By Dee Don't want to be a spoiler but what I took from this book is sometimes you have to appear to be the monster in order to show you are truly a hero. Enjoyed the characters and found it easy as an American reader to translate the English slang. Not using the words English slang in a derogatory manner, it's just some of the words or phrases cause me to pause. Not so, with this author.

  • A Glass Apart is a complete guide to the profiles, production, history, and revival of Irish pot still whiskey
  • Beautifully illustrated work on the history and production of Ireland's national drink―of interest to casual drinkers and connoisseurs alike

Adored by the Victorians, forged by bootleggers, forgotten by the 50s and tragically tied to Ireland's ghost town landscape of disused distilleries, “single pot still” whiskey has had an almost romantic mystique for many world whiskeyphiles as the endangered sister of the single malt and the unsung spine of Ireland's own distilling heritage.

Although once the most popularly esteemed whiskey in the record-keeping world, Ireland's history and politics resulted in the near annihilation of the national spirit and, by the 1980s, the full-bodied oils and gingery spices that first put both Ireland and whiskey itself at the top table of global drinks had been swept into the closet by marketed promises of super-smooth blending and easily palatable Irish charm. But that's all thankfully begun to change. Forget everything you were told about “light Irish” delicacy.

After decades of outspoken adoration from critics, bloggers, global drammers and a few devoted Irish distillers, single pot still has at last sprung back from the casket of bartending curiosa and taken its rightful place among the most awarded spirits in contemporary distilling. A Glass Apart: Irish Pot Still Whiskey is an introduction and a love letter to the history, craft, and diversity of Ireland's re-awoken firewater phoenix that will delight both longtime tipplers and curious novices with a longer look at Ireland's most uniquely Irish whiskey.

A Glass Apart: Irish Single Pot Still Whiskey, by Fionnán O'Connor

About the Author Fionnán O'Connor tasted his first glass of Green Spot in a pub in Galway 10 years ago and has spent an excessive number of subsequent evenings trying to uncover what exactly made that tipple so bewilderingly delicious. He has travelled extensively across the distilleries of Ireland and Scotland and has a particular affection for Islay scotch, American rye, and, of course, Irish single pot still. As an English major, he taught classes on The History and Appreciation of Whisky through UC Berkeley's Celtic Studies department while working as a brand ambassador for the Bushmills single malts and running seminars on whiskey appreciation through the legendary San Francisco cocktail bar Bourbon & Branch. He has since served as a historical consultant and whiskey lecturer for distilleries across Ireland, worked as an independent bar staff educator, and currently volunteers on the committee of the Irish Whiskey Society. He has represented Irish whiskey before the European Union as an independent critic and written articles on Irish distilling for magazines across the industry. He lives in Dublin, where he divides his time between his postgraduate studies and the welcome wonders of a certain ginger alternative.

Never be Left Out of Another Conversation About Whiskey - One-Stop Shop to All Your Questions By Kyle Raines During a recent night out to a local whiskey bar, I realized I knew very little about the drink I love so much. As I blankly skimmed the page of Irish Whiskey, my friends began discussing the intricate flavor profiles of dozens of brands they recognized. I decided then that I would spend the time to learn more about brands, ingredients and proper ways to taste/compare whiskeys. A family member recommended this book as a starting point. It turned out to be a great, all-encompassing source with all the information I needed to participate in the whiskey conversation next time I am out with my friends. It even has some fascinating history of the drink.

By TBEAR I'm a huge fan of American bourbon and Scotch malt whiskey but was shamefully ignorant about Irish whiskey. Well no longer, this fantastic book was a gift from a couple of good friends who know I love whiskey. The book starts with the basics, everything you could want to know about the whiskey from the basic flavor profiles to the production process and its history, and with details of specific whiskey brands for me to explore. The book itself is beautifully done with great photographs throughout and artfully written by O'Connor. And you'll find no whiskey snobbery here; O'Connor encourages the reader to trust your palate and "never let anyone tell you that your tastes or your preferences are wrong". This book is best enjoyed along with a healthy dram of your favorite whiskey!

