selves? Do the animals have capacities for cognitive intelligence, emotional empathy, language, and memory? Is there a crucial difference between the human and the animal, a basic difference in kind, or only a difference in degree? Do animals have rights? Are we justified in using the animals as we wish—eating them, hunting them, experimenting on them? Rudolf Steiner presents a vision of the ultimate redemption of the animals from their suffering. What is the nature of this redemption? What is our responsibility in making it happen? In exploring these and related questions with the help of Rudolf Steiner’s work and that of others on the issue, we can begin to see the importance in our time of our relating to the animals in a completely new way—a relationship that understands and respects the animals’ inner spiritual being, and one that requires a deep grasp of our own spiritual being in relation to theirs. In this book, Douglas Sloan seeks to help us toward this new relationship with the animals, both in concept and in everyday action.

This collection of stories is an experiment. It's not particularly good writing or even good story-telling, but it is honest. I start with a memory or an idea or a first sentence. and then I start writing. I follow each word to the next not knowing where I'm going until the story is done, until it feels right. There is no revising. There is very little editing. It is naked and raw. It includes; 1. "The Apology: What happens in the men's room stays in the men's room” - This story is an apology to a man I have never met. It's not an excuse or a justification in any way. But, perhaps these thoughtful words will serve as a humble explanation of exactly what happened in the public men's room at the Loews movie theater in the winter of 1984. 2. “Paradise by the Dashboard Light” - A young American tries to make sense of love and lust in the back seat of a vintage Mercedes-Benz. 3. “Up on a Roof: With shingles at your back, the sky is the limit” - Sometimes, a barbaric yawp is better with a good friend, a bottle of cheap wine, and a visit or two from the local police. 4. “On My Knees: Pausing on the path of righteousness” - A teen boy find his faith on the way to getting kicked out of summer bible camp. 5. “Playing Hooky: Childhood best friends go fishing for adventure” - Skipping school, bicycles, fishing and a bottle of Jim Beam. What more could a couple of 13-year-old boys in the country ask for? 6. "The Great Cover-up: Frustrated writer exposes the naked truth about looking normal" - The memoir of an unconventional dad who faced down the local Red Ribbon Week Committee without a towel. 7. “Karaoke Night: Sometimes, there's a fine line between courage and crazy” - A New York writer learns a few life lessons in a back-water, south-Florida bar. 8. “Up in Arms: Unusual friendship stirs up trouble in small town and small minds” - When the town’s biggest trouble-maker befriended the local golden boy, people expected the worst. They weren’t too far off. 9. “Naked at the YMCA; Joining the local “Y” is no laughing matter” - When I signed up for a trial membership at the local gym, it became clear that I was the one on trial. 10. "Einstein Rode Bitch" - A brilliant physicist finds the ultimate loop-hole in the equation for intimacy. He discovers a way to travel into the future so he can have sex with himself. Why not? After all, nobody knows him better. The idea is that this form of structured, free-flow writing is an unfiltered, original expression of who I am. There is no doubt about it. I have certainly learned a lot about myself in the process. The question is whether these stories will have any meaning for anyone other than me. Can we discover truths about ourselves and the world around us by exploring the truths of others? I hope so. If not, I hope it at least inspires a good laugh here and there. A NOTE FROM THE WRITER: This is a real life. It is my life. I like to think it is a life of hope and love, but it does contain some hard memories and hard words. If you are fragile with that kind of stuff, this book may not be for you.

The main character is named Brian ( like the author) and he is full of surprises. A lot of stories, and the author manages to make you feel like the character did, there's a lot of laughing and also some pretty raw parts that though they made the story it was hard to read sometimes, but most of all it was an enjoyable experience.

