I love the character of Isabella in this book By Anna Bennova I love the character of Isabella in this book. It's interesting when an author bases a character so much on details that mirror the ones found in her biography. It makes the reader pause and wonder.Loved the scenic travels and wonderful expanding story. The story is explicit and full of vivid imagery and almost leaves nothing to the imagination.

Was this a true to life story? It seems familiar to me but i cannot tell if i just watched them on television or a movie but this is a nice royal drama.

By Maria Clarke For me, "Royal Obsession' was a cute story that made a light and entertaining read. The plot may have been somewhat cliché or trite as some reviewers have accused but the author still managed to instill a "charming" quality into the story that I found satisfying. This is a really good romance. It has all the elements that pull you in and make you love the characters. This story is so interesting that the one reading it can give a clear insight of what is goog or badI enjoyed this book very much, as period pieces are a very good escape from all of the modern day life. I would recommend this book to anyone you enjoys reading.

Despite the substantial interest in landscape genetics from the scientific community, learning about the concepts and methods underlying the field remains very challenging. The reason for this is the highly interdisciplinary nature of the field, which combines population genetics, landscape ecology, and spatial statistics. These fields have traditionally been treated separately in classes and textbooks, and very few scientists have received the interdisciplinary training necessary to efficiently teach or apply the diversity of techniques encompassed by landscape genetics. To address the current knowledge gap, this book provides the first in depth treatment of landscape genetics in a single volume. Specifically, this book delivers fundamental concepts and methods underlying the field, covering particularly important analytical methods in detail, and presenting empirical and theoretical applications of landscape genetics for a variety of environments and species. Consistent with the interdisciplinary nature of landscape genetics, the book combines an introductory, textbook like section with additional sections on advanced topics and applications that are more typical of edited volumes. The chapter topics and the expertise of the authors and the editorial team make the book a standard reference for anyone interested in landscape genetics. The book includes contributions from many of the leading researchers in landscape genetics. The group of scientists we have assembled has worked on several collaborative projects over the last years, including a large number of peer reviewed papers, several landscape genetics workshops at international conferences, and a distributed graduate seminar on landscape genetics. Based on the experiences gained during these collaborative teaching and research activities, the book includes chapters that synthesize fundamental concepts and methods underlying landscape genetics (Part 1), chapters on advanced topics that deserve a more in depth treatment (Part 2), and chapters illustrating the use of concepts and methods in empirical applications (Part 3). This structure ensures a high usefulness of the book for beginning landscape geneticists and experienced researchers alike, so that it has a broad target audience. At least one of the four co editors is involved in almost every chapter of the book, thereby ensuring a high consistency and coherency among chapters.

Landscape Genetics: Concepts, Methods, Applications, by Niko Balkenhol, Samuel Cushman, Andrew Storfer, Lisette Waits

From the Back Cover Landscape genetics is an exciting and rapidly growing field, melding methods and theory from landscape ecology and population genetics to address some of the most challenging and urgent ecological and evolutionary topics of our time. Landscape genetic approaches now enable researchers to study in detail how environmental complexity in space and time affect gene flow, genetic drift, and local adaptation. However, learning about the concepts and methods underlying the field remains challenging due to the highly interdisciplinary nature of the field, which relies on topics that have traditionally been treated separately in classes and textbooks. In this edited volume, some of the leading experts in landscape genetics provide the first comprehensive introduction to underlying concepts, commonly used methods, and current and future applications of landscape genetics. Consistent with the interdisciplinary nature of the field, the book includes textbook-like chapters that synthesize fundamental concepts and methods underlying landscape genetics (Part 1), chapters on advanced topics that deserve a more in-depth treatment (Part 2), and chapters illustrating the use of concepts and methods in empirical applications (Part 3). Aimed at beginning landscape geneticists and experienced researchers alike, this book will be helpful for all scientists and practitioners interested in learning, teaching, and applying landscape genetics.

Even the chapters on the separate fields of population ecology and landscape ecology are written from a landscape genetics perspective. If you are interested in the field this is a great place to start!