Suisman A gorgeous volume to look at and browse through, a fascinating history, and a natural storyteller's gift for making the subject come alive. Fionnan O'Connor does everything short of placing that glass of single pot whiskey in your hand. You'll have to take care of that part yourself, but for the places, the people, the landscape, and the ingredients that have gone into the making of this extraordinary drink, you'll want to have this book as your magnificent guide. Reading "A Glass Apart" is like a trip to Ireland in the company of a brilliant, literate and delightful young Irishman for whom a stop in the pub is an essential part of the experience.

19 of 25 people found the following review helpful. Expect the Unexpected By Claudia This is a monster of a book, and within its pages can be found monsters of many types (not every character is a 'monster', though - there are some rather nice folk along the way - and some are nice but still monstrous). Before beginning this book, I'd suggest parking any preconceived notions about demons, wizards, dwarves, queens princesses, etc., on the doorstep, because while you will encounter all those things in this book, they aren't going to be anything like those you've encountered before. For that matter, I'd suggest forgetting any notions you've already formed regarding any place named Hell, because Fraser's Hell is going to be different from any you've likely even imagined before. When I say it's a 'monster of a book', I mean it is long - very long - what I've always called a "doorstop" book.In this case though, while it is long, it isn't too long. I'd give it a 4 1/2 star rating if I could, because it's as well written as everything else the author has produced, and it's hard to find a fault with the book at all. It's quite well written and equally well edited. The fault, if there is one, lies with me in that this isn't the type of book I normally read and so therefore doesn't fall into the category of "I love it", which is Amazon's criteria for five stars. I like it a lot, though, and I can't help but think that those who like Tolkien will love it. Personally, I had a hard time with Tolkien, although I finally did come to appreciate what everyone else was raving about when it came to his books. This book is indeed epic and an adventure, in much the same way that Tolkien's books were those same things.I found the novel to be intriguing and exciting, with a rapid pace that kept me wondering where it would lead next, with more twists and turns than could possibly be explained in any review of reasonable length. To say there's never a dull moment in this book would be quite an understatement. I think anyone who enjoys fantasy, who likes epic adventures, and who is willing and able to suspend belief for the duration of this novel would find it a fascinating read.I hope there will be a sequel. As long as this book is, I was left still wanting more. I always think that's a real hallmark of a good book, that when you've read the last page you wish there were still more pages waiting to be read.In the spirit of full disclosure, I will say that the author did give me a copy of this book, although he did not do so in exchange for a review since he neither asked nor did I promise that I'd write one. He simply thought that I'd enjoy the book, since he knew that I had enjoyed his previous works.I hope that more people will read this 'monster' of a book, and that they will enjoy it at least as much as I did. It was well worth the time spent reading it. It's not all that often that I read something that can make me laugh at one page and weep at the next, but this one managed to do that.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Very engaging, but ends abruptly By Sam "From Hell" is a highly imaginative work with characterization that's definitely well above par, in a vein that evokes Tom Robbins' best work. The only thing that held me back from giving the book 5 stars was its abrupt ending that leaves a few loose ends too many to be satisfying. If this was done intentionally with a view towards a sequel in future, let me stand corrected and amend my rating to a full 5 stars.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. One of the great fantasy tales By Amazon Customer This is a well written and marvelous story. It is a love story where love develops slowly and believably and then a horrible thing happens and we hit a cliffhanger. I can't wait for the sequel. This ranks right up there with the Lord of the Rings. I read this in two days without pausing except for three hours of sleep. This book is that good.