Excerpt from Gilbert Keith ChestertonIt is certain that up to a point in the evolution of Self most people find life quite exciting and thrilling. But when middle age arrives, often prematurely, they forget the thrill and excitements; they become obsessed by certain other lesser things that are deficient in any kind of Cosmic Vitality. The thrill goes out of life: a light dies down and flickers fitfully; existence goes on at a low ebb - something has been lost. From this numbed condition is born much of the blind anguish of life.It is one of the tragedies of human existence that the divine sense of wonder is eventually destroyed by inexcusable routine and more or less mechanical living. Mental abandon, the exercise of fancy and imagination, the function of creative thought - all these things are squeezed out of the consciousness of man until his primitive enjoyment of the mystical part of life is affected in a very serious way.Nothing could be more useful, therefore, than to write a book about a man who has done more than any other living writer to stimulate and preserve the primitive sense of wonder and joy in human life. Gilbert Keith Chesterton has never lost mental contact with the cosmic simplicity of human existence. He knows, as well as anybody has ever known, that the life of man goes wrong simply because we are too lazy to be pleased with simple, fundamental things. We grow up in our feverish, artificial civilization, believing that the real, satisfying things are complex and difficult to obtain. Our lives become unnaturally stressed and tormented by the pitiless and incessant struggle for social conditions which are, at best, second-rate and ultimately disappointing.G. K. Chesterton would restore the primitive joys of wonder and childlike delight in simple things. His ideal is the real, not the merely impossible.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A short collection from a long time ago By Christopher (o.d.c.) Publication date: 1910CONTENTS 1. English Literature, 2. Amiel's "Journal Intime", 3. Browning, 4. "Robert Elsmere" 5. Their Majesties' Servants, 6. Wordsworth, 7. Mr. Gosse's Poems, 8. Ferdinand Fabre, 9. The "Contes" of M. Augustin Filon.I was surprised at myself, coming to the end of this short collection, to find that I had once rated it two stars. I must have been put off by the first essay, and by the unfamiliar names in the table of contents, because there are three or four essays of the nine which are well worth reading, mostly because Pater quotes extensively from the books he is reviewing. Here he quotes from Amiel's Journal and comments on it:"The relation of thought to action," he writes, "filled my mind on waking, and I found myself carried towards a bizarre formula, which seems to have something of the night still clinging about it. Action is but coarsened thought." That is but an ingenious metaphysical point, as he goes on to show. But, including in "action" that literary production in which the line of his own proper activity lay, he followed—followed often—that fastidious utterance to a cynical and pessimistic conclusion. The long discussion of the merits and demerits of ROBERT ELSEMERE builds up to this outspoken remark:Doubtless, it is part of the ideal of the Anglican Church that, under certain safeguards, it should find room for latitudinarians even among its clergy. Still, with these, as with all other genuine priests, it is the positive not the negative result that justifies the position. We have little patience with those liberal clergy who dwell on nothing else than the difficulties of faith and the propriety of concession to the opposite force."Their Majesties' Servants" is a review of a history of actors and the stage, and the anecdotes are marvelous:An angry word, passed one April evening of 1682 between the son of Sir Edward Dering and a hot-blooded young Welshman, led to recrimination and sword-drawing. The two young fellows not having elbow-room in the pit, clambered on to the stage, and fought there, to the greater comfort of the audience, and with a more excited fury on the part of the combatants. The mingling of the public with the players was a practice which so annoyed the haughty French actor, Baron, that to suggest to the audience the absurdity of it, he would turn his back on them for a whole act, and play to the audience on the stage.Pater reviews a few French authors who are hardly remembered today. His accounts of their novels and stories are quite detailed and illustrative.Walter Horatio Pater wrote more significant books than this slim collection of newspaper pieces, but it is a fine introduction to his style and often intrinsically interesting as well.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. and for some reason it reads like it was translated poorly from another language By M I just purchased the kindle version, and for some reason it reads like it was translated poorly from another language. Verbatim example from page one: "In this Modern Era everything depends on computer. [...] It can analyze anything and produce the result in efficient way. Now one doubt may arise which is how computer performs these critical tasks in simple form. Answer is Statistical Systems. History of R Quite Interesting in 80's AT&T Laboratory released the Statistical Software named as S using the Interpretative computer Language scheme."I looked further into the book to see if it got better-- if this was just some gross oversight. But alas: "In this Guide I used and Recommending Sublime Text Editor."I don't know whether or not the content itself is solid apart from the consistent grammatical mistakes, but the book has clearly not been edited.

