This new resource provides a coherent, intuitive, and theoretical foundation for the fusion and exploitation of traditional sensor data as well as text-based information. In addition to presenting a detailed discussion of base-level data fusion requirements, a variety of higher level exploitation algorithms are presented that perform fully automated relationship discovery, rank interest level of entities, and support context-sensitive behavior understanding (both static and dynamic context). This book identifies eight canonical fusion forms as well as twenty foundational fusion services to enable formal mapping between models and services. Normalization and representation processes for (hard) sensor data and (soft) semantic data are described as well as methods for combining hard and soft data.

Data Fusion Support to Activity-Based Intelligence (The Artech House Intelligence and Information Operations Series), by Richard T. Antony

Review Having worked with Richard Antony in various task contexts over a number of years, I am not surprised that this book provides an extremely clear and detailed descriptive review of concepts, methods, and issues related to the design of modern Data Fusion processes. Several years ago, with the domain of Data Fusion technologies having started in the 1980 s, researchers in the field considered the field maturing . Experience however has shown that both the problem domains that Data Fusion methods address and the multidisciplinary technologies that Data Fusion methods are grounded in have continued to evolve at a Moore s Law type of pace, and have required that Data Fusion researchers and developers continue to evolve and adapt their basic design and development guidelines. In the face of this dynamic environment, this book does a great job of developing fresh new insights into these R&D challenges. --Dr. James Llinas, Professor (Emeritus), Founder and Director (Emeritus), Center for Multisource Information Fusion, State University of New York at BuffaloI cannot recommend this book highly enough; Fusion is an immature discipline and there have been several important books on the topic over the years. However, this one truly breaks new ground establishing new foundational theories for how we can deal with and combine soft data and information such as text and HUMAN reports with traditional measurements also known as hard data. These new concepts are coupled with the practicality of system capabilities and functioning prototypes based on the new theoretical foundations. The book provides truly unique and workable series of fusion services which going forward will be a great benefit to practitioners and developers who need them in their daily jobs and in the development of systems to support the analysts and decision makers. Further, because it is so accessible and readable many of the generalists and analysts who may have been frightened off by the dense mathematical nature of so many fusion tomes can gain much from this book. I recommend this book to all specialists but also to a much broader audience who can benefit from the seminal work presented in its pages. --Franklin E. White, Contract Engineer, MITRE Corp.Richard Antony's new book on Data Fusion Support to Activity-Based Intelligence is a welcome addition to the data fusion literature. Antony, well known for his contributions to multi-sensor data fusion, and author of the 1995 text, Principles of Data Fusion Automation, is a clear domain expert regarding data, inferences, decision processes, and utilization of data fusion systems for military applications. While a number of existing texts provide details on target tracking, signal processing, pattern recognition and data fusion mathematics and algorithms, virtually none exhibit the domain expertise provided by Antony. Antony s previous text set the stage for development of automated processes for information fusion by identifying key types of information and knowledge needed for situation awareness and threat refinement. The new text provides further insight into these areas, particularly as they apply to the modern challenge of activity based intelligence (ABI). Antony describes the foundational information theory of ABI including the fundamental types of data, inferences sought, reasoning logic, and the mapping from sensor data to semantic level representations of situations. The book introduces a prototype system for context and fusion support and uses this prototype to explore high level reasoning and special functions such as high value entity discovery, exploring the characteristics and relationships between complex entities and the development of special information filters and alert functions. The book illustrates clearly the value of linking physical sensor data with human observations and context-based knowledge. His two chapters on spatial reasoning and temporal reasoning are of special value. Overall, I would strongly recommend this clearly written and insightful text. --David L. Hall, College of Information Sciences and Technology, The Pennsylvania State University

About the Author Richard Antony is a retired Chief Scientist formally of Leidos Corporation and VSG. He received both BS and MS degrees in Electrical Engineering from the University of Maryland. In today’s information-overload society, it is crucial that we have tools that can be used to make sense of the endless stream of both hard and soft data that is available. Mr. Antony provides us with just that, a way to learn the relationships among different entities in intelligence messages. He creatively utilizes several unclassified scenarios and accompanying messages of criminal and terrorist activities to illustrate his argument regarding the value of text-based information for developing Intel exploitation systems. His many tables and figures are quite impressive and demonstrate the careful thought and analysis that went into the writing of this book. I highly recommend Data Fusion Support to Activity-Based Intelligence for students, scholars, and intelligence professionals.