By Claude Avary I first read "The Land That Time Forgot" five years ago, when it was still published in three separate short volumes: "The Land That Time Forgot", "The People That Time Forgot", and "Out of Time's Abyss" (all originally published in Blue Book in 1918). I enjoyed the story immensely, but I mistakenly treated it as a trilogy, or a series of novels like Burroughs's own Barsoom series, and read them separately, interspersed with other books. With the publication of this single volume "Commemorative Edition", I finally realized that Burroughs meant for the work to be published as one novel (which it was until the 1960s), and sat down to read it as such. What a difference this makes. I now believe that "The Land That Time Forgot" is Burroughs's best work, and the definitive "lost world" tale. The three sections are semi-independent, but work as a whole in unexpected ways. In Part I, we are introduced to the Island of Caprona and the bizarre prehistoric land of Caspak hidden inside it, but only after a long submarine journey. Before the hero can solve the mystery of the strange evolutionary system of Caspak, we cut to Part II, which immediately launches us into an adventure on the other side of the Island with a new narrator. Many plot strands come to an end at the conclusion of this second section, but there are still some questions left, still some mysteries, and Part III brings it all to a great conclusion, when we finally see behind the curtains and learn the enigma of Caspak.Burroughs's writing is simple, tough, and exciting, and Caspak provides endless excitement from all corners of pre-history and fantasy: dinosaurs, sea monsters, cavemen, giant mammals, and winged humanoids! And there are airplanes and German subs as well. But what really sets this novel apart from other, similar stories, is the evolutionary concept that rules Caspak. I will say no more...the riddle of Caspak is the best of many reasons to read this wonderful novel, presented complete for the first time in nearly half a century.

The next two are "The People That Time Forgot" and "Out of Time's Abyss" (both also free). Wonderful book and beautifully written. I've seen alot of complaints about typos in the free versions but I didn't notice any. Burroughs is great at engaging the reader throughout the entire book. There was enough description to engulf you into the story but not so much that you got bored. Great and quick read.

By A Customer While Burroughs was denigrated as being a "pulp" novelist for most of his literary career, he was clearly a better writer than the vast majority of genre writers who publish today, and he was also a better story teller than most. The complaint of a reviewer that Burroughs was an obsessive racist would be hilarious if it weren't so ignorantly misguided. Similarly the complaint that Burroughs had no ear for dialogue is drenched in ignorance. The dialogue of early 20th century America is not the dialogue of late 20th century England, a fact that should not need explaining, but unfortunately explication is needed for those who who lack the most rudimentary of analytical faculties. I find Hemingway to have a tin ear for dialogue because the people I grew up with didn't speak like Hemingway characters at all, but I don't criticize Hemingway for that and suspect that he accurately recorded the cadence of his fellows. Burroughs had a good feel for the common man of the early 20th century, which is one reason his books still sell. The Land That Time Forgot is a great adventure by a very good fantasy writer. Check it out while it's still in print.

Today, it is inconceivable for a professional or even small college sports team to go without a coach designated to enhancing conditioning, strength training, and overall performance. But someone had to be first. In 1976, the Dallas Cowboys and Pro Football Hall of Fame head coach Tom Landry hired Dr. Bob Ward and told him to go to work. Part of the aura of the Dallas Cowboys was to be ahead of the curve, which made hiring Ward a natural step forward. No one could have predicted that Ward would become the key figure in revolutionizing how athletes prepare and train for generations to come. Ward believed in analytics long before Moneyball made them synonymous with sports. He saw the value in computers and technology in sports before the two became linked. Born on the Fourth of July to a home of modest means, Ward is a self-made American success story who forever changed the game of football as we know it.