The writing was so bad as to be unreadable. On the very first page it says, "So you've decided to learn Perl Programming?". Perl? This book is supposed to be about learning R (and is), but they have the wrong front content. A typical sentence reads like this (real example): "They are not struggled to give name for their own language." If you're looking for R content the book may be good - I couldn't tell you - because I couldn't get over the writing which only resembles English.

I m new in this R dialect and I've heard a considerable measure about Eprogramy dialect book. I learned R in a matter of seconds! which I believed is unthinkable. Will beyond any doubt attempt a greater amount of Eprogramy books.Everything was flawlessly and consummately clarified. There is additionally a brisk test for each lesson to know the amount you've learned. This book will be helpful in the event that you need to self-study on these programming dialects.

As the nineteen sixties dissolved and evolved from innocence to dissidence, placid to acid, pop to pow, it did not take long for writers to recognize the wry, enigmatic figure of John Lennon, a man who did not suffer fools or play by the rules — was one leading the way. Literally years in literary making, Lines on Lennon: A John Lennon Collection, places one, for instance, in a Canadian hotel room when “Give Peace a Chance” is being written and recorded; on the banks of the Ganges in India, when meditation is the new medication; or in an English garden, where a day in a rain inspires “I Am the Walrus.” Deemed authoritative by other authors, works by Larchwood & Weir are often referenced in books on the Beatles — such as George Harrison: Behind the Locked Door, and All the Songs: The Story Behind Every Beatles Release. Give Peace a Chance.

There is so much going on, not very nice things around us.Things that make us think what if something happens to us, how do we get ready for such situations. It is not easy to be withour electricity and internet. The book provides the basic information what to stockpile, and people often ask how much to stock, but the answer is simple, as much as the space allows you. Having a lot of food is great, but one has to think how to prepare it, too. There are also skills to be learned and mastered like learning to purify the water, how to find and grow food, learn about first aid..Very good guide!

I think it could have been a little bit more detailed though. I would rather not go back and show each example of editing errors or give examples as to why I think there should be more detail as I am not one to take much time giving reviews unless I love or hate the review. I am in the middle, therefore the 3.

By Jay Shah The Princess, the Scoundrel, and the Farm Boy is not merely a retelling of Star Wars: A New Hope, but genuinely adds to the cinematic experience. From the mythical tone of the prologue and epilogues, to the narrative written from the tight third-person perspective of the "Big Three" of Leia, Han, and Luke, Alexandra Bracken captures the feel and tone of the original Star Wars film. Even if -- or perhaps especially if -- you've seen the film dozens of times, the book harnesses the old joy and magic of seeing the movie for the first time. For those who've never seen the film before.... what are you doing on this Amazon page, go watch Star Wars: A New Hope! The book is marketed for kids, specifically kids of the current generation who might not have grown up on the Original Star Wars Trilogy. This book is ideal for those kids who may have still seen the original films, but perhaps associate the movies with their parents' generation. The language is modern -- allowing kids to relate to Leia, Han, or Luke and their heroic journeys -- while also preserving the timelessness inherent to Star Wars. But if you're a teenager or an adult -- or buying for one -- this book has a lot for you too, especially in the way it fleshes out the background of the film. The book is great for both boys and girls: Leia, Han, and Luke get equal page time amongst each other. Leia in particular seemed to get the least attention in the film, and she consequently gets a lot of development in this book. Bracken has a deft touch with Leia, and uses her political background and connection with the Rebellion to great effect. But I absolutely have to add that boys can get a lot of enjoyment out of Leia's chapters and girls can get a lot out of Luke and Han's chapters, too! Everyone has their particular heroes. If you're a kid -- or an adult remembers being a kid who loved Star Wars -- you can't miss this book. If you're trying to introduce Star Wars to youngsters, I can't think of a better place to start than this novel! Bottom line: young or old, male or female -- if you like Star Wars, you'll like this book! I give this book my highest recommendation.

