The ending left me frantically gliding my finger across my iPad looking for the rest of it! Which, with that being said, your mission was accomplished! :) I gave it 5 stars because not only was it a GREAT read, it made me want to go and re read Ain't Nobody - the sequel of this book! And in the words of Adrienne... "Marketing!" Touche ma'am... Touche! Not mad at you at all, just Victor for not talking to you more! lol

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Victor! By Barbara Joe Williams Victor! Victor! Victor! That's what the women call him and now I understand why. Ms. Thompson took us back to the beginning of Victor's humble life and walked us through the gorgeous city until we reached the point of where he became a certified Gigolo. Not only did I feel like I was in beautiful Brazil, but I felt like I knew Victor and his family personally. That's just how good the writing was. When an author has the ability to transport you to a different place and time, she's really done her job! I'm not trying to give away the story line but suffice it to say, if you loved Ain't Nobody, you won't be disappointed with this one either. But you will be screaming, "Victor! Victor! Victor!"Thank you, Adrienne, for another great read filled with many twists, turns, and surprises! I can't think of one thing that you could add or subtract to make the story better. So as long as you're a writer, I'll be a reader!Barbara Joe Williams, author of Love Never Felt So Good!

It was enlightening to get an insight how Victor ended up in the "business". Every one has a past. Every one has reasons they are the way they are. Such is life.At any rate, u the bomb.com Ms Adrienne!I am a beta reader for Ms Adrienne, and was asked to give my honest opinion of this book.

Jacob is a soldier in a war against a new type of enemy. Trained in the basics of ground combat and tossed a weapon, he is now on the front lines of the global conflict. He must face the Delta Horde or risk his families eviction to the refugee camps. Inexperienced, Jacob discovers he has something far more valuable than weapons and armor, his fellow soldiers at his side. As a team, they struggle to survive battles and an enemy that would ruin a man standing against them alone. Only together can they find a way to end the reign of The Darkness. This is a novel of horror, courage, and resiliency in the face of an unspeakable enemy.

The Shadows: The Invasion Trilogy Book 2, by W.J. Lundy

Review "The Darkness is like an air raid siren that won't shut off; thrilling and downright horrifying!" Nicholas Sansbury Smith, Best Selling Author of Orbs and The Extinction Cycle."Absolutely amazing. This story hooked me from the first page and didn't let up. I read the story in one sitting and now I am desperate for more. ...Mr. Lundy has definitely broken new ground with this tale of humanity, sacrifice and love of family ... In short, read this book."  William Allen, Author of Walking in the Rain. "First book I've pre-ordered before it was published. Well done story of survival with a relentless pace, great action, and characters I cared about! Some scenes are still in my head!"  Stephen A. North, Author of Dead Tide and The Drifter.

From the Author The Darkness Series is an Alien/Zombie hybrid tale of horror. I have big things in mind for this series. The tone really hardens in the second book The Shadows. The setup has been laid down with TD and it is time to really let things go wild in TS. If you like Body Snatchers with a mix of Battle of Los Angeles I think you will dig this trilogy. It is a fast developing Science fiction horror tale with some hard hitting guerrilla warfare dropped on top.    -WJL

About the Author W. J. Lundy is a still serving Veteran of the  U.S. Military with service in Afghanistan.  He has over 15 years of combined service with the Army and Navy in Europe, the Balkans and Southwest Asia.  W.J. is an avid athlete, writer, backpacker and shooting enthusiast.  He currently resides with his wife and daughter in Central Michigan.facebook.com/WARONPRIMALSwjlundy.wtf@gmail.com