Excerpt from The Selected Letters of William JamesThe majority of the letters in this volume have been previously printed in The Letters of William James, edited by his son, Henry James, or in The Thought and Character of William James, by Ralph Barton Perry. Both of these large works came out of the most careful study of James's correspondence and therefore the best of his letters will usually be found in one or the other. However, there are some letters here, taken from the Houghton Library collection at Harvard, not found in either of the two well-known collections. I cannot be sure they have not been printed or referred to in other studies of William James. When I first compared the letters in the two collections with the original manuscripts at Harvard, I was struck by the generous number of commas, dashes, periods and paragraphs that James's son, on the one hand, and Professor Perry, on the other, had added to the manuscript letters. I set about laboriously de-punctuating. I soon found that the pure originals by William James were written in such enthusiastic haste that the addition, here and there, of editorial punctuation is almost a necessity - unless, of course, one were doing a facsimile reproduction of the letters. Rather than add a third unauthorized set of punctuation marks to James's almost unmarked pages, I returned to the punctuation used by previous editors.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A MARVELOUS AND INSIGHTFUL COLLECTION OF LETTERS By Steven H Propp William James (1842-1910) was an American philosopher (noted for his influence on Pragmatism) and psychologist (the first educator to offer a psychology course in the U.S.; see his Principles of Psychology); he was also the brother of the novelist Henry James. He wrote many other books, such as Pragmatism and The Meaning of Truth, The Will to Believe, Essays in Radical Empiricism, The Varieties of Religious Experience, Moral Equivalent of War and Other Essays, Some Problems of Philosophy, etc.He admitted in a May 5, 1868 letter, "I have by this time dropped all hope of doing anything at psychology, for I'm not fit for laboratory work, and even if that were not the only reputable way of cultivating the science at all (which it is), it would be for ME with my bad memory and slack interest in the details, the only practicable way of getting any honest knowledge of the subject." (Pg. 57)In a January 24-25 1869 letter, he says, "I have just been quit by Charles S. Peirce, with whom I have been talking about a couple of articles by him... which I have just read. They are exceedingly bold, subtle and incomprehensible and I can't say that his vocal elucidations helped me a great deal to their understanding, but they nevertheless interest me strangely. The poor cuss sees no change of getting a professorship anywhere, and is likely to go into the Observatory for good. It seems a great pity that as original a man as he is, who is willing and able to devote the powers of his life to logic and metaphysics, should be starved out of a career, when there are lots of professorships of the sort to be given in the country, to `safe,' orthodox men. He has had good reason, I know, to feel a little discouraged about the prospect, but I think he ought to hang on, as a German would do, till he grows gray..." (Pg. 77-78)He reveals in a Jan. 1, 1886 letter, "I enjoy very much a new philosophic colleague, Josiah Royce, from California, who is just thirty years old and a perfect little Socrates for wisdom and humor." (Pg. 125)On March 3, 1895, he wrote to the President of Cambridge University, "I want to propose to you no less a person than Charles S. Peirce, whose name I don't suppose will make you bound with eagerness at first, but you may think better of it after a short reflection... The better graduates would flock to hear him... and he would leave a wave of influence, tradition, gossip, etc. that wouldn't die away for many years. I should learn a lot for his course. Everyone knows of Peirce's personal uncomfortableness; and if I were President I shouldn't hope for a harmonious wind-up to his connection with the University. But I should take that as part of the disagreeableness of the day's work, and shut my eyes and go ahead, knowing that from the highest intellectual point of view it would be the best thing that could happen for the graduates of the Philosophical Department... and it would be a recognition of C.S.P.'s strength, which I am sure is but justice to the poor fellow." (Pg. 146-147)On April 6, 1896, he sent a letter to his class, in which he admitted, "I now perceive on immense omission in my Psychology---the deepest principle of Human Nature is the craving to be appreciated, and I left it out altogether from the book, because I had never had it gratified till now." (Pg. 152-153)On June 11, 1896, he revealed, "I had two days spoiled by a psychological experiment with mescal, an intoxicant used by some of our Southwestern Indians in their religious ceremonies, a sort of cactus bud, of which the U.S. Government had distributed a supply to certain medical men, including Weir Mitchell who sent me some to try. He had himself been `in fairyland.' It gives the most glorious visions of color---every object thought of appears in a jeweled splendor unknown to the natural world. It disturbs the stomach somewhat, but that, according to W.M., was a cheap price, etc. I took one bud three days ago, was violently sick for 24 hours, and had no other symptom whatever except that and the Katzenjammer the following day. I will take the visions on trust!" (Pg. 154)He confessed in an August 30, 1896 letter, "I have definitely given up the laboratory, for which I am more and more unfit, and shall probably devote what little ability I may hereafter have to purely `speculative' work." (Pg. 161)In a February 1,1897 letter, he explained, "As to true and false miracles, I don't know that I can follow you so well, for in any case the notion of a miracle as a mere attestation of superior power is one that I cannot espouse. A miracle must in any case be an expression of personal purpose, but the demon-purpose of antagonizing God and winning away his adherents has never yet taken hold of my imagination. I prefer an open mind of inquiry, first ABOUT THE FACTS, in all these matters; and I believe that the [Society for Psychical Research] methods, if pertinaciously stuck to, will eventually do much to clear things up. You see that, although religion is the great interest of my life, I am rather hopelessly non-evangelical, and take the whole thing too impersonally." (Pg. 166)He said in an April 12, 1900 letter, "The problem I have set myself is a hard one: first, to defend (against all the prejudices of my `class') `experience' against `philosophy' as being the real backbone of the world's religious life---I mean prayer, guidance, and all that sort of thing immediately and privately felt, as against high and noble general views of our destiny and the world's meaning; and second, to make the hearer or reader believe, what I myself invincibly do believe, that, although all the special manifestations of religion may have been absurd (I mean its creeds and theories), yet the life of it as a whole is mankind's most important function. A task well-nigh impossible, I fear, and in which I shall fail; but to attempt it is my religious act." (Pg. 187)He summarizes in a June 12, 1904 letter, "My philosophy is what I call a radical empiricism, a pluralism... which represents order as being gradually won and always in the making. It is theistic, but not ESSENTIALLY so. It rejects all doctrines of the Absolute. It is finitist; but it does not attribute to the question of the Infinite the great methodological importance which you and Renouvier attribute to it. I fear that you may find my system TOO bottomless and romantic..." (Pg. 205)He admits of his book Pragmatism, "It is a very `sincere' and, from the point of view of ordinary philosophy-professional manners, a very unconventional utterance, not particularly original at any one point, yet, in the midst of the literature of the way of thinking which it represents, with just that amount of squeak or shrillness in the voice that enables one book to TELL, when others don't, to supersede its brethren, and be treated later as `representative.' I shouldn't be surprised in ten years hence it should be rated as `epoch-making,' for of the definitive triumph of that general way of thinking I can entertain no doubt whatever---I believe it to be something quite like the protestant reformation." (Pg. 235)This judicious and well-edited collection of letters provides a highly insightful view of James the man, and of his views. It will be most valuable to anyone studying James and his ideas.