The subject of the present volume, namely the differently formed flowers normally produced by certain kinds of plants, either on the same stock or on distinct stocks, ought to have been treated by a professed botanist, to which distinction I can lay no claim. As far as the sexual relations of flowers are concerned, Linnaeus long ago divided them into hermaphrodite, monoecious, dioecious, and polygamous species. This fundamental distinction, with the aid of several subdivisions in each of the four classes, will serve my purpose; but the classification is artificial, and the groups often pass into one another.

--- Charles Darwin

About the Author Charles Darwin was an English naturalist and author best-known for his revolutionary theories on the origin of species, human evolution, and natural selection. A life-long interest in the natural world led Darwin to neglect his medical studies and instead embark on a five-year scientific voyage on the HMS Beagle, where he established his reputation as a geologist and gathered much of the evidence that fuelled his later theories.A prolific writer, Darwin s most famous published works include The Voyage of the Beagle, On the Origin of Species, The Descent of Man, and Selection in Relation to Sex, and The Expression of Emotions in Man and Animals. Darwin died in 1882, and in recognition of his contributions to science, is buried in Westminster Abbey along with John Herschel and Isaac Newton.

It seems to be the entire work as I remember from University, but I found the lack of Table of Contents to make this a hard read.I like to jump around from similar flower and plant species to other species that I assume were similar in form and function. This book seemed to lack an easy way for me to do that. Other readers might find this not a problem, but it held me back slightly.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Informative book. Very scientific in language, though By Marissa Charles Darwin's book about different plants on the same species will engage any horticulturist botanist, or plant-lover alike. Definitely a must read if you are well-read when it comes to plants. The book wasn't accessible for me, as a reader, just because of all the scientific plant names/jargon.

At 59 I'm Considering LOL By CC I'm 59 years old and I think I look okay but . . . and there is that but, I was toying with or am toying with the idea of a descreet nip and tuck here and there. I had no clue what so ever where to begin so being the bookworm I am I gravitated to Amazon and of course found this little gem of book. First of all I have been to a few consulting appointments with Plastic Surgeons but they are moving people in and out like a meat grinder. Not that Author Migan professes to be a surgeon but the way all the information is broken down this author could play one on TV. Seriously great information dispensed in all the areas I was speifically looking at which are I've learned what most people my age look at, or the Author is can read minds of the majority of aging wormen.I learned a lot and feel like now I'm ready to go to a consult with a Plastic Surgeon and leave with more than confusion and fear worth the time to read well written and formatted. If you are considering exploring the option read the book and then go explore you will be ahead of the game. Getting more Bang for your Buck under the knife.

This isn’t about trying to sell you a consultation or even that you should go out and have plastic surgery. It is just a really nice introduction to a better understanding of cosmetic surgery. It’s hard to believe that its history goes back so far. The author does a wonderful job sharing some truly remarkable stories and peppering them with a lot of facts and figures. I liked that it took a smart approach to the advantages and side effects of the procedures discussed. The chapter on what happens after your surgery was nice and complete, going over some of the physical as well as psychological effects that are possible. Even had some advice on alternatives, a great read for anyone looking into this.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. About plastic surgery By Brianna Plastic surgery in the 21st century is definitely a branch of medicine that has evolved significantly. The technology and progress made in this area made it possible for people to have a choice in choosing their appearance. Being it a choice by desire or need, I do believe that understanding the implications of a plastic surgery is very important for any patient desiring to try this out. A set of medical terms and implications that come together with plastic surgery are made easy to understand within this book. Crisp and to the point, highlighting the essentials I do believe this is a must read for anyone considering plastic surgery. A good informative book.