What could go wrong?Alexandra Bracken answers with a resounding "ABSOLUTELY NOTHING."Despite being listed as a novel for grades 3 - 7, there is something for everyone—including the most canon-hungry SW fans—in The Princess, the Scoundrel, and the Farm Boy. The novel features a sorely needed deeper characterization of the galaxy's most famous princess, diving into what exactly drives Leia's passionate hatred of the Empire, what motivates her astounding ambition (the youngest Senator ever elected!), and what makes her, well, such an awesome badass.Bracken details the on-camera events from the film well, but shines in the off-camera moments, the new canonical content that most Star Wars fans crave. (Without spoiling anything: pay careful attention to the truth serum scene in Leia's section...) She writes Luke very well, too, deftly navigating the emotional weight of his transformation from naive farm boy into nascent hero. One of the greatest pleasures of this quick read are the details. A few more precious (canonical!) words between Obi-Wan and Luke about the Force. The bread crumb trail of Han's past (soon to be put under the microscope in the upcoming Anthology film). How exactly Leia can compartmentalize the destruction of Alderaan. Luke lamenting how little time he had with Obi-Wan. And much much more.Get to know the characters behind the tropes in The Princess, the Scoundrel, and the Farm Boy. It's a real treat. Thanks for taking on what must have been an incredible challenge, Ms. Bracken!

Most of the scenes, not shown in the film, were welcomed additions to, now, canonical Star Wars lore.I enjoyed the idea of three perspectives on the story. Luke's portion was a bit lacking, I felt, in that there was no back story. The scene with Biggs, Camie, and Windy, for example, referred to when Luke sees Biggs on Yavin, would have been welcomed.Someone needs to write a DEFINITIVE adaptation to A New Hope.Bit startled that the fact that Darth Vader is pursuing Luke was not mentioned. That is until I reminded myself that this was Luke's point of view. Wedge's training of Luke, however, was great. Was extremely disappointed that dialogue, from the film, was altered.Ex. General Dodonna does not say "Good luck." His line was "Man your ships, and may the Force be with you."