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. ~~Mission to Middleville, MI~~ By Off Grid..and Loving it! Attempting to ensure his family's safety, Jacob volunteers in the new global army. The training time has been sliced to two weeks and covers the bare minimum needed to stay alive fighting the Delta Horde or the Darkness as some call them. If Jacob fails this short intense training, the entire family will have to be moved into a refuge camp. MSGT Masterson, the Drill Sergeant in charge whips them into shape the best that he can with the time allowed. Typical of boot camp, chaos becomes routine with repetition. The story begins at the Global Joint Base and it is Day of the Darkness Plus 90.The Deltas are continuing to evolve and they appear to be making conscious decisions. They are able to handle weapons and march in a column. Pretty scary thought to envision these Deltas starting to think and move in a cohesive manner. The descriptions of the Deltas are superb! This book is filled with action from the first page until the last. Lots of tactics involved and weapons abound throughout the story. Duke the Lab is a welcome addition to the team and can sniff the Deltas out in a hurry! I like the fact that the author uses a generous dose of humor to break up the tense moments. I had to laugh when a bandana was put on Duke's nose to protect it. In addition to Jacob one of my favorite characters was Stone and his background. He certainly could wield a mean weapon even at his age and despite his illness. The mission to Middleville, MI is absolutely incredible. Lives are lost but the ultimate prize is gained. It reminded me of the opening battle scene when the smell of cordite and burning flesh filled the air.All in all, a most exciting read which won't disappoint the reader. Lots of action, team work is one of the key ingredients throughout and characters are well developed. Most highly recommended. This book was borrowed under the Kindle Unlimited Program.

This one, The Shadows, is a freight train as a shadow falls across the world. From an abbreviated boot camp and right into the thick of things, we follow Jacob as he fights for his life and the lives of his fellow warriors as he learns to "embrace the suck." This book is filled with little patches of sunlight and even a little humor even as the Darkness gathers closer to Jacob and everything he holds dear.Jacob is a perfect point of view character as he is in turns bewildered and horrified by what his world has become, but he stands his ground and does what is necessary to survive. The supporting characters are superb, and the author does a wonderful job of making them real and relevant in a short period of time. These become folks you can care about, and I became invested in their wellbeing.I thoroughly enjoyed this book and now I cannot wait for the next in the series. Would earn six stars if I could manage it. Bravo, Mr. Lundy.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Awesome Action-Packed sequel to The Darkness By Kelly Joseph Excellent follow-up to The Darkness. With the first book, we learned through the course of the story about the enemy our heroes are dealing with. They are evolving! The Shadows starts with a bang and doesn't let up. Jacob has come full-circle since we've seen him and pretty much has to in this 'new world'. I never like to give spoilers in my reviews so I'll keep it vague. We meet a few new characters in The Shadows (including an unsuspected canine hero) and they add richness to the story. The tactics are very well narrated by the author. He obviously knows his stuff. Gun guys/ military guys you won't be seeing the annoying nuances like "the safety on the revolver" or "racked the pump on the AR47" in this book. Great action and characters that you can actually care about (or wish they die). The end of the book leaves us with an "Oh S***" thought, and we'll have to wait for the next book to see what happens! The Invasion Trilogy is turning out to be a hell of a fun ride. Keep up the good work Mr. Lundy.

So we got him this book and he loves to read it with us. The book doesn't really follow the story of the movie rather it has a character on each page with a colored or simple background and some text describing the character. (Snoopy and Charlie Brown have several pages dedicated to them.) The characters are in the 3D animated style from the movie. Many of the backgrounds are plain so there isn't as much opportunity for vocabulary development besides describing the clothes, expressions, and features of the characters. The descriptions do have connections to elements from the film. Such as kite flying, the little red-haired girl, or snoopy Fifi and the red baron. Overall it is a great book that does just what the title suggests--an introduction to Snoopy and Friends. While I was expecting a book that followed the story of the movie I am still happy with the book and my son seems to really enjoy it. There is another Peanuts movie book that appears to follow the story called A Friend indeed that I will have to checkout.

Our younger folks have enjoyed having this golden book. I confess also to liking it quite a lot. Snoopy and Charlie and Lucy and all of the gang just make me feel good. The movie was great, too. This one goes into my personal golden book collection that I will carefully share with my great-grandchildren. I love me some Snoopy!!