9 of 10 people found the following review helpful. Nice stickers but no educational value. Different from similar sticker books. By C. Miles The stickers are beautiful as usual with the DK 1000 sticker books. My son absolutely loves these books. Do note that this book is different from most of the Similar books. This book does not have the grey spaces telling you where to place the stickers. There are no words to read. This may be a great advantage to the young Star Wars fan, but I love the normal format of these books because they take my son a few hours to complete. This one will not take any time at all. The stickers are awesome though. He makes posters from the extra stickers. I just find this particular book has no educational value.

Excerpt from The Characters of Theophrastus: A Translation, With IntroductionThis translation of The Characters of Theophrastus is intended not for the narrow circle of classical philologists, but for the larger body of cultivated persons who have an interest in the past.Within the last century only three English translations of The Characters have appeared; one by Howell (London, 1824), another by Isaac Taylor (London, 1836), the third by Professor Jebb (London, 1870). All of these have long been out of print, a fact that seemed to justify the preparation of the present work.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Historical content great, technical reproduction terrible By James Long The book binding was good but the content was a poor enlarged Xerox (or similar) copy. Some of the reproduced pages were not positioned correctly, one page was cut off part way down, and one page was copied in the original small font. I originally ordered (from Amazon) a different English translation of "The Characters" and the book came in the original Greek, necessitating a return and refund -- unnecessary delay. If you are only interested in the content, this book is acceptable, but somewhat disconcerting when you expect a well-crafted quality product.

Recent published papers in the field of neurobiology and neuropsychology have dramatically changed our thinking about the avian brain and behavioral potential of birds, especially in the areas of learning, memory, plasticity, and in the cognitive and emotional domains. Bird Minds provides a fresh view of the behavior of Australian native avifauna, presenting a portrait of cognitive well-equipped species, which is somewhat removed from the traditional image of birds as fluttering, colorful ornaments that tend to move like automata. The book will focus on the specific abilities of Australian birds, examining why they have had to find – largely cognitive – ways of adapting to difficult conditions. The demands of the Australian environment have led to the development of cognitively complex processes that are unique in the world, including complex behaviors such as grieving, deception, problem solving and the use of tools. Many Australian birds cooperate and defend each other, and exceptional ones go fishing by throwing breadcrumbs in the water, extract poisonous parts from prey and use tools to crack open eggshells and mussels.