Moby Dick: Titan Classics (Illustrated), by Herman Melville

From School Library Journal Grade 5 Up-Opening with the classic line, "Call me Ishmael," the narrator's New England accent adds a touch of authenticity to this sometimes melodramatic presentation. The St. Charles Players do a credible job on the major roles, but some of the group responses, such as "Aye, aye Captain," sound more comic than serious. This adaptation retains a good measure of Melville's dialogue and key passages which afford listeners a vivid connection with the lengthy novel. Background music and appropriate sound effects enhance the telling of the story about Captain Ahab's obsessive pursuit of the malevolent white whale. The cassettes are clearly marked, and running times are noted on each side of the tapes. Announcements at the beginning of each side and a subtle chime signal at the end make it easy to follow the story, but a stereo player must be used to hear some dialogue. The lightweight cardboard package is inadequate for circulation. Done in a radio theatre format, the recording does a nice job of introducing the deeper themes of the book and covering the major events. For school libraries that support an American literature curriculum, this recording offers a different interpretation of an enduring classic.Barbara Wysocki, Cora J. Belden Library. From Library Journal In a sense, this work is the piece de resistance of the textual revolution in American scholarship of the past generation. The first half is the final MLA "Approved Text" of the classic novel, prepared under the auspices of the Center for Editions of American Authors. The second half consists of an Historical Note detailing background, genetic composition, publication, and ensuing critical reception; a discussion of its textual history; and some relevant marginalia. The work is not only thorough and rigorous, but, considering the scholarly grittiness of the endeavor, surprisingly lucid and graceful in its exposition. Highly recommended for special collections. From Booklist Considerably abridged from what Needle characterizes as Herman Melville's "enormous . . . long and rambling, even obscure" novel, this reworking, with moody illustrations on nearly every page, won't look out of place on a coffee table but still offers plenty of substance. Needle links passages of the original book, ranging in length from one line to several pages, with extended, ruminative summaries and his own comments, which are distinguished by a lighter typeface. Benson ably captures the tale's gloom and grandeur with a plethora of strong character portraits and other illustrations, mostly rendered in shadowed, atmospheric pen and ink, that burst into full color when the white whale arrives on the scene. Closing with a glossary of nautical terms and a labeled cutaway view of a typical whaling ship, this version will appeal to readers who might be after a richer literary experience than Will Eisner offers in his graphic novel retelling (2001) but are still reluctant to immerse themselves in the pleasures of the full-size leviathan. 367 of 381 people found the following review helpful. your understanding might boil down to the quality of the gloss By Caraculiambro Unless you are a naval historian or a Melville scholar, you probably won't have a rewarding (or even comprehensible) time with Moby-Dick at this remove unless the edition you're using comes with a good set of footnotes. Here's the skinny on the various editions currently on shelves:THESE HAVE FOOTNOTES ON THE PAGE ITSELF:* Charles Feidelson, Jr.'s annotated edition. Unquestionably the most all-around useful edition of Moby-Dick ever printed. Generous and highly useful footnotes right on the page, covering lexical, allusional, and cross-referential items. Two disadvantages: you may at times feel put upon by Feidelson's interlarded interpretations, and the thing is totally out of print. Indianapolis: Bobbs-Merrill, 1964. ISBN: 067260311X* The "Norton critical" edition, edited by Parker and Hayford. The edition most widely employed by scholars. Stingier with the footnotes than Feidelson, but still a good second choice. Many useful essays at the end. The layout of the text is a bit hard on the eye, though. Make sure you get the SECOND edition, from 2001. ISBN: 0393972836* The "Barnes and Noble Classics" edition. The footnotes for the most part are skimpy and confined to obscure vocabulary, not cultural and literary allusions. ISBN: 1-59308-018-2THESE HAVE A FOOTNOTES SECTION IN THE BACK OF THE BOOK:* The "Oxford World Classics" edition. About 11 pp. at the end. ISBN: 0-19-283385-5* The "Modern Library" edition. About 13 pp. at the end. ISBN: 0-679-78327-X* The "Penguin Classics" edition. About 15 pp. of notes at the end by Tom Quirk. ISBN: 0-14-24.3724-7 (This is their fancy hardbound version: see next item.)* The "Penguin Classics" edition. About 15 pp. of notes at the end by Tom Quirk. ISBN: 0-14-03.9084-7 (This is their paperback edition, which looks totally different but is exactly the same as the previous entry. This claims to be the "definitive text," but any such claim is spurious -- cf. Hayford and Parker [v.s.] for a good discussion of why. Penguin previously came out with an identical-looking but much thicker version annotated by Harold Beaver: the notes for that edition were copious, but on the whole too fanciful and self-indulgent to be of much use.)* The "Library of America" edition. (This is the one included in the same volume with "Redburn" and "White Jacket.") About 9 pp. of notes at the end. Unfortunately, they're a bit skimpy. You see, they're of the "go get it yourself" kind. For example, when Melville writes, "send Lazarus that he may dip the tip of his finger," the footnotes -- the incidence of which is not marked in the running text -- merely says "Luke 16:24". In other words, you've got to look it up yourself. So I would characterize the footnotes as sparse and taciturn: they'll clue you in to the source, but as for the exact wording of something and its accumulated historical connotations, you've got to come up with those yourself. ISBN: 0-940450-09-7THESE HAVE NO FOOTNOTES WHATSOEVER:Why do publishers still print editions of Moby Dick without any footnotes or glossary whatsoever? Who can read it? What a waste of paper. I get so irritated! In any event, the following publishers have decided you'd prefer your white whale raw:* The "Bantam Classic" edition. ISBN: 0-553-21311-3 Ain't got jack.* The "Everyman's Library" edition. ISBN: 0-679-40559-3. Zilch.* The "Penguin 150th Anniversary" edition. ISBN: 0-14-20.0008-6 Bupkiss! Handsome, though.* The "Arion Press" edition. ISBN: 0-520-04354-5. Also annoyingly oversized. And that's my bit of altruism for the week.