Excerpt from History of French Literature in the Eighteenth CenturyThe work, of which a translation is here presented to the Public, has some of the disadvantages of a posthumous publication. It is the substance of a course of Lectures prepared for delivery during the summer of 1846; however, when the author was about the middle of his Lectures on the character and writings of J. J. Rousseau, he was arrested by a mortal distemper, under which lie sunk, after a few months' illness. In these circumstances, the final revision of the author was impossible; but it must also be added, that M. Vinet did not write his Lectures. He seems to have had great power in extempore address, and usually spoke from notes, suggesting the progress of thought, felicitous epithets, and passages for quotation. These notes form the basis of this work, and the French editors carefully compared them with the note-books of four of the pupils, who attended this course so far as it was continued.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Lectures On Rhetoric And Belles Lettres, by Hugh Blair

From the Publisher This new edition of Hugh Blair's Lectures on Rhetoric and Belles Lettres, edited by Linda Ferreira-Buckley and S. Michael Halloran, answers the need for a complete, reliable text.

Although the extent of its influence cannot be measured fully, Blair's Lectures on Rhetoric and Belles Lettres was undoubtedly a primary vehicle for introducing many eighteenth- and nineteenth-century scholars to classical rhetoric and French belletristic rhetoric-its success due in part to the ease with which the lectures combine neoclassical and Enlightenment thought, accommodating emerging social concerns. Ferreira-Buckley and Halloran's extensive treatment revives the tradition of belletristic rhetoric, improving the understanding of Blair's place in the study of eighteenth- and nineteenth-century discourse, while finding him relevant in the twenty-first.

This edition also includes an introduction by the editors along with a table of variants in the 1783 and 1785 editions of the lectures, prepared by Gary Layne Hatch and Lara Calder. This edition contains forty-seven lectures and remains faithful to the text of the 1785 London edition. The editors contextualize Hugh Blair's motivations and thinking by providing an extended account of Blair's life and era. The bibliography of works by and about Blair is an invaluable aid, surpassing previous research on Blair.

About the Author

Linda Ferreira-Buckley is an associate professor of English and rhetoric at the University of Texas at Austin, where she teaches courses in writing, the history of rhetoric and English studies, and Victorian literature. Her work has appeared in such journals as College English and Rhetoric Review.

S. Michael Halloran is a professor at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute where he teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in rhetorical theory and analysis, emphasizing connections with history and communication media. He is the coeditor (with Gregory Clark) of Oratorical Culture in Nineteenth-Century America: Essays on the Transformation of the Theory and Practice of Rhetoric.

5 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Antique University Course By Amazon Customer This is an antique classical course. It's main purpose is to train the student to write on par with Joseph Addison. It requires The Spectator by Joseph Addison. I found The Spectator in two volumes on Alibris, excellent condition, J. B. Lippincott Company 1890. You're to read a piece by Joseph Addison three times and then you attempt to write what you have just read. Thus it's important to find a copy of the The Spectator that doesn't have any editing by Joe Blow. You're expected to know Latin and it is assumed that you do so. There are interpretations of the Latin at the end of each chapter but it is disruptive. It's excellent. I highly recommend it. I also recommend the simplified Christian dialect that is the present fad and learning material from Memoria Press to start the Latin.

Forty years ago John Muir wrote to a friend; "I am hopelessly and forever a mountaineer. . . . Civilization and fever, and all the morbidness that has been hooted at me, have not dimmed my glacial eyes, and I care to live only to entice people to look at Nature's loveliness." How gloriously he fulfilled the promise of his early manhood! Fame, all unbidden, wore a path to his door, but he always remained a modest, unspoiled mountaineer. Kindred spirits, the greatest of his time, sought him out, even in his mountain cabin, and felt honored by his friendship.

Amazon.com Review Take a trip to last century's Alaska through Muir's clean, easy-going, enthusiastic prose. He wrote the way he took pictures, with insight, attention, care and genuine feeling. It's a lovely look into a beautiful land and its inhabitants the way it used to be, told in a flowing narrative that is far less rushed than contemporary travel tales.