THE chief object of the present work is to describe and connect together several large classes of movement, common to almost all plants. The most widely prevalent movement is essentially of the same nature as that of the stem of a climbing plant, which bends successively to all points of the compass, so that the tip revolves. This movement has been called by Sachs "revolving nutation;" but we have found it much more convenient to use the terms circumnutation and circumnutate.

Review

“Are they needed? To be sure. The Darwinian industry, industrious though it is, has failed to provide texts of more than a handful of Darwin's books. If you want to know what Darwin said about barnacles (still an essential reference to cirripedists, apart from any historical importance) you are forced to search shelves, or wait while someone does it for you; some have been in print for a century; various reprints have appeared and since vanished.”-Eric Korn,Times Literary Supplement

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Where the hell has this author been hiding? By robbie m hyman It's not easy to find a horror story that's both an original, fun tale... and at the same time serves as a morality play that isn't the least bit heavy handed. Somehow, though, with "Dark at the End of the Tunnel," Taylor Grant has managed to write a book filled with them! Where the hell did this guy come from?Every entry in the "Dark" anthology works beautifully on its own merits as a short story, but also has a lot to say about some larger themes in life -- all without ever spending a moment making any of those larger themes feel like "A Very Important Lesson We Should Learn From." Grant is obviously too smart for that. And... a big bonus for the reader: He also trusts that we're too smart for that.Case in point: The Vood, one of my favorite stories here.We realize pretty early on in this story that we don't have a firm handle on even the most basic elements of the plot: The protagonist could be either good or bad. The plot might be unfolding exactly as we're reading it, or it might be a hallucination of one of the characters. And it could clearly end in many ways -- each one completely logical, depending. The story does have a surprise ending, yes, but that doesn't mean the reader is certain of one reality throughout the story right up until the end; to the contrary, we're constantly weighing the different possible realities and judging each new piece of evidence against those possibilities. This makes the story a lot of fun. But even as we're enjoying this great yarn unfold, we're also reading a Taylor Grant morality play -- without necessarily even realizing it until we're done. Every story in this collection is a great ride in its own right, but also filled with some of life's great truths. Not sure why Taylor Grant has been keeping his horror-writing talents a secret -- but I'm glad he's finally sharing them with us.

Review from The Horror Zine By Jeani Rector I first became aware of Taylor Grant in 2012 when he submitted a story titled “Masks” for The Horror Zine anthology A Feast of Frights. I remember thinking, “This story is a standout.” So imagine my pleasure when I opened his new fiction collection titled The Dark at the End of the Tunnel and realized that “Masks” is the first story in the book.“Masks” begins innocently enough, a regular guy shaving in the bathroom. He could be anyone. That’s the beauty of this story; it could be you or me who is frustrated with his wife, his job, and his life. But Taylor Grant performs a feat that I have only seen created this well with such writers as Ramsey Campbell and Bentley Little: a normal guy is suddenly thrust into abnormal circumstances, and there is no turning back. The twist in “Masks” is that the abnormality comes from within. The ending is a delicious surprise that I didn’t see coming. And that is hard to do, to surprise someone like me who sees horror stories every day as an editor of a horror magazine. Yet Taylor Grant did just that, not once but throughout this book.Which brings me to the second story. I want to spend some time discussing “The Silent Ones” because believe it or not, it is even better than “Masks.” In fact, “the Silent Ones” is my favorite story of the entire book. Trust me here, I am not exaggerating when I say this is one of the most effectively written stories I have ever read. I liken it to a cross between the passionate weirdness of Edgar Allan Poe to the “outside the box” of Stephen King. This one would make a wonderful film, except there would need to be really good special effects to capture the horrifying turn of events. I believe this story is brilliant, and more fiction like this could easily catapult Grant to best-seller fame.“The Silent Ones” is disturbing on a level that is unforgettable. All at the same time, emotions such as pity and understanding for the character, and alarm for what becomes of him are brought to the surface by Grant’s superb writing ability. How many of us sometimes feel alone and unnoticed in a world of 7 billion people? But it gets worse for this character…he disintegrates, literally, in a shocking manner. I cannot praise “The Silent Ones” enough for its extreme psychological terror. Now we move on to “The Infected.” Again Grant writes with such great character development that it feels personal. A man is grieving at his father’s death and rediscovers a footlocker that he hadn’t seen since he was eight. Of course it is a Pandora’s box, but Grant delivers demons that even poor Pandora didn’t see coming. There is a tantalizingly-named story “Whispers in the Trees, Screams in the Dark” that delivers a primeval fear of unseen things in the deep woods. This one is a masterpiece of suspense, delivering moment-by-moment events as they occur. Exciting stuff.Grant saved the book’s name-sake for last: “The Dark at the End of the Tunnel.” In this, a book of spells and a nameless demon takes us on dark adventures through time. Now I want to talk about Taylor Grant. Having worked with him on “Masks,” I know he is devoted to his craft and takes his time with everything he writes. It shows in the final products. But he is also a multi-talented individual, because besides authoring this truly outstanding fiction collection, Grant is also a screenwriter, actor, graphic novel writer, and filmmaker.I rarely gush about a particular writer, because I see so many good ones with what I do. However, I want to take this opportunity to gush about Taylor Grant.Give yourself a remarkable experience and buy The Dark at the End of the Tunnel. As an added attraction, it contains a foreword by the esteemed Gene O’Neill. The whole book is really good, but the standouts such as “The Silent Ones” will last with you probably forever. When Taylor Grant becomes a household name (and that is already starting), you will nod your head sagely and say “I knew about him before…”