More powerful reasons we must learn to share this planet By Tony Smith How long does it take for birds to go from being a nice enough feature of the world we find ourselves in to being interesting for their behaviour? My own journey has been over 20 years and is still accelerating, hints of which are in my Vimeo collection: vimeo.com/channels/593799 Gisela Kaplan's journey has been 15 years and with academic rigour applied to "many breathtaking discoveries that have changed forever the landscape of our knowledge about animal cognition".Bird Minds builds an argument across Chapters 3-11 identifying behaviours which challenge the old paradigm that followed Descartes and Skinner of assumed human uniqueness, but is careful not to call out that old paradigm for the nonsense it has clearly become. At most Kaplan hints at where the evidence is taking us through willingness to put 'intelligence' in scare quotes. Only in an epilogue that follows broad assessments of target orders in the final chapter, is there a hint that there is a lot more to the story beyond this necessarily constrained setting out of recent revelations as they apply to the author's focus domain of Australian native birds. The opening chapter sets the background of recent identification that birds have reradiated from East Gondwana since the Cretaceous-Tertiary mass extinction, making Australia/Sahul the home of birds and base of bird diversification. The second chapter sets out the old paradigm presumptions which the subsequent evidence lays asunder, especially neurological quantifications embodying anthropocentric prejudices.I came to Bird Minds following Carl Safina's 2015 Beyond Words: What Animals Think and Feel which makes parallel claims for selected non-primate mammalian orders: elephants, wolves and Ornicus; and that from Robert G B Reid's 2007 Biological Emergences: Evolution by Natural Experiment (Vienna Series in Theoretical Biology) which sets out an alternate theoretical framing for animal evolution in which behavioural exploration precedes niche adaptation. Taken to its logical conclusion this would situate the origin of the general repertoire of bilateral animal behaviour back in the ninety million years between the collapse of Snowball Earth and the bilateral animal fossils of the Ediacaran. As Reid explains, there have been a few clear saltations since such as air breathing which opened new frontiers, but the essential complex behaviours needed to underpin feeding, breeding, recognition of kind and spatial mapping to allow movement, and more must have all been in place all along, alongside our shared developmental physiology that maintains integrity. While my own attention has been as much on water/shore birds as the parrots, corvids and songbirds which are the primary focus of Bird Minds, I finished reading and am writing this review having returned to this place evacuated Christmas Day while in sight of the Wye River fire where Kaplan's observations of magpies and kookaburras ring true loudly every day. Our ever loyal magpie couple, one living life to the full despite a long bad foot, clearly ran out of patience with one of the young squawking kookaburras and chased it out of camp, while the patient kookaburra parent keeps trying to teach them not just how to make a living but how to deliver the famous kookaburra laugh. Meanwhile the magpie songs enrich our visitor experience, as do many other avian species.Read Bird Minds so you have a lot more in mind when you see birds in the wild, be it in the bush or grassland, by stream or lake, at the beach or even in suburbia which many are recolonising. The most interesting behaviours are usually too quick to pull a camera out, so just watch and see that birds really do have minds of their own which are as competent at guiding their complex lives as ours are at surviving the industrially sterilised world of our own making.Science gets things right when it remains open to evidence. There never was a scientific basis for the presumption of human uniqueness. It was cultural prejudice writ large and not shared by even indigenous cultures. What is indisputably unique is in the collective via the division of labour on a scale only preceded by eusocial insects. We are organised animals with access to an explosive growth of knowledge, some of which is now undermining our anthropocentric comfort zone. That singing magpie and Bird Minds remind us that "bird brain" may be the most misplaced insult ever conceived.

By lyndonbrecht This is an outstanding read--for the right readers. It is rather heavy on science, quite up to date, although accessible to readers with some science backgrounds. It's obviously centered on Australian birds (and therefore mostly on Australian research, which appears vigorous). There is something of an axe to grind, as well; Kaplan sees many general conclusions about bird behaviors (such as cooperative behaviors and lifetime pair bonding) as based on what she calls high-latitude species (that is, European and American studies). That's assuming general patterns from studies that are somewhat limited in geographic scope. Many Australian species exhibit cooperative behavior, long-lasting pair bonding, and long lifespans (one cockatoo may live to 110). Kaplan also looks closely at tool use in birds, and notes that most research has been with crows.Readers who wish to cut to the essential information quickly could look at the tables. A long table in Appendix 1 lists hundreds of birds by several categories, including tool use--dozens of species use different tools in a variety of ways. This is discussed at length. Aside from the male palm cockatoo using sticks for drumming, there's an apparently credible report of black kites picking up smoldering fire sticks and dropping them to light fires and waiting for prey to be flushed out.Kaplan considers how Australia's geologic history has shaped Australian birds, including arid conditions, sporadic availability of food and isolation from other land masses. Many of the birds have wonderful names: the striated pardalote, grey-crowned babbler, spangled drongo, rufous whistler, willie wagtail. There's also some wonderful odd behavior. Banteng (from Southeast Asia, a population flourishing in Australia) approached by a Torresian crow rolling over with four feet in the air, so the bird can pick off ticks. And a bird apparently luring prey by calling, a sort of siren song.