It's a worthwhile read in its own right, don't get me wrong. But read _My First Summer in the Sierra_ or a Muir biography like Michael P. Cohen's _The Pathless Way_ before you move on to this one. Get a good dose of what the naturalist is like and learn some of his background, and then you'll be in the proper frame of mind to tackle _Travels in Alaska_. Otherwise, this book is just one glacier after another. And bless his heart, Muir wants to see them all. And climb them and explore them and sketch them and hike their entire lengths and write about them ad nauseum. He leaves his companions in his wake and puts himself squarely in the face of isolated danger over and over again. Read this book first, and you'll think he's insane. Know his roots in Wisconsin and his good work in California, and you'll be better able to appreciate what he thinks of and does in the Alaska of the late 1800s.

Yet significant aspects I remember well. Given Muir's exuberance for life and almost everything he encounters in his travels, one almost looses view of Muir the botanist and geologist. But not quite. Here we find the author contemplating the activity of glaciers and documenting the flora of southeast Alaska. Muir (who tended strongly toward vegetarianism) gleefully entertaining himself by foiling duck hunters. Baffling the locals by happily wandering out into major storms. The book is a journal of Muir's 1879, 1880, and 1890 trips (he wouldn't mind if we called them adventures) to SE Alaska's glaciers, rivers, and temperate rain forests. He died while preparing this volume for publication.I remind myself, and anyone reading this, that Muir isn't for every reader. And, as other reviewers have stated, this may not be the volume in which to introduce oneself to the one-of-a-kind John Muir. One reviewer doesn't think that Muir is entirely credible in these accounts. I won't say whether or not this is wrong, but I tend to a different view. For some of us -- and certainly for Muir -- wilderness is a medicine, a spiritual tonic, so to speak. For the individual effected in this way, physical impediments and frailties rather dissolve away when he is alone in wildness. I once heard Graham Mackintosh (author of Into a Desert Place) speak of this. In all of his travels alone in the desert, he doesn't recall having ever been sick. This may not sound credible to some, but I strongly suspect it is true.If you like Muir's writings, read this book. If you like the stuff of Best Sellers, perhaps you should look elsewhere.

Mahoney The beauty of this wonderful reprinting is how it shows John Muir as a person, how it helps us to understand the dynamic and overwhelming beauty of Alaska, and the changes in the people of Alaska. Muir's complete, tireless, and joyful commitment to nature comes through on every page. The book unintentionally provides an excellent portrait of the kind of inexhaustible devotion it takes to change the world as did Muir. The book also provides a stunning portrait of Alaska in the latter part of the 19th Century and allows one to compare the Alaska of those days with Alaska of earlier times and of today. The biggest changes are in the glaciers and in the people. The glaciers have receded dramatically as a natural part of their centuries' long retreat. It is interesting to compare what Muir saw with the experience of Vancouver almost exactly 100 years earlier (ca. 1793). Vancouver could hardly enter Glacier Bay. Muir could enter quite some distance, but the glaciers were still the dominant features. Today, the glaciers have largely receded into deep valleys. Muir encountered people in Alaska living largely as they had for centuries. They were hunters and fishermen and lived in small groups along the shore line. As Jonathan Raban points out in the intricately woven fabric of his sublime book "Passage to Juneau," the people of southeast Alaska considered the sea to be the real environment of their lives while the land was considered dangerous and unknowable. They lived along the shore and knew how to live off and with the sea year round. The lives of the Alaskan people are very different today but greatly influenced by the past. Raban often characterizes Muir's writing as overblown and florid. However, it is a portrait of a man, a maritime land and a people. To do justice to those three, the book had to be what it is - an astonishingly colorful and detailed portrait in words.

All Ducks Are Birds is Tara’s debut self-published work, sure to delight children with the colorful illustrations and the silly syllogisms common in philosophical logic. All children notice similarities and differences. To put these observations in a logical frame work is a higher order of thinking cultivated through the patterns of reasoning a child would use to deduce that similar qualities do not necessarily make all things the same. Not all birds are ducks.

By Amazon Customer All Ducks... delivers on a perfect pace with fun illustrations that will delight and surprise you and your child at the same time. I challenge readers of all ages to be honest and admit it - we can all learn something new - even from a book written mainly for kids! Thank you Tara for taking the time to plan, illustrate, and write this new book. I hope your work receives the notoriety it richly deserves. You have a great team.