Building the Perfect Star: Changing the Trajectory of Sports and the People in Them, by Bob Ward, with Mac Engel

Review His ideas and his thoughts and his programs - I really do think that Bob Ward had a lot to do with all of those winning seasons we had in Dallas. To this day, if you talk to the players he worked with, we are all crazy about him. --Roger Staubach - Dallas Cowboys quarterback, 1969-1979; Pro Football Hall of FameThere is no question he made a tremendous impact on what the NFL did in terms of strength and conditioning. He was way ahead of his time. --Dan Reeves - Dallas Cowboys assistant coach, 1970-80; NFL head coach, 1981-2003With Bob Ward, we did things before everybody else did. We were the most physically fit team in the NFL. The improvement in our guys was because of Bob Ward. --Mike Ditka - Dallas Cowboys assistant coach, 1973-74, 1975-76, 1981; NFL head coach, 1982-99

About the Author Dr. Bob Ward was born on the Fourth of July, the son of a World War I veteran. He came from modest means, even living with his three siblings in a sort of orphanage at the age of six. Ward became a self-made man and one of the most important players in the evolution of professional sports. A former small college All-American, Ward learned by doing. He trained. He played. He coached. Ward earned his Doctor of Physical Education from Indiana University and studied sports science at its infancy with the U.S. Olympic team. He took that education and went on to implement it with the Dallas Cowboys in the mid-1970s where he joined Tom Landry's coaching staff as the NFL's first full-time conditioning coach. While activities such as yoga, CrossFit, and martial arts are now common, Ward was already implementing these programs with pro athletes and would revolutionize the way athletes prepared and trained. Ward believed in analytics long before it became a part of sports vernacular. His ideas studying and analyzing athletes and movement completely changed the way individuals trained and prepared in sports. What strength and performance coaches, and the athletes themselves, do today to prepare can be traced back to Dr. Bob Ward.

By Amazon Customer My father is a humble man, so I enjoyed reading a book about his accomplishments and contributions to the NFL and sports in general because he never talked about it at home. When he was inducted in the NFL Hall of Fame for Sports and Conditioning, I had to hear about it from my mother. He just never talked about himself. I was not ignorant of everything in the book, but had no idea my father was such pioneer in his field. When reading the book, it made me think about the movie "Moneyball." This book is a moneyball-type story. Tom Landry had vision, and he gave my father room to be a visionary as well. Creative and innovative people need an environment in which to explore. I always admired Tom Landry, but after reading this book, I appreciate the man and persona even more. Good leaders are hard to find because too many want all the accolades and recognition, but not Tom Landry. This is why the Cowboys were so good under his leadership. He fostered leadership and ingenuity in others; this is what good leaders do. I will be eternally thankful that God brought my dad to work under his leadership where my father was given the chance to utilize the skills and talents God gave him.

By 58 Edsel Building the Perfect Star offers an intriguing examination of the enduring effects Dr. Bob Ward’s analytical research and innovative strength and conditioning practices had not only on the Dallas Cowboy players with whom he worked in the late 1970’s and through the 80’s, but also on the NFL and other sports as well. While this narrative initially recounts the inspiring story of how “an outlier” became “the NFL’s first full-time conditioning coach,” it develops into a fascinating account of an era in sports history that produced dramatic changes in the way athletes train, condition, and practice. The significance of these developments and the key role Bob Ward played in their initiation is underscored by the testimonies of a myriad of Cowboy greats, such as Randy White, Mike Ditka, Cliff Harris, Charlie Waters, Roger Staubach, Dan Reeves, Danny White, and Bob Breunig, who deem Ward to be one of the unsung heroes of “America’s Team.”

Chartreuse with rose pink nude girls cavorting with pale mauve satyrs By SGL Spies like fairies and other such elusive sprites, traditionally come in rings. It is a fact that a single spy, all by himself is of very little use to anybody. The purpose of espionage is to gather information - preferably useful information - against the wishes of, and in spite of the efforts of a group - usually referred to as the "Enemy". The Enemy in this case is the Soviet Union. The unique method employed is telepathic. It is a nicely written different sort of story that's a good little read. oh and that foreign tie? It's a hand painted chartreuse silk with rose pink nude girls, cavorting with pale mauve satyrs once given to a congressman destined to become president!