It was a gruelling read, but---in the end---completely worthwhile.I've been reading it for 6 months. I started over the summer, during an abroad program in Oxford, and I remember sitting outside reading when one of the professors came over, saw what I was reading, and said: "It's a very strange book, isn't it?"Looking back, that might be the best way to describe it. The blurb from D.H. Lawrence on the back cover agrees: Moby Dick "commands a stillness in the soul, an awe...[it is] one of the strangest and most wonderful books in the world."Now there are those who will say that the book's middle is unbearable---with its maddeningly detailed accounts of whaling. Part of me agrees. That was the hardest to get through. But, still, even the most dull subject offers Melville an opportunity to show off his writing chops. He's a fantastic writer---his text most resembles that of Shakespeare. And, like one Shakespeare's characters, Melville sees all the world as a stage. Consider this beautiful passage from the first chapter:"Though I cannot tell why it was exactly that those stage managers, the Fates, put me down for this shabby part of a whaling voyage, when others were set down for magnifient parts in high tragedies, and short and easy parts in genteel comedies, and jolly parts in farces--though I cannot tell why this was exactly; yet, now that I recall all the circumstances, I think I can see a little into the springs and motives which being cunningly presented to me under various disguises, induced me to set about performing the part I did, besides cajoling me into the delusion that it was a choice resulting from my own unbiased freewill and discriminating judgment."The end of "Moby Dick" informs the rest of the book, and in doing so makes rereading it inevitable. It is telling that Moby Dick doesn't appear until page 494. It is telling, because, the majority of the book is spent in anticipation---in fact, the whole book is anticipation. It's not unlike sex, actually---delaying gratification to a point of almost sublime anguish. What comes at the book's end, then, is mental, physical, and spiritual release (as well as fufillment). The book leaves you with questions both large and small. I was actually most troubled with this question---What happened to Ishmael? No, we learn his fate at the book's end, but where was he throughout it? We all know how it starts---"Call me Ishmael"---and the book's first few chapters show him interacting with Queequeg and an innkeeper. But then we lose him onboard the Pequod---we never see him interact with anyone. No one ever addresses him. He seems to witness extremely private events---conferences in the Captain's quarters, conversations aboard multiple boats, and--what can only be his conjecture--the other characters' internal dialogue. Is he a phantom? What is he that he isn't? Somehow I think this question masks a much larger and more important one.Try "Moby Dick." Actually, don't try it---read it. Work at it. Like lifting weights a bit heavier than you're used to, "Moby Dick" will strengthen your brain muscle. Don't believe those who hate it, they didn't read it. They didn't work at it. Be like Ishmael, who says: "I try all things; I achieve what I can." Or, more daringly, be like Ahab, whose ambition is his curse, but whose curse propels and writes the book itself.

262 of 274 people found the following review helpful. Open your mind By TJ Last year I decided to expand my intellectual horizons by reading a series of American literary classics. Moby Dick was the first book on my list. It took me three months to finish this legendary story and, looking back on it now, I must say that it was worth every minute. To others who are considering this effort I say this: buttress your stamina and open your mind. This is not John Grisham or Tom Clancy. You will be reading high literature and you will be required to think. If you do so, Ishmael, Ahab and crew will open a window to some of mankind's most profound questions: Is it better to fight evil or promote virtue? Where is the line between honorable justice and blind vengeance? Do bad things happen because the universe is evil or just indifferent? The true pleasure to be derived from reading this book can be found by closing its pages every so often and reflecting on the questions that it will raise in your mind. A completely different experience than breezing through the latest best-seller, but much more rewarding.Be aware that Moby Dick is many types of books in one. It is part adventure story, part sermon, part history of whaling, part encyclopedia of whale anatomy, part metaphysical allegory. Expect it to change periodically as you move through it, be receptive to each part, and don't try to compartmentalize it as any one particular type of work.