Fun pictures of animals sitting, running, diving, and flying as they illustrate philosophical concepts. Some birds are ducks, but not all birds are. Ostriches don't swim and penguins don't fly, but they are all birds. My son loved it and we go over it again and again, which characteristics of birds are definitive and which are not.

It's a great read for kids that ask A LOT of questions, like mine, who interrupt every sentence with thoughts and observations. The really beautiful illustrations hold even my youngest child's attention, which is no small feat. We love this book, and highly recommend it! Can't wait for more books from this author!

In 1990, American television was in the midst of a transition, but the three major networks still dominated the American TV landscape: CBS, NBC, and ABC. CBS and NBC had a financial stronghold, and ABC was "languishing in last place." The crisis of ABC called for something new, for something that would break the mold and reposition the network. Executives like Robert Iger were willing to take a risk, even if network television was largely conservative, and the willingness to push the envelope made way for a new and edgier type of television drama. Meanwhile, producer and agent Tony Krantz had talked to David Lynch, the director of Eraserhead (1977) and Blue Velvet (1986), about going into television. This was the beginning of the show Twin Peaks (ABC, 1990-1991), a drama series which was created by David Lynch and Mark Frost, and which would come to push the boundaries of TV drama in many different ways. This book explores the last 25 years of American and Scandinavian television and argues that Twin Peaks was a game changer, pointing to a more transgressive, genre-bending, and serialized type of TV drama. Structural changes in the TV landscape were an important factor, as were the rise of new outlets, new media, and new modes of viewing. The way we watch TV has, indeed, changed during the last 25 years, but so has the way we view television, and, in this context, Twin Peaks has been a small but important factor. Based on interviews with numerous TV scholars, fans, and cast/crew members, TV Peaks investigates the recent changes in television, at a time when Twin Peaks might be coming back. *** "A wonderful account of Twin Peaks and its place in the history of television." -- Angelo Badalamenti, composer (Twin Peaks, Fire Walk with Me, Lost Highway, Mulholland Dr.) *** "For anyone interested in Twin Peaks, the history of television, and how a band of artists came to the Pacific Northwest in the fall of 1989 and changed that history, Andreas Halskov's new book, TV Peaks: Twin Peaks and Modern Television Drama, will be a must-read." -- Wendy Robie, actor (Nadine Hurley in Twin Peaks) *** "Once upon a time, television was an insular, geographically-bound medium. Then, as TV increased exponentially in quality, many of its greatest series jumped borders and became international phenomena. David Lynch and Mark Frost's Twin Peaks was one of the first to obsess the world. Now Denmark's Andreas Halskov has turned his fascination with Lynch and Twin Peaks into an extraordinary book, one that not only sets the scene for the cultural and industry context that produced Peaks but the endless intricacies of the series itself. With Peaks now likely to return to TV after a twenty five year hiatus, Halskov's sustained visit to our favorite TV town will yield dividends for old and new viewers all over the world for many years to come." -- David Lavery, editor of Full of Secrets: Critical Approaches to Twin Peaks (1995) and co-editor of Twin Peaks in the Rearview Mirror (2012) *** "Andreas Halskov has written a thoughtfully analytic look at how the seminal television series Twin Peaks contributed to the paradigm shift in televised storytelling. He presents a well-supported argument for the show's game-changing position, which led to future breakthrough shows. A must read for fans and students of the medium." -- Paul Trejo, editor (Twin Peaks and Black Sails) (Series: University of Southern Denmark Studies in Art History - Vol. 9) [Subject: Television, Media Studies, Popular Culture]