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Stunning Debut Collection By Brian Fatah Steele Taylor Grant has given us a stunning debut collection with THE DARK AT THE END OF THE TUNNEL one that would be well-received by any horror fiction aficionado. He weaves tales with a strong voice, tackling subjects that he makes all his own. Flavors of madness permeate throughout his work, somehow alluring, somehow drawing you in.Grant defy dances around topics, from loneness rendering a person unable to interact with the material world in “The Silent Ones,” to a paralyzing fear of devouring monsters that live in the shadows as seen in “The Vood.” Vampires are reimagined in the far future with tragic consequences in “Gods and Devils,” while a young boy describes the horrors at home to his school counselor in “Show and Tell.” In my favorite story in the collection, “Intruders,” a psychic virus propagated by extra-dimensional entities manifests as violent schizophrenia, the first possible stage in an invasion. Five more excellent stories round out this collection, all equally impressive. With his background as a screenwriter, Grant brings a certain vitality to his words, these works jumping to life in your imagination. They are dark yet vivid, the characters and situations believable. Grant’s acclaim will only grow as more people read this collection and he releases more work.

From the Caldecott Medal-winning creator of The Invention of Hugo Cabret and Wonderstruck comes a breathtaking new voyage. In this magnificent reimagining of the form he originated, two stand-alone stories--the first in nearly 400 pages of continuous pictures, the second in prose--create a beguiling narrative puzzle. The journey begins at sea in 1766, with a boy named Billy Marvel. After surviving a shipwreck, he finds work in a London theatre. There, his family flourishes for generations as brilliant actors until 1900, when young Leontes Marvel is banished from the stage.Nearly a century later, runaway Joseph Jervis seeks refuge with an uncle in London. Albert Nightingale's strange, beautiful house, with its mysterious portraits and ghostly presences, captivates Joseph and leads him on a search for clues about the house, his family, and the past.A gripping adventure and an intriguing mystery The Marvels is a loving tribute to the power of story.