Excerpt from Aubrey BeardsleyIt was in the summer of 1895 that I first met Aubrey Beardsley. A publisher had asked me to form and edit a new kind of magazine, which was to appeal to the public equally in its letterpress and its illustrations: need I say that I am defining the Savoy? It was, I admit, to have been something of a rival to the Yellow Book, which had by that time ceased to mark a movement, and had come to be little more than a publisher's magazine. I forget exactly when the expulsion of Beardsley from the Yellow Book had occurred; it had been sufficiently recent, at all events, to make Beardsley singularly ready to fall in with my project when I went to him and asked him to devote himself to illustrating my quarterly. He was supposed, just then, to be dying; and as I entered the room, and saw him lying out on a couch, horribly white, I wondered if I had come too late.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. JUST GET IT OMG By Leah i'm pretty sure this is his complete works. i LOVE IT. best thing i got this christmas. it includes all kinds of stuff, like early sketches, book covers, etc. TONS of plates, large sizes, most of them take up a whole page. nothing is worse than buying a huge art book and all the pictures are tiny- NOT THE CASE HERE. full page illustrations and tons and tons of them. there are even blown up images of the tiny grotesques from the corners of pages, and images of his cool fonts and stuff. you will not be disappointed!!!!

From School Library Journal PreS-Gr 2—The New Zealand duo who created Roadwork (2008) and Demolition (2012, both Candlewick) turn their considerable talents to the building of a library. The foundation is prepared, the holes are filled with concrete, and the building rises. Clad in safety gear, men and women of different ethnic backgrounds cut the planks, raise the roof, fit the doors and windows, lay the pipes, and run the wires. "Spread the paint. Spread the paint./Bend and stretch and stoop./ Let it dry, then paint some more./Glug! GLOP! GLOOP!" Children put books on the shelves, and the final spread shows them entering their own glass-enclosed children's room and reading. Printed in large, clear letters, the rhythmic text uses basic vocabulary, strong verbs, and onomatopoeia, making it wonderful to read aloud. Artwork is done in ink, acrylic, and colored pencil on full-bleed spreads where pigmented inks and a variety of perspectives are used to great effect. A picture vocabulary at the end identifies excavators, cranes, and trucks on site as well as the safety equipment worn by workers. The simplicity of the telling and the rich details in the spreads make this a must-have for all libraries serving young children.—Mary Jean Smith, formerly at Southside Elementary School, Lebanon, TN

Sutton's rhythm and rhyming text pulsates, moving the pace along briskly. "Dig the ground. Dig the ground. / Bore down in the mud." Onomatopoeia rounds out each stanza: "Shove the piles in one by one. / Slip! SLAP! THUD!" Bold, bright illustrations convey the scope of the effort and machinery required to lift stacks of lumber or sheets of plate glass into place. ... There's always room for one more good construction book: Make a spot for this one.—Kirkus ReviewsWith plenty of onomatopoeia and action verbs, the rhyming text effectively brings the sounds of a construction site to life. Lovelock’s illustrations, cleanly rendered in pigmented inks, portray activity without being overly busy themselves. The text and art move briskly through the various building stages—from digging holes for foundation piles to laying pipes to moving in "shelves and books." Listeners will enjoy guessing what the new building will be before the last spread reveals: "The library’s here for everyone. / Ready… / STEADY… / READ!"—Horn BookAlong with speckles and spatters of paint that add a suitably rugged look, the illustrations depict on-site views of a crane, a concrete pumper, and other machines in use, capped by a final page of identifers and descriptive notes. Bread and butter for budding building boffins.—Booklist Online

We love Demolition and Road Work...but this one fell a little bit flat. I bumped it up to 3 starts because the final construction project is a library, which is a great endorsement for books and reading. I think the author is capable of better, but this book felt like it was rushed.

If you have a child interested in construction equipment and how a building is put up this book will be a hit. Also, if mom or dad works in construction this is a MUST READ! Like the idea that the new building is a library...nice touch!Book provided by publisher.

This book is by the same author and is pretty similar. My son loves it. Lots of onomatopoeia. The book was larger than I expected and was hard-back. I was suprised I got it for such a good price. Hardback books are typically pretty expensive.