By Lasse Lorenzen If you like 'Twin Peaks' and intelligent well-written books this is a must. A thorough and in-depth look at one of the best things ever to come across Tv screens. I didn't think it was possible to still find new and interesting information about this always intriguing subject, but 'Tv Peaks' made me feel like I discovered the series anew. Great read.If another book comes out with just the unedited interviews that would be a sure buy as well.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Damn fine book! ...And hot! By Mathias Henriksen Film- and TV scholar, Andreas Halskov, has written a ‘must own book’ for all Twin Peaks-fans. Not only is “TV Peaks” very well written, it also contains more than 100 different interviews - including a bunch of the cast and crew members from David Lynch and Mark Frost’s gamechanging TV show “Twin Peaks”. From the birth of television to today where we experience a golden age of television with “Mad Men”, “Breaking Bad” and “True Detective”, “TV Peaks” investigates how the TV landscape has changed through time, arguing that “Twin Peaks” was essential for the so-called ‘quality TV’. In doing so, Halskov observes and analyzes how David Lynch’s signature style is expressed and how it relates to him as the founder of ‘auteur TV’. So, my friend, there is every reason to brew a proper pot of damn fine coffee, ‘cause you’re in for a treat!

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Not just another MC series - finally we get something real! Simply brilliant!! By Amazon Reviewer Wild Child, Book 1. I admit I don't write a lot of reviews, but when I do, it's because a book has really hit me. This was one of those books and had me hooked right from the start!! This was recommended to me and at first I thought, ok it's another MC book in a sea of MC books out there right now. I was wrong, so wrong. It's not just another MC book. This one stands out from the crowd. It's different. Being in and around an MC is NOT all rainbows and unicorns... and with this book, we finally get doses of REAL.Set amid the wilder MC days of the 70's, you'll meet Kima, aka the Wild Child, and Veiko, VP of the Bound For Hell MC. This is the beginnings of their hot and turbulent story. I loved the main characters, but we get so much more in this book with the secondary characters too. This story burns hot and bright until the very last page. It's got it all, drama, action, grit and of course, plenty of steam... your emotions will engage and leave you wanting, needing more! You won't just fall in love with Kima and Veiko, but you will with some of those supporting characters too.Nailed, Book 2. Nailed is mostly Nailz and Jo's story, along with more of Kima and Veiko and some other characters I got to meet and fall in love with in book 1!! As with book 1, I wasn't disappointed!Just like the first book in this series, this is not your average, run of the mill, MC book. Nailz and Jo's story is not all hearts and flowers, butterflies and cupcakes - it's a hot, and at times gritty, emotional ride you're not going to want to get off from - it's 'get in your face at times' real. Picking up where we left off in book 1, Wild Child, we get more Kima and Veiko along with Nailz and Jo's story. I love how Needa Warrant pulls a reader right in to not only the story, but her characters in such a strong way that even long after you finish the book, these characters are going to stay with you for a good long while. This series continues to be one of my favorite MC series out there. With quality writing and great story lines, character development and chemistry, this is definitely a MUST read and will leave you in need for more from this author. MC love, relationships, betrayal and survival, this book has it all, and then some.Blindsided, Book 3. First things first... make sure you have a big box of tissues handy when you read this one... you're going to need them... and ok maybe a personal fan to cool down in places - this book is an emotional, HOT and wild ride!!I went in to this book wanting, hoping for, and needing, so much from all of the characters I'd met and fallen for in the previous two books, and wow, I was NOT disappointed. Needa has a way of not only drawing you in, and hooking you right from the start, but she is one of those rare authors that can grab your emotions and take them on a roller coaster ride and never once let them go until the very.last.page! I can honestly say only two books have ever dragged so much emotion out of me that I've actually ugly cried... this book is one of those two.Blindsided... the perfect name for this book. There was more than one blindside going on - and I admit, as a reader I even felt a little blindsided, more than once! While at times it felt like my heart was breaking for Hunter and Elena and all they were both going through and having to deal with, the way Needa Warrant handled their story was nothing short of pure, emotional beauty. Right to the very end; and oh what an end. This was where my emotions were just going crazy, I was crying, then laughing, then feeling like my heart would break and then strangely calm and at peace, even with a smile on my face while tears were still escaping - and all within a matter of minutes as the book was coming to a close. It had me gripped so tight within it's clutches, that it took a couple of hours after finishing for the book and it's characters to finally let go of me.One of the great things about reading Needa Warrant books, you get so much more than you expect. Unlike so many books where the focus is all on just one character or couple, in these books you get a lot more than that. You get on-going story on past couples and characters, finding out more about them and what they're up to now. You get other couples mingling in with the main characters and seeing their stories evolving, like Joy and Jersey, Thorn and Tears, Dark and Dusty... and... Jack and Deidra. This series just keeps getting better and better with each book, and I can't wait to see where Needa is going to take us next! You're going to want to read this series... you need to read this series. You won't regret it.