The Marvels, by Brian Selznick

From School Library Journal Gr 4–6—This brilliant journey through time in words and pictures is also a story of a theatrical family and their fortunes. This heavy tome opens to tell of one family, the Marvels, from 1766 to 1900 as their connection to the Royal Theatre in London begins and perhaps ends. In the first half of the book, all of this complex history is vividly conveyed through illustrations, with minor hints from playbills, cards, and letters that appear as part of the art. Selznick's ability to convey the passing of time and connections among characters is remarkable. Characters appear, shine, and disappear throughout the years, but certain motifs recur no matter where the spotlight is focused. The second portion of the story is conveyed entirely in text, building on the same themes but taking place in 1990 in a very different London, where the echoes from the past are particularly embodied in 13-year-old Joseph, a boarding school runaway searching for his uncle's house. He soon meets Uncle Albert, who seems less interested in getting to know his nephew than in the preservation of an anachronistic Victorian house which is more museum than home. The echoes from the earlier history are haunting, requiring Joseph to delve into the secrets of Uncle Albert and of the house without giving away his own. Selznick ends with a satisfying section of illustrations that embody the maxim of this family, "You either see it or you don't." VERDICT Complex, entertaining, and full of gorgeous art and writing, this is a powerhouse of a book.—Carol A. Edwards, Denver Public Library, CO

I can't remember the last time a book left me speechless. I love Brain Selznick's books and "The Marvels" may be his best. Selznick weaves together the story of the Marvels and the story of Joseph, a runaway, using both illustrations and a standard narrative. But nothing and I mean nothing is as it seems. You think the pictures tell one story only to find a whole other story has framed it. You think Joseph moving in with his uncle will be a typical ghost story, only to find it anything but typical and not ghostly at all, though maybe still haunting. Ultimately "The Marvels" is a love story, an unexpected love story that is somehow both subtle and grand, fantastic and wild and, in the end, perfectly normal and beautiful. Breathtaking. What a journey Selznick takes us on.

Gorgeous artwork with controversial themes that might require more active parental involvement By Z Hayes My ten-year-old daughter and I enjoyed reading this book together over the course of several days. We are both great fans of Brian Selznick's previous novels, THE ADVENTURES OF HUGO CABRET and WONDERSTRUCK, and were eager to discover the delights of his latest offering. The first half of the book which traces the history of a particular clan over several centuries, was particularly beguiling as the story unfolded via nothing but Mr. Selznick's amazing drawings. This is a great method of storytelling, especially as it invites readers to delve into the story even deeper and try to uncover the various themes underlying the narrative. The second part is all words and at times, felt a bit of a drudge to get through. I am thinking of my young students who would have loved the first part but getting antsy and rather impatient for the story to move along during this second part of the novel. I feel this part of the novel could have benefited from some editing. However, as several other reviewers have mentioned - parents and educators need to be aware that there are topics in this book that are not quite appropriate for younger readers, elementary-middle school, and should be approached with caution.I liked the book and had a positive discussion with my daughter about the contents but am uncomfortable at having that same discussion with impressionable young students, as some parents will not be comfortable with such content. So final verdict: gorgeous artwork and compelling (if at times plodding storyline) with controversial themes that might require more active parental involvement.

By Amazon Customer To be honest, this is the first book I've read by Brian Selznick, so I wasn't very familiar with his work and wasn't going into this book with neither high nor low expectations. I just watched a review about it on YouTube and the way the YouTuber expressed his feelings over it really got me curious enough to check it out.The excerpt, which is the Amazon sample, I only glanced at, but the dialogue between Frankie and Joseph was was drew me in even more. When it arrived (a day early, by the way - thank you, Amazon), I tore the box open and, at first, I just started at the cover/dust jacket for a few minutes. It's a lot prettier than it looks on the picture. Then, after I got over that, I began my adventure through the Marvels.I read everything in less than 12 hours (with constant interruptions, and at one point I had to go out shopping) because I just couldn't have it out of my sight for too long. I just had to know what happened and how everything clicked together.I have to say, the ending blew my mind. As I was reading along, I was coming up with theories as to what was going on, and never did the actual twist come to mind.At the end, I was very devastated. I didn't want the adventure to end, but it did.It was a beautiful adventure, though. It's been such a long time since a book has left me feeling all heartbroken but full of joy all at once. This has become a new favorite for sure. Now, I'm aware of some negative comments this book has been receiving and... I've got some things to say about it.1) The homosexuality is barely even there! It doesn't even focus on it at all.2) As an aspiring author, I find it very rude for people to point out what they think are "flaws" in the story, especially when it's something like this. This is how life is NOW, you can't shelter your children from the knowledge that gay people exist. Stop spreading homophobia; it's not healthy.3) AIDS is indeed mentioned, but it's doesn't even go into detail as to how it's contracted. I was talking about the topic with my fiance, and his little brother (he's eleven) was listening. Even he said, "That's stupid that people are complaining about that being in a book. It's just a disease you die from." Kids aren't stupid, and they SHOULD know what's out there. Plus, they go on the internet. You think they haven't read "AIDS" anywhere else?Ridiculous. All in all, most of these negative comments didn't even make sense to me after I read it all.