Excerpt from French Traits: An Essay in Comparative CriticismThe apparent contrast between modern Frenchmen and the crusaders, between the "cafe-haunters" and the cathedral-builders, stimulates speculation as to whether the present interest of France is commensurate with her historic importance. The noblest monuments in the world attest the part she once played in the drama of civilization. Were Rheims and Amiens, Bourges and Beauvais, the embodied aspiration of the race whose activities one observes along the Paris boulevards to-day? Are there any signs in the actual Normandy of the spirit which dotted the North coast with the stone temples beside which their differentiation across the Channel seems often flimsy and superficial? Or, at the other end of France, as one descends the magnificent thoroughfare which consoles the Marseillais for the greater general splendor of Paris, does any lingering reminiscence reach one of the instinct which covered the Midi with the massive monuments of Provencal Romanesque? As one observes the audience which listens to Guignol, it seems fabulous that the Frank ever crossed the Rhine. As one notes the gayety, the bonhomie, the bright graciousness of a Parisian or provincial crowd, the Merovingian epoch seems a myth. Is there any traceable relationship between St. Remy at Rheims and St. Augustin at Paris, between St.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. A comical character, developed over the series. Easy read, the main character is a wanted man. He is pursued by a psychopathic law man. And Dalton is not really a wanted criminal.

Chesterton wrote a very fun introduction. However, the book bogs down a little at the beginning. If you can work your way through it, it shows how his fans of his time thought of him.

The second volume of Beyond Tonight: Hollywood Dreams, an Alpha Billionaire Romance series by CJ Thomas. I opened up and let him have a taste. I couldn’t push him out of my mind, and when he saved me for no real reason, taking me out of squalor and into his life of luxury, I wanted him even more. Sheila said I should do it. That there was something going on between us. I don’t know. Maybe she was right. The thing was, he had a girlfriend. And not just any girlfriend, Adrianna Eastman, maven of Hollywood. She was tall, smart, and gorgeous. The flippin’ world knew her by name. Even I did. But not like I knew her now. I was nothing next to Adrianna, and to think I was anything more than what he already had was just plain dumb. But what I learned about Adrianna might just give me the big break I needed and make him see me for more than a quick lay. Mature audience only. 18+ This story is planned to unfold over several stories and Vol. 2 ends on a cliffhanger.

I was so excited when I finished book 1, I could not wait to start book 2. Word of advice, go quick and read book 1, if you have not already done so. Then you will be all set for the rollercoaster of feelings that our heroine, Kami is embarking on. I can not reveal too much information, that would not be fair to you as a reader. I can say that Kami is confused about what Wesley Reid is after. Why is he being so nice to her. Why does he keep leaving her to be at Adrianna’s side. Are they a couple like the tabloids say? Or is really that rich, successful, so incredibly hot Wesley desires her and wants to claim her as his own. Also, has Kami really gotten over Marc? Has he really moved on like he said? In some ways Kami’s life is a mess, but in other ways she is living a dream. Let’s just hope it doesn’t become a nightmare. The writing style of this book takes you back and forth from the points of view of Kami and Wes. You as a reader know what they want. You know their thoughts as they happen. Too bad Kami and Wes can’t read the book to know what each other are thinking. Love this series, love this author. Can’t wait for more from C, J. Thomas. ARC Provided by C.J. Thomas. Honest review done by Mollien for Alpha Book Club without influence from publisher or author.

It's so hard to figure out too... Wesley likes a specific kind of relationship, Kami maybe wants what he does. But neither of them have disclosed to the other what it is they're wanting or looking for... This could be epic. Their interests are very much the same and could be CRAZY HOT! I can NOT wait to see where that goes... Adrianna has asked Kami to do her a favor, not super specific as to what the favor will entail, but I can NOT wait to see. I have a few guesses and I NEED to know if I'm correct! HAHA! Seriously, this isn't just another romance, C.J. seems to be able to write in a way that I haven't found before. It's VERY good and I'm excited to read more!!

It opens up and Kami is staying her 1st night at Wesley's beach house. We learn that Wesley has left Kami to run to rescue Adriana from her own demons. Wesley is a totally sweet guy that constantly is doing something for someone that needs help. When Adriana comes to Kami to ask for her help in protecting Wesley that was touching that she cared enough for Wesley to try to make sure he's taken care of. I don't want to give away to much so I will stop now but its a total pantie dripping book also and C. J. did an awesome job I can't wait to read volume 3 just to see what happens next.