The characters in the Bound for Hell box set are raw and gritty. There is no sugarcoating the bikers in the series. Ms. Warrant writes and tells how MC's were back in the 70's. I love how the books are so descriptive you actually feel the 70's vibe. Nobody does it better!!

Good series By Mhztointte Black I had read the first two books awhile ago on kindle unlimited, when I saw the box set I thought great price to own all three. What I didn't expect was to be in tears for most Blindside. While all three books are really good, Blindside was great. I recommend this series to anyone who loves a good biker story.

Excerpt from Paul VerlaineThe works of great artists are silent books of eternal truths. And thus it is indelibly written in the face of Balzac, as Rodin has graven it, that the beauty of the creative gesture is wild, unwilling and painful. He has shown that great creative gifts do not mean fulness and giving out of abundance. On the contrary the expression is that of one who seeks help and strives to emancipate himself. A child when afraid thrusts out his arms, and those that are falling hold out the hand to passers-by for aid; similarly, creative artists project their sorrows and joys and all their sudden pain which is greater than their own strength.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Worth an afternoon By Mark Statman This is an interesting little book, more for the intersection of Zweig's sensibilities with Verlaine than for much on Verlaine itself. If Verlaine is a poet you like (as I do), this book is worth an afternoon. If you don't know Verlaine, start elsewhere, because this won't give you enough of the poetry to understand how important Verlaine's poetry is.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. the great writer of obsession By F. McGavran Paul Verlaine is more an appreciation of the poet in the tradition of Alfred Kazin’s On Native Ground than an in depth literary biography. Zweig, the great writer of obsession, considers Verlaine’s relation with Rimbaud with almost 19th century detachment and circumspection. Several poems are reproduced in French, but the editor only provides a translation of “Art Poétique,” the only poem which Zweig analyses in any detail. Although this biography assumes the reader is familiar with Verlaine’s work in French, it is a good introduction to Verlaine for the general reader and an illustration of the theme of obsession that drove his biographer’s fiction.

Excellent and Concise Introduction By Unclepeacock Paul-Marie Verlaine (30 March 1844 - 8 January 1896) was a French poet associated with the Symbolist movement. He is considered one of the greatest representatives of the fin de siècle in international and French poetry. This book is an excellent and concise introduction to the poet. Also readThe Red Lily

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Not impressed By Jamie n boys The Diary of a grumpy bear book is a story about a bear who wakes up hungry after his long winter nap. The story starts off about him wanting to eat a rabbit, this part of the story really upset my 4 year old in 2 year old. The bear didn't end up eating the rabbit and ate some raspberries instead, but my kids just couldn't get past that part of the book. My four year old actually cried about it. The illustrations are pretty bleak, they are all black and white and look more like a coloring page with very little detail. The story really lacks content and the title says bear learns to count, but there's really no mention of the bear learning to count. The bear counts his 10 raspberries but he doesn't seem to have any trouble counting them and I'm not sure where they part about him learning to count comes in to the title. Overall I don't like the book whatsoever and neither did my children.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. It seems like neither the author or the illustrator really tried much. By Marie T. Story:This started out promising. It was a cute idea and the first few pages were amusing. Grumpy Bear wakes up hungry after a long winter nap. He’s SO grumpy because he’s hungry. Good start. This is a book about counting, so I figure he’s going to be counting the things that he eats. Instead, he counts to ten once (after threatening to eat a rabbit whole), then he goes back to bed and that’s the end of the story.Aside from that, there’s just a lot of odd grammar, incorrect capitalization and punctuation, and random emoticons (??) scattered throughout. It seems like neither the author or the illustrator really tried much.Illustrations:I honestly can’t tell if the illustrations are intentionally minimalistic or just plain lazy.Cover:Actually, the cover’s alright. Good font choices (though the subtitle could use a bit of help).