The authors contributions to joke telling style and technique also makes you think. Of coarse there are different kinds of humor, delivery, and talents! Not everyone will laugh at the same thing. I read several of these to my wife and we couldn't stop laughing. Some made us laugh out loud and some we laughed quietly inside. All of it was amusing.

Grackles are large, elegant, gregarious birds that migrate to warmer climates in the winter. They can be noisy, even screechy, and always possessive of their territory. They are larger than blackbirds and smaller than crows. The adults have eyes with a yellow ring and beautiful iridescent feathers.

The author had an excellent camera with (presumably) a lot of patience to get the Grackles in a wide array of poses. For a "birder" it would be compelling.Unfortunately, it is only available as an e-book and the absence of any text (at least in my e-book) reduces its effect. If would have been fascinating to have had the author provide some background for specific shots and some commentary regarding the Grackles.

Review

AT THE HEART OF MOLECULAR BIOLOGY

Nucleic acids in chemistry and biology

Michael Blackburn, Michael Gait, David Loakes and David Williams (eds)Cambridge, UK: The Royal Society of Chemistry | 2006 | 470pp | ISBN 9780854046546

Reviewed by Richard Bowater

Through the DNA double helix, the structures of nucleic acids touch the scientific consciousness of scientists involved in many aspects of contemporary biological science. One reason for the iconic nature of this structure is the elegant explanations it provides for DNA metabolism. This clear biological relevance means that it can be easy to forget that these cellular processes are driven by basic chemical principles. The same laws of chemistry also apply to other forms of nucleic acids, such as RNA, though the biological functions of different classes of these molecules are extremely diverse. This book provides an excellent reminder of how studies into the basic chemistry of these various molecules have helped the understanding of their biological functions.

The earlier two editions of this book (published by Oxford University Press) earned respect through their authoritative style, and this new edition from the RSC retains the successful format. It is 10 years since the previous edition, and research into nucleic acids has been particularly active during that time.

The book contains a useful glossary of nucleic acid terminology, many useful references for further reading and figures to aid understanding of the principles under discussion. Good aspects from the previous edition are retained, including the introductory short historical overview of biological and chemical studies of nucleic acids. Three chapters cover the use of nucleic acids in biotechnology; genes and genomes; and RNA structure and function. It is these chapters that highlight the recent massive impact of this topic on biology and biotechnology, noticeably through the publication of large numbers of genome sequences and the recognition that RNA has many diverse functions within cells. Chemical aspects of nucleic acids come to the fore in the last third of the book, with description of interactions of small molecules with nucleic acids, protein-nucleic acid interactions and techniques used to analyse nucleic acids.

In summary, this book provides an excellent overview of the chemistry and biology of nucleic acids, at a level that is suitable for use in university teaching, but with enough detail to be useful as a reference source for chemists, biochemists and biologists involved in current research of nucleic acids.