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Generic By Amazon Customer I get that teaching kids how to count is important but the story didn't really flow and the narrative was pretty generic.

Review The whole of Tarde is in this little book.

He has put into it along with a charming fancy his genialness and depth of spirit, his ideas on the influence of art and the importance of love, in an exceptional social milieu.

This agreeable day-dream is vigorously thought out. On reading it we fancy we are again seeing and hearing Tarde. In order to indulge in a repetition of the illusion, a pious friendship has desired to clothe this fascinating work in an appropriate dress.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. "Let us descend into these depths; let us make these abysses our sure retreat." By Christopher (o.d.c.) Gabriel Tarde died in 1904. This translation was published in 1905.Looking backward, I think H. G. Wells's "Introduction" serves much better as an afterword, and the brief biographical note at the end would have made a fine introduction. There we learn:"... According to Tarde the social phenomena proceed from individual inventions which in their turn are the offspring of imitation: the latter is for Tarde a capital factor in social life. Original ideas or inventions germinate ceaselessly in the social milieu, but only some, either by their superior adaptability or through the peculiar authority of their inventor, are accepted by the public as a whole. ".. which might have served as a guide to this fantasy, this chronicle of the future so far from sci fi, that it barely has fictional characters (there is one: a sort of Napoleon or Eric the Red- the "future" savior of mankind- named Miltiades).Still the notion of a remnant of humanity living beneath the earth because the sun has dimmed might even work in a modern movie.Wells says of Tarde's delicate irony that it hardly survives translation from the French. And certainly, if it is funny, it is funny in an unaccostumed way:... In spite of its beauty, harmony and incomparable charm, our society has also its malcontents. There are here and there certain recusants who declare they are soaked and saturated with the essence, so remarkably pure and so much above proof, of our excessive and compulsory society. They find our realm of beauty too static, our atmosphere of happiness too tranquil. In vain to please them we vary from time to time the intensity and colouring of our illuminations and ventilate our colonnades with a kind of refreshing breeze. They persist in condemning as monotonous our day devoid of clouds or night; our year, devoid of seasons; our towns devoid of country-life. Very curiously when the month of May comes round, this feeling of restlessness which they alone experience at ordinary times, becomes contagious and well-nigh general. And so it is the most melancholy and least busy month of the year.

3 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Just your standard neo-troglodyte utopian lit... By Christopher I wasn't going to bother with a review for this but it was so bizarre I just couldn't help it.An absurdly silly yet still entertaining post-apocalyptic tale that chronicles man's shedding of his restricting nature and the realization of his perfection through the evolution of group cooperation and herd behavior. When the sun suddenly dies, the remaining populations on earth are forced to move their societies underground. Like Noah and his ark full of animals and plants, they take with them their most valuable items for rebuilding their new world also: paintings, bronzes, violins, and books of poetry. After a few centuries of subterranean slaughter, somehow the inevitable victors emerge: secular saintly aesthetes who create a romantic neo-troglodytical artistic utopia through the prodigious use of prophylactics and capital punishment. And love.Lots and lots of charming love. And, I kid you not, he talks about "purity and essence."Stanley Kubrick, you've been found out, you thief...I also can't help noting that De Tarde also has some strange fascination with "the Chinese." Before men flee underground, during the onset of the new ice age, de Tarde describes the meadows no longer being green, the skies no longer being blue, and the Chinese no longer being yellow... And later, after the decent, he speaks not of Chinese "ancestor worship" but instead of Chinese "ancestor cannibalism."Gabriel de Tarde seems to have some renown as a criminologist and sociologist but without actually delving into his academic books, I can only imagine he was a French equivalent of Abraham Laslow - dreamers who came up with a novel idea or two which led to alternative approaches in their fields but who were at best, shallow flakes, and at the extreme, mad as March hares.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. very enjoyable By Stephen neat as a commentary. Sci-fi in a sophisticated format.