About the Author DAVID WILLIAMS is the Price Waterhouse Professor of International Business Taxation at Queen Mary and Westfield College, University of London.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. An outstanding textbook By Hongyi Wang As the title indicates, the book has broad coverage of many facets of nucleic acids. It serves well as a textbook by introducing basic materials in a larger scope other than in depth. Some critics may address the issue that there are not enough details in some chapters, for example, Chapter 11, where physical methods are summarized. It can be argued, however, that its role as a textbook does not allow or need such details. The references should fill the gap given the fact that the students should have chemistry and biology background and be able to read further references. The glossary at the beginning is well organized for students to adopt the terminology. The subject index gives enough details for easy searching. The contents are rich in information. The references are very much up-to-date and carefully selected to reflect their impact in the fields. The colored figures are very well designed and deliver on the point. The bold font of some text gives a strange untidy impression. The titles may have gone unnecessarily too far in levels, for example: 4.2.1.2.2. The color of those titles takes some neatness away from the pages. The authors / publisher maintain a good website where corrections are made to the book. The book covers the chemistry of nucleic acids and its components impressively well in different chapters. It will help readers to get a sound understanding of the chemistry, its implications, consequences and applications. The typical synthetic methods of nucleoside, nucleotide and oligonucleotide analogues are presented clearly with appropriate examples. Nicely covered are also the chemical properties and reactions of these species and nucleic acids. The biotechnology and genomic science are delivered in a very readable way even for a chemist. Very often there are chemical principles behind these applications: DNA sequencing, drug binding to DNA, DNA-protein interaction, DNA intercalation, and many, many more.Overall this is an outstanding textbook for graduate students as well as industrial researchers. It almost exclusively outlines the science of nucleic acids with good references from which interested readers can further their readings.

Would make a good undergrad book if that was what it was intended to be used for. As a grad level or above, a new addition is in order.

There are few for whom the observable universe fails to inspire a profound sense of wonder. It would be fair to say that learning about the universe and its component parts still has the power to produce childlike excitement no matter the age of the student. How truly amazing it is to live in a time in which, not only can scientists propose theory but, in many instances they can collect data and test those theories. Ultimately, this data should help shed some light on whether this highly ordered, seemingly purposeful creation requires force of will or materialized simply by chance. This short book takes a look at some of the marvelous design work evident in nature, the complexity of the human mind, and a brief look at the historical origin of Christianity with the intent of revealing a mysterious but compelling connection.

I read it in one day, because the chapters are brief and keep you interested and wanting more. The book feeds your intellect and is also inspiring! I enjoyed the references to science, engineering, and theology. It is a reminder of how lucky we are to have minds and bodies to think about what a beautiful and complex world we live in due to a divine Creator.

Beauty AND Brains behind a presidential election By 2theD Novelette: "Hail to the Chief"Penname: Janat Argo and Sam ArgoFirst published: February 1962Publication: AnalogOriginal length: 31 pagesIllustrations: SchoenherrWord count: ≈ 12,690 wordsAvailable for FREE on Project Gutenberg"'Hey!' Cannnon yelled good-naturedly. `Any more slaps on the back and I'm going to be the first President since Franklin Roosevelt to go to my Inauguration in a wheelchair.'" (18-19)Senator James Harrington Cannon is unanimously chosen to be the next President-elect. Where "image" is important, Senator Cannon is the face of the campaign but he chooses Matthew Fischer as running mate and Vice President-elect. Once a State Attorney General, Fischer seems like an odd choice for a running mate, but Cannon stands behind his selection with conviction. Cannon is reassured of his choice when he receives word that an experimental American spacecraft had been shot down near the Russian moon base, a situation which is handled by the keen intelligence, natural tact, and effortless decision-making of Matthew Fischer. The resulting victory of decision by Fischer vaults the running mates into a victory over a televised debate with the current President. When Election Day dawns, the votes flood in for Cannon and Fischer, a situation which any President-elect could ever wish for, for Cannon has higher plans for his tenure and for his country. This novelette has a very non-sci-fi feel to it, only lapsing into the realm of science when the situation on the moon in involved, a situation which highlights Fischer's unique talent but a situation which could have easily have been something terrestrial of origin and non-scientific. It's more of a story of a Presidential-hopeful's idea of what makes a good campaign, what makes a good running mate, and what makes a positive influence on American progress. The unfolding conclusion is surprising, conniving, and touching, which is also sown with the seed of speculative fiction more than the steady foundation of fiction; one can only wish for politics to be so humanistic.

A presidential candidate like all the others. A vice presidential candidate like no other. If you would like to spend a week or two in the sixties. I would recommend you select a cross section of Garett's (pseudonyms included) works read them at a run but read them thoroughly, oh preferable late at night and viola there you are! Have fun it was a great time in science fiction.
